The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a self-etching primer on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and on the failure pattern of bracket-adhesive interfaces in dry or wet condition. Brackets were bonded to extracted human teeth according to one of three experimental protocols. In the Group P, teeth were etched with $37\%$ phosphoric acid. After the Transbond XT Primer was applied onto the etched surfaces, the brackets were bonded with Transbond XT(3M, Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) and light cured for 40 seconds. In the Group SD, a self-etching primer(3M, Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) was placed on the enamel for 3 seconds and gently evaporated with air, as suggested by the manufacturer. The brackets were then bonded with Transbond XT as in the Group P In the Group SW, artificial saliva was applied to the enamel surface for 10 seconds to allow complete hydration of the surface before application self-etching primer The brackets were then bonded following the procedures of Group SD. Each group was divided into 2 sub-groups(0.5h, 24h) according to debonding time. Shear bond strengths were measured by Instron universal testing machine. After debonding, the teeth and brackets were examined under scanning electron microscope and assessed with the adhesive remnant index. The result obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The shear bond strengths were high enough to use clinically in all testing groups, but the shear bond strengths of Group SD and SW were significantly lower than Group P(p<0.05). 2. With respect to comparison of debonding time, 24h debonding samples exhibited heigher shear bond strength than 0.5h debonding samples in Group P, SD and SW(p<0.05). 3. In the self etching primer groups(Group SD and Group SW), there was no significant difference in mean shear bond strength between under dry and wet state(p>0.05). 4. There was a greater frequency of ARI score of 0 and 1 with the Group P. On the other hand, there was a higher frequency of ARI scores of 2 and 3 with Group SD and Group SW(p<0.05).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of etching time and bonding agents on bond strength of sealant applied to the occlusal surface of primary molars. Forty non-carious exfoliated human primary molars were included in the study. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups for measurement. For group I, no acid etching treatment was used. For group II, III, and IV, acid etching gels were applied on the occlusal surface for 15, 30, and 60 seconds, respectively. Each group was divided into 2 subgroups; one group was treated with bonding agents on the enamel while the other was not. Microtensile bond strength was evaluated using a universal testing machine. There were no statistically significant differences in bond strength with varying duration of etching among groups. The results revealed that the use of bonding agents prior to application of fissure sealant increased the bond strength(p < 0.05). It could be concluded that etching time greater than 15 seconds does not significantly enhance the bond strength, but the use of bonding agents as an intermediate layer between the primary molar and fissure sealant would be beneficial in increasing the bond strength.

PURPOSE. To evaluate the adhesion to CAD/CAM feldspathic blocks by failure analysis and shear bond strength test (SBSt) of different restorative systems and different surface treatments, for purpose of moderate chipping repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A self-adhering flowable composite (Vertise Flow, Kerr) containing bi-functional phosphate monomers and a conventional flowable resin composite (Premise Flow, Kerr) applied with and without adhesive system (Optibond Solo Plus, Kerr) were combined with three different surface treatments (Hydrofluoric Acid Etching, Sandblasting, combination of both) for repairing feldspathic ceramics. Two commercial systems for ceramic repairing were tested as controls (Porcelain Repair Kit, Ultradent, and CoJet System, 3M). SBSt was performed and failure mode was evaluated using a digital microscope. A One-Way ANOVA (Tukey test for post hoc) was applied to the SBSt data and the Fisher's Exact Test was applied to the failure analysis data. RESULTS. The use of resin systems containing bi-functional phosphate monomers combined with hydrofluoric acid etching of the ceramic surface gave the highest values in terms of bond strength and of more favorable failure modalities. CONCLUSION. The simplified repairing method based on self-adhering flowable resin combined with the use of hydrofluoric acid etching showed high bond strength values and a favorable failure mode. Repairing of ceramic chipping with a self-adhering flowable resin associated with hydrofluoric acid etching showed high bond strength with a less time consuming and technique-sensitive procedure compared to standard procedure.
The purpose of this study was to compare the normal and two times of application time of six self-etching primers applied to enamel using microshear bond strength (uSBS) test and the finding of scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Crown of sixty human molars were bisected mesiodistally and buccal and lingual enamel of crowns were partially exposed and polished with 600 grit SiC papers. They were divided into one of two equal groups subdivided into one of six equal groups (n = 10) by self-etching primer adhesives. After the same manufacture's adhesive resin and composites were bonded on the enamel surface of each group, the bonded specimens were subjected to uSBS testing and also observed under SEM. In conclusion, generally two times of primer application time increased the enamel uSBS, especially with the statistical increase of bond strength in adhesives involving high-pH primers.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the resin infiltration into dentin of one-bottle adhesive systems and self-etching primer bonded to Class V cavities using confocal laser scanning microscope(CLSM). Material and Methods : Forty Class V cavities were prepared from freshly extracted caries-free Human teeth. These teeth were divided into two groups based on the presence of cervical abrasion: Group I, cervical abrasion : Group II, wedge-shaped cavity preparation. Resin-dentin interfaces were produced with two one-bottle dentin bonding systems-ONE COAT BOND(OCB; Coltene$^R$) and Syntac$^R$SPrint$^{TM}$(SS; VIVADENT)-, one self-etching priming system-CLEARFIL$^{TM}$ SE BOND (SB : KURARAY)- and one multi-step dentin bonding system-Scotchbond$^{TM}$Multi-Purpose (SBMP, 3M Dental Products)-as control according to manufacturers' instructions. Cavities were restored with Spectrum$^{R}$(Dentsply). Specimens were immersed in saline for 24 hours and sectioned longitudinally with a low-speed diamond disc. The resin-dentin interfaces were microscopically observed using CLSM. The quality of resin-infiltrated dentin layers were evaluated by five dentists using 0~4 scale. Results : Confocal laser scanning microscopal investigations using primer labeled with rhodamine B showed that the penetration of the primer occurred along the cavity margins. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's Multiple Range test revealed that the primer penetration of the group 2(wedge-shaped cavity preparation) was more effective than group 1(cervical abrasion) and that of the gingival interfaces was more effective than the occlusal interfaces. In the one-bottle dentin bonding systems, the resin penetration score of OCB was compatible to SBMP, but those of SS and self-etching priming system, SB were lower than SBMP.

This study was performed to investigate the compatibility between 4 dentin adhesives and 4 resin luting cements. Dentin adhesives used in this study were All-Bond 2 (Bisco Inc., Schaumbrug, IL, USA), Clearfil SE-Bond (Kuraray Medical Inc, Osaka, Japan), Prompt L-Pop (3M Dental Products, St. Paul, MN, USA), One-Up Bond F (Tokuyama corp., Tokyo, Japan) Resin luting cements used in this study were Choice (Bisco Inc., Schaumbrug, IL, USA), Panavia F (Kuraray Medical Inc, Osaka, Japan), RelyX ARC (3M Dental Products, St. Paul, MN, USA) Bistite II DC (Tokuyama corp., Tokyo, Japan). Combination of each dentin adhesive and corresponding resin cement was made to 16 experimental groups. Flat dentin surfaces was created on mid-coronal dentin of extracted mandibular third molars, then dentin surface was polished with 320-grit silicon carbide abrasive papers. Indirect resin composite block (Tescera, Bisco) was fabricated. Its surface for bonding to tooth was polished with silicon carbide abrasive papers Each dentin adhesive was treated on tooth surface and resin composite overlay were luted with each resin cement. Each bonded specimen was poured in epoxy resin and sectioned occluso-gingivally into 1.0mm thick slab, then further sectioned into $1.0{\times}1.0mm^2$ composite-dentin beams. Microtensile bond strength was tested at a crosshead speed of 1.0mm/min. The data were analysed by one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple comparison tests The results of this study were as follows, 2-step self-etching dentin adhesive which has additional bonding resin is more comparison than tests. self-etching dentin adhesive.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the pulpal responses of dental adhesive resins. A total of 40 cavities of the permanent healthy teeth from 4 dogs were prepared. In the experimental group, the cavities were etched for 1 minute with citric acid and filled with experimental resins (ie. Super-Bond C & B$^{(R)}$). In the control group, the cavities were filled with calcium hydroxide base materials (ie. Dycal$^{(R)}$) without etching. The dogs were sacrificed at one, two, three and four weeks after the time of filling and the specimens were routinely prepared and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. The microscopic findings were as follows: Infiltration of inflammatory cells was not observed in both experimental and control groups. Change in the odontoblastic layer was not observed in all control groups but severe swelling was observed in deep dental pulp tissue of the control two and three week cases. Pulp tissue was recovered with plenty of fibrous component in the control four week case and reparative dentin formation was not occurred in all cases. Slight changes of the odontoblastic layer beneath the cavity were observed in the experimental one week case. In experimental two and three week cases, swelling of deep pulp tissue was increased and localized reparative dentin formation was observed. In the experimental four week case, odontoblastic layer was recovered with regular appearance and fibrous component of the pulp was increased, but reparative dentin formation was not evident.

Air abrasion technology can prepare enamel and dentin for bonding, similar to etching by acidic gels and solutions. Longer treatment can excavate pit and fissures, preparing the tooth for immediate placement of bonded resin materials. Although not appropriate for every clinical situation, the air abrasive technology minimizes heat, vibration and bone-conducted noise associated with conventional means of caries removal since the cutting is accomplished by air pressure. Also, patients treated with the air-abrasion technology rarely request anesthesia. Air abrasion technology was more effective in treating early carious lesions and stains compared to lesions where caries had already progressed to produce soft dentin and the strong air stream and noise caused by the evacuation system was a major discomfort to pediatric patients, and the experience and skillfulness of clinician should be required for accurate and proper tooth preparation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of water, saliva and blood contamination on the bonding strength of metal brackets with a self-etching primer/adhesive to enamel. Ninety-six extracted human teeth were divided into four groups. The brackets were bonded to enamel with a self- etching primer (3M/Unitek Dental Products. Monorovia California) according to one of four protocols. The teeth were bonded in a dry condition (group D) or in contamination with distilled water (group W), artificial saliva (group S). or fresh human blood (group B) Shear bond strengths were tested using an Instron Universal testing machine. After debonding. bracket and tooth surfaces were examined with a stereomicroscope. In each group, four samples were selected and examined with a Scanning electron microscope of the prepared enamel surface and resin-enamel interlace. The results obtained were summarized as follows: Shear bond Strength if group D $(15.22{\pm}2.86MPa)$ and W $(15.20{\pm}3.85 MPa)$ Were higher than in group B$(12.56{\pm}2.94MPa)$ (p<0.05). There were no statistical differences in the shear bond strengths between groups D. W and S (p>0.05). There was a tendency to have less residual adhesive remaining on the enamel surfaces of group B than group D. The SEW morphology of group D and W showed a more roughened etching pattern than group S and B. Water or saliva contamination on bending of orthodontic brackets with Transbond plus self etching primer had almost no influence on bond strength In this study, the blood contaminated group showed the lowest bond strength, but it was above the clinically acceptable bond strength (5.9-7.8 MPa, Reynold, 1975). The results of this study suggest that acceptable clinical bond strengths can be obtained in wet conditions when self-etching adhesives are used.
