In order to estimate the quantitative roles of the tide induced residual currents, density currents and wind driven currents on the residual currents in Kwangynag Bay Korea, numerical experiments with a diagnostic multi-level model were carried out. Density currents were calculated from the temperature and salinity data observed in January, May, August and November 1998. Anti-clockwise circulations are formed at the western inner part of the bay, the location from the east of Myodo Is. to the south of POSCO Co. and the place between Yeosu peninsula and Namhae Is. from the calculation results of the tide induced residual currents. Velocities of the density currents are less than 3cm/s at the western inner part of the bay and about 5cm/s at the southern entrance of the bay. Density currents get strong in summer and weak in autumn. Wind driven currents at the surface layer flow in the directions of the given winds which are the daily mean winds when the temperature and salinity observations are carried out. In the middle and lower layers, however the wind driven currents flow in the opposite direction to the surface currents as supplementary currents. The surface wind driven currents are greater than the tide induced residual currents or the density currents. The calculated residual currents including the tide induced residual currents, density currents and wind driven currents agree with the results of the current observations approximately. In the Bay, the wind driven currents affect on the residual currents greatestly and tide induced residual currents and density currents do in the second place and the third place.
Density currents have been easily observed in environmental flows, for instance turbidity currents and pollutant plumes in the oceans and rivers. In this study, we explored the propagation dynamics of density currents using the FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics code. The renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ scheme, a turbulence numerical technique, is employed in a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes framework (RANS). The numerical simulations focused on two different types of intrusive density flows: (1) propagating into a two-layer ambient fluid; (2) propagating into a linearly stratified fluid. In the study of intrusive density flows into a two-layer ambient fluid, intrusive speeds were compared with laboratory experiments and analytical solutions. The numerical model shows good quantitative agreement for predicting propagation speed of the density currents. We also numerically reproduced the effect of the ratio of current depth to the overall depth of fluid. The numerical model provided excellent agreement with the analytical values. It was also clearly demonstrated that RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ scheme within RANS framework is able to accurately simulate the dynamics of density currents. Simulations intruding into a continuously stratified fluid with the various buoyancy frequencies are carried out. These simulations demonstrate that three different propagation patterns can be developed according to the value of $h_n/H$ : (1) underflows developed with $h_n/H=0$ ; (2) overflows developed when $h_n/H=1$ ; (3) intrusive interflow occurred with the condition of 0 < $h_n/H$ < 1.
We studied the Cretaceous Jeonggaksan Formation to determine depositional processes of pyroclastic density currents entering into the lacustrine environments. This formation is composed largely of sandstone-mudstone couplets and (tuffaceous) normally graded sandstones deposited in lacustrine environments, interbedded with two pyroclastic beds: welded massive lapilli tuff and normally graded lapilli tuff. The welded massive lapilli tuff (10 m thick) is composed of poorly sorted, structureless lapilli supported by a welded ash matrix. The normally graded lapilli tuff (4 m thick) is characterized by moderately to well sorted natures and multiple normally graded divisions in the lower part of the bed with internal boundaries. The contrasting depositional features between these lapilli tuff are suggestive of different physical characteristics and depositional processes of pyroclastic density currents in the lake. Overall poorly sorted and massive natures of the thick, welded massive lapilli tuff are interpreted to have been formed by rapid settling of pyroclastic sediments from highly concentrated and sustained pyroclastic density currents. In this case, the pyroclastic density currents were able to displace lake water from shoreline and the pyrolclastic density currents preserved their own heat except for frontal parts of the currents. As a result, welded textures can be formed despite entrance of pyroclastic density currents into the lake. The internal boundaries of the normally graded lapilli tuff reflect unsteady natures of the pyroclastic density currents at the time of the deposition and the pyroclastic density currents can not provide sufficient pressure to displace lake water. As a consequence, the pyroclastic density currents transformed into water-saturated turbidity currents, forming relatively well sorted, normally graded lapilli tuff.

This paper deals with the behaviors of magnetic flux density near down-conductors by lightning currents. The background on the principle of magnetic flux density measurements using the RL self-integrating magnetic field sensor was described. The magnetic flux density measuring device consisting of RL self-integrating magnetic field sensor and differential amplifier was designed and fabricated. The frequency bandwidth of the magnetic flux density measuring system ranges from 200 Hz to 300 KHz and the response sensitivity was 0.126 $\mu$T/㎷ The distributions of the magnetic flux density near down-conductors due to impulse currents with various rise times were analyzed as a parameter of the bonding conditions and materials of conductor and wiring conduits. The magnetic flux density due to impulse currents was inversely proportional to the distance between the down-conductor and measuring point. The amplitude of the magnetic flux density for PVC Pipe with down-conductor was 72 $\mu$T/㎷ at the distance of 1m and was higher than for steel conduits and coaxial cable. Finally the magnetic flux density is increased with increasing the di/dt it and oscillation frequency of lightning currents in this experimental ranges.
In general, two dimensionless numbers are used in predicting the front propagation rate of density currents: the densimetric Froude number and the dimensionless front velocity. The former expresses the front speed in terms of the characteristic length and reduced gravitational acceleration. Previous papers report that the range of this dimensionless number is wide. The other is the dimensionless front velocity, which is a function of the buoyancy flux per unit width. This paper presents the state of the art review of the dimensionless numbers for the front propagation rate of density currents. Values of the densimetric Froude number are found to be consistent when the proper characteristic length is used for normalization. Then, the densimetric Froude number and the dimensionless front velocity are compared by using the experimental data of density currents over a horizontal surface.
We assumed the situation where an eruption column had been formed by the explosive Plinian eruption from Mt. Baekdu and that the collapse of eruption column had caused pyroclastic density currents to occur. Based on this assumption, we simulated by using a Titan2D model. To find out about the range of the impacts of pyroclastic density currents by volcanic eruption scenarios, we studied the distance for the range of the impacts by VEIs. To compare the results by each volcanic eruption scenario, we set the location of the vent on the 8-direction flank of the outer rim and on the center of the caldera, the internal friction angle of the pyroclastic density currents as $35^{\circ}$, the bed friction angle as $16^{\circ}$. We set the pile height of column collapse and the vent diameter with various VEIs. We properly assumed the height of the column collapse, the diameter of the vent, the initial rates of the column collapse and the simulation period, based on the VEIs, gravity and the volume of the collapsed volcanic ash. According to the comparative analysis of the simulation results based on the increase of the eruption, the higher VEI by the increase of eruption products, the farther the pyroclastic density currents disperse. To the northwest from the vent on the northeast slope of the outer rim of the caldera, the impact range was 3.3 km, 4.6 km, 13.2 km, 24.0 km, 50.2 km, 83.4 km or more from VEI=2 to VEI=7, respectively. Once the database has been fully constructed, it can be used as a very important material in terms of disaster prevention and emergency management, which aim to minimize human and material damages in the vicinity of Mt. Baekdu when its eruption causes the pyroclastic density currents to occur.
A sedimentation basin is used to remove suspended sediments which can cause abrasive and erosive wear on hydraulic turbines of hydropower plants. This sediment erosion not only decreases efficiency of the turbine but also increases maintenance costs. In this study, the three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out on the overseas hydropower project. The simulations of flow and suspended sediment concentration were obtained using FLOW-3D computational fluid dynamics code. The simulations provide removal efficiency of a sedimentation basin based on particle sizes. The influence of baffles on the flow field and the removal efficiency of suspended sediments in the sedimentation basin has been investigated. This paper also provides the numerical simulations for sediment-induced density currents that may occur in the sedimentation basin. The simulation results indicate that the formation of density currents decreases the removal efficiency. When a baffle is installed in the sedimentation basin, the baffle provides intensive settling zones resulting in increasing the sediments settling. Thus the enhanced removal efficiency can be achieved by installing the baffle inside the sedimentation basin.
$100 A/mm^2$ class Bi-2223 tapes have recently become commercially available. Some important characteristics of the tapes, e .g. critical current, ac loss, characteristics at joint, fault current characteristics, are required for an application such as a power cable or a power transformer. In this paper they have been investigated experimentally. The results indicate that the self-field loss of the high current density tapes is not negligible, compared to resistive loss in a copper wire for the same currents. In a cable, the self-field loss for relatively large currents is much larger than the magnetization loss due to an external field. But in a transformer, the magnetization loss is dominant, compared to the self-field loss. Finally the fault current characteristics show that the high current density tapes are never safe from burn-out even for fault currents with a few cycles.
Paldang Reservoir serves as a crucial water source for the metropolitan area, and national efforts are focused on water quality management. The region near Paldang Dam, where the water intake facility with the greatest depth is located, experiences vertical stratification during the summer. It has been challenging to definitively classify whether this stratification is caused by density currents or summer temperatures. This study aimed to differentiate and analyze stratification due to density currents and temperature variations at key locations in the Paldang Reservoir through vertical water quality measurements. The results allowed us to distinguish between density current and temperature-induced stratification. We found that density currents are primarily caused by temperature differences among inflowing rivers, with flow velocity significantly influencing their persistence. Additionally, based on a combination of monsoon and non-monsoon season characteristics, we classified Paldang Reservoir into regions with distinct river and lake traits.

In order to understand the flow properties of the South Sea of Korea, tidal currents, wind-driven currents, density-driven currents and residual flows were investigated by using 3-dimensional numerical model(POM). In offshore regions, tide-induced residual current tends to flow eastward during the spring tide and westward during the neap tide. Total residual flow is irregular due to the bottom topography in the coastal area. The density-driven currents in the coastal area showed to be relatively weak, with little seasonal differences. The special tendency was apparent in the open sea. That is, the flow in the offshore regions showed results similar to that of the Tsushima current. The wind-driven currents in the coastal area showed to be much stronger than in offshore regions. Vertically, the flow of the surface layer was much stronger than that of the bottom layer. Through these results, material transport and diffusion in the south coast, as a basis for predicting the spread of use is expected to be available.
