  • In order to estimate the confidence level of the velocity distribution shown in a velocity image reconstructed from a travel-time tomography, the ray coverage and the inversion characteristics of the system matrix were investigated. The targets of the analysis is the first arrival travel-time, the raypath information, and the resulting velocity model. The ray coverage, degree of ray and model coupling, was estimated by the number of rays and total ray length in a velocity grid, and information regarding the resolution and uncertainties involved in the reconstructed velocity model was derived from the results of the SVD analysis of the system matrix that relates the data space (first arrival travel times) to the model space (velocity distribution in tomogram).

  • The Lorentz force distribution of a high $T_c$ superconducting tape with increasing transport currents in magnetic field ($H_a$) was visualized. The external magnetic field was applied normally to the coated conductor tape surface after zero-field cooling, and the transport current ($I_a$) was increased stepwise from 0 to 90 % of the values of the critical current ($I_c$ ($H_a$)) at applied filed, Ha. The field distribution (H(x)) near the sample surface across the tape width (2w) was measured using the scanning Hall probe method. Applying an inversion to the measured field distribution, we obtained the underlying current distribution (J(x)), from which the magnetic induction, B(x) was calculated with Biot-Savart law. Then Lorentz force per unit length was calculated using F(x)=J(x)${\times}$B(x), which appears to be very inhomogeneous along the tape width due to the complicated distributions of J(x) and B(x).

  • To understand the characteristics of the passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser output energy with $Cr^{4+}$:YAG saturable absorbers, the transmissions of $Cr^{4+}$:YAG and the inversion population densities of Nd:YAG at the onset of Q-switch were experimentally analysed. The measured transmissions at the onset of Q-switch were 0.70$\pm$0.02 and 0.62$\pm$0.02 for the 0.48 and 0.38 of initial transmission, respectively. It means that the initial transmission loss of $Cr^{4+}$:YAG absorber is reduced in a low Q-state due to the initial absorbing effect of $Cr^{4+}$:YAG. In pumping stage, $Cr^{4+}$:YAG has absorbing processes due to the fluorescence and amplified spontaneous emissions of the Nd:YAG even if there is no laser oscillation. The minimum population inversion densities for Qswitch were approximately 3.7${\times}{10^{17}}$ and 4.0${\times}{10^{17}}$ $cm^{-3}$, respectively. At the beginning of Q-switch, the number density of $Cr^{4+}$ions in the ground state of $Cr^{4+}$:YAG was approximately 1.4${\times}{10^{17}}$ $cm^{-3}$ and the ratio of the ground to the excited state of absorbing $Cr^{4+}$ions was 0.44 both. The modified theoretical output energies with the initial absorbing effect were 18 and 18.5 mJ. The measured output energies were 17$\pm$1 and 18$\pm$1.5 mJ, respectively. The quantum extraction efficiencies of Q-switch were 0.32 both. The theoretical Q-switched output results with the initial absorbing effect of the saturable absorber are a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • To analyze the crustal velocity structures beneath 21 broadband seismic stations in Gangwon Province, South Korea, we first applied the H-κ stacking method to 139 teleseismic event data (Mw ≥ 5.8 and the epicentral distance of 30° - 90°) occurring between March 18, 2019 and December 31, 2022 to estimate the Moho depths and Vp/Vs ratios beneath each station. The Moho depths and Vp/Vs ratios from the H-κ stacking method range from 24.9 to 33.2 km depth and 1.695 - 1.760, respectively, and the estimated Vp/Vs ratios were applied to the joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersion to obtain 1-D crustal velocity models beneath each station. The resulting Moho depths range from 25.9 to 33.7 km depth, similar to the results from the H-κ stacking method. Moho depth results from the both methods are generally consistent with Airy's isostasy. The 1-D crustal velocity models confirm that the existence of 2 km thick low-velocity layers with P-wave velocities of 5 km/s or less at some stations in the Taebaeksan basin, and at the stations CHNB and GAPB in northern Gangwon Province, which are located above the Cenozoic sedimentary layer. The station SH2B, although not overlying a sedimentary layer, has a low P-wave velocity near the surface, which is probably due to various factors such as weathering of the bedrock. We also observe a velocity inversion with decreasing velocity with depth at all stations within 4 - 12 km depths, and mid-crustal discontinuities possibly due to density differences in the rocks at around 10 km depth below some stations.

  • Using N_ Ch silicon gate technology . the capacitors and transistors with various dimenssion were fabricated. Although the applied process was somewhat standard the conditions of ion implantation for the gate were varied by changing the implant energies from 30keV to 60keV for B and from 100 keV to 175keV for P . The doses of the implant also changed from 3 $\times$ 10 /$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 5 $\times$ 10 /$\textrm{cm}^2$ for B and from 4$\times$ 10 /$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 7 $\times$ 10 /$\textrm{cm}^2$ for P . The D. C. parameters such as threshold voltage. substrate doping level, the degree of inversion, capacitance. flat band voltage, depletion layer width, gate oxide thickless, surface states, motile charge density, electron mobility. leakage current were evaluated and also compared with the corresponing theoretical values and / or good numbers for application. The threshold voltages measured using curve tracer and C-V plot gave good agreements with the values calculated from SUPREM II which has been developed by Stanford University process group. The threshold vol tapes with back gate bias were used to calculate the change of the substrate doping level. The measured subthreshold slope enabled the prediction of the degree of inversion The D. C. testing results suggest the realized capacitors and transistors are suited for the memory applications.

  • Flat sheet microfiltration membranes were prepared with polysulfone (PSF), polyethersulfone (PES), and polyphenylsulfone (PPS) by an immersion precipitation phase inversion method. In this method, dimethyl formamide (DMF) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as a solvent and a wetting polymer additive, respectively. 2-butoxyethanol (BE) was used as a nonsolvent additive catalyst to form pore. The morphology of membranes was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and micropermporometer. The permeability of the membranes was evaluated with the flux of pure water. When the BE was added, the pore size of membranes became larger than blank membranes. The changes in the morphology of membrane due to the BE addition depend on polymer structure. All membranes have similar mean pore size and porosity. The mean pore sizes of PSF, PES, and PPS membranes were 0.282, 0.330 $0.308{\mu}m$, respectively. The porosities of PSF, PES and PPS membranes were 68.5, 66.1, 66.4%, respectively. However, the PPS membrane showed higher pore density on surface and narrower pore size distribution than PSF or PES membrane does. As a result, the pure water flux of PPS membrane ($357L/m^2\;hr$) was higher than that of PSF ($196L/m^2\;hr$) or PES membrane ($214L/m^2\;hr$).

  • A geophysical mapping was performed for Hwasan caldera which is located in Euisung Sub-basin of the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. In order to overcome the limitation of the previous studies, remote sensing technic was used and dense potential data were obtained and analyzed. First, we analyzed geological lineament for target area using geological map, digital elevation model (DEM) data and satellite imagery. The results were greatly consistent with the previous studies, and showed that N-S and NW-SE direction are the most dominant one in target area. Second, based on the lineament analysis, highly dense gravity data were acquired in Euisung Sub-basin and an integrated interpretation considering air-born magnetic data was made to investigate the regional structure of the target area. The results of power spectrum analysis for the acquired potential data revealed that the subsurface of Euisung Sub-basin have two density discontinuities at about 1 km and 3-5 km depth. A 1 km depth discontinuity is thought as the depth of pyroclastic sedimentary rocks or igneous rocks which were intruded at the ring vent of Hwasan caldera, while a 3-5 km depth discontinuity seems to be associated with the depth of the basin basement. In addition, three-dimensional gravity inversion for the total area of Euisung Sub-basin was carried out, and the inversion results indicated two followings; 1) Cretaceous Palgongsan granite and Bulguksa intrusion rocks, which are located in southeastern part and northeastern part of Euisung Sub-basin, show two major low density anomalies, 2) pyroclastic rocks around Hwasan caldera also have lower density when compared with those of neighborhood regions and are extended to 1.5 km depth. However, a poor vertical resolution of potential survey makes it difficult to accurately delineate the detailed structure caldera which has a vertically developed characteristic in general. To overcome this limitation, integrated analysis was carried out using the magnetotelluric data on the corresponding area with potential data and we could obtain more reasonable geologic structure.

  • 3-D Multi-geophysical surveys were carried out around the Hwasan caldera at the Euisung Sub-basin. To overcome the limitations of resolutions in previous studies, dense gravity data and magnetotelluric (MT) data were obtained and analyzed. In this study, the independent inversion models from gravity and MT data were integrated using correlation and classification approaches for 3-D imaging of the geologic structures. A Structure Index (SI) method was proposed and applied to the integration and classification analyses. This method consists of Type Angle (TA) and Type Intensity (TI) values, which are estimated by the spatial correlation and abnormality of the physical properties. The SI method allowed the classification analysis to be effectively performed. Major findings are as follows: 1) pyroclastic rocks around the central area of the Hwasan caldera with lower density and resistivity than those of neighboring regions extended to a depth of around 1 km, 2) intrusive igneous rocks with high resistivity and density were imaged around the ring fault boundary, and 3) a basement structure with low resistivity and high density, at a depth of 3-5 km, was inferred by the SI analysis.

  • A self-bearing is an electric machine that achieves both rotational actuation and magnetic levitation using a single magnetic structure. To be able to stably levitate the rotor in a self-bearing, one needs to have an inverse of the force-current model. However, the force-current model in a self-bearing motor is typically not square. Furthermore, the elements of the matrix vary with respect to the rotational angle, resulting in singularities of the pseudo-inverse at various angles. In this paper, we propose a new force-current model that eliminates the singularities by adding a constraint in coil currents. This constraint eliminates the flux density in the stator core so that the saturation problem in the previous study is avoided. By implementing this force-current model, we are able to implement a levitation controller for a toroidally-wound self-bearing BLDC motor. The model inversion and levitation are validated experimentally.
