  • Now a performance process of Demolition works is 'Before-Removal & After-Classification' method in Korea. This method is short of demolition time, but construction wastes contained substances lower recycling rate of construction, raise expenses of reclamation & treatment. Then the government has decided upon a positive 'Before-Classification & After-Removal' method, and substantially raise a recycling rate of construction wastes. Therefore, this study makes an investigation into state of internal and external demolition field through evaluating technological level, we make a proposal of dismantling method from there. Also, we put dismantling to the test in an apartment by proposed work process. As the result, it made a term of works increased for removing interior material. To solve this problem, we need to develop tools and methods of construction that can remove efficiently. From now on, we continuously need to study a breakdown system of dismantling, analysis of dismantling process and general system by inspecting entire demolition process. And we have to study details for making a specific thesis of method of removing interior material which was based on developing a suitable partial demolition machine and dismantling works.

  • The Gallery of Casa del Agua in Jeju Island was demolished by Jeju local government on March 6 in the last year. In the meanwhile, a lot of people including the architectural field had denied the demolition. Regardless of sustained efforts in order that the building could be preserved as a work, Jeju government ended up with demolishing the gallery. The Gallery of Casa del Agua was a temporary building constructed as a model house of Casa del Agua. As the remaining period of the temporary building had passed, it was on the verge of demolition by Jeju government. Casa del Agua is 'dwelling of water' in Korean, and the building was the last posthumous work of Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. Knowing from the expression of 'dwelling of water', this house is a dwelling work of him. Through this work, his architecture languages that he had pursued contained in dwelling could be looked into. This study examined the background and course of demolition of the Gallery of Casa del Agua, 'dwelling of water' and arranged problems in the course of demolition. Then, the fact that the Gallery of Casa del Agua as an architecture work of Ricardo Legorreta included his architecture languageswas analyzed. For this, his universalarchitecture languages were examined and how the architecture languages were applied to the Gallery of Casa del Agua was analyzed. As a result, it could be known that languages of composition and languages of emotion consistently shown in his works were represented in the Gallery of Casa del Agua.

  • Recently, construction techniques have been rapidly developed with reconstruction of old buildings, urban regeneration and efforts of restoring natural ecology, so demolition of deteriorated buildings has been rapidly increasing. Demolition work of building should be executed without damaging surrounding environments according to relevant regulations. There are various demolition methods and among them, explosives demolition is the most practical way for expenses and safety of work. As a part of Daejeon stream ecological restoration project, this thesis is a case of executing demolition of Chung-Ang Department Store which was built 35 years ago as covered structure on the upper part of Daejeon stream with explosives demolition. This structure is 8 stories high, total height of 41.6 m including basement floor, $1,650m^2$ for building area and $18,351m^2$ for total floor area. It is located in the center of Daejeon city where shopping centers and buildings are crowded and main facilities are Daejeon subway (18m), backside shopping center (20m), underground shopping center(15m), Mokchuk bridge, Eunjung bridge(0.25m) and fiber-optic cable(0.25m). In this project, implosion was selected for explosives demolition methods by considering this area being a busy urban area, and this project was executed after examining collapse movement of structure in advance using simulation program not to damage main facilities. Total 80kg of explosives and 1,000 detonators were being used. This project will be a good case of executing explosives demolition successfully by applying implosion on urban area in the country.

  • Investigation of the cause of the relatively recent building collapse accident in Gwangju revealed a lack of awareness about the safety of the dismantling construction system among stakeholders, in the form of issues such as illegal subcontracting, unauthorized design changes, and insufficient safety supervision. This study was conducted to analyze the safety interactions between the building dismantling construction system and the involved stakeholders and to propose ways to prevent accidents in related institutions and workplaces. AcciMap and STAMP-CAST analysis methods were used to evaluate safety interactions among the various stakeholders participating in building demolition work. Analysis results revealed that the collapse accident during the dismantling work was caused not only by structural causes occurring in the construction stage, but also by various causes throughout the system, such as the dismantling plan preparation stage and the construction permit stage. The results also revealed the need for proper implementation of safety control measures by various stakeholders to prevent collapse accidents during dismantling construction.

  • The importance of construction waste reusing and recycling is becoming increasingly large because the demolition industry is in current trend to pursue for sustainable growth. As the considering situation of the domestic housing construction and existing house, a scale of demolition industry is expected to be increased continuously. But the related cost regulations that are used in tendering in the demolition industry are insufficient, also the computer system for estimating the demolition costs have not been developed yet. Therefore, in this study suggests man-hours of 21EA items which are utilized to estimate demolition cost and work rate of $1.0m^3$ breaker which is used mostly in domestic demolition industry after analyzing a case study for deconstruction works. The computer system is developed for the estimating demolition cost easily, which are including five modules such as a project information, a unit cost management, a standard unit cost table, a bill of quantity, and a reporting system. This computer system is possible to apply for estimating cost of both mechanical demolition and blasting demolition. The biggest advantage of this system is to estimate cost to utilize standard WBS which is linked with standard unit table and each DB. This can help unskilled users use easily for it.

  • Demolition is mort dangerous than construction and causes a lot of harmful environmental factors. But temporary fences used on demolition sites cannot play out their roles of blocking harmful environmental factors or securing stability and work space. They only block the view from the outside. This study begins with the possibility that the temporary fence can be installed prior to demolition. As a preceding step. we performed research on the actual conditions of using it. We then realized that it can be installed according to our research plan. First, we focused on actualizing the integration of temporary fences for demolition and construction. Here are the results of this study. First, we need to grasp the limiting factors of integration. Second, we ought to revise the Korean Architecture Standard Specification. Third, we should prepare against damage and transformation of fences. Finally, we can expect to reduce harmful environmental factors, cut down expenses, improve the working environment and raise the image of demolition by the integration of these fences.

  • Background: Building demolition can lead to emission of dust into the environment. Exposure to silica dust may be considered as an important hazard in these sites. The objectives of this research were to determine the amount of workers' exposure to crystalline silica dust and assess the relative risk of silicosis and the excess lifetime risk of mortality from lung cancer in demolition workers. Methods: Four sites in the Tehran megacity region were selected. Silica dust was collected using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health method 7601 and determined spectrophotometrically. The Mannetje et al and Rice et al models were chosen to examine the rate of silicosis-related mortality and the excess lifetime risk of mortality from lung cancer, respectively. Results: The amount of demolition workers' exposure was in the range of $0.085-0.185mg/m^3$. The range of relative risk of silicosis related mortality was increased from 1 in the workers with the lowest exposure level to 22.64/1,000 in the employees with high exposure level. The range of the excess lifetime risk of mortality from lung cancer was in the range of 32-60/1,000 exposed workers. Conclusion: Geometric and arithmetic mean of exposure was higher than threshold limit value for silica dust in all demolition sites. The risk of silicosis mortality for many demolition workers was higher than 1/1,000 (unacceptable level of risk). Estimating the lifetime lung cancer mortality showed a higher risk of mortality from lung cancer in building demolition workers.

  • In this study, the pollutants contained in water and soil samples taken from the explosive demolition site were examined to investigate the effects on environment, and management plan of non-point source pollution in the demolition site was suggested through characterizing the movement of the pollutant with time. As results, pH value of the water and soil samples after the demolition work was 8.5~9.3 which exceeds the Korean environmental criterion of water and soil range due to calcium hydroxide compounds in the concrete. The concentration level of heavy metals caused by the explosive demolition doesn't exceed the environmental criterion of water and soil doesn't exceed the environmental criterion of water and soil quality, and the influence of water and soil pollution on the environment was not considered. The concentration of the heavy metals was analyzed and that of Cr, Cu, Zn and Hg among the heavy metals increased after the drilling and explosive demolition. This says that concentration of the heavy metals during explosive demolition works needs to be monitored. The most pollutants with time or rain dilution into the demolition site decreased and this means that the pollutants caused by the explosive demolition might have influenced to vicinity of the demolition sites as non-point pollution.
