Coastal Typhoon Deposit in the Hampyung Bay, Southwest Coast of Korea

  • The oyster shell bed (more than 47 cm thick) atop the Gaipri Point (granite coastal bluff) in the Hampyung Bay, southwest coast of Korea which is a coastal area of southeastern margin of the Yellow Sea basin has been interpreted as unique typhoon deposit formed at about 3610 yr BP or later. The unconformable boundary between the oyster shell bed by typhoon and the granitic soil horizon of the Gaipri Point is 820 cm high above the mean high-tide water level (MHWL). The $^{14}C$ age of the oyster shells is 3610${\pm}$70 yr BP.

A Laboratory Study on Erosional Properties of the Deposit Bed of Saemankeum Sediments (새만금 점착성 퇴적물의 퇴적저면 침식특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the erosional properties of deposit bed for the natural sediments are quantitatively estimated domestically for the first time using annular flume. Four erosion tests for Saemankeum sediments have been carried out on different consolidation time. Experimental results of erosional tests show that shear strength ${\tau}_s$ increases with the increases of consolidation time and bed depth. The erosion rate increases logarithmically with the increases of exceed shear strength ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s$. But, the erosion rate decreases rapidly with the decreases of exceed shear strength under the $0.2N/m^2$. Experimental results of this study are found to be remarkably different in quantity as compared with those for results of previous study.

A Laboratory Study on Erosional Properties of the Deposit Bed of Kaolinite Sediments (고령토 퇴적저면의 침식특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the erosional parameters for deposit beds were quantitatively estimated domestically for the first time through the erosion tests using an annular flume. Four erosion tests were carried out for the deposit beds with different consolidation structures, which were obtained by consolidating the kaolinite slurries for a given time durations. Results of erosion tests showed that the bed shear strength ${\tau}_s$ increased with the consolidation time and bed depth. The erosion rate ${\epsilon}$ was also shown to be related well with the excess shear stress ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s$ which was given by the difference between flow shear stress ${\tau}_b$ and bed shear strength ${\tau}_s$. While the logarithm of the erosion rate was linearly related with the excess shear stress as ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s{\geq}0.1N/m^2$, however, the erosion rate decreased rapidly with it when ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s{\leq}0.1N/m^2$. These erosion test results were also shown to be good enough to verify by comparing with the test results from previous studies and a new equation was suggested to describe the erosion rate more well in the region of ${\tau}_b-{\tau}_s{\leq}0.1N/m^2$.

  • There are lots of the narrow pass on alluvial channel of Korea. Most of research about this narrow pass of channel were focused on incremental effect of water level at backwater segment. In the meantime this research showed that it is important to valuate the river-bed variation at backward and forward around narrow pass. The sediment deposit at not only the backward of narrow pass but also the forward affected incremental effect of water level. The sediment deposit at the forward of narrow pass headed by sediment that passed through the narrow passed or scoured right around it.

  • Recent development of industry and urbanization in the interior of mountainous area increases the possibility of occurence of natural disaster, such as flood, landslide and deblis-flow. Erosion control facilities, which were the most significant activity to riverbed fixiation, were constructed at the downstream of the experimental basin. In the mountain torrents, the complex bed load transport has occurred by the drift of running water, and resulting in a formation of terrace deposits. Especially, channel migration caused by scouring and deposition frequently occurs at the wide areas of the river bed. Consequently, the unsymmetrical river bed charactristics indicate the degree of the channel migration.

  • Placer gold deposits is mainly distributed in the Takaoi area. The alluvium is unconsolidated or semiconsolidated deposit consisting of gravel, sand, and soil beds in ascending order. They unconformably overlies the Carboniferous-Permian schist and Cretaceous granodiorite substratum. Based on detailed facies analysis, the alluvium can be interpreted as a typical fluvial deposits containing gravel and sand beds of channel-fill unit and soil deposit of floodplain. Gold grains are included mainly in the gravel bed and vein quartz is only contained gold among all kinds of gravels. These features indicates that the source rock of the gold grain is vein quartz and gold grains are separated from vein quartz during transport and abrasion. The reserves of gold in this area reach to at least 792 kg.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the downstream influences due to the dam discharge by using 2-dimensional model, SMS(Surface water Modeling System). RMA-2 and SED-2D in SMS were applied to Yongdam multipurpose dam watershed located in Gum river basin. Through the simulation, erosion and deposit quantitative analysis of sinuous channels and scour pattern analysis of bridges have been done. A differences erosion depths between deposit are simulated as $-102.4 mm{\sim}54.2 mm$ at No.176(1.4 km) and $-104.1 mm{\sim}28.9 mm$ at No.146(7.4 km), sinuous channel. The river bed at Kamdong bridge in straight channal is simulated as uniform erosion. However, the river bed at Dumdul bridge in sinuous channal has been shown as different erosion depths at each sides. Consequently, the parts that could not be simulated on the existing 1-dimensional model, can be improved results by using a 2-dimensional model, about weakness points for hydraulic modeling such as extreme bend, tributary confluence.

  • Channel-bed of erosion and sedimentation, where eroded bed and bank materials re-deposit through the action of flow, is a natural phenomenon in alluvial systems. Analysis using a numerical model is important to understand the sediment transport mechanism associated with erosion and sedimentation near weirs and other hydraulic structures within riverine systems. The local riverbed change near a hydraulic structure (Changnyong-Haman multi-function weir in Nakdong river) has been analyzed in order to examine the effect of hydraulic structure on local bed change. A 2D numerical model (CCHE-2D) has been implemented to simulate the sedimentation and erosion over a reach (10 km) including the weir. For the calibration and verification of the model, the rainfall data from a real event (Typoon 'Maemi' in 2003) has been used for flow and stage simulation. And the simulated results show a good agreement with the observed data for whole domain. From the result, it was found that the installation and operation of weir can aggravate the local bed change caused from the flow field change and resulting redistribution of sediment.

A Study on the Bed Change in Reservoirs (저수지 하상변동에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to predict the bed elevation change of river and reservoir by compound water model, two-dimensional jet model and one-dimensional density current model, assuming that the river has a single channel and the reservoir has multiple channels. In numerical model, discharge and water level changes is obtained by flow continuity equation and flow momentum equation through double-sweep method, and then applied to sediment continuity equation to predict the scour and deposit of channel bed. The span ranged from the Bosung Dam to Mundueok Bridge at the upstream of Juam Dam, which is approximately 31km long (13km of river and 18km of reservoir), is taken as survey area.
