Dietary behavior of the elerly over 65 and local products in Yeongi Chungnam were studied during busy farming season and meal menu was developed based upon the information surveyed. In allowance, 45% of them lived with less then one hundred thousand won but 95% had their own residence(P<0.001). The dental health conditions of the male and female elderly did not show significant differences but had tendencies of bad conditions with 68% and 80%, respectively. Percentage of using denture at least one side was only 48%(P<0.05). Meal preparation was mostly done by 75% of the female elderly and only 64% of the elderly in the area took meals regularly. Recommended intakes(RIs) of calorie, protein, dietary fiber, calcium for the elderly were significantly very low(P<0.001), but those of sodium were high(P<0.05). Meal menu was developed for the meal service introduction in the pavilion of the elderly with considerations of the food habits, nutritional status, and local products studied.
Finite element models were constructed to analyze the mechanical behavior of a three unit fixed partial denture (FPD) with a 2nd premolar and 2nd molar abutment either employing a rigid and nonrigid connector. Gap elements were used to model the clearance space of the nonrigid connector. 1. High stress was generated in the FPD and supporting abutment around the rigid connector. 2. The pattern of stress and deflection is very similar between vertically and 20 degree mesially tilted nonrigid connector at the distal aspect of premolar abutment. 3. FPD with an inverted nonrigid connectors exhibited the worst undesirable mechanical stress states and deformations. 4. Nonrigid connector of normal orientation transmit the load to the abutment tooth, but inverted connector doesn't transmit the force.
The purpose of this study was to use the result as basic resources for oral health project for elderly people. we found the needs of oral health project and perceived oral health status, oral health knowledge, attitude, behavior of elderly people. we conducted a study on 194 elderly more than 60 years living in several social welfare facility, asylum, or care centers in Jeolla province. Through self-filled questionnaires and direct interviews from December 2008 to January 2009. The obtained result were as follows. 1. In perceived oral health status, 57.7% of respondents said they have hypersensitivity and 42.8% of respondents needed denture. 2. In oral health promoting behavior, 67.0% of respondents said they didn't have any tooth brushing and 45.9% of respondents said they haven't visited to dentist for the last year. 3. In oral health knowledge, 94.8% of respondents gave correct answers on dental caries prevention but only 7.2% of respondents gave correct answers on dental caries cause. 4. In oral health attitude, 40.2% of respondents said they don't recognize the importance of oral hygiene devices. 46.9% of respondents the unnecessary to see a dentist even though they don't have toothache. 5. Needs of oral health project, 53.6% of respondents said they wanted to have a dentist come over their house. Therefore, oral health projects should have vehicles of dental treatment equipment. It is necessary to visit places where elderly people live and treat them in person. Also, it is vital to continue educate people about oral health knowledge in a systematic way to change their attitude toward oral health. Moreover, it is necessary to implement oral health promotion behavior more proactively.
A two dimensional finite element model was constructed to analyze the mechanical behavior of a five unit fred partial denture(FPD) with a 2nd premolar pier abutement either employing a rigid or nonrigid connector. Gap elements were used to model the clearance space of the nonrigid connector. All FPDs with rigid or nonrigid connectors reduced the magnitude of stress in the periodontium as compared to the control, with both normal or reduced bone support. An FPD with rigid connectors induced the smallst stresses in the periodontium. A FPD with a nonrigid connector on the mesial of the molar abutment exhibited the most undesirable mechanical stress states and deformations.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the oral health awareness and oral health care provided by workers in the long-term elderly care facilities. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 213 workers in long-term elderly care facilities. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, oral health awareness, oral health behavior, oral health knowledge, oral health care professionals, oral health care, oral health care improvement, and denture care. Except the incomplete answers, 200 data were analyzed by the statistical software of SPSS WIN 18.0. Results: Highly educated people tended to have higher oral health awareness. The workers in the facility maintained the oral health care but they suggested that dental professionals are needed. Conclusions: It is necessary to suggest the oral health care management by dental professionals.
The issue of health and nutritional wellbeing becomes one of the utmost concerns for the welfare of the elderly in a society of increased aging populations. This study was conducted to assess nutritional state and to identify possible dietary factors that might influence health and nutritional state of the free living elderly women. Two hundred sixty two elderly women, aged 60-90 who are actively participating in a continuing education program for the elderly in Seoul area, were interviewed using a dietary habit questionnaire and a 24-hour recall. Anthropometric measurements such as heights, weights, body mass index, and tricep skinfolds and dental status were significantly different between the two age groups, <75 and ${\geq}$ 75 years of age. Sixty eight percent of the subjects were using nutritional supplements regularly, in the descending order of vitamin-mineral supplements(40%), botanicals(27.6%), tonic drinks(16%), and health foods(13.2%). For hot beverages, our study subjects drank coffee (33.6%) and green tea (17.9%) frequently, followed by doongulae, job's tears, citron and kyulmyung tea. With regard to micronutrients, vitamin C intake was found to be lower in the group aged over 75 compared to that below 75 (p<0.05). Calcium intake was significantly higher among the elderly with good dental status followed by the groups with gingivitis, denture, and missed teeth with poor chewing abilities (p<0.05). The amount of personal spending money was found to be a significant contributing factor (p<0.05) to the energy and nutrient intake in an individual. The results of the present study can be applied to the identification of the possible factors that might intervene the aging process, to the planning of the nutrition education program, and to the development of health food products for the promotion of health and nutrition of the elderly women.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of oral care behavior, oral health care self-efficacy, and social support on the subjective oral health level of the elderly. The data survey was conducted from September 17, 2019 to November 22, 2019 for the elderly living in Daejeon Metropolitan City and parts of Chungcheongnam-do, and the collected data were analyzed by 𝑥2-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and logistic regression analysis. As a result of the survey, subjective oral health level increased by 3.242 times when dentures were not used and 2.339 times when the number of brushings per day was 3 or more times. In addition, as the oral health care self-efficacy and social support increased 1.755 times and 1.192 times, respectively, the subjective oral health level also increased. Based on the above results, in order to improve the subjective oral health level of the elderly, opportunities for oral health education such as denture care methods and toothbrushing lessons should be expanded. In addition, there is a need to prepare policies to reinforce oral health care self-efficacy and social support.
This study aims to analyze the oral health status of the elderly. Study subjects were 9,340 elderly aged over 65 who took the health examination (the first) for the local insured when the National Health Insurance Corporation carried out its survey from January to December, 2002. The subjects took an oral examination and filled in the questionnaire. Major results from the analysis are as follows: 1. Analysis of Oral Health Behavior For oral health behavior, 38.2% of total subjects had visited a dental hospital (or clinic) in the last one year in the order of the elderly of big cities (48.3%), the elderly of medium cities (43.9%), and the elderly of rural areas (29.0%)(P<0.001). Elderly men had a higher rate than elderly women, and the younger age had a higher rate(P<0.01). For experience of oral prophylaxis, 12.3% of the total elderly had experienced it in the order of the elderly of big cities (18.8%), the elderly of medium cities (16.0%), and the elderly of rural areas (6.4%) (P<0.001). For elderly men, the younger age had a higher rate of oral prophylaxis. The number of toothbrushing in order was twice(47.5%), once (26.7%), three times (25.0%), and none (0.7%). The younger age brushed their teeth more often (P<0.001). 2. Analysis of Oral Health Status The rate of caries was 10.6% of the elderly surveyed. By area, the elderly of rural areas had a higher rate of caries than the elderly of cities (p<0.001) and elderly men were higher than elderly women (p<0.001). By age, many elderly aged over 80 had more than two caries. For missing teeth, the elderly of rural areas had a higher rate than the elderly of cities (p<0.001) and the older age had a higher rate(p<0.001). The rate of periodontal disease was 43.2% of the total elderly. By area, the elderly of big cities (46.2%) had a higher rate of periodontal disease than the elderly of medium cities (39.4%) and rural areas (43.6%)(p<0.001), and elderly men (46.4%) were higher than elderly women (40.2%)(p<0.001). By age, the lower age had a higher rate of peridontal disease (p<0.001). Dental abrasion was observed in 16.9% of the total elderly. The elderly of cities (21.0%) had a higher rate than the elderly of rural areas (12.0%)(p<0.001) and elderly men (21.3%) were higher than elderly women (12.8%)(p<0.001). Also the lower age had more dental abrasion symptoms (p<0.001). For needing a denture, the rate among the elderly was 48.5% and was higher for the elderly of rural areas(20.9%), than the elderly of big cities(7.0%) and medium cities (10.5%)(p<0.001). For the rate of denture wearing, the elderly of rural areas(41.8%) were higher than the elderly of big cities (27.7%) and medium cities (28.2% )(p<0.001). For the relation of drinking and smoking to oral health, the elderly who had a higher frequency of drinking, had a higher rate of caries (p<0.001)periodontal disease(p<0.001) and missing teeth(p<0.001) Smokers had a higher rate of caries (p<0.001), periodontal disease (p<0.05), and missing teeth (p<0.001) than nonsmokers.
The aim of this study was to assess the oral health knowledge, attitude and behavior among geriatric care workers in long-term care facilities. A self-administered questionnaire was obtained from 212 geriatric care workers attending a professional education program of 2014 dementia pilot project. The questionnaire consisted of 4 parts of the training experience (2 items), knowledge (16 items), attitude (13 items), and behavior (4 items) on oral health care. Collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA using SPSS Statistics ver. 20.0. The percentage of educational experience on oral care was 27.9% and most respondents answered that they have received the education about denture cleaning (98.3%) and brushing method (91.4%). The average knowledge score was $10.88{\pm}1.70$, and respondents showed high-level agreement in 8 of the 10 items in attitude questions. They revealed difficulties in providing oral care to the elderly people because of their lack of knowledge. The deficiencies of knowledge about oral care would have a decisive effect on not only oral and general health, but also quality of life of the elderly people. Therefore, it is required to develop professional oral care training programs for geriatric care workers and support systems should be legalized.
PURPOSE. To assess function by identifying changes in swallowing and masticatory performance in maxillary obturator prosthesis wearers. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty subjects were recruited for the study, of which 20 were obturator wearers, 20 were completely dentulous and 20 had removable partial/complete dentures with similar Eichner's Index. Swallowing ability was evaluated with and without obturator using the "Water Drinking Test"; Masticatory performance was evaluated with the Sieve test; and maximum occlusal force was recorded with the help of a digital bite sensor. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science version 15.0 with a confidence level at 95%. RESULTS. Profile, behavior of drinking and time taken to drink were significantly improved (P<.001) in subjects after wearing obturator. Masticatory performance was not significantly different (P=.252) in obturator wearer when compared with dentulous or removable partial/complete denture wearer, but significantly (P<.001) high inter group difference in maximum occlusal force existed. Correlation between masticatory performance and maximum occlusal force was not significant (P=.124). CONCLUSION. Swallowing ability was significantly improved after wearing obturator but masticatory performance was not significantly different from those having similar occlusal support zone in their dentition.
