  • Purpose: The characteristics of site plan and space configuration of public dentistry through examining the public dental healthcare centers for the disabled in Korea and comparison between them are necessary for the development of planning of the dental healthcare system. This study has been started to provide basic informations such as nationwide distribution, site relationship, and space configuration for the planning of public dental hospital architecture. Methods: Literature review of publicness and public dental healthcare and investigation on current status of public dental healthcare center for the disabled in Korea have been conducted. The site plan and space configuration of eight public healthcare centers for the disabled have been analyzed. Results: The result of this study can be summarized in three points. The second one is that the types of the dental healthcare center for the disabled are divided with remodeling type which is diverted from existed dental or medical out patient clinic space or independent building type which is planned with a new and exclusive usage for the disabled. The third one is that the space configuration of dental healthcare center for the disabled is needed more required programs, larger treatment unit space, and more private clinic space than typical dental treatment plan. Implications: This study is the starting point for the research of public dentistry and it is necessary to analyze the dental prevention and dental public policy to develop the public dental healthcare system.

  • Background: Although a direct association has been established between oral health management and maintaining military combat readiness and fulfilling defense duties, unmet dental-care needs have been consistently reported, and there has been little research on the role of mobile healthcare services in addressing this issue. This study explored the association between unmet dental-care needs and the intention to use mobile healthcare services among military personnel. Methods: This study was conducted on military personnel who visited a military hospital in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, from August 19 to August 31, 2024. A total of 150 self-administered questionnaires were distributed and 135 valid responses were analyzed. The analysis included general characteristics, dental care utilization, and intention to use mobile healthcare services. Statistical analyses, such as t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression, were employed to determine the factors influencing the intention to use mobile healthcare services. Results: This study found that military personnel with unmet dental-care needs had significantly higher intentions to use mobile healthcare services than those without such needs. The analysis revealed that the key factors influencing this intention were perceived health status and previous dental-care utilization. Specifically, participants who rated their overall health as better and those who had used dental care services in the past year showed a greater tendency to express interest in mobile healthcare services than those who did not. Furthermore, unmet dental-care needs were more prevalent among soldiers who reported limited access to dental facilities owing to time constraints or a lack of prioritization of oral health, which increased their inclination toward utilizing mobile healthcare solutions as an alternative. Conclusion: Mobile healthcare solutions can offer personalized and timely care as viable alternatives for improving oral health management in the military. Moreover, integrating mobile healthcare services into military health systems could significantly reduce unmet dental-care needs and enhance overall combat readiness by promoting better health outcomes.

From June 25 to 30, 2023, the contents of the study were thoroughly explained, consent was obtained from the research subjects, and a questionnaire was administered via an internet service. The questionnaires of 28 participants who responded completely were used for analysis. The collected data were statistically processed using IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 22.0 (IBM). Results: The use of big data in digital dental healthcare, digital dental health system, mobile dental health, dental health analysis, and telehealthcare were all heavily surveyed, with an average score of 3.97 or higher on a 5-point Likert scale. The areas where big data can be utilized in digital dental healthcare are as follows. The utilization rate for three-dimensional digital product development via linkage with big data systems and industrial field manufacturing technology was found to be 4.11±0.67, and the analysis of trends by age in the occurrence of various oral diseases was found to be 4.00±0.98. Conclusion: In the future, research into the viability of big data's success in the medical data field, which is directly related to human life, is needed. Additionally, social policies and regulations regarding big data-related information and standards in dental healthcare are necessary.

  • Background: This study aimed to identify the role of dental hygienists in exchanges between North and South Korea to lower gaps in the level of dental healthcare between the two countries by conducting a Delphi survey with specialists and identifying alternative policies regarding the utilization of dental hygienists in such exchanges. Methods: Two Delphi surveys were conducted with the participation of nine specialists, and descriptive statistical analyses including mean and standard deviation were performed on the collected data. Results: Among methods of exchange and cooperation regarding oral healthcare under the current North Korean medical system, the issue considered most urgent was the "establishment of oral healthcare infrastructure." The most important short-term strategy was identified as the "selection and formation of partnerships in the field of inter-Korean oral health exchange and cooperation." The mid-term strategy was identified as the "establishment of cooperation in the dental industry, centered on educational cooperation projects." The long-term strategy included "joint R&D projects, oral health surveys, and business development." In order to determine how best to use dental hygienists during inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation, the respondents placed urgency on the "establishment of joint cooperation projects for oral health promotion and early examination and the treatment of dental diseases and planning of community research projects" and "the role of oral health education and media development for residents." Conclusion: Cooperation is necessary regarding the preparation of oral healthcare exchanges that aim to encourage unity between North and South Korea and reduce the gaps between the North and South regarding oral health conditions. Therefore, continuous and reasonable discussions and research are needed regarding the utilization of dental hygienists in such exchanges.

This study has been started to provide basic information for the planning of education and hospital architecture in dentistry. Methods: Literature review of space analysis and investigation on current status of dentistry in Korea have been conducted. The site plans of eleven schools of dentistry and dental hospitals have been analyzed with S3 axial analyzer in space syntax. Results: The result of this study can be summarized in four points. The second one is that the types of relationship between dentistry and main campus are diverse from school and hospital in the main campus to independent dental campus in the city center. The third one is that the integration, connectivity and ERAM(3) of dental hospital are greater than school of dentistry and it means that dental hospital is located in easy access area compared with school of dentistry. The fourth one is that school of dentistry roles the connection space between main campus and dental hospital. Implications: It is necessary to analyze the site plan and arrangement of school of dentistry and dental hospital in the campus to develop the dental healthcare system in the city.

  • The purpose of this study was to survey Korean soldiers' oral healthcare practice and attitudes along with their stress level, and thereby to identify possible correlations among those factors. The survey was conducted from June 11 to Oct. 10, 2008 in G-gun, Chungbuk. province for soldiers. The questionnaire was consisted of the oral healthcare practice and attitude, stress level. As a result, it was found that our respondents scored 3.55 out of possible 9 point in their stress level, which indicated that they had relatively low stress on the whole. According to survey on their oral healthcare practice and attitude depending on their general characteristics, it was found that the higher academic career was associated directly with the more practices of oral healthcare, and nonsmoking group showed more practices of oral healthcare than smoking group. It was found that 'schoolwork and workplace' and 'sexual problem' were critical stress factors on our respondents' oral healthcare attitudes. And it was also found that 'outward appearance complex', 'personality complex', 'conflicts with parents' and 'sexual problem' were critical stress factors on their oral healthcare practices. Since our soldiers' maintenance of their oral healthcare is beneficial to both individual and national aspects, it is necessary for interested parties including dental surgeons to make efforts to develop a promotional program for military dental healthcare project and provide a series of reorientations for soldiers, so that they can have more positive oral healthcare practices and attitudes.
