  • This research was the first step to develop Expert System for Evaluation of Human Sensibility, where human sensibility can be inferred from objective physiological signals. The study aim was to develop an algorithm in which human arousal level can be judged using measured physiological signals. Fuzzy theory was applied for mathematical handling of the ambiguity related to evaluation of human sensibility, and the degree of belonging to a certain sensibility dimension was quantified by membership function through which the sensibility evaluation was able to be done. Determining membership function was achieved using results from a physiological signal database of arousal/relaxation that was generated from imagination. To induce one final result (arousal level) based on measuring the results of more than 2 physiological signals and the membership function of each physiological signal, Dempster-Shafer's Rule of Combination in Evidence was applied, through which the final arousal level was inferred.

  • An intelligent power transformer protective relaying algorithm based on fuzzy decision-making is proposed. To distinguish external faults with CT saturation, overexcitation and inrush conditions from internal faults, a newly designed fuzzy-rule base is used. The Dempster-Shafer's rule of combition is used for fuzzy inference. A series of the S/W and H/W tests show the proposed protection algorithm has practically sufficient sensitivity and selectivity.

  • Three new classification methods for multi temporal images are proposed. They are named as a likelihood addition method, a likelihood majority method and a Dempster-Shafer's rule method. Basic strategies using these methods are to calculate likelihoods for each temporal data and to combine obtained likelihoods for final classification. These three methods use different combining algorithms. From classification experiments, following results were obtained. The method based on Dempster-Shafer's rule of combination showed about 12% improvement of classification accuracies compared to a conventional method. This method needed about 16% more processing times than that of a conventional method. The other two proposed method showed 1% to 5% increase of classification accuracies. However processing times of these two proposed method showed 1% to 5% increase of classification accuracies. However processing times of these two methods are almost the same with that of a conventional method. Among the newly proposed three methods, the Dempster-Shafer's rule method showed the highest classification accuracies with more processing time than those of other methods.

  • Multiple evidences based decision making is an important functionality for computers and robots. To combine multiple evidences, mathematical theory of evidence has been developed, and it involves the most vital part called Dempster's rule of combination. The rule is used for combining multiple evidences. However, the combined result gives a counterintuitive conclusion when highly conflicting evidences exist. In particular, when we obtain two different sources of evidence for a single hypothesis, only one of the sources may contain evidence. In this paper, we introduce a modified combination rule based on the partial conflict measurement by using an absolute difference between two evidences' basic probability numbers. The basic probability number is described in details in Section 2 "Mathematical Theory of Evidence". As a result, the proposed combination rule outperforms Dempster's rule of combination. More precisely, the modified combination rule provides a reasonable conclusion when combining highly conflicting evidences and shows similar results with Dempster's rule of combination in the case of the both sources of evidence are not conflicting. In addition, when obtained evidences contain multiple hypotheses, our proposed combination rule shows more logically acceptable results in compared with the results of Dempster's rule.

  • As software is developed for many applications and software defects have caused serious problem sin those applications, the concern of software quality evaluation increases rapidly. Although there has been many efforts for establishing standards for software evaluation, such as ISO/IEC 9126, they provide only a framework for defining quality characteristics and evaluation process. They, however, do not provide practical guidances for deriving resonable weight value criteria for software evaluation. This paper presents a method to draw quantitative weight values from evaluator's subjective data in the process of software evaluation as observing the ISO/IEC 9126 standard. To eliminate the evaluators' subjectiveness and the uncertainty of weight value during evaluation, the Dempster-Shafer (D-S) theory is adopted and utilized. In this paper, the D-S theory is supplemented with an improved merge rule to reduce the bias of weight value when they are merged with other evaluator's weight value. The proposed merge rule has been tested and proved with actual evaluation data.

  • This paper proposes a fuzzy decision making method for power transformer protection to identify an internal fault from other transient states such as inrush, over-excitation and an external fault with current transformer (CT) saturation. In this paper, analyzing over 300 EMTP simulations of disturbances, four input variables are selected and fuzzified. At every sampling interval from half to one cycle after a disturbance, from the EMPT simulations, different fuzzy rule base is composed of twelve if-then fuzzy rules associated with their basic probability assignments for singleton- or compound-support hypotheses. Dempster's rule of combination is used to process the fuzzy rules and get the final decision. A series of test results clearly indicate that the method can identify not only an internal fault but also the other transients. The average of relay operation times is about 12(ms). The proposed method is implemented into a Digital Signal Processor (TMS320C31) and tested.

  • In this paper, a conceptual framework of a new concept of protectability is proposed, which indicates the protection level of the system. Evaluation attributes have been identified and a hierarchical evaluation model has been established. Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence is applied in combining multiple uncertain judgements to produce an aggregated evaluation.

  • This paper develops a sensor based navigation method that utilizes fuzzy logic and the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory for mobile robot in uncertain environment. The proposed navigator consists of two behaviors: obstacle avoidance and goal seeking. To navigate reliably in the environment, we make a map building process before the robot finds a goal position and create a robust fuzzy controller. In this paper, the map is constructed on a two-dimensional occupancy grid. The sensor readings are fused into the map using D-S inference rule. Whenever the robot moves, it catches new information about the environment and replaces the old map with new one. With that process the robot can go wandering and finding the goal position. The usefulness of the proposed method is verified by a series of simulations. This paper deals with the fuzzy modeling for the complex and uncertain nonlinear systems, in which conventional and mathematical models may fail to give satisfactory results. Finally, we provide numerical examples to evaluate the feasibility and generality of the proposed method in this paper.

  • The various criteria to identify the disturbances of the power transformer has been reported in this paper. They have been derived through EMTP simulations of internal faults, inrush and overexcitation for the model of 154/22.9[kV], 40[MVA], Y-Y three-phase power transformer. We also propose the algorithm which makes bpa Functions and infers the final decision from them based on Modfied Dempster-Shafer's rule of combination.
