  • STEPSTONE is a joint industry-university project to create open source technology that would enable the scalable, "friction-free" integration of device-based healthcare solutions into enterprise systems using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Specifically, STEPSTONE defines a first proposal to a Service Oriented Device Architecture (SODA) framework, and provides for initial reference implementations. STEPSTONE also intends to encourage a broad community effort to further develop the framework and its implementations. In this paper, we present SODA, along with two implementation proposals of SODA's device integration. We demonstrate the ease by which SODA was used to develop an end-to-end personal healthcare monitoring system. We also demonstrate the ease by which the STEPSTONE system was extended by other participants - Washington State University - to include additional devices and end user interfaces. We show clearly how SODA and therefore SODA devices make integration almost automatic, replicable, and scalable. This allows telehealth system developers to focus their energy and attention on the system functionality and other important issues, such as usability, privacy, persuasion and outcome assessment studies.

  • This work discusses and evaluates the use of wireless and multi-sensor based technologies to develop UbiqBIOPARC, a new generation zoological park that has been created based on the zoo-immersion concept. It offers appropriate contextual information to zoo visitors, depending on their preferences and the environment in which they are positioned. It combines the flexibility of the iPhone SDK, the connectivity provided by 3G technologies, the location capabilities of GPS, and the orientation offered by a digital compass integrated in the device. In this document the overall architecture and the implementation steps followed to create this context-aware application are presented. We compare our system with respect to previous ones and demonstrate that UbiqBIOPARC is an example of how innovative context-aware applications can be built with the aid of GPS and compass features. Several real experiments have been carried out in order to evaluate performance and system behavior, and numerical results demonstrate the practicality offered by our application, while providing a quite reasonable performance in terms of delay, usability, and energy efficiency.

  • A novel imaging system for High-resolution Ultrasonic Transmission Tomography (HUTT) and soft tissue differentiation methodology for the HUTT system are presented. The critical innovation of the HUTT system includes the use of sub-millimeter transducer elements for both transmitter and receiver arrays and multi-band analysis of the first-arrival pulse. The first-arrival pulse is detected and extracted from the received signal (i.e., snippet) at each azimuthal and angular location of a mechanical tomographic scanner in transmission mode. Each extracted snippet is processed to yield a multi-spectral vector of attenuation values at multiple frequency bands. These vectors form a 3-D sinogram representing a multi-spectral augmentation of the conventional 2-D sinogram. A filtered backprojection algorithm is used to reconstruct a stack of multi-spectral images for each 2-D tomographic slice that allow tissue characterization. A novel methodology for soft tissue differentiation using spectral target detection is presented. The representative 2-D and 3-D HUTT images formed at various frequency bands demonstrate the high-resolution capability of the system. It is shown that spherical objects with diameter down to 0.3㎜ can be detected. In addition, the results of soft tissue differentiation and characterization demonstrate the feasibility of quantitative soft tissue analysis for possible detection of lesions or cancerous tissue.

  • In this paper, an integrated system for dynamic analysis and optimal design of engine mount systems is presented. The system can simulate static and dynamic behaviors of engine mount systems and optimize design parameters such as mount stiffness, mounting locations with desired design targets of frequency or displacement. A FF-engine with an automatic transmission is used to demonstrate the analysis and optimal design capabilities of the proposed design system.

  • As an approach to develope a control system with robustness in changing control environment conditions, this paper will propose a robot manipulator control system using multilayer neural network and immune algorithm. The proposed immune algorithm which has the characteristics of immune system such as distributed and anomaly detection, probabilistic detection, learning and memory, consists of the innate immune algorithm and the adaptive immune algorithm. We will demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system with simulations of a 2-link robot manipulator.

  • A space diversity technique was applied to the conventional optimal beamforming structure using antenna arrays at the base station receiver in the wireless mobile communication system to get performance enhancement due to interference rejection and fading resistance ability of it. To demonstrate the benefit of proposed system, we derived output signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of combined signal from all sub-array groups considering the fading effects and compared with the beamforming-only system. From the analysis and simulation results, we showed that the proposed system can provide high performance gain under Rayleigh fading channel.

  • This paper prescribe the effects of SVC & TCSC in multi-machine power system. EMTP models of two FACTS controllers are proposed to analysis the basic characteristics of SVC & TCSC and the control signal of TCR is determined by rms value which was measured in system. The oscillation model of generator is proposed to analysis the damping effect and the most effective location of TCSC in multi-machine power system is identified by the residues associated with the natural oscillation modes. The 3 generator-9 bus model system is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model.

  • This paper presents the development of a microcomputer-aided design program for a SISO control system. The program has been written in GWBASIC language which is suitable for Intel 80861 CPU with 640KB memory. By utilizing this program, sampling time, the number of bits for the A/D and D/A converter, and the stability for the digital control system can be determined. To demonstrate the utility of this program, a microcomputer controlled precision temperature control system has been employed as an example.

  • A feedback linearization controller for EMS system is implemented using DSP. In this paper, we show that given EMS system is input-state linearizable and satisfies some robustness condition. Also we derive feedback linearization controller for given system. Finally, some experiments are performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed controller-especially, comparing this with the classical state feedback controller using linear perturbation.
