  • The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Ti alloys for medical implants have been investigated. Ti, Ti-15Sn-4Nb and Ti-15Sn-4Nb-2Zr alloys were melted in arc furnace and the corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by anodic polarization test. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti alloys were analysed by optical microscope, hardness and tensile tester. The tensile strength of the pure-Ti improved by addition of Sn and Nb and Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy showed better Rockwell hardness compared with pure Ti. However, there was no significant difference in corrosion resistance between thoseTi-alloys made of Pure-Ti and Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy. The passive films on the Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy in air atmosphere consisted of $TiO_2$, SnO and NbO as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)

  • After clinical adjustment of dental casting restoration, re-polishing procedure is recommanded because the smooth gold sureface is lost. But there is the possibility to get more loose contact than that intended by loss of gold alloy according to the kinds of polishing materials and polishing time. Therefore in this study I polished type II gold alloy with 390gm force, 20,000rpm speed, and 8 kinds of gold alloy polishing materials, fabricated by 4 companies and then measured the amount of loss of gold alloy with Surfcorder SEF-30D and observed alloy surfaces polished by 3 brown rubber points with SEM. The amount of loss of gold alloys polished with 8 kinds of polishing materials and the degree of smoothness of gold alloys according to polishing time and polishing materials were compared. The following results were obtained : 1. When the amount of loss of gold alloys polished with 3 kinds of brown rubber point was compared, Alphalex brown point had the most amount of alloy loss, followed in decreasing order by Shofu brown point and Eveflex brown point. There was statistically significant difference in the amount of alloy loss according to polishing materials. 2. When the amount of loss of gold alloys polished with 5 kinds of green rubber point was compared, Shofu green point had the most amount of alloy loss, followed in decreasing order by Alphaflex green point, Dedeco green clasp polisher, and Eveflex green point. There was statistically significant difference in the amount of alloy loss according to polishing materials except Alphaflex green point and Dedeco green clasp polisher. 3. When the amount of loss of gold alloys polished with all kinds of rubber point was compared, there was no significant difference in Eveflex brown point, Alphaflex green point, and Dedeco green clasp polisher. 4. When average amount of alloy loss per 1 revolution by polishing materials was compared, Alphalex brown point had the greatest value as $0.329{\mu}m$ and Shofu supergreen point had the lowest value as $0.022{\mu}m$. 5. When the degree of sureface smoothness of gold alloy polished with 3 kinds of brown rubber point was compared, In Alphalex brown point surface roughness was completely lost after 20 seconds polishing time, in Shofu brown point 30 seconds, in Eveflex brown point 40 seconds. But in every gold alloys fine scratch formed by rubber points was observed. Based on the results of this study, as rubber polishing materials used in polishing of dental casting restoration after clinical adjustment influenced on the tightness of occlusal or proximal contact, we should make dental casting restoration with minimum error through careful laboratory procedure and form very smooth surface of restoration with tripoli and rouge after use of silicone polishing materials.

  • This Experimental study was performed to study the effect of the heat soaking and the diameter of pattern on the casting ability of three nonprecious alloys manufactured for porcelain-metal restorations, with respect to their ability to reproduce test pieces by casting over a selected range of uniform diameters. Samples of total 60 were constructed and divided into 6 groups according to the two variables, the diameter and the heat soaking. The completed cast samples were examined visually and measured with a caliper calibrated to 0.05mm. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Length cast was significantly related to the diameter to be cast, especially in the case of the marrowest diameter of 230m. 2. Length cast not significantly related to the heat soaking. 3. The completeness of casting was significantly related to the diameter to be cast, particularly in the case of the narrowest diameter of 230m. 4. The completeness of casting was not significantly related to the heat soaking. 5. All of the three nonprecious alloys used for this experiment were significantly different from an ideal alloy in the completeness of casting.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two different metal conditioners for non-precious metal alloys for the bonding of porcelain to a cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disk-shaped specimens ($2.5{\times}10.0mm$) were cast with Co-Cr alloy and used as adherend materials. The bonding surfaces were polished with a 600-grid silicon carbide paper and airborne-particle abraded using $110{\mu}m$ alumina particles. Bonding specimens were fabricated by applying and firing either of the metal conditioners on the airborne-particle abraded surface, followed by firing porcelain into 5 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height. Specimens without metal conditioner were also fabricated. Shear bond strength for each group (n=8) were measured and compared (${\alpha}=.05$). Sectional view of bonding interface was observed by SEM. EDS analysis was performed to determine the chemical elements of metal conditioners and to determine the failure modes after shear test. RESULTS. There were significant differences among three groups, and two metal conditioner-applied groups showed significantly higher values compared to the non-metal conditioner group. The SEM observation of the sectional view at bonding interface revealed loose contact at porcelain-alloy surface for non-metal conditioner group, however, close contact at both alloy-metal conditioner and metal conditioner-porcelain interfaces for both metal conditioner-applied groups. All the specimens showed mixed failures. EDS analysis showed that one metal conditioner was Si-based material, and another was Ti-based material. Si-based metal conditioner showed higher bond strengths compared to the Ti-based metal conditioner, but exhibited more porous failure surface failure. CONCLUSION. Based on the results of this study, it can be stated that the application of metal conditioner is recommended for the bonding of porcelain to cobalt-chromium alloys.

  • A number of surface modification techniques using immobilization of biofunctional molecules of Titanium (Ti) for dental implants as well as surface properties of Ti and Ti alloys have been developed. The method using passive surface oxide film on titanium takes advantage of the fact that the surface film on Ti consists mainly of amorphous or low-crystalline and nonstoichiometric $TiO_2$. In another method, the reconstruction of passive films, calcium phosphate naturally forms on Ti and its alloys, which is characteristic of Ti. A third method uses the surface active hydroxyl group. The oxide surface immediately reacts with water molecules and hydroxyl groups are formed. The hydroxyl groups dissociate in aqueous solutions and show acidic and basic properties. Several additional methods are also possible, including surface modification techniques, immobilization of poly(ethylene glycol), and immobilization of biomolecules such as bone morphogenetic protein, peptide, collagen, hydrogel, and gelatin.

  • For biomedical applications, Ti-X%Zr-Y%Nb-0.2%Pd(X:10$\sim$20, Y:2$\sim$8) alloys not containing harmful Al and V were newly designed, and the effect of alloy composition and heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. From the results, it was shown that the mechanical properties were enhanced with the addition of Zr or Nb. The effect of heat treating on room temperature strength was investigated by aging treatment after solution treatment. The mechanical properties of Ti-20%Zr-4%Nb-0.2%Pd alloy aged at 400$^{\circ}C$ for 10hrs was found to be superior to those of the pure Ti and Ti-6%Al-4%V ELI alloy.
