  • To defeat abnormal traffic driven by DoS (Denial-of-Service) or DDoS (Distributed DoS), there has been a variety of researches or studies in a few decades. In this paper, we present the results of theoretical performance analysis between attack prevention schemes and attack mitigation schemes. The former is a scheme that prevents abnormal incoming traffic from forwarding into a specific network based on filtering rules, and the latter is a scheme that makes some perimeter or intermediate routers, which exist on the traffic forwarding path, prevent abnormal traffic based on their own abnormal traffic information, or that mitigates abnormal traffic by using quality-of-service mechanisms at the gateway of the target network. The aspects of theoretical performance analysis are defined as the transit rates of either normal traffic or false-positive traffic after an attack detection routine processes its job, and we also present the concrete network bandwidth rates to control incoming traffic.

  • One of the OSI 7 Layer DDoS Attack, HTTP POST DDoS can deny legitimate service by web server resource depletion. This Attack can be executed with less network traffic and legitimate TCP connections. Therefore, It is difficult to distinguish DDoS traffic from legitimate users. In this paper, I propose an anomaly HTTP POST traffic detection algorithm and http each page Content-Length field size limit with defense method for HTTP POST DDoS attack. Proposed method showed the result of detection and countermeasure without false negative and positive to use the r-u-dead-yet of HTTP POST DDoS attack tool and the self-developed attack tool.

  • A model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach to implementing hardware-based network cybersecurity controls for APR1400 non-safety data network is presented in this work. The proposed design was developed by implementing packet filtering and deep packet inspection functions to control the unauthorized traffic and malicious contents. Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack was considered as a potential cybersecurity issue that may threaten the data availability and integrity of DCS gateway servers. Logical design architecture was developed to simulate the behavior of functions flow. HDL-based physical architecture was modelled and simulated using Xilinx ISE software to verify the design functionality. For effective modelling process, enhanced function flow block diagrams (EFFBDs) and schematic design based on FPGA technology were together developed and simulated to verify the performance and functional requirements of network security controls. Both logical and physical design architectures verified that hardware-based cybersecurity controls are capable to maintain the data availability and integrity. Further works focus on implementing the schematic design to an FPGA platform to accomplish the design verification and validation processes.

  • As cyber security threats increase, there is a growing demand for highly reliable systems. Common Criteria, an international standard for evaluating information security products, requires formal specification and verification of the system to ensure a high level of security, and more and more cases are being observed. In this paper, we propose highly reliable drone systems that ensure high level security level and trust. Based on the results, we use formal methods especially Z/EVES to improve the system model in terms of scheduling in the system kernel.

  • VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol) IP Spoofing, DoS (Denial of Server) / DDoS(Distributed Denial of Service),

  • Recently, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, such as spreading malicious code, cyber-terrorism, have occurred in government agencies, the press and the financial sector. DDoS attacks are the simplest Internet-based infringement attacks techniques that have fatal consequences. DDoS attacks have caused bandwidth consumption at the network layer. These attacks are difficult to detect defend against because the attack packets are not significantly different from normal traffic. Abnormal traffic is threatening the stability of the network. Therefore, the abnormal traffic by generating indications will need to be detected in advance. This study examined the abnormal traffic detection technique using a forecasting model-based trend model.

  • The network capability to accomplish its functions in a timely fashion under failures and attacks is known as survivability. Ad hoc routing protocols have been studied and extended to various domains, such as Intelligent Transport Systems (ITSs), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), underwater acoustic networks, and Internet of Things (IoT) focusing on different aspects, such as security, QoS, energy. The existing solutions proposed in this domain incur substantial overhead and eventually become burden on the network, especially when there are fewer attacks or no attack at all. There is a need that the effectiveness of these routing protocols be analyzed in the presence of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks without any intrusion detection or prevention system. This will enable us to establish and identify the inherently stable routing protocols that are capable to survive longer in the presence of these attacks. This work presents a DoS attack case study to perform theoretical analysis of survivability on node and network level in the presence of DoS attacks. We evaluate the performance of reactive and proactive routing protocols and analyse their survivability. For experimentation, we use NS-2 simulator without detection or prevention capabilities. Results show that proactive protocols perform better in terms of throughput, overhead and packet drop.

  • The recent past has seen a tremendous amount of advancement in the field of Internet of Things (IoT), allowing the influx of a variety of devices into the market. IoT devices are present in almost every aspect of our daily lives. While this increase in usage has many advantages, it also comes with many problems, including and not limited to, the problem of security. There is a need for better measures to be put in place to ensure that the users' data is protected. In particular, fitness trackers used by a vast number of people, transmit important data regarding the health and location of the user. This data is transmitted from the fitness device to the phone and from the phone onto a cloud server. The transmission from device to phone is done over Bluetooth and the latest version of Bluetooth Light Energy (BLE) is fairly advanced in terms of security, it is susceptible to attacks such as Man-in-the-Middle attack and Denial of Service attack. Additionally, the data must be stored in an encrypted form on the cloud server; however, this proves to be a problem when the data must be decrypted to use for running computations. In order to ensure protection of data, measures such as end-to-end encryption may be used. Homomorphic encryption is a class of encryption schemes that allow computations on encrypted data. This paper explores the application of homomorphic encryption for fitness trackers.
