Background: Dental hygienists undergo 3 or 4 years of college education, and dental hygienist education must receive continuous feedback through evaluation. The purpose of this study was to compare the educational performance of students from the Department of Dental Hygiene in 2018 with those from other departments in the healthcare field. Methods: We used data from the National Assessment of Student Engagement in Learning, conducted by the Korean Educational Development Institute in 2018. The survey data of 55 dental hygiene students and 60 healthcare students at K University were provided after excluding all identifying information. An independent t-test was used for comparisons between the Department of Dental Hygiene and other healthcare departments. Results: Regarding class-related activities, dental hygiene students were passive in presentations, discussions, and projects and had significantly lower grades in cooperative learning and challenging learning. Regarding extra-class activities, dental hygiene students had significantly lower global learning and external experiences, domestic experiences, club activities, and interactions with professors. Regarding learning outcomes, students had significantly lower grades in writing, speaking, critical and analytical thinking, data evaluation, understanding of data meaning, problem-solving ability, goal setting and execution, core content extraction, human and material resource utilization, creative convergence thinking, statistical understanding and analysis, information technology use, collaboration, sense of community, stress management, time management, and foreign language proficiency. Conclusions: Dental hygiene education requires innovation in educational methods and efforts of instructors to improve poor learning activities and outcomes.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to suggest a method for training students majoring in dental hygiene with a sense of professionalism by identifying meta-cognition, efficient learning strategies, and self-directedness necessary to become a spontaneous, self-controlled learner. Methods: A survey was conducted on 316 students majoring in dental hygiene, and collected data were analyzed using SPSS, version 23.0. A post-hoc analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, and Duncan's multiple range test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship among meta-cognition, learning strategy, and self-directedness. Results: The meta-cognition, learning strategy, and self-directedness scores of students majoring in dental hygiene were 3.25, 3.08, and 3.12, respectively. Meta-cognition was significant because the grade was lower, and the previous semester grade and major satisfaction were higher. Learning strategy was significant because the previous semester grade and major satisfaction were higher among general high school students. Self-directedness was significantly low in students whose self-conviction score was below 2.0 in terms of the previous semester grade and significantly high with high self-satisfaction. Conclusions: Instructors at the dental hygiene department should acknowledge the importance of meta-cognition, find various teaching methods to improve learning strategy, and encourage students to participate in class by enhancing self-directedness in learning.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine what teaching behavior would have a good effect on learners in lecture-style instruction in the department of dental hygiene. Methods : The subjects in this study were 650 students who were in the three-year department of dental hygiene at four colleges in Gyeonggi Province and Chungcheong Province. After a survey was conducted, frequency analysis and ANOVA were utilized to analyze the collected data. The findings of the study were as follows. Results : The students put the highest value on knowledge among the factors of teaching behavior irrespective of their academic year, academic standing and learning style, followed by skills and attitude. Out of every subfactor, they set the highest value on a sense of humor regardless of their academic year, academic standing and learning style, and put the lowest value on the attitude factor such as enthusiasm. There were differences among the students in evaluation of the factors of teaching behavior according to academic year, and the students whose academic year was higher set a higher value on the factors of teaching behavior. There were no differences according to their academic standing and learning style. Conclusions : The dental hygiene students viewed the knowledge factor as the effective factor of teaching behavior, and regarded a sense of humor as the best subfactor. Although the attitude factor like enthusiasm is important, it seemed that the students hoped for the kind of instruction that would be delightful, intriguing and clearly convey what to learn.
This paper describes biomedical ethics problem perception in dental hygiene students. Questionnaire surveys were conducted for 285 in dental hygiene students from September 3th to 21th of 2007. For statistical analyses of collected data, the descriptive analyses and chi-square were adopted. This collected data showed that bribery as the most common ethical problem. Other frequently mentioned problems are unkindness of patient and treatment equality. They agreed to artificial abortion in 79.1%, human cloning was statistically significant by grade. Biomedical ethics problem except euthanasia and human cloning were statistically significant by resident area. Also, brain death was statistically significant by religion.

Result : Where they hoped to find a job was analyzed, and they hoped to be hired in an large city due to the possibility of development and expectations for high pay, and the students who wanted to be employed in a small or mid-sized urban community cited personal connections as the reason(p<.001). As for conditions for getting a good job, the largest number of the students placed importance on skills, and the students who were in the higher academic years attached more importance to skills and money(p<.01). As for preferred workplace, dental hospital was the biggest group's favorite workplace, and the students who were in the higher academic years preferred to work in dental clinic or dental hospital(p<.05). Concerning the length of dental hygienist career, the greatest group thought it would be between 11 and 15 years(p<.05). The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data needed to plan the effective teaching design of scaling education and to measure the changes in students' confidence in performing scaling according to the number of scaling practices. Scaling education is presented as a core basic hygiene competency of dental hygienists and evaluated as the practical competency of dental hygienists. This study selected 48 third-year students from the department of dental hygiene at S University in Asan, and analyzed data from completed participant surveys. The degree of "confidence in facing the subject in clinical practice," "confidence in applying hand instrument to the subject," and "confidence in applying ultrasonic instruments to the subject" was assessed on a five-point Likert scale. The difference in confidence was analyzed during five practice sessions. Each response was compared using frequency analysis, chi-square test, and repeated measurement ANOVA. Students who complained of a lack of confidence in the 14.6%, 25.0%, and 12.5%, respectively, in face-to-face practice, hand instruments, and ultrasonic instrument application responses. The more the practice was repeated, the more confident students were in all three categories, and the more statistically significant (p<0.001). As the number of scaling practice sessions increased, students' confidence in performing scaling also improved. In particular, the level of self-confidence was higher after the third practice session when compared to the first session. Therefore, it is necessary to design effective courses for teaching scaling practices so that at least three repetitive practice periods can be provided in clinical dental hygiene practices.
