A retrospective study on 72 dogs with demodicosis, presented to Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Chonnam National University between 1987 and 1996, is reported. About 18% of the dogs with skin disease had demodicosis. About 75% of the patients with demodicosis were purebred dogs, and the short-haired breeds had a much higher incidence than do long-haired breeds. The age of the patient ranged from 1 month to 3 years, and about 63% of the patients were less than a year of age. Sex and seasons have been shown to have no effect on the development of demodicosis. A hereditary predisposition of generalized demodicosis has been observed from an affected litter.
A 10-year-old castrated male Shih-tzu dog presented with a history of generalized demodicosis, refractory to conventional therapy with ivermectin and amitraz for a year. The patient was also diagnosed with concurrent deep pyoderma, Malassezia dermatitis, and otitis externa. Treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanate, antifungal drugs (itraconazole, miconazole), and milbemycin oxime resulted in a good response for 90 days. Approximately 4 months later, the first relapse of demodicosis occurred and the miticidal therapy was changed to ivermectin. Additional diagnostic tests were performed to investigate an underlying cause for the recurrence of demodicosis, and endocrinopathies and allergic dermatitis were excluded based on the results. Although ivermectin therapy was sustained for 440 days, a second relapse occurred and amitraz baths were added to the therapy. Despite this therapy, the demodicosis persisted, and the miticidal therapy was changed to oral fluralaner, which led to rapid resolution. Demodicosis did not recur again before death approximately 920 days after administration of oral fluralaner. This case report describes the complete resolution of refractory demodicosis using oral fluralaner in a dog.

A survey on the prevalence of heartworms, scabies and demodicosis of 1,011 pet dogs in 5 animal hospitals Jeonju area was peformed from June to October 2004. The result obtained from this experiment were summarized as follows; 1. The 1,011 pet dogs coming to help the animal hospital more than disease of pleonephritis 62($6.1\%$), enteritis 75($7.4\%$), dermatitis 62($6.1\%$), scabies 55($5.4\%$), heartworms 43($4.3\%$), tympanitis 41($4.1\%$), demodicosis 22($2.2\%$), gastritis 21($2.2\%$), fracture 9($0.9\%$), respectively. 2. The 307 examined pet dogs were heartworms antigen positive to 43($14.0\%$), Microfilaria 31($10.1\%$) and the kinds of mixed breeds 34 (antigen and Microfilaria 12), Jindo 19 (antigen 7, Microfilaria 6), respectively. 3. Heartworms antigen positive of examined 34 pet dogs mean ages 4.3 and general blood cell count mean of WBC $20.5{\times}10^3/mm^3$, RBC $61.3{\times}10^6/mm^3$ HGB $6.27g/d{\ell}$ HCT $20.9\%$, PLT $13.0{\times}10^3/mm^3$, MCV $33.2{\mu}m^3$, MCH 39.4pg, MCHC $14.8g/d{\ell}$, RDW $280.1\%$, MPV $9.2{\mu}m^3$, respectively. but showed a few high normal value WBC, MCV, MCH and a low MCHC. 4. This experiment was 1,011 pet dogs to dermatitis 139($13.7\%$) of scabies 55($39.6\%$), demodicosis 22($15.8\%$), respectively.
In order to obtain basic data concerning the treatment of canine demodicosis, 8 Doberman Pinschers were infected with Demodex canis. The clinical signs, were examined after infection, and their hematological and blood chemical values were determined, along with four non-infected control dogs of same breed. The number of white blood cells, especially the number of band neutrophils was significantly higher(p<0.01) in the infected than in the non-infected control dogs. This result indicated that the first episode of secondary infection should be treated with an appropriate antibiotics based on the culture and sensitivity test. The red blood cell counts, packed cell volume, hemoglobin contents, and serum albumin levels were significantly lower (p<0.01~0.001) in the infected than in the non-infected control dogs. These results suggested that the infected dogs had an anemia due to malnutrition. Thus, the infected dogs should be on a well balanced, high protein diet.
Therapeutic effect by injection-AP with antibiotics plus conventional treatment was investigated to establish a new treatment method for canine demodicosis. Three patients diagnosed into canine demodicosis were used in the present study. Injection-AP with enrofloxacin (5 mg/kg, twice a week) was made into the acupoints such as Fei Shu(BL13), Wei Zhong (BL40), Da Zhui (GV14), Zu San Li (ST36), He Gu (LI04), Qu Chi (LI11) and Sang Yin jiao(SP06) for 5 weeks. Further, they were additionally received with conventional treatments including injection of ivermectin (0.5 mg/kg, twice a week, SC) and 0.05% amitraz rinse (twice a week) for 5 weeks. The clinical symptoms (pruritus, excoriation, erythema and alopecia) were much improved by injection-AP therapy plus conventional treatment, compared by those of pre-treatment. Case 1 became to normal after 4 weeks, Case 2 became to mild after 5 weeks and Case 3 became to normal after 5 weeks. Total WBC revealed decreasing tendency with treatment in all cases, however, N/L ratios didn't show regular pattern of change with treatment. Notable changes were not histopathogically found in skin lesions of Case 1 and Case 3 except Case 2 with mild change after 5 weeks treatment, compared by those of pre-treatment, respectively. In conclusion, the present patients were cases with canine demodicosis which revealed favorable therapeutic response by injection-AP with antibiotics plus conventional treatment.
Inflammatory eyelid symptoms are common in primary care and there have been several reports on Demodex blepharitis. In the present study, we evaluate the 9 patients with Demodex blepharitis, who showed inflammation of the eyelids, dry eye, and cylindrical dandruff at the base of the eyelashes. The causative species from all patients was Demodex folliculorum of either the adult or nymph stage. Two patients had recurrent chalazion and 3 patients had keratitis. Weekly lid scrubs with 50% tee tree oil were performed for 6 weeks. After treatment, the symptoms of blepharitis and keratitis had improved in all patients. This case report provides clinical reference source for the proper treatment of ocular demodicosis.
An 11-year-old female Yorkshire terrier presented with alopecia, hyperpigmentation, and pruritus. Dermatological examination revealed a large number of Demodex mites including D. cornei and D. canis. Mean length of total body length of D. cornei was one third shorter than that of D. canis. In addition, sequential analysis of DNA extracted from the skin lesions showed a 97% and 99% identity with the two sequences of D. canis and D. cornei. This is the first report of a combined infestation of D. cornei and D. canis in Korea, along with its morphological and molecular characterization.
