Spark Plasma Sintering Behavior of Binderless WC Powders

  • Pure WC powders which does not include a binder phase were consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process at 1600~185$0^{\circ}C$ for 0~30 min under 50 MPa. Microstructure alid mechanical properties of binderless WC prepared by SPS were investigated. With increasing sintering temperature, sintered density and Vickers hardness of binderless WC increased. The fracture toughness of binderless WC was 7~15 MPa $m^{1/2}$ depending on the sintered density and decreased with increasing the Vickers hardness. It is found that the binderless WC prepared by SPS at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under 50 MPa showed nearly full densification with fine-grained structure and revealed excellent mechanical properties of high hardness (~HV 2400) and considerably high fracture toughness (~7 MPa $m^{1/2}$).

  • Nanocrystalline CrN films were deposited on Si (100) substrates by means of asymmetric pulsed DC reactive magnetron sputtering. We investigated the growth behavior, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of CrN films with a change in the duty cycle and pulse frequency. The grain size of the CrN films decreased from 25.4 nm to 11.2 nm upon a decrease in the duty cycle. The corrosion potentials for the CrN films by DC sputtering was approximately - 0.6 V, and it increased to - 0.3 V in the CrN films which underwent pulsed sputtering. The nanoindentation hardness of the CrN films also increased with a decrease in the duty cycle. This enhancement of the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of pulsed sputtered CrN films could be attributed to the densification and surface smoothness of the microstructure of the films.

  • Fourteen model pile load tests using a calibration chamber and instrumented model pile were preformed to investigate the variation of the behaviors of driven piles in sands with soil and lateral cyclic loading conditions. Results of the model tests showed that the first loading cycle generated more than 70% of the pile head rotation developed for 50 lateral loading cycles. Lateral cyclic loading also made an increase of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles for $K_0$=0.4 and an decrease for $K_0$ higher than 0.4. Higher portion of the increase or decrease in the ultimate lateral load capacity by lateral cyclic loading was generated for the first loading cycle due to densification of loosening of the soil around the pile by lateral cyclic loading. It was also observed that a two-way cyclic loading caused higher ultimate lateral load capacity of driven piles than a one-way cyclic loading. When the pile was in the ultimate state, the maximum bending moment developed in the pile increased with increasing $K_0$ value of soil and was insensitive to the magnitude and number of lateral cyclic loading.

  • The reaction-sintered alumina and zirconia-alumina ceramics were fabricated from the Al/Al2O3 or Zl/ZrO2(Ca-PSZ) powder mixtures via the attrition milling. And the effects of the milling characteristics of used raw powders on reaction sintering were investigated. After attrition milling and isopressing at 400 MPa the Al/Al2O3 specimen was oxidated at 1200℃ for 8 hours followed by sintering at 1550℃ for 3 hours. Because mixed powders of flake-type Al with coarse alumina was much more effectively comminuted than the globular-type Al with coarse alumina powders, it's sintered body of more than 97% theoretical density was achived, but low contents of Al leads to relatively higher shrinkage of about 8%. And because coarse alumina particles was much more beneficial in cutting and reducing the ductile Al particles, using the coarse alumina powder was much more effective in reaction sintering. Fused Ca-PSZ powder was reaction sintered with Al at 1550℃ for 3 hours and low shrinkage ZrO2-Al2O3 composites were fabricated. But because Al/Ca-PSZ powder mixtures were not effectively milled the reaction sintering and densification was difficult. And the Ca ion in Ca-PSZ grains diffused into alumina grains during sintering so that the unstabilization of Ca-PSZ body was occured which gave the microcracks in the specimens.

Growth Behavior of Nanocrystalline CrN Coatings by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Assisted Magnetron Sputtering (유도결합 플라즈마를 이용한 마그네트론 스퍼터링으로 증착된 나노결정질 CrN 코팅막의 성장)

  • Nanocrystalline CrN coatings were deposited by DC and ICP-assisted magnetron sputtering on Si (100) substrates. The influences of the ICP power on the microstructural and crystallographic properties of the coatings were investigated. For the generation of the ICP, radio frequency was applied using a dielectric-encapsulated coil antenna installed inside the deposition chamber. As the ICP power increased from 0 to 500W, the crystalline grain size decreased. It is believed that the decrease in the crystal grain size at higher ICP powers is due to resputtering of the coatings as a result of ion bombardment as well as film densification. The preferential orientation of CrN coatings changed from (111) to (200) with an increase in the ICP power. The ICP magnetron sputtering CrN coatings showed excellent surface roughness compared to the DC magnetron sputtering coatings.

  • Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ is one of the most attractive ferroelectric materials for realizing the FeRAM due to its higher remanant polarization and the ability to withstand higher coercive fields. Generally, the ferroelectric materials were patterned by a plasma etching process for high-density FeRAM. The applicable possibility of CMP process to pattern Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ instead of plasma etching process was investigated in our previous study for improvement of an angled sidewall which prevents the densification of ferroelectric memory and is apt to receive the plasma damage. Our previous study showed that good removal rate with the excellent surface roughness compared to plasma etching process were obtained by CMP process for the patterning of Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$. The suitable selectivity to TEOS without any damage to the structural property of Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$ was also guaranteed. In this study, the removal mechanism of $Pb_{1.1}(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ coated by sol-gel method was investigated. Surface analysis of polished specimens at the best and worst conditions was carried out by XPS.

Ball Milling and Sintering Behavior of High Speed Steel Powders Containing VC and Co (VC 및 Co함유 고속도공구강 분말의 볼밀링 및 소결거동)

  • Cobalt and VC powders were ball milled with M2 grade high speed steel powders under various ball to powder ratios. The powders milled under higher ball to powder ratio become finer, more irregular and have a broader size distribution, and thus possess a lower compressibility and a better sinterability regarding densification. Increasing the ball to powder ratio lowered the sintering temperature to obtain the density level necessary to isolate all the pores. Lowering the sintering temperature is very critical to maintain fine microstructure since grain and carbide coarsening are accelerated by higher sintering temperature due to more liquid phase formation. The powders obtained by ball milling at 20 to 1 ratio has the lowest compressibility but has the best sinterability, almost compatible to unmilled pure M2 powders. A sintered body over 97% theoretical density with fine microstructures having average grain size of ~10 microns was obtained from the powder by sintering at 1260 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum. XRD results indicate that two types of carbides are mainly present in the sintered structure, MC and $M_{6}C$ type. The MC type carbides are more or less round shaped and mainly located at the grain boundaries whereas the $M_{6}C$ type are angular shaped and mainly located inside the grains.

  • A computer code, KAFEPA, for analysing in-reactor behavior of a PHWR-fuel rod under reactor normal operating condition was developed. This code, KAFEPA, corresponds to the ELESIM code that was developed for the same purpose by AECL. Even though the KAFEPA originated from the ELESIM, it contains more accurate and theoretical models in comparison with the ELESIM, such as fission gas release model, in-reactor densification model and a new database for neutron flux depression across the radial direction in a fuel pellet. The KAFEPA code was verified by comparing the predictions with 22 measurements of fission product gas release. The predictions of the KAFEPA was well agreed with the experimental data.

  • In this study, powder compaction of AZO (alumina doped zinc oxide) powder was performed with a MTS 810 test system using a cylindrical die having a diameter of 10mm. Pressure-density curves were measured based on the load cell and displacement of the punch. The AZO powder compacts with various densities were formed to investigate the mechanical properties such as fracture stress of the AZO powder as a function of the compact density. Two types of compression tests were conducted in order to estimate the fracture stress using different loading paths: a diameteral compression test and a uniaxial compression test. The pressure-density curves of the AZO powder were obtained and the fracture stress of the compacted powders with various densities was estimated. The results show that the compact pressure dramatically increases as the density increases. Based on the experimental results, calibration of the modified Drucker-Prager/Cap model of the AZO powder for use in FE simulations was developed.

  • Nanopowder of FeAl and $Al_2O_3$ was synthesized from FeO and Al powders by high energy ball milling. Using the pulsed current activated sintering method, the nanocystalline $Al_2O_3$ reinforced FeAl composite was consolidated within two minutes from mechanically synthesized powders. The advantage of this process is that it allows very quick densification to near theoretical density and prohibits grain growth in nanostuctured materials. The grain size, sintering behavior and hardness of sintered $FeAl-Al_2O_3$ composite were investigated.
