  • The present study purposed to prevent oral diseases and to improve oral health in children. For this purpose, we selected 70 cases who are 5~7 years old preschoolers at the kindergarten affiliated to G College in Gyeongsangbukdo, and analyzed the general patterns of oral care and the relation of the patterns with dental plaque and deciduous dental caries in the children. Specifically, we conducted oral examination and applied pit and fissure sealant according to the eruption of deciduous molar and first molar. In addition, we executed the 1st and 2nd tooth brushing instruction (TBI), and surveyed S-OHI and PHP twice. Excluding 14 preschoolers who did not appear in the 2nd survey, we performed the study with 56 preschoolers and drew conclusions as follows. 1. The number of decayed or missed or filled teeth among deciduous teeth was 3 or more in 42.9% of female children, and 46.4% of male children, so male children showed a slightly higher rate. 2. The degree of dental plaque formation was $1.64{\pm}1.22$ among the surveyed children. 3. The oral health index was lower after TBI than before in all the children (P<.001). 4. Change in the oral health index was particularly larger in 7 year old female children (p<.005). 5. The patient hygiene performance index was lower after TBI than before in both the buccal surface and lingual surface of the children (p<.005). 6. The patient hygiene performance index was lower after TBI than before in all of male children's teeth except the right maxillary first deciduous molar (p<.001).

  • Amelogenesis imperfecta is a group of hereditary defects of enamel unassociated with any other generalized defects. The prevalence of this condition has been estimated to range from 1 in 14,000 to 1 in 16,000, depending on the population studied. It may be differentiated into three general types : hypoplastic, hypocalcified, and hypomaturation, depending on the clinical presentation of the defects and the likely stage of enamel formation that is primarily affected. The dentin and root form are usually normal, but the enamel may lack the normal prismatic structure, being laminated throughout its thickness or at the periphery, with the result that these teeth are more resistant to decay. This case is that of an six-year-old girl brought to the pediatric dentistry department by her parents for esthetic reasons and also because of slight dental sensitivity. Clinical and radiographic examinations confirmed amelogenesis imperfecta. The author has treated with the crowning of the primary molars, using prefomed NiCr crowns and periodic fluoride application on whole dentition.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic information snack intake frequency, eating patterns and current dental caries in high school students. A total of 626 students (333 males, 293 females) in Gimhae city participated in this study. The survey conducted by using a self-administered questionnaire in January, 2008. Dental caries-related information was obtained during the students' physical examination at the designated clinical hospital in 2007. The results were as follows. Sixty three point nine percent of the students were shown to have dental caries, which includes a sealant. The average number of dental caries was 3.1, which was greater in female than in male students (p < 0.001). Eighty six percent of the students were shown to maintain correct toothbrushing habits to prevent dental caries. Twenty percent of the participants brushed there teeth ‘instantly’ a meal or snack, and 27.3% of the participants brushed there teeth, gum and tongue, and 58.9% of the participants received toothbrushing education. In snack intake frequency, participants with no dental caries had preference to white milk whereas those with dental caries had preference to snacks such as chewing gums and carbonated beverages. Female students were shown to have more dental caries maybe because of their higher snack intake frequency in chocolate, cookies and chips, yoghurt and ice-cream. Dental caries did not affect eating behaviors. This study suggests that more education for correct toothbrushing and cariogenic and detergent foods are needed for better dental hygiene.

  • This in vitro study was performed to assess the effect of surface sealing on the microleakage of class V composite resin restorations that underwent several aging treatments. Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of 100 sound extracted premolars and restored with a hybrid light-cured composite resin according to the manufacturer's instructions. They were randomly divided into two groups consisting of 50 samples: group I, without surface sealing, and group II, in which margins were etched and surface sealant was applied. After thermocycling, each group was divided into five subgroups, respectively, to represent the five aging treatments: group A = no further treatment (only thermocycling), B = toothbrushing, C = load cycling, D = toothbrushing followed by load cycling, and E = aging treatment in deionized water for six months. Microleakage was assessed by examining the penetration of 2% methylene blue dye. The following results were obtained: 1. At occlusal and cervical margins in groups without surface sealing, there was no significant difference in microleakage after the several aging treatments (p>0.05). 2. The occlusal margins of groups with surface sealing showed no significant differences after the several aging treatments (p>0.05). 3. In the cervical margins of groups with surface sealing, microleakage significantly increased after load cycling or aging in deionized water for six months (p<0.05). 4. The no-further-treatment group and the toothbrushing group with surface sealing showed less microleakage than the corresponding groups without surface sealing (p<0.05). 5. The surface-sealed groups with load cycling or aging in deionized water showed no significant difference in microleakage to the corresponding groups without surface sealing (p>0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that the surface sealant infiltrating through the gap of the cervical margin exerted a positive effect on microleakage at the initial stage, but the effect was not sufficient to overcome the stress generated by the cuspal flexure during occlusal loading and water absorption.
