Purpose: This study is to provide basic data of the dental acrylic denture base resin in the mechanical property difference investigation according to the monomer composition weight ratio of the acrylic denture base resin. Methods: The monomer composition of the acrylic denture base resin and weight ratio makes the different specimen. It measured the mechanical property with the specimens through Hardness Test, Tensile Test, Flexural Test, Flexural Modulus, FT-IR Test. Results: The control group Vertex was 18.4 Hv and the experimental group MED was 14.46~19.07Hv in the hardness test. Vertex was 364N, MED-3 was lowest in the tensile strength test and the Head of a family cursor declination was big. The result declination of the experimental specimens showed. Vertex and MED-2 was the highestest in the flexural test and after coming MED-6, MED-5, MED-1, MED-3, MED-4. Vertex and MED-2, as to a spectrum for $500{\sim}1800cm^{-1}$ peak can show the excellent degree of polymerization in the FT-IR Test. Conclusion: The ideal weight ratio of the monomer of the acrylic denture base resin of which the mechanical property is the highestest was MMA 100g, EDGMA 5g, DMA 0.2g, of MED-2.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of denture base resins. According to manufacturer's instructions, resin specimens were made. Group 1 : heat-polymerizing acrylic resin (Luciton $199^{(R)}$) Group 2 : heat-polymerizing acrylic resin containing polyhedraloligosilsesquioxane(POSS resin) Group 3 : auto-polymerizing acrylic resin (Repair $Acrylic^{(R)}$) Group 4 : direct relining auto-polymerizing acrylic resin (Tokuso $Rebase^{(R)}$). Fresh specimens 24 hrs. and 72 hrs. soaked specimens in distil)ed water were made. Responses with metabolic assay and mutagenesis assay to eluates from resin specimens were measured. Cultures with medium alone provided controls. Cytotoxicity was assessed with agar overlay test. The results were as follows; 1. Group 4 showed higher cytotoxicity than Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 in fresh, 24-an4 72-hour immersion caries (p<.05). Group 3 showed higher cytotoxicity than Group 2 in fresh cases and showed higher cytotoxicity than Group 1 and Group 2 in 24-and 72-hour immersion cases (p<.05) . Group 1 and Group 2 showed no significant difference. 2. All acrylic denture base resins skewed significant increase of cell activity as immersion time increased (p<.05). 3. Auto-polymerizing acrylic denture base resins skewed higher cytotoxicity than heat-polymerizing acrylic denture base resins (p<.05). 4. All acrylic denture base resins showed lower mutagenicity than controls (p<.05).
Statement of Problem: The residual monomer of denture base materials causes hypersensitivity on oral mucosa and intereferes with the mechanical properties of the cured resin. The amount of residual monomer is influenced by materials, curing cycle, processing method, and etc. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the residual methyl methacrylate(MMA) content of injection molded denture base polymer, and to compare this with the self-cured resin and the conventional compression molded heat-cured resin. Materials and Methods: Disc shaped test specimens (50mm in diameter and 3mm thick) were prepared in a conventional flasking technique with gypsum molding. One autopolymerized denture base resins (Vertex Sc. Dentimex. Netherlands) and two heat-cured denture base resins (Vertex RS. Dentimex. Netherlands, Ivocap. Ivoclar Vivadent, USA) were used. The three types of specimens were processed according to the manufacturer's instruction. After polymerization, all specimens were stored in the dark at room temperature for 7 days. There were 10 specimens in each of the test groups. 3-mm twist drills were used to obtain the resin samples and 650mg of the drilled sample were collected for each estimation. Gas chromatography (Agillent 6890 Plus Gas Chromatograph, Agillent Co, USA) was used to determine the residual MMA content of 10 test specimens of each three types of polymer. Results: The residual monomer content of injection molded denture base resins was $1.057{\pm}0.141%$. The residual monomer content of injection molded denture base resins was higher than that of compression molded heat cured resin ($0.867{\pm}0.169%$). However, there was no statistical significant difference between two groups (p>0.01). The level of residual monomer in self cured resin($3.675{\pm}0.791$) was higher than those of injection molded and compression molded heat cured resins (p<0.01). Conclusion: With respect to ISO specification pass / fail test (2.2% mass fraction) of residual monomer, injection molding technique($1.057{\pm}0.141%$) is a clinically useful and safe technique in terms of residual monomer.
Statement of problem: The failure of adhesion between the resilient denture liner and the denture base is a serious problem in clinic. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of denture base resin surface pretreatments (mechanical and/or chemical) on the tensile bond strength between a resilient liner and processed denture resin. Material and method. Acrylic-based resilient liners (Soft liner; GC co., Japan & Coe-Soft; GC America Inc. USA) and silicone-based resilient liners (Mucosoft, Parkell Inc., USA & Dentusil; Bosworth co., USA) were used. Specimens in each soft lining material were divided two groups with or without mechanical pretreatment. Each denture base specimen received 1 of 4 chemical pretreatments including: (1) no treatment, (2) 30-s acetone treatment, (3) 15-s methylene chloride treatment, (4) 180-s methyl methacrylate treatment. All specimens were thermocycled and placed under tension until failure in a universal testing machine. Results: 1. Silicone-based resilient liners exhibited significantly higher tensile bond strengths than acrylic-based resilient liners (P<.05). 2. Grinding the denture base resin improved tensile bond strengths of silicone-based resilient liners, but reduced tensile bond strengths of acrylic-based resilient liners (P<.05). 3. In acrylic-based resilient liners, treating with acetone significantly increased the bond strength of Soft liner and treating with methyl methacrylate significantly increased the bond strength of Coe-Soft (P<.05). However they were not effective compared to silicone-based resilient liner. 4. In silicone-based resilient liners, treating with all chemical etchants significantly increased the bond strength of Mucosoft to denture base, and treating with methylene chloride and methyl methacrylate increased the bond strength of Dentusil to denture base (P<.05). Conclusion: Although chemical and mechanical pretreatments were not effective on tensile bond strength of acrylic-based resilent liner to denture base, treating the denture base resin surface with appropriate chemical etchants after mechanical pretreatment significantly increased the tensile bond strength of silicone-based resilient liner to denture base.
This is a research for thickness change of denture base according to the shape of sprue & investment position of denture base in flask when injecting polyamid base resin for flexible partial denture as a part of study for Valplast among the flexible partial denture with a nylon base. It has been introduced several kinds of flexible partial denture product with a nylon base, but Valplast is the most widely used product among them. Valplast has been the most generally used material today since developed in 1950s in the United States as a material for flexible partial denture. Valplast is much more aesthetic than general metal-acrylic partial denture due to its translucent pink color and biocompatibility in terms of material characteristic. It keeps its flexibility for a long time after production, imposes a less burden on the teeth used as abutment, and it can be easily insert and remove due to its particular suppleness. Moreover, it is felt like real teeth more than metal-acrylic partial denture when being put in and takes alveolar bone under good protection since it receives occlusal force equally under the denture base. The most outstanding feature of Valplast is flexibility. The extent of its flexibility is determined by width & thickness of denture base. Considering general working procedure of Valplast, it can be seen that the thickness of denture base formed out of wax is increasing by the pressure while injecting resin. This research is to decide and test on the thickness increasing of Valplast by injecting pressure and the hypothesis upon that and is to prepare the basis estimating the increasing extent of thickness of denture base on the basis of the test result. In this test, it is expected occlusal malposition & thickness increasing of denture base by injecting pressure according to 4 kinds of test data which are to select 3 types of sprue method settling the forefront position at which the test material of fixed standard can be invested and to position the test material at the rearmost part keeping the minimum distance to set sprue. For 4 kinds of injecting test by investment position & sprue type, 20 test materials, 5 for each test were produced and a pressure of 1,180Kg was given with automatic injector of air cylinder type. The results are as follows: 1. For the amount of thickness increasing of denture base by investment position, the thickness of front investment is less increasing than the one of rear investment. 2. For the amount of thickness increasing of denture base by sprue type, the thickness of straight decompression sprue type which can absorb the injecting pressure after injecting polyamide base resin is less increasing than the other sprue types.
Statement of problem: Removable partial denture and complete denture often require denture base relines to improve the fit against the tissue-bearing mucosa because of gradual changes in edentulous ridge contours and resorption of underlying bone structure. Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the effect of surface design on bond strength of relining denture base resins to denture base acrylic resin. Materials and method: Heat curing resin(Lucitone 199, Dentsply U.S.A. and Vertex, Dentimex, Holland), self curing resin(Tokuso rebase, Tokuyama, Japan), and visible light curing resin(Triad, Dentsply, U.S.A.) were used in this study. The surface designs were classified as butt, bevel and rabbet joint and the bond strengths were measured by Universial Testing Machine (Zwick 2020, Zwick Co., Germany). Results and Conclusion: The obtained results from this study were as follows ; 1. The bond strength of Vertex resin was higher than those of Tokuso rebase and Triad. 2. The bond strength of rabbet and bevel joint was higher than that of butt joint. 3. The failure mode of Triad and Tokuso rebase was mainly adhesive, but cohesive failure was shown mainly in vertex.
Purpose: We compare the bond strength of heat-cured PMMA of Lucitone 199 and QC-20 and Tokuyama Rebase Resin of self-cured resin, which are widely used and well accepted in clinical practice. In order to test the mechanical bonding and chemical bonding, we will compare the bond strength between EstheShot Bright, Smiletone, Repair and Rebase resins. Methods: The denture base resin used in this study was PMMA heat-cured QC-20 and Lucitone 199, polyamide resin EstheShot Bright, Smiletone. And Two types of self-curing Rapid Repair and Tokuyama Rebase were used as resection resins. To measure the bond strength, the denture specimens were fabricated in the size of $10{\times}64{\times}3.5mm$ as instructed by the manufacturer. A surface treatment agent was applied to the cut surfaces of each denture specimen, and the specimens were placed in a preformed silicone mold, and autoclaved excimer resins were prepared. The bending strength of the fabricated specimens was measured using a universal testing machine (STM-5, United Calibration Co., U.S.A.) to measure the three-point bending strength. Results: In both polycarbonate and polyacetal resin, a special resin surface treatment agent showed higher bonding strength than the resin surface treatment agent(p<0.05). Regardless of the type of surface treatment, polycarbonate showed higher bond strength than polyacetal resin(p<0.05). Conclusion: It is considered desirable to use a special surface treating agent for the thermoplastic denture base resin such as polycarbonate and polyacetal resin.
One of the primary advantage of acrylic resin teeth is their ability to bond chemically to the denture base resins. But, occasionally, failure have been observed in which acrylic resin teeth break lose from the denture, indicating that chemical bonding does not always occur. The most probable explanation for this type of failure was the presence of a trace of wax remaining as a residue on the surfaces of the teeth after the boiling-out procedure which adgered to the tooth surface and prevented bonding. The purpose of this stdy was preparing the specimens of denture base resin with acrylic resin teeth that four treatment method to ridge lap portion of the tooth and investigated bond between the teeth and denture base resin with tensile strength. Compared results of tensile strength on test specimens were as follows: 1. The mean of strength among the four test groups showed the difference was significant enough(P 0.01). The order of its strength mean was methylene chloride treatment group, detergent solution treatment group, kerosene-ether treatment grgoup, boiling water only group. 2. In compared results between the wax eliminating method groups, there were significant difference between the boiling water only group and other groups(P 0.01), no significant difference were found in the wax eliminating method groups except boiling water only group(P 0.05).
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare mechanical and physical properties of injection-molded thermoplastic denture base resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this study, six commercially available products (VA; Valplast, LC; Lucitone, ST; Smiltone, ES; Estheshot-Bright, AC; Acrytone, WE; Weldenz) were selected from four types of thermoplastic denture base materials (Polyamide, Polyester, Acrylic resin and Polypropylene). The flexural properties and shore D hardness have been investigated and water sorption and solubility, and color stability have evaluated. RESULTS. For the flexural modulus value, ES showed the highest value and WE showed significantly lower value than all other groups (P<.05). Most of experimental groups showed weak color stability beyond the clinically acceptable range. CONCLUSION. Within the limits of this study, thermoplastic denture base resin did not show sufficient modulus to function as a denture base. In addition, all resins showed discoloration with clinical significance, and especially polyamides showed the lowest color stability.
A testing machine was devised and constructed for the purpose of measuring the retentive forces of maxillary complete denture bases in subjects.
Forth complete denture bases were made for ten subjects with three different denture base materials, following the usual denture construction technique.
Retentive forces of the forty dentures were determined at seven locations.
The tests on each base were repeated three times at intervals of 5 minutes.
Differences in retention values were evaluated statistically.
1) Differences in retention values were found by the differences of the denture base materials, but acrylic resin was similar to chromium cobalt alloy.
2) The chromium cobalt alloy and acrylic resin bases from master models revealed the best retention values, the gold alloy base from master model was the poor second and the acrylic resin base from snap model was the third.
3) The retention values for hook-1 revealed higher than that for hook-2 and the retention values for hook-3 revealed the lowest value.
