Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to identify prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness(EDS) and its associations with sleep habits, sleep problems, depression, subjective health status and obesity in community dwelling adults. Method: Data was collected from adults aged 20-59 years by random sampling. Subjects completed a questionnaire which was composed of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and questions that included items about sleep habits, sleep problems, subjective health status and sociodemographic characteristics. Height and weight were measured for calculation of body mass index. The statistical analyses was based on 3,302 adults (51.5% males and 48.5% females). Descriptive statistics, univariate logistic regression and multiple logistic regression were used. Result: The prevalence of EDS was 17.1% Multiple logistic regression showed that the associated factors of EDS were depression, obesity, dissatisfaction with sleep time, irregular sleep, and habitual snoring. Depression was the most significant associated factor(adjusted odds ratio for severe depression=2.27, 95% Confidence Interval=1.73-2.96). Conclusion: EDS is a common symptom in adults. Our finding suggested that persons with a complaint of EDS should be completely assessed for depression and obesity as well as sleep problems.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between health factor, oral health factor and revalence of depression in Korea elderly by data from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) 2012. Methods: The subjects were 10,938 elderly over 65 years old by rolling survey method and data were extracted from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) 2012. Data of 1,421 elderly were finally selected and analyzed using kstrada. The questionnaire consisted of socio-demographical characteristics of the subjects, health factors, oral health factors and depression. The oral health factors included subjective perception of oral health, alcohol consumption, exercise, smoking, and toothache. Results: Health factors influencing on the prevalence of depression were subjective health(p<0.001), stress(p<0.001), and alcohol consumption(p<0.05). Oral health factors related to the prevalence of depression were subjective oral health(p<0.05), annual dental checkup(p<0.01), and speaking problem(p<0.01). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop the oral health promotion program for the elderly and help them maintain good quality of life and mental health.
Aim: To compare prevalence of anxiety in women with abnormal cervical cytology (Pap) undergoing colposcopy to that of women attending the outpatient clinic for check-up and to examine predicting factors. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, 100 women with abnormal cervical cytology (abnormal Pap group) and 100 women who attended our outpatient clinic for check-up (control group) were recruited from June 2013 to January 2014. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was employed to determine anxiety in the participants with the score of ${\geq}11$ suggestive of clinically significant anxiety. The prevalence of anxiety and the mean HADS scores for anxiety were compared between the groups. For those with abnormal Pap, association between clinical factors and anxiety was assessed. A p-value of < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Median age was different between the groups, 44.0 years in the abnormal Pap group and 50.0 years in the control group (p=0.01). The proportion of participants who had more than one sexual partner was higher in the abnormal Pap group, 39.2% vs. 24.7% (p=0.03) and the prevalence of anxiety was significantly higher 14/100 (14.0%) vs. 3/100 (3.0%) (p < 0.01). The prevalence of depression was comparable between the groups. The mean HADS scores for anxiety and depression subscales were significantly higher in the abnormal Pap group, 6.6 vs. 4.8 (P < 0.01) and 3.9 vs. 3.1 (p=0.05), respectively. For the abnormal Pap group, no definite association between clinical factors and anxiety was demonstrated. Conclusions: The prevalence of anxiety in women with abnormal Pap awaiting colposcopy was significantly higher than that of normal controls. Special attention including thorough counselling, with use of information leaflets and psychological support, should be directed to these women.

Background: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of unrecognized depression in patients with chronic pain, but with no history of psychiatric diseases. Methods: Patients with chronic pain who did not have a history of psychiatric disease were selected for this study. The Beck Depression Index (BDI) was used to evaluate depression. Participants' socio-demographic characteristics and pain-related characteristics were also recorded. Results: The study included 94 consecutive patients with chronic pain (28 men and 66 women). Based on the BDI scores, 33/94 (35.1%) patients with chronic pain had comorbid depression. The prevalence of depression was significantly higher in our cohort than it was in the general population (P < 0.001). The standardized incidence ratio, adjusted for age and sex, was 2.77 in men and 2.60 in women. Patients who were unmarried (odds ratio [OR] = 3.714, P = 0.044), and who had subjective sleep disturbance (OR = 8.885, P < 0.001), were more likely to have moderate to severe depression. Patients with high education levels (OR = 0.244, P = 0.016), and who were economically active (OR = 0.284, P = 0.023), were less likely to have moderate to severe depression. Conclusions: Our results indicate that unrecognized depression in patients with chronic pain is common. Therefore, pain physicians should actively seek to identify these problems rather than relying on the patient to volunteer such information.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate of depression and the associated factors affecting the depression among the elderly beneficiaries of the national basic livelihood scheme. Methods: From the beneficiaries of the "visiting health care program" in a city the beneficiaries (aged 65 years or older) of the national basic livelihood scheme were selected. A total of 677 subjects were included in the study and hence for data analyses. Results: The observed prevalence rate of depression was 80.5% (mild depression was 60.2%, and severe depression was 20.3%). The factors influencing depression were indicative of subjective health status, walking exercise, hypertension, and diabetes. Conclusion: On the basis of our study results, as a strategy to reduce the prevalence rate of depression among the elderly concerned, we are of the opinion that it is very much necessary to motivate them to practice continuous and regular walking exercises in easily accessible places by mobilizing community resources such as visiting nurses and volunteers. Such efforts may not only immediately reduce the morbidity rate of depression among the low-income elderly, but also, in the long run, prevent suicides and contribute to improving their mental health status to an appreciable extent.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of antenatal depression in pregnant women and its influencing factors. Methods: With a cross-sectional survey design, a total of 396 pregnant women were recruited from a local obstetrics and gynecology clinic. Measurements included antenatal depression, perceived stress, predictors of depression during pregnancy, and demographic and obstetric characteristics. Results: Mean antenatal depression score was 8.20 (standard deviation=4.95) out of 30, falling into its normal range. However, the prevalence of antenatal depression was 35.9% when cut-point of 9/10 was used. The prevalence of antenatal depression among women in the first trimester was 31.4%. It was slightly increased to 34.9% in the second trimester but significantly increased to 40.5% in the third trimester. In multiple logistic regression analysis, experiencing prenatal anxiety (odds ratio [OR], 4.16), having no job (OR, 2.90), lower self-esteem (OR, 1.62), and higher perceived stress (OR, 1.32) were significant factors influencing antenatal depression. Conclusion: Negative feeling such as feeling anxious, lower self-esteem, and higher perceived stress during pregnancy are key factors affecting antenatal depression. Thus, antenatal nursing intervention focusing on pregnant women's feeling upon their job status is necessary to improve their antenatal psychological well-being.
It is well known that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is related to psychological distress. However, only a few studies have investigated the relationship between IBS and various dimensions of psychological distress. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of IBS and its relationship with anxiety, depression, and stress in young female college students. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-report structured questionnaire with 673 female college students. IBS was diagnosed based on the Rome III criteria. For the evaluation of psychological distress on the IBS, we investigated Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Global Assessment of Recent Stress (GARS). The prevalence of IBS was 27.9%. In the univariate analysis, the anxiety, depression, and stress scores were significantly associated with IBS (P<0.001, P=0.001, and P<0.001, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that anxiety (OR=1.07, 95% CI=1.01~1.15, P=0.032) and stress scores (OR=1.23, 95% CI=1.19~1.27, P<0.001) were independently correlated with the IBS. Among the subtypes of IBS, IBS with predominant constipation was the most common, and the anxiety, depression, and stress scores did not significantly differ between the subtypes. Our results suggest that anxiety and stress are closely related to IBS. Managing psychological distress should be considered in the treatment of IBS in young female college students.
Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between depression and number of present teeth in Korean elderly individuals. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional survey was obtained from the records of the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The subjects were 1,199 Korean elderly individuals above 65 years of age. The survey and examination data were used for the independent variables. The KNHANES included health status, nutrition survey, and oral examination. $x^2-test$ was performed to identify the characteristics of depression and number of teeth present according to the characteristics of the study subjects. Logistic regression analysis was also performed to identify the relationship between depression and number of teeth present. The statistical significance level wa sset at 0.05. Results: The prevalence of depression in the subjects was 14.8%. There were statistically significant differences in the prevalence of depression, depending on gender (p<0.001), education level (p=0.001), income (p=0.001), spouse status (p<0.001), and alcohol consumption (p=0.020). The association between depression and the number of teeth present showed statistically significant difference after adjustment (p=0.040). Conclusions: Depression in elderly individuals was closely related to the number of teeth present. Therefore, public health policies for improving oral health should be established to prevent depression.
