Grain size analysis have been made for the carbonate-detrital mixed sediments on the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of Korea. The detrital components are well-sorted with mean grain size between 2-3 phi. The detrital components are thought to be deposited in the beach environment during the glacial times when the sea level was low, representing typical 'relict' sediments. Most of the carbonate components consist of shell fragments, and are deeply weathered. They are also interpreted as the relict components that were deposited in the shallow marine environment. The carbonate fraction are coarser-grained and poorly sorted compared to the detrital component. The carbonate components are thought to have experienced the continuous environmental control of fragmentation and selective size sorting after the deposition.
The Middle to Late Cambrian Machari Formation in the Machari area, Yeongweol, Korea consists of 7 lithofacies and 3 facies associations, which are thought to be deposits of carbonate ramp (mid to outer ramp) to basin environment. These lithofacies are bedded lime mudstone, laminated lime mudstone, bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone, poloidal/bioclastic wackestone, conglomerate, mottled lime mudstone, and shale. Bedded lime mudstone facies, a few cm thick lime mudstone alternating with shale layer, is believed to have been deposited by intermittent dilute turbidity currents. Laminated lime mudstone facies, alternating lime mudstone with laminated shale, is interpreted to have been formed by fine-grained turbidity currents. Bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies was deposited by turbidity current and peloidal/bioclastic wackestone faceis was deposited by debris flow. Conglomerate facies is thought to be deposits of storm activities. Mottled lime mudstone facies is interpreted to have been formed by bioturbation. Shale facies is interpreted to have been formed by suspension settling. Seven lithofacies of the Machari Formation are divided into three facies associations. Facies association I consisted of bedded lime mudstone facies, mottled lime mudstone facies, conglomerate facies, and bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies, is interpreted to have been deposited on the mid ramp. Facies assocaition II consisted of bedded lime mudstone facies, laminated lime mudstone facies, bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies, and peloidal/bioclastic wackestone facies is thought to be deposits of the outer ramp. Facies association III consisted of laminated lime mudstone facies and shale facies is interpreted to have been formed on the basin environment.
We applied Sm-Nd isotopic system to so-called amphibolites occurring within the Ogcheon group to provide constraints on the age of the metasedimentary rocks and to characterize tectonic environment of basaltic magmatism. An internal mineral isochron age of $677{\pm}91Ma({\sigma})$ was obtained from a coarse-grained, intrusive, amphibolite near Mungyeong. Considering previous studies on the age of the Ogcheon group, we interpret that the isochron represents either early metamorphic or emplacement age. The depositional age of the metasedimentary rocks intruded by the amphibolite would be prior to late Proterozoic. The present study and Cambro-Ordovician fossil evidences of previous workers suggest that both Precambrian and Phanerozoic rocks are present in the Ogcheon group. Positive ${\varepsilon}$ Nd values(+2.4 to +3.5) of four whole rocks indicate mantle origin for the amphibolite. These isotopic data, along with published immobile trace element data of Cluzel et al.(1989), strongly suggest that parental rocks of the amphibolite formed in an intraplate environment rather than in island arc or midocean ridge. The age and tectonic environment of amphibolites in the Ogcheon belt suggest that the basaltic magmatism may be related to the late Proterozoic break-up of a presumed supercontinent, but not to the Triassic(?) collision between North and South China continents.
Dodaecheon is a small river flowing into Asan Bay which is located in the middle part of the West Coast of the Korean Penninsula. We have investigated the change of depositional environment in Dodaecheon river basin during the middle Holocene. In the course of the research, the methods such as boring, radiocarbon dating, diatom and pollen analysis were employed. The Holocene deposits of the studied area are consisted of peat and gray silt layers, and contain many plooen and diatom fossils. Based on the results of diatom and pollen analysis, we conclude that the gray silt layers were sedimented owing to the transgression in the middle Holocene, and the peat layers by the regression or stabilzation of the sea level. The shoreline in the Post Glacial Age reached to the rivemouth of Dodaecheon at ca. 7,000 years before present(y. BP) and at that time the high tide sea-level(mean high water level of spring tide) rose to ca. 3m above present mean sea-level(m.a.s.l.). Since then to ca. 6,000y. BP, the high tide sea-level arrived to ca. 5m above present mean sea level further repeating minor transgressions and regressions. The peat layers of the coastal lowland of the West Coast were formed by the sea level fluctuations from 7,000 y. BP to 3,000 y. BP, and they were distributed 2 to 6 meters higher than the mean sea level of the present day. Most of them sedimented due to the high tide level are older and higher than those of the East Coast which were formed at the swale in the low tidal range environment.
Mineral composition and grain size analyses of the sandstone from the Early Jurassic Daedong Group distributed in Mungyeong, Daecheon, Kimpo and Yeoncheon areas were made for the study of provenances and depositional environments. The most of the analyses are obtained from Mungyeong area, with some preliminarly works from Daecheon, Kimpo and Yeoncheon areas. All sandstones from the study area are characterized by high content of quartz ranging from 59.8 to 87.2 percent of total constituents. Many of quartz which has rounded dust ring seems to come from aeolian sediments. Content of feldspar is very low except Daecheon area where it ranges from 1.8 to 10.0 percent. Sandstones from Mungyeong, Kimpo and Yeoncheon areas are classified as quartz and quartzose arenite/wacke, while those from Daecheon area are classified as quartzose and lithic arenite/wacke. According to the character of the sandstones, provenance could be quartzose sandstone and quartzite. Results of grain size analysis of C-M and sorting versus skewness suggest that depositional environment seems to be fluvial, while log-probability curve pattern lacustrine environment. It is hard to derive a definite conclusion of sedimentary environment by the grain size analysis.
The overall structural framework was studied using the regional 2D seismic data, followed by the sequence stratigraphic study on the 3D seismic and well- log data in the margin of the South Con Son basin of the South China Sea. This research contributes to delineate depositional stratigraphy, depositional environment and geologic history in the 3D seismic area of highly complicated faulting. Eight Miocene sequences were indicated on the 3D seismic and well-log data, in which the structural maps of each sequence boundary and the isochron maps for the corresponding sequence were made. The seismic facies were analyzed for each sequence volume and sequence boundary surface. The 3D seismic area is characterized by coal beds deposited in the transgression environment (transgression systems tract) and channel distributions just above the sequence boundaries. During the Early Miocene, the coals and thick shales deposited in the mangrove swamp representing the lower coastal plain environment. During the Mid to Late Miocene, thick clastic sediments deposited in the coastal to shallow shelf by regional subsidence and marine transgression. The isochron maps and structural patterns indicate that the sediments were transported from west to east or from northwest to southeast.
Variation in relative contents of clay minerals was used to genetically interpret depositional environment of the Upper Jurassic Solnhofen limestone. Mineralogical examination of whole rocks and clay fractions indicates that the faule and flinz beds are composed mainly of calcite and quartz with minor amount of clay minerals such as illite, kaolinite, and smectite. Smectite shows a trend of illitization: illite layers increase with increasing of burial depth. With increasing burial depth, relative abundance of kaolinite with quartz and illite increases. This implies that the Solnhofen basin was formed during the transgression based on reduce of terrigenous influx.

$^{239+240}Pu$ concentrations in precipitation were determined for the period of May 1994 to August 1996 in oder to describe current $^{239+240}Pu$ deposition at the mid-western coat of Korea (Ansan, 37$^{\circ}$17'N, $126^{\circ}$50'E). $^{239+240}Pu$ concentration in daily precipitation varied from 0.05 to 131$\mu$Bq $kg^{-1}$ with a geometric mean of $1.26\mu$Bq $kg^{-1}$. The concentration was high in the period of Yellow Sand Storm in spring and low in wet summer monsoon. The specific $^{239+240}Pu$ concentration in daily precipitation appears to be controlled by the $^{239+240}Pu$ input to the atmosphere in spring and washout effects by precipitation in the wet summer monsoon. Wet depositional flux of $^{239+240}Pu$ varied from 4 to 123$\mu$Bq $m^{-2}d^{-1}$ with a geometric mean of $33.8\mu$Bq $m^{-2}d^{-1}$ and with a maximum in the period of Yellow Sand Storm and a minimum in the period of wet summer monsoon. $^{238}Pu$/$^{239+240}Pu$ activity raios(0.04~0.31) in precipitation for March-June period suggested that one of the major sources of Pu isotopes falling in Ansan area is the arid region of the Chinese continent.
${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{18}O$ values were determined for the Paleozoic limestones (Great Linestone Series) from the Taebaegsan region and the age-unknown limestones (Janggun Formation) from the Janggun mine, Korea. Limestones of the Great Limestone Series exhibit a range of carbon isotopic composition from -4.5 +1.3‰ with a mean ${\delta}^{13}C$ value of -1.1‰, relative to the PDB standard, and of oxygen isotpic composition from +8.8 to +23.3‰ with a mean ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of +16.0‰, relative to the SMOW, falling into the normal marine limestone range according to Keith and Weber (1964), and Degens and Epstein(1964). Carbon isotopic composition of limestones of the Great Limestone Series becomes progressively lighter from Pungchon limestone of middle Cambrian age to mid-Ordovician Maggol limestone, possibly due to change in depositional environment in the Taebaegsan basin. Variation in isotopic composition of limestones from Hwajeol to Dumugal formation offers the possibility or deposition in shallow sea environment, in which fresh waters were added in several stages. Janggun limestone of unknown age may be corelated with the Paleozoic limestones of Great Limestone Series as infered from the istopic composition ranging from -2.8 to + 0.7‰ of ${\delta}^{13}C$ and +13.4 to +22.4‰ of ${\delta}^{18}O$.
Investigating the physical and chemical properties of riverine wetlands is necessary to understand their distribution characteristics and depositional environment. This study investigated the physical (particle size, color, and type) and chemical properties (organic, inorganic, and moisture contents) of sediments in Samrak wetland, located in the Nakdong River estuary area in Busan, South Korea. The particle size analysis indicated that the hydraulic conductivity values for the coarse grain and the mixture of coarse and fine grains ranged from 2.03 to 3.49×10-1 cm s-1 and 7.18×10-3 to 1.24×10-7 cm s-1, respectively. In-situ water quality and laboratory-based chemical analyses and radon-222 measurement were performed on groundwater and surface water in the wetland and water from the nearby Nakdong River. The physical and chemical properties of Samrak wetland was characterized by the sediments in the vertical and lateral direction. The concentrations of chemical components in the wetland groundwater were distinctly higher than those in the Nakdong River water though the wetland groundwater and Nakdong River water equally belonged to the Ca-HCO3 type.
