The purpose of the study was to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of polycarboxylate cements and zinc phosphate cements in vitro. Human fibroblasts were cultured in ${\alpha}$-MEM, and each cement was manually mixed and filled in glass ring cylinder (8${\times}$8mm in diameter, in height.) Cement filled cylinders were placed in the center of the dish (35mm in diameter) containing 3ml of ${\alpha}$-MEM. Millipore filters to simulate dentinal barrier were also placed between the cylinder and the dish, then stored in 5% $CO_2$ containing chamber for 1 and 2 weeks at the temperature of $36.6^{\circ}C$. The results of the experiments were analyzed by counting the cells in the period of one week and two weeks respectively, and were assessed by calculating the cell multiplication rate and the relative growth rate. The experimental groups and the control group were compared. The results of the study were summarized as follows. 1. Durelone brand of the polycarboxylate cements showed marked cytotoxicity after one week, but after two weeks the toxicity decreased remarkably. Poly-F brand exhibited moderate cytotoxicity after one week, but after two weeks the toxicity slightly decreased. HY-BOND brand was weakly cytotoxic after one week, but after two weeks the toxicity became significant. 2. The cytotoxicity of the zinc phosphate cements was negligible after one week, but after two weeks Lee Smith brand revealed considerable cytotoxicity. 3. In general, the zinc phosphate cements were less cytotoxic than the polycarboxylate cements.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiopacities of various types of restorative materials with different thicknesses compared with enamel, dentin, and aluminum. Materials and Methods: Four bulk-fill resins, 2 hybrid ceramics, 2 micro-hybrid resin composites, 6 glass ionomer-based materials, 2 zinc phosphate cements, and an amalgam were used in the study. Twelve disk-shaped specimens were prepared from each of 17 restorative materials with thicknesses of 1 mm, 2 mm, and 4 mm (n=4). All the restorative material specimens with the same thickness, an aluminum (Al) step wedge, and enamel and dentin specimens were positioned on a phosphor storage plate and exposed using a dental X-ray unit. The mean gray values were measured on digital images and converted to equivalent Al thicknesses. Statistical analyses were performed using 2-way analysis of variance and the Bonferroni post hoc test(P<0.05). Results: Radiopacity was significantly affected by both the thickness and the material type (P<0.05). GCP Glass Fill had the lowest radiopacity value for samples of 1 mm thickness, while Vita Enamic had the lowest radiopacity value for 2-mm-thick and 4-mm-thick samples. The materials with the highest radiopacity values after the amalgam were zinc phosphate cements. Conclusion: Significant differences were observed in the radiopacities of restorative materials with different thicknesses. Radiopacity was affected by both the material type and thickness.
PURPOSE. This study was performed to evaluate shear bond strength (SBS) between three dual-cured resin cements and silica coated zirconia, before and after thermocycling treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty specimens were cut in $15{\times}2.75mm$ discs using zirconia. After air blasting of $50{\mu}m$ alumina, samples were prepared by tribochemical silica coating with $Rocatec^{TM}$ plus. The specimens were divided into three groups according to the dual-cure resin cement used: (1) Calibra silane+$Calibra^{(R)}$, (2) Monobond S+$Multilink^{(R)}$ N and (3) ESPN sil+$RelyX^{TM}$ Unicem Clicker. After the resin cement was bonded to the zirconia using a Teflon mold, photopolymerization was carried out. Only 10 specimens in each group were thermocycled 6,000 times. Depending on thermocycling treatment, each group was divided into two subgroups (n=10) and SBS was measured by applying force at the speed of 1 mm/min using a universal testing machine. To find out the differences in SBS according to the types of cements and thermocycling using the SPSS, two-way ANOVA was conducted and post-hoc analysis was performed by Turkey's test. RESULTS. In non-thermal aged groups, SBS of Multilink group (M1) was higher than that of Calibra (C1) and Unicem (U1) group (P<.05). Moreover, even after thermocycling treatment, SBS of Multilink group (M2) was higher than the other groups (C2 and U2). All three cements showed lower SBS after the thermocycling than before the treatments. But Multilink and Unicem had a significant difference (P<.05). CONCLUSION. In this experiment, Multilink showed the highest SBS before and after thermocycling. Also, bond strengths of all three cements decreased after thermocycling.

Statement of problem: The color change of final restoration resulting from resin cement is variable since the amount of the tooth is prepared is minimum. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the color accuracy of try-in paste and their corresponding resin cements and the color stability of restoration intermediated resin cement according to two shades of three products(Rely-X. Variolink II. Choice). Material and method: Color was measured for porcelain disk sample without try-in paste, and porcelain disk sample intermediated by try-in paste and resin cement, then color differences were calculated. Results : 1. Color difference(${\Delta}E^*$) between try-in paste and resin cement showed the lowest value at Variolink II and increased in the order Choice and Rely-X statistically significant, and $?E^*$ of three resin cements was greater in A3 then A1. 2. The values of ${\Delta}L^*$ and ${\Delta}a^*$ between try-in paste and resin cement was in the increasing order of Variolink II, Choice and Rely-X. The ${\Delta}b^*$ value was increased in this order Choice, Rely-X and Variolink II in A1 on the other hand Variolink II, Rely-X and Choice in A3. 3. Color difference(${\Delta}E^*$) before and after resin cement showed the lowest value at Variolink II and increased in the order Rely-X and Choice. Conclusion : Above result revealed that the colors of try-in paste and resin cement were more or less accurate in the range of 0.35-1.95 of color difference which was unnoticeable with human eye, and Variolink II was superior to the other resin cements in color accuracy.
The tensile bond strength to dentin was measured for three glass-ionomer cement and composite resin combinations: two light-curing glass-ionomer cements(Vitrebond and XR - Ionomer) and one traditional glass - ionomer cement(Ketac - Bond), two adhesive systems(Scotchbond, and XR - Bonding System), and a corresponding composite resin. The bond strength of this "sandwich" was also compared with that of the same cements used in bulk. Vitredbond showed a significantly higher bond strength in bulk than did the other two cements. Of the sandwiches, the XR - Iomomer and XR - Bond combination showed a bond strength significantly higher than that of the Vitrebond and Scotchbond or Ketac- bond and Scotchbond combination. The fracture of the bond was mainly adhesive for Vitrebond, cohesive for XR - Ionomer when used in bulk and adhesive - cohesive when used in a sandwich, and cohesive for Ketac-Bond.

PURPOSE. The aim of this Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic study was to measure the degree of conversion (DC) of dual-cured resin cements light-irradiated through zirconia ceramic disks with different thicknesses using various light-curing methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia ceramic disks (KT12) with three different thicknesses (1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mm) were prepared. The light transmittance of the disks was measured using ultraviolet visible near-infrared spectroscopy. Four different light-curing protocols were used by combining two curing light modes (Elipar TriLight (standard mode) and bluephase G2 (high power mode)) with light-exposure times of 40 and 120 seconds. The DCs of the two dual-cured resin cements (Duo-Link and Panavia F2.0) light-irradiated through the disks was analyzed at three time intervals (3, 7, and 10 minutes) by FTIR spectroscopy. The data was analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (${\alpha}$=.05).Two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test were used to analyze the 10 minute DC results. RESULTS. The 1.0 mm thick disk exhibited low light transmittance (<25%), and the transmittance decreased considerably with increasing disk thickness. All groups exhibited significantly higher 10 minute DC values than the 3 or 7 minute values (P<.05), but some exceptions were observed in Duo-Link. Two-way ANOVA revealed that the influence of the zirconia disk thickness on the 10 minute DC was dependent on the light-curing methods (P<.001). This finding was still valid even at 4.0 mm thickness, where substantial light attenuation took place. CONCLUSION. The curing of the dual-cured resin cements was affected significantly by the light-curing technique, even though the additional chemical polymerization mechanism worked effectively.
This study was designed to evaluate the influences of evaporation of liquid of dental cements by drying during long term using. Zinc phosphate cement, polycarboxylate cement, and glass ionomer cement were used, and evaluated the properties as follows; consistency, setting time, film thickness, solubility, and compressive strength according to the ADA specification. The specimens of control group were made by mixing the newly opened liquid using the powder-liquid ratio recommended by the manufacturer, and the specimens of ES groups were made by mixing the 10% evaporated liquid by drying with the powder-liquid ratio recommeded by the manufacturer, and the specimens of EM group were made by mixing the 10% evaporated liquid with the powder-liquid ratio modified for standard consistency. The following conclusions were drawn ; 1. The viscosity of mixture of all kinds of cements were increased by the evaporation of liquid, especially the viscosity of glass ionomer cement were influenced significantly. 2. The amount of liquid should be increased to get a standard consistency at the using of evaporated liquid of cement, the most significant increase of liquid amount was required on Ketac-Cem. 3. The setting times were increased at both cases of mixing of evaporated liquid with powder - liquid ratio recommended by manufacturer or modifided through consistency test. 4. At an experimental group of mixing of the evaporated liquid with powder-liquid ratio recommended by manufacturer, solubility was decreased and film thickness was increased. 5. By the result of evaporation of cement liquid, the compressive strength of polycarboxylate cement was increased slightly and it of glass ionomer cement was increased, however, by the increase of amount of liquid to be possible to manipulate the compressive strength were decreased.
Objectives: Hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) surface treatment of fiber posts has been reported to increase bond strength of fiber posts to resin cements. However, residual oxygen radicals might jeopardize the bonding procedure. This study examined the effect of three antioxidant agents on the bond strength of fiber posts to conventional and self-adhesive resin cements. Materials and Methods: Post spaces were prepared in forty human maxillary second premolars. Posts were divided into five groups of 8 each: G1 (control), no pre-treatment; G2, 10% $H_2O_2$ pre-treatment; G3, G4 and G5. After $H_2O_2$ application, Hesperidin (HES), Sodium Ascorbate (SA) or Rosmarinic acid (RA) was applied on each group respectively. In each group four posts were cemented with Duo-Link conventional resin cement and the others with self-adhesive BisCem cement. Push-out test was performed and data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA and tukey's post-hoc test (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: There was a statistically significant interaction between the cement type and post surface treatment on push-out bond strength of fiber posts (p < 0.001, F = 16). Also it was shown that different posts' surface treatments significantly affect the push-out bond strength of fiber posts (p = 0.001). $H_2O_2$ treated posts (G2) and control posts (G1) cemented with Duo-link showed the highest ($15.96{\pm}5.07MPa$) and lowest bond strengths ($6.79{\pm}3.94$) respectively. Conclusions: It was concluded that $H_2O_2$ surface treatment might enhance the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional resin cements. The effect of antioxidants as post's surface treatment agents depends on the characteristics of resin cements used for bonding procedure.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the film thicknesses of several resin cements as a function of time after mixing and to examine the effect of working time on the film thicknesses. Materials and methods: The film thickness (${\mu}m$) of 4 resin cements (n=10), 1 composite resin (Panavia F 2.0), 3 self-adhesive resin (Clearfil SA luting, Zirconite, RelyX U200) cements was measured at 20-second intervals after mixing of the cements up to 200 seconds under a load of 50 N. Linear regression was fitted to verify the effect of working time on the film thickness of each cement. Data were compared to the working time recommended by manufacturers using Wilcoxon test ($\alpha$=.05). Results: All of the materials showed a positive linear correlation between the film thickness and working time. There was no statistically significant difference between the working time based on our results and the values recommended by the manufacturers even though there was a discrepancy between those two values. Conclusion: The film thickness of resin cements could increase with the increase of working time. Working time to meet the ISO standard of $50-{\mu}m$ maximum film thickness could be different from the manufacturer's recommended value.

All-ceramic restorations have had a more limited life expectancy than metal ceramic restorations because of their low strength. Their relatively lower strength and resistance to fracture have restricted the use of all-ceramic crowns to anterior applications where occlusal loads are lower. But there has been increasing interest in all-ceramic restorations because patients are primarily concerned with improved esthetics. Many efforts have been made to in prove the mechanical properties of dental ceramics. This study was designed to elucidate the influence of the luting agent on the strength of the Empress 2 crown (staining technique) cemented on human teeth. Seventy extracted human permanent molar teeth were chosen. Teeth were prepared for Empress 2 crowns with milling machine on a surveyor. A dental bur was placed in the mandrel that was positioned so that the long axis of the bur was perpendicular to the surveyor base. Dimensions of the Empress 2 crown preparation were $6^{\circ}$ taper on each side, $1.5{\pm}0.1mm$ shoulder margin, and 4mm crown height. The luting cements used in this study were as follow: 1. Uncemented 2. Zinc phosphate cements (Confi-Dental) 3. Conventional glass ionomer cement : Fuji 1 (GC) 4. Resin-modified glass ionomer cements : Fuji plus (GC) 5. Adhesive cements : Panavia F (Kuralay), Variolink II (Vivadent), Choice (Bisco). Fracture test using Instron. The crowns were loaded in compressive force to evaluate the effect of these cements on the breaking strength of these all-ceramic crowns. A steel ball with a diameter of 4mm was placed on the occlusal surface and load was applied to the steel ball by a cylindrical bolt with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm per minute until fracture occurred. The fractured surface was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopic Image (SEM) to discover the correlation between fracture strength and bonding capacity. Within the limitation of this in vitro study design, the results were as follows : 1. fomentations significantly increased the fracture resistance of Empress ceramic crowns compared to control. Uncemented (206.9 N): ZPC (812.9 N): Fuji 1 (879.5 N): Fuji Plus (937.7 N): Choice (1105.4 N): Variolink II (1221.1 N): Panavia F (1445.2 N). 2. Resin luting agent, treated by a silane bond enhancing agents, yielded a significant increase in fracture resistance. In some of the Panavia F group, a fracture extended into dentin. 3. According to SEM images of fractured Empress crowns, the stronger the bond at both interfaces(crown and die), the more fracture strength was acquired.
