The purpose of this study was to examine the morphological characteristics and combined effects of fluoride application and laser irradiation on artificial caries-like lesion formation in bovine enamel. Enamel specimens were divided into five experiment group and placed in no-treatment(group C), APF application alone(group F), laser irradiation alone(group L), APF application before laser irradiation (group FL), and APF application after laser irradiation(group LF) on artificial caries-like lesion. Sound enamel was used as a control group. The ultrastructural changes and physical effects of the fluorided and lased enamel has been investigated by using SEM, enamel solubility and microhardness test as well as distributions of calcium, phosphorus and fluoride in internal enamel by using EPMA. The following results were obtained. 1. In the all experiment groups, the amounts of dissolved calcium of enamel surfaces significantly decreased according to increasing exposure time of acid solution than control group(P<0.001). Group L showed higher than that group FL and LF in 30 and 60min(P<0.05). 2. The microhardness values of enamel surface in the control group was highest than that in the other experiment groups. Group F, L, FL and LF were significantly increased than group C(P<0.001). The enamel surface treated with APF produced deposites of numerous small globules and lased enamel showed a cracker-like appearance with microcrack and small pore. Numerous deposits were infiltrated in the fissured portion of enamel treated with APF after laser irradiation. 4. In the case of APF application alone, the elevation of the fluoride profile can be seen within $5{\mu}m$ of the outermost layer and a similar profile observed in the specimen treated with APF before laser irradiation. However, the specimen treated with APF after laser Irradiation showed a large elevation within $10{\mu}m$ of the outermost layer of the enamel. 5. The higher Ca/P ratios were observed in $10{\mu}m$ depth of lased and fluorided enamel when compared to the sound and carious enamel. The fluoride content decreased rapidly with distance from enamel surface, in the group F, fluoride concentration was significantly higher than that in the group C, L, FL, LF and control group according to increasing enamel depth (P<0.05).
The purpose of this study is to obtain the data of prestep in cavity preparation by observing changed conditions of laser irradiated dental hard tissues. The forty five extracted caries free human molars were divided into three groups and each group into five subgroups. A $CO_2$ laser irradiation was performed each subgroup of group I for one second with output power of 5 W, 10 Wand 20 W. On group II, laser irradiation was done ten times for 0.1 second duration using same power ratings as group I. On group III, laser irradiation was done 0.1 second, 0.2 second and 0.4 second with output power of 50 W. We investigated mineral contents and crater wall of obtained specimens, i.e., laser irradiated teeth, using computer controlled electron probe microanalyzer and scanning electron microscope. The following results were obtained: 1. Both calcium and phosphorus contents in laser irradiated enamel crater wall were increased, and magnesium content was decreased, but these trends were not statistically significant. 2. In laser irradiated dentin, change of mineral content was more significant. 3. In laser irradiated enamel and dentin, there were no significant differences on mineral content change due to irradiation condition and energy density. 4. In scanning electron microscopic study, enamel rods of the crater wall were fused and clefts were observed in parallel with the direction of enamel rod for all groups. 5. In laser irradiated dentin, irregular fusion and clefts were observed. In irradiated teeth with high power and short duration, the locally formed narrow crater wall was observed.

PURPOSE. Adequate passive-fitting of one-piece cast 3-element implant-supported frameworks is hard to achieve. This short communication aims to present an alternative method for section of one-piece cast frameworks and for casting implant-supported frameworks. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three-unit implant-supported nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) frameworks were tested for vertical misfit (n = 6). The frameworks were cast as one-piece (Group A) and later transversally sectioned through a diagonal axis (Group B) and compared to frameworks that were cast diagonally separated (Group C). All separated frameworks were laser welded. Only one side of the frameworks was screwed. RESULTS. The results on the tightened side were significantly lower in Group C ($6.43{\pm}3.24{\mu}m$) when compared to Groups A ($16.50{\pm}7.55{\mu}m$) and B ($16.27{\pm}1.71{\mu}m$) ($P$ <.05). On the opposite side, the diagonal section of the one-piece castings for laser welding showed significant improvement in the levels of misfit of the frameworks (Group A, $58.66{\pm}14.30{\mu}m$; Group B, $39.48{\pm}12.03{\mu}m$; Group C, $23.13{\pm}8.24{\mu}m$) ($P$ <.05). CONCLUSION. Casting diagonally sectioned frameworks lowers the misfit levels. Lower misfit levels for the frameworks can be achieved by diagonally sectioning one-piece frameworks.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Preparation of implant beds with lasers is considered a safe and reliable method, but the accuracy of this technique has not been examined. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of implant bed preparation using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An Er,Cr:YSGG laser was applied to pig rib bone. The laser was employed at a 5.75 W power setting, 30 Hz/sec pulse repetition, and 70 ${\mu}s$ pulse duration with 50 % water and 60% air spray. According to laser tips the groups were divided as follows; Group 1: paralleled - shaped sapphire tip (0.6 mm${\Phi}$), Group 2: paralleled - shaped zirconia tip (0.6 mm${\Phi}$), Group 3: tapered sapphire tip (0.4 mm${\Phi}$). The Er,Cr:YSGG laser tip was separated by 1 mm from the bone and applied for 15 seconds in a non-contact mode. After the application, the bone was sectioned for specimens. Histologic measurements were determined by computerized morphometry. The length of the prepared bone surface was measured and the width of the entrance was measured. The results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA (P<0.05). RESULTS: The prepared length of group 3 was longer than that of group 2. The prepared bone width was larger than the width of the laser tip in every group. Additional bone removal was observed adjacent to the prepared area and displayed an irregular surface. CONCLUSION & DISCUSSION: Different cutting effects were observed according to the laser tip, emphasizing the importance of proper tip selection in the clinical setting. This preliminary study supported the existence of hydrokinetic effects.
One of the problems facing in all modern dental hospitals is the much efforts, manpower and space are needed to effectively sort and stack patients' charts of the various dental departments. In addition, the storage and prompt arrangement of x-ray films is also a problem. Therefore, if dental charts as well as films could be computerized, it would be easier to store and keep them; by data basing, many space, manpower and cost would be saved: data could also be effectively managed for the purpose of academic researches. This would be an epoch -making event in the development of dental hospital management. The purpose of this study is to develop a dental information processing program, that will be used to store dental treatment records and digital image data using a new record media, the optical card. The patients' charts from the dental hospital were selected. The treatment records of the chart were put into the treatment data -recording area of the program, and the digital images of various dental x-ray films were made with a scanner. These data were stored in the optical card and analyzed to get the following results: 1. In this program it is possible to put treatment records and image data into and out from the optical card, and it is impossible to correct and delete all data recorded on the optical card. 2. All data in the optical card system can be searched and analyzed on database. 3. The resolution of image data stored in optical card is above 5.9 lp/mm. 4, All data of dental charts used as samples, stored to optical cards, occupies average 14%, In conclusion, with the development of the storage system using the optical card, a dental patient's life-time treatment record can be stored in one optical card and used as a substitute for the dental chart.

Purpose: One of the most frequent complications related to dental implants is peri-implantitis, and the characteristics of implant surfaces are closely related to the progression and resolution of inflammation. Therefore, a technical modality that can effectively detoxify the implant surface without modification to the surface is needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of erbium-doped: yttrium, aluminium and garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation on the microstructural changes in double acid-etched implant surfaces according to the laser energy and the application duration. Methods: The implant surface was irradiated using an Er:YAG laser with different application energy levels (100 mJ/pulse, 140 mJ/pulse, and 180 mJ/pulse) and time periods (1 minute, 1.5 minutes, and 2 minutes). We then examined the change in surface roughness value and microstructure. Results: In a scanning electron microscopy evaluation, the double acid-etched implant surface was not altered by Er:YAG laser irradiation under the condition of 100 mJ/pulse at 10 Hz for any of the irradiation times. However, we investigated the reduced sharpness of the specific ridge microstructure that resulted under the 140 mJ/pulse and 180 mJ/pulse conditions. The reduction in sharpness became more severe as laser energy and application duration increased. In the roughness measurement, the double acid-etched implants showed a low roughness value on the valley area before the laser irradiation. Under all experimental conditions, Er:YAG laser irradiation led to a minor decrease in surface roughness, which was not statistically significant. Conclusions: The recommended application settings for Er:YAG laser irradiation on double acid-etched implant surface is less than a 100 mJ/pulse at 10 Hz, and for less than two minutes in order to detoxify the implant surface without causing surface modification.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of low - power laser used in the medical field for various purposes to suppress pain responses evoked by noxious electrical or mechanical stimuli. After both inferior alveolar nerves and the left anterior digastric muscle of cats under general anesthesia were exposed, a recording electrode for the jaw opening reflex was inserted into the anterior digastric muscle. The right inferior alveolar nerve was dissected under a surgical microscope until the response of the functional single nerve could be evoked by the electrical stimulation of the dental pulp or oral mucosa. The electrical stimulus was applied with a rectangular pulse of 10 ms duration for measuring the threshold intensity of a single nerve fiber in the inferior alveolar nerve which responds to stimulation of dental pulp and oral mucosa. Then a pulse of 1 ms duration was applied for determination of conduction velocity. A noxious mechanical stimulus to the oral mucosa was applied by clamping the receptive field with an arterial clamp. The Ga-As diodide laser(wave length, 904 nm ; frequency, 1,000 Hz) was irradiated to the prepared tooth cavity, inferior alveolar nerve and oral mucosa as a pulse wave of 2 mW for 6 minutes. This was followed by a continuous wave of 15 mW for 3 minutes. The action potential of the nerve and EMG of the digastric muscle evoked by the noxious electrical stimulus and nerve response to noxious mechanical stimulus were compared at intervals of before, immediately after, and at 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 minutes after laser irradiation. The results were as follows: The conduction velocity of the intrapulpal $A{\delta}$- nerve fiber recorded from the inferior alveolar nerve before irradiation had a mean value of $6.68{\pm}2.07m/sec$. The laser irradiation did not affect the conduction velocity of the AS - nerve fiber and did not change the threshold intensity or amplitude of the action potential either. The EMG of the digastric muscle evoked by noxious electrical stimulation to the tooth was not changed by the laser irradiation, whether in latency, threshold intensity or amplitude. The laser irradiated to the receptive field of the oral mucosa which was subjected to noxious stimuli did not affect the amplitude of the action potential or the frequency either.
Purpose: This in vitro study was conducted to evaluate the marginal and internal fit of three-unit Co-Cr frameworks fabricated by computer-aided metal milling and direct metal laser sintering(DMLS) systems in comparison to conventional casting method. Methods: Three-unit Co-Cr frameworks were fabricated by conventional wax up with casting(CWC), computer-aided metal milling(MM) and direct metal laser sintering(DMLS)(n=10 each). The marginal and internal fit of specimens were examined using a light-body silicone impression material. The thickness of light-body silicone was measured at eight reference points each, divided in the mesio distal and bucco lingual directions. All measurements were conducted by a stereomicroscope. Digital photos were taken at 150× magnification and then analyzed using a measurement software. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Bonferroni correction were used for analyzing the results. Results: The mean(SD) is ㎛ for fabrication methods, the mean marginal fit were recorded respectively, DMLS 39(27), followed by CWC 63(38), MM 220(128). and the mean internal fit CWC 95(47), DMLS 116(49), MM 210(152). In addition, the largest gap was found in the occlusal surface area among the internal measurement areas of all groups. Conclusion: As a result, the direct metal laser sintering method showed better marginal and internal fit than the metal milling method. The marginal and internal fit were statistically different according to the three fabrication methods(p<0.001). Except the MM group, the marginal fit of the CWC and DMLS groups was below the clinical standard of 120 ㎛. Based on the results of this study, it can be applied to clinical use in the future.
