The increase in the edentulous jaw which occurs in the aged population has led to personal dental health concerns. In the case of dental implant surgery, the duration of a patient's recovery depends on the surgical plan and their physicical ability. A device may be required to assist a physician in controlling vibration reduction of free-hand drilling and prescribing a good treatment plan that is suitable for the patient's condition. In this work, an artificial tooth-root implant assistant manipulator was studied. The structure and the vibration analysis of the dynamic restraint manipulator that is for drilling the alveolar bone in the mandible bone were performed, and the structural stability was analyzed. Further, a virtual prototype of an artificial tooth-root implant assisted manipulator was fabricated and tested. Hence, the state of the Remote Center of Motion (RCM) point and the driving state of the manipulator were confirmed. Furthermore, the drilling experiments were performed by using materials similar to a human jawbone in order to evaluate the performance of the drilling process that is operated using the assistant manipulator.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for elucidating the clinical experiences of nursing assistants working at dental clinics and for establishing the bases necessary for building a safe working environment for the staff at dental clinics. Methods: From March 28 to August 20, 2022, the study conducted in-depth interviews with nursing assistants working with dental hygienists in dental clinics. The collected data were analyzed using the phenomenological method. Results: The study analyzed the meanings associated with the dental clinical assistance work experiences of nursing assistants in dental clinics. A total of 98 semantic words and 9 sub-categories were extracted, which were ultimately categorized into 4 central meanings: 'imperfect reality', 'work without boundaries', 'putting oneself in someone else's shoes', and 'symbiosis'. Conclusions: The nursing assistants were exposed to an environment where they needed to perform delegated treatment procedures even when they lacked dental work competency. They recognized their gaps in learning and the necessity for designated roles as clinical assistants. Thus, it is necessary to review the allocation and expansion of the work roles of dental practitioners based on the practical and rational realities in dental practice.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting robot utilization in the education of pre-dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 238 dental hygiene students studying in the Daejeon, Chungcheong, and Jeolla provinces during the period March 1-31, 2017. Results: Future oral health education media had high selection of 'movies,' 'video,' '3D printer,' 'robot,' and 'drone' In general education and oral health education, robots were appropriate as educators, assistant teachers, and media. This group had high levels of interest, experience, attitude, and learning scope of robots. Robot utilization education showed a significant positive correlation with the 'interest,' 'experience,' 'attitude,' and 'learning' subfactors (p<0.01). Factors influencing robot utilization education were the relationships among actual experience of robot, learning of robot production, social influence of robot, emotional exchange with robot, and the predictive power was 25.5% (p<0.05). Conclusions: Oral health education curricula using robots should be developed considering the emotional exchange and social influence between educator and learner.
Objectives: This study aims to establish the concept of "dental assistance" within the dental field and to identify the scope of dental assistance, which can be utilized in order to distinguish the scope of work between jobs. Methods: The literature on dental hygienist work and dental assistance was reviewed, and the laws and precedents related to dental assistance were examined. Results: The criteria for judging the legitimacy of dental assistance included the following: whether the performance was conducted under the guidance and supervision of a doctor; whether there was a possibility of an aftereffect or side effects of the procedure; whether education was conducted within the curriculum; and whether it was evaluated in the national licensing examination. In addition, the work of the assistant in dental surgery and treatment is judged comprehensively by considering the type of dental surgery and treatment, invasive degree, necessity of expertise, and work proficiency of the dental hygienist. Therefore, it is suggested that dental hygienists may be of assistance for dental treatment/surgery because they meet the requirements of dental professionals, such as dental hygiene curriculum, national licensing examination, duties in the field of dentistry, and work proficiency. Conclusions: Dental assistance (including assistance in dental surgery) for dental treatment, dental/medical history taking, taking vital signs, and blood glucose monitoring should be permitted within the realm of dental hygienist work. Therefore, the actual expertise of dental hygienists should be reflected legally and the work of dental hygienists should be realized.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate third and forth year dental students' perception towards dental hygienists as professionals. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 602 dental college students in Korea after receiving the informed consent. Except incomplete answers, 217 data were analyzed. The questionnaire consisted of three questions of the general perception towards dental hygienists, four questions of the cooperation relationship to the dental hygienists, four questions of oral health education, five questions of preventive dental health care, five questions of dental treatment cooperation, and five questions of dental health care management. The data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0(SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: Most of the dental college students viewed the dental hygienists as professionals. However, they did not exactly know the professional job of dental hygienists within the current national medical services system and they often viewed the dental hygienists as a medical assistant. The dental college students thought that the key role of the dental hygienists is the dental assisting. Only a small fraction of the participants recognized oral health promotion, preventive cares, and hospital management as professional roles of dental hygienists. Conclusions : Dental college students' perception towards dental hygienists as professionals needs to be improved. Understanding the job description of dental hygienists clearly is a crucial part of dental students' learning process and future practice.
The purpose of this exploratory study was to assess work performance of dental hygienists and identify factors influencing their work performance. A questionnaire was administered to 87 dental hygienists working dental clinics based in Ulsan during the period from June 2005 through July 2005. A total of 77 questionnaires were collected and used for analysis. SPSS 11.5 program was employed for statistical analysis. All data were expressed in terms of numbers, percentage and mean score. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. There was a significantly positive correlation between age and the level of work performance in the Scientific competency group and Esthetical competency group. 2. Unmarried dental hygienists demonstrated better work performance than married dental hygienists in Scientific, Esthetical and Personal competency groups, showing a statistically significant difference. 3. By education level, those with junior college degree had better work performance than those who are attending or graduated from college in the four groups. By workplace, those who were working at non-general hospitals demonstrated a higher level of performance in the three groups except the Ethical group, but the difference was not statistically significant. 4. A significantly positive relationship was observed between monthly pay and work performance in the Scientific, Personal and Esthetical competency groups. 5. A positive relationship was observed between work experience and performance in the Scientific competency group. But there was no difference between work experience and performance in the other three groups. 6. By working environment, those who were working with assistant nurses showed a higher level of performance than those working without assistant nurses in the Scientific competency group, and the difference was statistically significant.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate nail hygiene behaviors and to identify the relationship between hand hygiene beliefs and nail hygiene behaviors among dental hygienists, dental's aide and dental coordinator in South Korea. Methods: The subjects were 291 dental workers including dental hygienists, dental assistant and dental coordinator working full-time at dental clinics, dental hospitals, general dental hospitals and dental university hospitals in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do. The questionnaire consisted of a total 35 items, including 4 items on general characteristics, 25 items on hand hygiene, 2 items on "nail art" experience, and 4 items on nail hygiene behaviors. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, chi-square test, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis, where ${\alpha}<0.05$ was considered statistically significant. Results: The scores of behavioral beliefs, normative beliefs, control beliefs and nail hygiene behaviors were $5.15{\pm}0.58$, $5.26{\pm}0.81$, $3.69{\pm}0.96$ and $5.03{\pm}0.98$, respectively. Statistically significant relationships were detected in terms of participants' clinical experiences with respect to behavioral and normative beliefs (p<0.05 for all three belief categories). Participants working in general dental hospitals and dental university hospitals demonstrated the highest scores for behavioral, normative and control beliefs (p<0.05). Participants working in dental clinics reported the highest "nail art" experience rates in the last two years (45.5%) and at the time of the survey (15.7%; p<0.05). Nail hygiene behaviors were more likely to be observed in individuals with stronger behavioral and stronger normative beliefs (p<0.05). Conclusions: More specific infection control guidelines for "nail art" among dental workers should be established and promoted, so that both patients and dental workers can interact in a safe environment.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the status and views on the dental team composition and works, the experience of a dental manpower shortage and opinions on the solution. The subjects were 313 dentists and dental hygienists. The mobile questionnaires were conducted on the status of dental team composition and works, the experience of a dental manpower shortage and opinions on the solution. There was no big difference between the current dental team composition and ideal composition ratio, and dentists answered that it would be more ideal to reduce dental hygiene and increase nurse assistant when the working dentist was 3~5. 85.6% of the dentists and 56.4% of the dental hygienists had difficulty in employing the dental auxiliary personnel. The difficulty level was 8 out of 10 points among dentists and 5.7 points among dental hygienists. 91.1% of the dentists and 95.5% of the dental hygienists agreed on the necessity of expanding the dental hygienist's work. The dental works were temporary crown making and setting, surgical operation assistance, and overall dental assistance. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to continuously make efforts to communicate with the dental personnel in Korea to solve a lot of problems such as the job assignment, the dental personnel policy and system, and the work environment.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of company employees. The importance of the selection factors of dental clinics by demographic characteristics. Methods : The subjects of this study was 218 employees. In this study, structured were used. Results : As for perception of the importance of traffic convenience by general characteristics, the company employees who were male, who were married, who had children, who continued to work for a longer period and who were better paid placed more significance on traffic convenience among the selection factors of dental institutions, and the gaps between them and their counterparts were significant. Regarding perception of the importance of the physical environments of dental institutions by general characteristics, those who were in their 20s and in their 50s and up, who were less educated, who worked for a smaller period and who were less paid gave more weight on the importance of physical environments, and the gaps between them and their counterparts were significant. As to perception of the importance of the image of dental institutions by general characteristics, monthly pay made a significant difference to that. Concerning the external qualifications of dental personnels, they took a significantly different view according to their age and monthly pay. In relation to perception of the importance of dental service by general characteristics, the women attached more importance to dental service than the men, and the intergroup gap was significant. In regard to perception of the importance of the basic components of dental institutions by general characteristics, those who were in their 40s and up, who had children, who were better paid and who were assistant directors were significantly different from their counterparts in their opinions on the importance of the basic components of dental institutions. Conclusions : The findings of the study suggest that dental institutions should make efforts to provide patients with the best medical service to gain their confidence.
