  • Currently, big data and open data, together with traditional measured data, have come to constitute a new data environment, expanding new technical paths for quantitative analysis of the street environment. Streets provide precious linear public space in high-density residential areas. Pedestrian activities are the main body of street vitality. In this paper, 441 street segments were selected from 21 residential districts in high-density downtown area of Shanghai as cases, to quantitatively evaluate the influencing factors of pedestrian activities. Bivariate analysis was performed, and the results showed that street vitality was not only correlated with a highly populated environment, but also with other factors. In particular, the density of entrances and exits of residential properties, the proportion of walkable areas, and the density of retail and service facilities, were correlated with the vitality of street segments. The magnitudes of correlation between the street environmental factors and the pedestrian traffic differed across various trip purposes. Segment connectivity factors were more correlated with walking for leisure than for transportation. While public transportation factors were mainly correlated with walking for transportation, vehicular traffic factors were negatively correlated with walking for leisure.

  • The Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) has two main problems to be overcome due to high mobility and frequently changing density: one is short link duration time and the other is high packet loss ratio. To solve the problems, there have been many studies to predict vehicular mobility. Most of the studies try to enhance link expire time and link reliability, however the distance between two relay nodes becomes too short to have high network throughput. In this paper, we propose a new routing algorithm that considers both link expire time and network throughput in the VANET. The proposed algorithm aims to find path with long link expire time and high throughput. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the legacy greedy algorithm and its variants.

  • Cavitation in cryogenic fluids generates substantial thermal effects and strong variations in fluid properties, which in turn alter the cavity characteristics. In order to investigate the cavitation characteristics in cryogenic fluids, numerical simulations are conducted around an axisymmetric ogive in liquid nitrogen and hydrogen respectively. The modified Merkle cavitation model and energy equation which accounts for the influence of cavitation are used, and variable thermal properties of the fluid are updated with software. A good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data are obtained. The results show that vapor production in cavitation extracts the latent heat of evaporation from the surrounding liquid, which decreases the local temperature, and hence the local vapor pressure in the vicinity of cavity becomes lower. The cavitation characteristics in cryogenic fluids are obtained that the cavity seems frothy and the cavitation intense is lower. It is also found that when the fluid is operating close to its critical temperature, thermal effects of cavitation are more obviously in cryogenic fluids. The thermal effect on cavitation in liquid hydrogen is more distinctively compared with that in liquid nitrogen due to the changes of density ratio, vapour pressure gradient and other variable properties of the fluid.

  • In this study, two types of central flow distributor designs are presented and compared to obtain the optimal compact design which has the least flow resistance and the uniform flow distribution in a vehicular fuel cell stack. For effective and reliable prediction on the thermo-flow characteristics of the reactants flow over the entire fuel cell stack domain, open channel flow in the bipolar plates of the power generating cells were simulated by applying a simplified flow resistance model with an empirical porous concept. A number of case studies were performed to figure out an optimal configuration of a central flow distributor device in terms of the time-dependent thermo-flow behavior and load-dependent flow distribution. The results showed that the stable and load-independent thermo-flow uniformity is very design specific, which is closely associated with the design of central manifolding devices in order to achieve the enhanced volumetric power density and the reliable long-lasting operating of fuel cells.

  • This study is to define new road capacity concept, and to develop and propose an estimation method, through the analysis of individual vehicular behaviors in continuum flow. Developments in detection technology enable various and precise traffic data collection. The U.S. HCM (Highway Capacity Manual) method does not require such various and precise traffic data, and outputs only limited results. Alternative capacity concepts, which can be classified into a stochastic model and behavioral or deterministic model, are attempts for modeling some prominent traffic flow features, namely so-called a capacity drop and a traffic hysteresis, using such various and precise traffic data. Yet, no capacity concept up-to-date can describe both features. The analysis of individual vehicular behaviors, including speed-density plot per time lap, traffic flow-speed-density diagram per each sampling interval, time headway distribution, and free flow speed distribution, is performed for overcoming the limits of the previous capacity concepts. A stochastic methods are applied to determine time headway for estimating freeway capacity for traffic control.

  • This research starts from the questioning of current housing development on the hilly site in Korea. It aims to investigate various design techniques of low-rise housing as an alternative housing plan on hilly sites. Several generic solutions of the combination of building type and road pattern are tested for a simulation process, and evaluated in terms of crucial design issues; development density, parking space and open space. As a result, four reasonable models are selected for making full use of geographical features of hilly site, two models each land slope of $18^{\circ}$ and $26^{\circ}$. Several design techniques for each model are also suggested, in ensuring the development feasibility by considering land slope, vehicular access and parking, common open space, and community facilities.

  • An accumulator in hydraulic systems stores kinetic energy during braking action, and then that controls hasty surge pressure. An energy recovery system using accumulator seems to be advantageous for ERBS due to its high energy density. This study suggests a method to decide suitable accumulator volume for ERBS. The method is based upon energy conservation between kinetic energy of moving inertia and elastic energy of accumulator. The energy conversion was analyzed and a simple formula was derived. Also accumulator tests were conducted for different load mass and motor speed. A series of test work were carried out in the laboratory and the dynamic characteristics of the hydraulic motor system, such as the surge pressure and response time, were investigated in both brake action and acceleration action and these results show that the proposed design is effective for decision accumulator volume in ERBS.

  • In this paper, the mobile communication CH simulator is implemented in the baseband, using the Digital Signal Processor(TMS320C25), A/D and D/A converters. The Rayleigh CH is modeled by shaping the random noise source power spectrum. The statistical characteristics(Level Crossing Rate, Cumulative distribution Function, Probability Density Function) and the received fading signal's power's spectrum is observed when the doppler frequency is varied according to the variation of the vehicular velocity at the 222MHz band. And also the BER is measured when the baseband mobile CH simulator is applied to the GMSK(Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying` transmission rate: 16kbps, Bb T=0.25) modulator. The results shows the similar characteristics to be compared with the theoritically derived BER values of the discriminator type GMSK detection.

  • The study presents the linear dynamic analysis of bridges under vehicular movement to examine the performance characteristics due to the various structural and loading conditions. The road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interactions are considered. The road surface profiles for the approaching roadway and bridge decks are generated from power spectral density functions for different road roughness conditions. A new filtering method using the wheel trace is proposed to obtain the more rational bridge-vehicle interactions from the randomly generated road surface. The dynamic responses of various bridges designed according to current design practice are examined, in which important structural parameters(such as span length, girder spacing, etc.) are considering systematically. In addition, the traffic conditions of multi-truck traveling either consecutively on the same lane or side-by-side on the adjacent lanes are also evaluated.

  • In the VANET, density is a most important factor for reception rate of packet. So, we have to find solutions to reduce packet collision. There are two approaches. First, packet collision avoid by controlling transmission interval. Second, packet collision avoid by controlling transmission power. In this paper, we propose a simple method to reduce a packet collision by controlling transmission power. It uses the number of neighbors and adaptive controlling method. This method have better performance about packet reception rate.
