Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors on English interest and anxiety in dental hygiene students. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 1,040 dental hygiene students in six universities in Busan and Gyeongnam from April 1 to 30, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics, foreign language performance anxiety scale, and English interest. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regressions. Results : Those who travelled abroad tended to have a liking for English. English credits significantly influenced on English interest. and employment. The period of English study was proportional to interest and grade of English. Conclusions : The interest and anxiety for English was the major factor to improve the mastery of English. The dental hygienists must try to improve the mastery of language proficiency.
Objectives: This study analyzes the demands of dental hygiene college students for English courses and proposes ways to improve English courses for college students majoring in dental hygiene that would take advantage of English for specific purposes (ESP) in the future. Methods: Using a structured questionnaire, four universities by region with departments of dental hygiene were selected at random, and out of a total of 260 college students majoring in dental hygiene, data of 258 students, excluding data with missing values, were considered for investigating the needs of English curriculum development using the SPSS program. Results: Total 82.1% of the students expected English programs, and they said that English was important, The proposal for English curriculum development indicated that although the number of English programs was sufficient, diversification of English programs or changes in methods of managing classes were required. As for the need for English programs (66.4%), they required more ESP, such as practical English for dental or dental terminology, which can be used clinically and more than English for general purposes (EGP). Conclusions: Students in dental hygiene showed a higher demand for more professional ESP that can use clinically as dental hygienists in the future. It is necessary to consider the reorganization of the curriculum or changes in the method of managing English classes by reflecting one demands of dental hygiene students.
Objectives: This study analyzes factors related to English communication skills in the dental health services of clinical dental hygienists who provide dental medical services to foreigners. Methods: Surveys were conducted to measure students' English communication skills. Participants comprised 195 clinical dental hygienists working at dental English study cafes or who provided dental medical services to foreigners. After analyzing the differences in English communication skills, hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed on the factors related to English communication skills. Results: English communication skill of dental hygienists was 1.96 points out of 5 points. The factors related to the English communication skill of the clinical dental hygienists were foreign patient care, language training experience, overseas living experience, and certified English proficiency. The adjusted explanatory power of this model was 53.0%. Conclusions: Dental hygienists in charge of foreign patients have experience in language training and overseas residence, have a language qualification certificate, and have higher English communication skills. It is necessary to develop English language learning programs based on metaverse to develop the English communication skills of dental hygienists who provide dental health services to foreign patients and to operate a creative educational environment to increase interest in learning English.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitude toward English learning in the dental hygiene students. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the 498 dental hygiene students in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gangwon and Chungcheong Province. The questionnaire consisted of motive of English learning, confidence and interest. Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 program. Results : Approximately 85 percent of the students had strong motivation for English learning. Test-based English learning generally discouraged the students(61.8%). The students found that listening and speaking was the best way of learning English(44.6%). Most of the students were very interested in English but the cramming method of learning made them tired(p<0.05). Conclusions : Self-directed learning is the best way of learning English to the students. The curriculum should consist of actual listening and speaking practices instead of test-based study.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the awareness and needs of English learning in allied health science college students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 600 health science college students in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon province. The questionnaire consisted of purpose of English learning, attitude and motivation. Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0 program. Results: Most of the students took English classes(96%) and the English class was mainly done by instruction-centered learning (43.6%). Many students felt the needs of English and they thought English was the most important tool for getting a job(70.7%). Nonetheless most of the students lacked in confidence and interest in English learning due to the surrounding pressure(51.2%). Too much surrounding pressure can cause students lose their zest in English learning. Conclusions: It is need to seek for a curriculum consisting of practical purposes to meet the needs of health science college students about English learning.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to make a comparative analysis of the websites of dental office from different countries to provide some information for the quality evaluation of the websites of dental office. Methods : Two hundred twenty-four dental websites were selected by using Yahoo, one of the international portal sites, which included 59 from the United States, 50 from the United Kingdom, 54 from Canada, and 61 from Korea. Results : 1. As results of the credibility of the websites, the Canadian websites were most reliable, followed by the American websites, the English websites and the Korean ones(p<0.005). 2. As results of the complementarity of the websites, the Korean websites were most interactive, followed by the American websites, the English websites, and the Canadian ones(p<0.001). 3. As results of the accessibility of use of the websites, the Korean websites were easiest to use, followed by the American websites, the Canadian websites, and the English ones(p<0.001). 4. As results of the update of the websites from the nations, the Korean websites were most sustainable, followed by the English websites, the Canadian websites and the American ones(p<0.05). 5. When the overall quality of the dental office websites was assessed, the Korean websites were the best, followed by the Canadian websites, the American websites and the English ones(p<0.001). Conclusions : In order to make accurate oral health information more accessible to people in general, prolonged research efforts should be continued for the evaluation of the quality of dental office websites, and the development of standard international evaluation criteria is required as well.
Using EPG, the stop and fricative portions of the Korean and English afficates were examined to find out whether the stop and fricative portions of Korean affricates are the same as those of English ones in articulation, as generally assumed in the literature. The English affricate in the word 'choose' is classified as alveopalatal just like the Korean affricate in the word 'cam'. The results of the EPG data showed that Korean affricates were not articulated the same as those in English, especially in the stop portion. In English, the stop portion of 'choose' was quite similar to /t/ as 'tooth', but in Korean, the stop portion of 'cam' was somewhat different from /t/ in 'tam'. More specifically, the stop portion of /t/ in 'tam' was articulated with the contact at the upper teeth and the alveolar ridge, but the stop portion of /t/ in 'cam' was articulated with the contact in the alveopalatal region. This shifting in the place of articulation of the stop portions of the Korean affricate (from dental and alveolar to alveopalatal) can be explained. Unlike English affricates, the stop portions of Korean affricates and the fricative portions of Korean affricates are co-articulated at the same place of articulation.
The objective of this review was to investigate the efficacy of dental local anesthetics, as it is well known among clinicians that local anesthesia may be challenging in some circumstances. Therefore, the focus of this review was on the efficacy of the products used in dental local anesthesia. In a Pubmed database literature search conducted, a total of 8646 articles were found to be related to dental local anesthetics. After having applied the inclusion criteria (human research, performed in the last 10 years, written in English language, and focus on dental local anesthetics) and having assessed the quality of the papers, 30 were deemed eligible for inclusion in this review. The conclusion of this review is that none of the dental local anesthetic amides provide 100% anesthesia. The problem appears to be more pronounced when mandibular teeth are attempted to be anaesthetized and especially if there is irreversible pulpitis involved. The authors conclude that this finding suggest exploration of more efficient techniques to administer dental local anesthesia, especially in the mandible, to establish a 100% efficacy, is needed.
Purpose: With the popularity of implant therapy, clinicians need to know about treating the dental implant in patients with gingival involvement of oral lichen planus (OLP). The aim of this study is to evaluate the survival and success rates of dental implant and propose of clinical guidelines for implant treatment in OLP patient with gingival involvement. Methods: A literature search was performed in PubMed/Medline, and Cochrane database. Papers in English language published between 1990 and 2019 were evaluated. The focused questions were following; 1) Dose gingival OLP affect the survival and success rates of dental implants? 2) The management of OLP patients with gingival involvement receiving dental implant. Results: There was no study about the evaluation of dental implant only in gingival OLP patient. Five studies evaluating dental implants in OLP patients were included in this review. Implant survival rate was 100.0% in well-controlled OLP patients in all included studies. The use of topical/systemic corticosteroid in OLP patients was performed before and/or after implant placement in all included studies. Conclusions: The implant survival and success rates in well-controlled OLP patients did not different from that of non-OLP healthy subjects. The gingival OLP is associated with higher rate of peri-implant mucositis. Adequate management of gingival OLP lesions before and after implant insertion is required to reduce inflammation and associated bone loss.
Purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI), represented by deep learning, can be used for real-life problems and is applied across all sectors of society including medical and dental field. The purpose of this study is to review articles about deep learning that were applied to the field of oral and maxillofacial radiology. Materials and Methods: A systematic review was performed using Pubmed, Scopus, and IEEE explore databases to identify articles using deep learning in English literature. The variables from 25 articles included network architecture, number of training data, evaluation result, pros and cons, study object and imaging modality. Results: Convolutional Neural network (CNN) was used as a main network component. The number of published paper and training datasets tended to increase, dealing with various field of dentistry. Conclusion: Dental public datasets need to be constructed and data standardization is necessary for clinical application of deep learning in dental field.
