Mutans streptococci is the major causative factor in dental caries. Especially, orthodontic patients with fixed appliance are a risk group for dental caries. Because fixed appliances attached on teeth may change the environment of dental plaque, the enamel decalcification or dental caries around the bracket and band is a major side effect of orthodontic treatmet. The aim of this study was to search plant extracts that have antimicrobial effect on mutans streptococci. Seed-extract of Casia torn were prepared with ethanol and CHMC-2032, the leaf-extracts from Camellia sinensis extract, was obtained extract, 2 type strains and 20 clinical isolates of mutans streptococci isolated from the interface between orthodontic brackets and tooth surfaces in the orthodontic patients were used in this study. The minimal inhibitory concentration of CHMC-2032 was 5mg/ml on the S. mutans KCTC 3065, S. sobrinus KCTC 3088, and 8 clinical isolates of S. sobrinus. However, there was no antibacterial effect of seed-extract of C. tora on mutans streptococci. These data suggest that green tea nay be more effective than the tea Prepared from C tora In the prevention of enamel decalcification or dental caries around brackets.
Daejeon school-based toothbrushing program using toothbrushing room started at 2007. Ministry of Health and Welfare started national toothbrushing room program without pilot project at 2011. The aim of this study was to provide the basic data to assess of the effect of this program. 59 experimental subjects and 60 control subject were selected after written consent. Oral Examination was done by 1 dentist using WHO standard and Survey of Child Oral Health-Related Quality of Life(COHIP), oral health knowledge and oral health behavior were done using self-registration form. We analyzed the result after adjusting economic status and subjective for the difference between experimental and control groups using SPSS 19.0. The experimental group had lower plaque index, better COHIP and more oral health knowledge significantly(p<0.05). But, The significance was not found in dental caries index and oral health behavior. We suggested the oral health education program and other dental caries prevention program including sealants were needed to prevent dental caries, although school-based toothbrushing program could improve COHIP.
Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the pro-con of re-implementation by administrative areas and the difference in perception of community water fluoridation in implemented and non-implemented areas after the community water fluoridation in Korea was suspended. Through this, we intend to provide basic data that can help find ways to increase the support and interest of local residents. Methods: The 601 questionnaires collected through the survey and statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS Statistics 28.0. Results: As a result of analyzing the perception of the community water fluoridation according to the understanding of fluorine, the proportion of people who were not recognized by both fluorine and community water fluoridation was the highest (p<0.05). As a result of the analysis of the pro-con of re-implementation of community water fluoridation, the approval was high. Among those who responded in favor, the place of re-implementation showed that 'implementation nationwide' was high. As for the reason for favor, it was found that it was possible to prevent dental caries disease. The reason for the objection was the lack of knowledge about fluoride. Conclusion: The results of the survey for the pro-con of the re-implementation of community water fluoridation showed a higher degree of 'agree' and showed that people in the area where community water fluoridation was not implemented showed higher interest in oral health prevention and management. Through this, not only oral education, but also correct information on the implementation method of community water fluoridation, the benefits of community water fluoridation, and the facts that were misunderstood in the past, as well as oral education, can be provided to raise interest in community water fluoridation. It is thought that the expected effect of the re-implementation of community water fluoridation can be obtained if such activities are carried out.
Objectives: The main objectives of this study were to verify the antibacterial activity of two essential oils, lavender and peppermint, against dental caries and to review their synergistic effect when used in combination. Our results provide basic data for the evaluation of the use of these two substances towards the prevention and cure of dental caries. Methods: The sample solutions of lavender and peppermint oils were prepared in three different concentrations (30%, 50%, and 70% (v/v)) by diluting them with third-distilled water and Tween 20. Streptococcus mutans was selected as the bacterial species for testing. The disk diffusion method was used to measure the antibacterial activity of the sample solutions. For generating growth curves and measuring the number of clusters of the bacterial, the liquid medium-dilution method was used; the absorbance of the medium was measured at 600 nm after 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours. Results: When the antibacterial activity of the oils was tested via the disk diffusion method, the activity improved with increasing concentrations of all the sample solutions of peppermint, lavender, and the blend, but there was no significant difference between them with respect to the type of oil. In the growth curves of S. mutans, growth inhibition was observed after 12 hours. The inhibitory effect of 30% lavender oil on growth was 64.9% and 80.1% after 12 and 24 hours of treatment, respectively whereas that of peppermint oil was 71.3% and 80.1% after 12 and 24 hours of treatment, respectively. The inhibitory effect of the blended oil was 71.9% and 81.0% after 12 and 24 hours of treatment, respectively. Conclusions: Further research is still required in order to determine the efficacy of lavender and peppermint oils, as well as other essential oils, for wider use in preventing dental caries.
The purpose of this study was to collect basic data for the development of oral health education program of parents and to encourage their actual interest and participation in school oral health program. The authors surveyed parents' awareness and behaviors about the oral health of their children. The subjects in this study were 193 parents of elementary school children in Seoul. The collected data were analyzed, the obtained results were as follows: 1. Thirty-five percent of the parents investigated paid a regular visit to a dental clinic. The most common tooth brushing time among them was after dinner, the second was after breakfast, and this was followed by before bedtime and before breakfast 2. Ninety-four percent of the parents responded that prevention is necessary, 92.2% had a plan to visit a dental clinic to prevent dental caries, and 60.1% experienced receiving pit and fissure sealants. Ninety-seven percent responded that they did check their children's dental caries. 54.9% checked their children's oral status after tooth brushing. The parents who visit a dental clinic on a regular basis were more likely to check their children's teeth after tooth brushing than those who don't(P<0.05). 3. Eighty eight percent of respondents wanted to keep the fluoride mouth rinse program. 4. It is recommended that an oral health education program be developed for parents to visit dental clinics on a regular basis, to educate as to the right tooth brushing time, and to check out their children's oral status after tooth brushing.
Korean society is experiencing a very rapid change in population aging. Oral diseases, including dental caries and periodontal disease, are usually cumulative and make oral health worse with age. Preventing tooth loss through the prevention and treatment of caries and periodontal diseases are essential for retaining oral function later in life. This study aimed to identify the trend in oral health status among elderlies over 65 years old, using major oral health indicators of Health Plan 2020. The fifth, sixth, and seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V, VI, VII) were used in the present study to estimate the number of remaining natural teeth, the rate of 20 or more natural teeth, the rate of chewing difficulty, and the rate of oral health check-up of elderly. The number of remaining natural teeth increased from 15.6 in 2010 to 17.1 in 2015, and the rate of 20 or more natural teeth also increased from 45.8% in 2010 to 53.7% in 2015. The rate of chewing difficulty was similar but declined a little from 44.3% in 2010 to 42.9% in 2017. Finally, the rate of oral health check-ups of the elderly increased significantly from 12.2% in 2010 to 21.1% in 2017.
Objectives : This study was performed analysis of Halitosis components following by subjective cognition of halitosis and Oral State in order to provide basic data for halitosis prevention and establish a device to efficiently eliminate halitosis and analyze the factors that affect the halitosis. Methods : 80 adults were participated who visited at the Dental Clinic in Kyoung-gi do, on the period of the March to September in 2010. The obtained results, through the oral examination, halitosis check and interview, Individually, were as followings. Results : According to the ammonia level was a high relationship between sex, CPI, Tongue plaque, DMFT index which were statistically significant (p<0.05). Total oral gas level was a relationship between VAS, tongue plaque, DMFT index(p<0.05). The Correlation coefficient between the Hydrogen sulfide level and Methyl mercaptan was estimated as r=0.534(p<0.01). As for the multiple regression analysis result, there have been selected dimethyl sulfide and Tongue plaque, Gingival index as factors affecting Bridge, Methyl mercaptan level is as factors affecting Hydrogen sulfide level. Conclusions : There was relationship between the periodontal disease and Ammonia gas component, hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, methyl mercaptan. Which were statistically significant total oral gas level and oral variables. Such dental caries as the prevention or early treatment of periodontal disease.
This study was executed to find the effects of dietary control and oral health care on dental caries and oral problems in elementary school students, including the effects of nutritional and oral health education on the prevention of dental caries. 1. The oral health study found that 88.9% of students brushed their teeth everyday, 63.7% 2 times a day, and 50.4% in the morning and at night. 2. According to the general characteristics whether or not, the female students had more dental caries than the males, and 29.1% of the students that had dental caries ate snacke 1 or 2 times a day. 3. After the nutritional education, more students brushed their teeth in the after meal 4. According to gender, grade and nutritional education for oral health care, male students and higher grade students were more aware that “brushing teeth after meals is better than before”. The male and higher grade students, after the nutritional education, were more aware that “Bones and teeth are made from calcium”, and “Fluorine prevents teeth from dental caries” and the differences between the genders were statistically significant in relation to both these facts (p〈0.05) and before and after education (p〈0.01). The male and higher grade students, and those nutritionally educated were more conscious that “vegetables and fruits are good for teeth”, with the differences before and after the nutritional education were statistically significant (p〈0.05). The male and higher grade students were well aware that “Foods that have sugar cause dental caries”, and significant differences were shown between grades (p〈0.05). The male and higher grade students, after the nutritional education and were well aware that “Milk is good for teeth”, with a significant gender difference (p〈0.05). The female and higher grade students, and those after nutritional education were well aware that “Dental caries can not be perfectly cured once it had already occurred”. after nutrition, but not much differences.

Objectives: This study was conducted to reveal the biological basis of dental plaque and preschool children's dental health status through repetitive and continuous toothbrushing instruction to preschool children, using quantitative criteria, and to emphasize the importance of the role of an oral health manager for the prevention of dental caries. Methods: After IRB approval, toothbrushing instruction and oral microbial specimen collection were conducted with children of preschool age at the Daycare Center attached to D. University, Busan. Specimens from 27 children were characterized by analysis with real-time multi-chain enzymatic polymerization reaction technique at an agency specializing in genetic analysis. Results: In a survey of the children's dental health behaviors, 48.1% responded that the toothbrushing time is 91 to 150 seconds; 66.7% responded that the frequency of toothbrushing is more than three times per day; 81.5% stated that they performed tongue brushing; and 81.5% brushed their teeth. Regarding levels of dental cariogenic bacteria, after children received continuous toothbrushing instruction, there were reductions in both Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. Regarding toothbrushing time, the time increased in relation to the presence of instruction. Regarding Quigley Hein Index, the index decreased in the early and middle periods upon addition of instruction, then increased in the middle and later periods. Conclusions: Through persistent and repetitive toothbrushing instruction, healthy behavior can be positively established in children of preschool age; it is necessary to prepare institutional measures so opportunities for dental health education can be consistently provided and maintained. In the future, it will be necessary to conduct a follow-up study to verify the factors affecting toothbrushing time and volume of oral pathogens.
Objectives : The study examined mothers' oral health knowledge and oral health management behavior to their children that affect directly children's oral health to prepare basic aiming at children. Methods : Therefore, a survey of 235 mothers in 10 kindergartens located in Seoul was conducted by self-administered questionnaires. Results : As to mothers' oral health knowledge, the correct-answer rate for questions about tooth-decay was highest, and the level of 'middle (5-7 points)' was the most common with 50.0%. Regarding oral health knowledge according to mothers' general characteristics, the higher academic background and family's monthly earnings were, the higher oral health knowledge was. It showed a statistically significant difference(p<.01). In terms of mothers' oral health management behavior to their children, 79.1% of mothers who had the visiting experience in the dentist's for caries prevention was highest. As to the number of brushing, the twice was highest with 51.2%, and regarding brushing time 2min was highest52.6%. Also, the rate of using the fluoride toothpaste was 68.4%, and the rate of mothers who helped their children's brushing was 83.3%. As to the oral health management behavior to their children by mothers' oral health knowledge, mothers with higher oral health knowledge used the fluoride toothpaste showing that there was a significant difference(p<.01). Also, mothers with higher oral health knowledge helped more children's brushing, so that there was a significant difference(p<.05). Regarding the oral health management behavior to their children according to mothers' visiting experience in the dentist's, mothers who visited the dentist's during the recent one year had higher visiting experience of dentist's for children's caries prevention(p<.01) and longer time of brushing by 3min(p<.05), and helped their children's brushing a lot. The findings showed a significant difference(p<.001). Conclusions : As the results above, as mothers' oral health knowledge and oral health management behaviors to their children affect closely children's oral health, more systematic, specific and active oral health programs should be provided to mothers.
