The Relationship Between Knowledge of Patient Safety, Nursing Professionalism and Patient Safety Management Activities in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 환자안전에 대한 지식, 간호전문직관과 환자안전관리활동의 관련성)

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between knowledge of patient safety, nursing professionalism and patient safety management activities of nursing students with clinical practical experience. Methods: Self-administered questionnaires survey on knowledge of patient safety, nursing professionalism, and patient safety management activities were conducted for the $3^{rd}-year$ and $3^{th}-year$ nursing students. 139 questionnaires were distributed, of which, 131 were used for data analysis. Results: The scores of nursing students' knowledge of patient safety, nursing professionalism and patient safety management activities were $6.76{\pm}1.26$, $65.11{\pm}7.97$ and $67.99{\pm}7.26$, respectively. Knowledge of patient safety differed significantly according to the grade. Nursing professionalism had a difference with major satisfaction, clinical practical satisfaction, and experience of patient safety accident. Patient safety management activities were positively correlated (p<.01) with knowledge of patient safety and nursing professionalism. Patient safety management activities increased significantly with increase in the scores of knowledge of patient safety and nursing professionals. The factors that were related to patient safety management activities of nursing students were knowledge of patient safety and nursing professionalism. Knowledge of patient safety and nursing professionalism were selected as significant variables for explaining the patient safety management activities of nursing students, of which the coefficient of determination was 9.8%. Conclusion: To promote patient safety management activities of nursing students, training programs for patient safety management activities are required. Also, there is the need to increase the knowledge of patient safety and nursing professionalism of nursing students using various educational method.

  • These days our nation is standing on tiptoe of welfare nation. so hospital in authority have done reformation to provide quality medical services. This effective nursing work to provide quality nursing by keeping pace with the reformation of management of hospital for quality medical function might be well said to be depending on the degree of function of nursing management of nursing department. This essay has been aimed to prepare the data to build the position of nursing organization which can elevate the quality of nursing by clarifying the difference of the degree of the function of nursing management according to the position of nursing department in hospital organization. 135 nurses of 1 general hospital in Seoul which has independent nursing organization of the hospitals of over 600 beds and 155 nurses of 1 general hospital in Seoul which has the nursing organization under the management of medical department have been the objects of this study. The tool of Yoon. Young Ae(1988) has been used by having it amended and complemented and the degree of reliability of the tool was resulted in Cronbach's Alpha .9155. The collected data have been analysed by SPSS program as mean. frequency, chi-square. t-test. F-test(ANOVA) and the results are as the follows; 1. Compared result of general characteristics of the two groups by $x^2$-test showed statistically significant difference between religion ($x^2$=10.375, p=.015) and educational background($x^2$=51.222. p=.000) 2. The t-test aimed to compare the degree of function of nursing management according to the position of nursing department is as the below: Compared result of the degree of the function of nursing management according to the areas has shown higher point in independent type(M=3.22) than in the type under the management of medical department(M=2.85) in the personnel and administrative activities of nursing department. the standard and regulation of nursing duty also showed higher point in independent than in the type under the management of medical department (M=3.37) and the education of nursing showed higher point in independent type(M=3.53) than in the type under the management of medical department(M=3.19) and the evaluation of nursing quality has shown higher point in independent type(M=3.33) than in the type under the management of medical department(M=3.05), The area which showed the highest difference of the degree of the function of nursing management between the two organizations was in the activities of personnel and administration management of nursing department (independent type M=3.22. the type under the management of medical department(M=2.85). The degree of function of general nursing management showed higher in independent type nursing organization than in the type under the management of medical department by 3.41 in independent type and 3.11 in the type under the management of medical department. The items which showed the lowest degree of function of nursing management of both organizations have been suitable nursing man power and distribution and the reflection of the opinion of nursing department. In conclusion. the degree of function of nursing management to be able to provide quality nursing for the hospital goal of quality medical works showed visibly higher in independent nursing organization than in the nursing organization under the management of medical department. Therefore it is desirable for the hospital to operate the nursing department in hospital organization by independent type rather than the type under the management of medical department and the chief of nursing department of the nursing organization of the type under the management of medical department should make effort to reform its structure to be able to establish the position of performing independent nursing management. And also the chief of the nursing organization of independent type should endeavor to build substantial independent type organization more than ever under the viewpoint of securing suitable nursing man power and the low degree of management in the reflection of the opinion of nursing department.

Cultural Capacity and Intercultural Communication of University Students in Nursing (간호대학생의 문화적 역량과 문화 간 의사소통 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the cultural capacity of college nursing students and the relationship of intercultural communication. Methods: The participants were 200 students in colleges of nursing from 6 universities in C city, who understood the purpose of the study and agreed to participate. Collected data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 22.0. Results: Cultural sensitivities in this study (r=.372, p<.001), cultural knowledge (r=.399, p=.001), cultural awareness (r=.547, p<.001), and cultural technology (r=.550, p<.001) each showed a statistically significant correlation with intercultural communication skills. Conclusion: The results of this study show that reinforcement of the cultural and intercultural communication ability of college nursing students, in-depth exploration of the cultural area and religious inspection, cultural and professional backgrounds, assessment and consideration of cultural characteristics, nursing diagnosis, and health appropriate to the cultural background. It is suggested that education such as service provision should be conducted systematically.

A Study on Performance Measurement Indicators of Nursing Department in a Hospital (병원 간호조직 성과관리지표 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution score of nursing organizational level for Performance Management Indicators (PMIs) in the nursing department in a hospital. Methods: The process consisted of three stages. Stage I: The strategies based on 4 perspectives of Balanced Scorecard (BSC) were identified by BSC committee in the hospital nursing department. Stage II : PMIs according to the strategies were developed. Stage III : The contribution score according to nursing organizational level (nursing department, nursing unit, nurse) for PMIs were surveyed by questionnaire. Data was analyzed using descriptive statics and ANOVA test. Results: Eight strategies were defined according to 4 perspectives of BSC. Eighteen PMIs were determined according to the strategies. The nurse considered the contribution of nursing department most highly on the 13 among 18 PMIs. Conclusion: This study provided basic data for further study to identify the subject of responsibility on the strategic management of performance.

Trend Analysis of Research in the Korean Journal of Adult Nursing for 5 Years (2010~2014): Focused on Usage of Nursing Theories (성인간호학회지(2010~2014)에 게재된 논문의 연구동향 분석: 간호이론 활용을 중심으로)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the trend of nursing theories by Korean Journal of Adult Nursing (KJAN) for the last five years and to provide future directions for improvement. Methods: The study analyzed data collected from 323 research papers published in KJAN between 2010~2014. Descriptive analysis was conducted with a focus on frequency and percentage for the quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis was performed for the analysis of nursing theories. Results: As for research topics, the analysis results based on the meta-paradigm of nursing show that the most frequent factors of analysis were adult patients in the area of human beings, hospitals in the area of environment, depression, anxiety, and suicide in the area of health, and all the influential factors in the area of nursing. The analysis results of uses of nursing theories in the papers reveal that only 4(1.2%) out of total 323 papers used the nursing theories, which indicates that the linkage and utilization of nursing theories in the published papers for the last five years were poor. Conclusion: We needs to make efforts at the society level to activate nursing theory utilization in research which is beloved to connect nursing practice, education, and research.

  • Chunchoen Community Home Nursing Program (CCHNP) sponsored by Chuncheon City and Gangwondo Nurses Association was the first trial of community based home health nursing in Korea. The services have started since 1996. The purpose of the study was the evaluation CCHNP to establish standard of community based nursing program in Korea. The methods of evaluation were quantitative and Qualitative approaches. Evaluation for organization and management were conducted by the American Community Health Accreditation Program Standards With the result. several recommendations were suggested : It is necessary to expand the program to all the Gangwondo cities. And the liaison system is necessary between medical care facilities and community nursing home agency to establish the continuity of health care delivery system in home nursing program. Also it is necessary to set up the supporting system between community home nursing care agency and hospital home nursing department. Finally, the National Health Insurance should cover the cost of community home nursing care.

Validation of Korean Nomenclature of NOC;Focused on 260 Outcomes (간호결과분류체계(Nursing Outcomes Classifications)의 한글 명명화에 대한 타당성 연구;260개 간호결과명을 중심으로)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and test the validity of the standardized Korean nomenclature of 260 Nursing Outcomes Classification(NOC) developed by Johnson and Mass at University of Iowa in 2000. Method: The four phases of the study were: (1) translation of the NOC into Korean by the Research Team, (2) nine nursing professors and nurses with various clinical backgrounds reviewed each nomenclature taking into consideration of definitions and outcome indicators. The modified Delphi method was used to determine the most appropriate nomenclature for each term, (3) 307 Clinical expert nurses more than three years field experiences were given a questionnaire to rate each Korean nomenclature using a 5 point Likert scale ranging from very inappropriate to very appropriate, and (4) final accordance of Korean Nomenclature. Result: The team determined that 260 Korean nomenclature was appropriately named. because the mean validity score of 260 outcomes was 3.90 and each of 260 Korean nomenclature had a score more than 3.00. Conclusion: Korean nomenclature of NOC can be used as a standardized language of nursing result in a computerized nursing information system.

Analysis of Anesthesia and Recovery Room Nurses's Activities (일 대학 병원 마취${\cdot}$회복실 간호사의 간호활동 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to specify roles of nurses from the anesthesia and recovery room by analyzing nursing activities as well as anesthesia nursing during surgery. Method: The objects were 12 RNs working in the recovery room of a university hospital located in Incheon. Self-report was performed by measuring stop-watch for five days from May 17th to May 21st in 2004. Research method was designed to record the time and frequency of the nursing activity from anesthesia and recovery room based on nurses' statement and other references for five days. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and t-test via SPSS Win 10.0 program. Result: Nursing activities in anesthesia recovery room were classified into two different characteristics such as direct and indirect nursing activity. The activities consisted of 11 direct nursing areas and 39 nursing activities in anesthesia preparation room. The indirect nursing was classified into 8 nursing areas and 32 nursing activities. The direct nursing was classified into 12 nursing areas and 55 nursing activity. Also, the indirect nursing was classified into 7 nursing areas and 21 nursing activities in recovery room. In terms of prevalence of nursing activities in the anesthesia preparation room, observation and cooperation of anesthesia was the most prevalent activity, drug and eqipment management the second prevalent, and drug administration the third. On the other hand, in the recovery room, the most prevalent activity was vital sign checking and observation, the second most prevalent activity informative activity, and the third body temperature control. Nursing activity time was recorded according to the nursing characteristics. In the anesthesia preparation room, the direct nursing spent for 8092.20 minutes was larger than the indirect nursing spent for 7198.50 minutes. Also, in the recovery room, the direct nursing spent for 2361.16 minutes was larger than the indirect nursing spent for 1134.13 minutes. 4. Nursing activity time was compared to duty shifts. In the anesthesia preparation room, the direct nursing was more prevalent on day shift and the indirect nursing was prevalent on evening shift. However, in the recovery room, both direct and indirect nursing activities were prevalent on day shift. Conclusion: The role of anesthesia and recovery room nurses was analysed according to the time, frequency, and its characteristics.

An Effect of the Application of Educational Electronic Nursing Record System for Nursing Students (간호학생의 교육용 전자간호기록 시스템 적용 효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of educational Electronic Nursing Record System in terms of nursing process preparation ability and satisfaction about the system itself. Methods: A one group pre-post experimental study design was utilized in this study. The effectiveness of the system was examined through quality of nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes and electronic nursing record system satisfaction inventory. Junior and senior nursing students were the potential study respondents and evaluation instruments were applied only for the one who agreed to participated in the study. Education about nursing process and electronic nursing record system was carried out as part of regular classes and students were guided to prepare nursing process upon the scenarios developed earlier. Results: 29 juniors and 33 seniors prepare nursing process documentation related to each scenario and both groups showed significant improvement upon nursing process documentation (t=7.53, p<.001, t=3.23, p=.003, respectively) compared to paper based nursing process preparation. Satisfaction about system itself was 2.78(0.81). Conclusion: Educational electronic nursing record system seems to be effective to train nursing students for nursing process preparation ability. Effort to enhance its utility are called in the area of education and system itself.

Development and Evaluation of an Evidence-Based Nursing Protocol for Fever Management in Adult Patients (성인 발열 환자를 위한 근거기반 간호 지침 개발 및 평가)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to develop, to implement and evaluate a fever management nursing protocol for adult patients. Methods: This study was conducted through seven steps following both the guideline development procedures of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network and the Model of the Asan Medical Center Evidence-Based Practice, as follows: 1) identifying the clinical needs and composition of the protocol development group; 2) identifying and evaluating the evidence; 3) assessing the level of evidence and grading recommendations; 4) forming a protocol; 5) evaluating the protocol using an expert group validity test and identifying barriers to its implementation; 6) protocol development; and 7) evaluation of practical improvement measures following implementation of the protocol. Results: The evidence-based protocol for fever management in adult patients was completed and includes five domains and 15 items. The protocol had good content validity (CVI=.90) and nursing practice could be improved after implementation of the protocol. Conclusion: This nursing protocol can be used as a guide for nursing in febrile adult patients. We recommend that further guidelines be updated in an interdisciplinary manner in order to foster local adaptation of the best clinical practices.
