  • This study is a descriptive study to investigate the factors influencing the level of cognitive function among elderly living alone according to the presence of dementia risk factors. We conducted a simple questionnaire, GDS-K and MMSE-DS tests to investigate the risk of dementia among 143 elderly people living alone in the community. The results showed that the major factors influencing the cognitive function of the elderly people living alone were education, age, depression status, smoking, leisure activities, and gender. In order to develop strategies for the prevention of dementia in the elderly people living alone, it is necessary to change lifestyle and provide various management methods to identify risk factors that negatively affect cognitive function and to help cognitive health.

  • Purpose: This study was done to compare demographic characteristics, comorbidity, and health habits of elders with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and elders with cognitively normal function (CNF). Methods: Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from the Database of the Seoul Dementia Management Project for 5,773 adults age 60 and above. Results: The MCI group showed an older age distribution, but there was no significant education difference between the two groups. Elders with MCI had more diabetes and stroke than elders with CNF. In subgroups, the same findings were observed in women, but not in men. While more men with MCI had hypertension compared to men with CNF, there was no significant difference in hypertension between the two groups for women. Elders with MCI, men in particular, had a lower prevalence of obesity than men with CNF. MCI individuals did less exercise compared to individuals with CNF. While there were no significant differences in alcohol consumption and smoking between MCI and CNF groups, the over 80's subgroup with MCI reported more alcohol consumption. Conclusion: Findings from this study could be helpful in designing community-based dementia prevention programs and health policies to reduce the prevalence of dementia or related cognitive impairments.

  • This study was undertaken to determine the correlation between β-amyloid, serum lipid levels, and cognitive function in the elderly with mild Alzheimer's dementia. The study was conducted in December 2018, enrolling 45 elderly people with mild Alzheimer's disease. Blood analysis measured the β-amyloid and serum lipid levels, and cognitive function was measured using MMSE-K. The correlation between β-amyloid, serum lipid levels and cognitive function was determined using Pearson's correlation analysis. A significantly negative correlation was observed between the β-amyloid level and cognitive function (p<0.05). Furthermore, serum lipid levels and cognitive function also revealed a significantly negative correlation between TC and LDL levels (p<0.05). These results indicate that increasing levels of β-amyloid, TC, and LDL augments a negative correlation that decreases the cognitive function, signifying that management of pathologic factors related to dementia is important for the prevention and improvement of cognitive function in dementia patients.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of home-based cognitive physico-occupational therapy(HBCPOT) on cognitive function, depression, and quality of life in dementia patients, using a cognitive impairment model. Methods: The data was analysed for Mini-Mental State Examination-Korean version (MMSE-KC) for assessing cognitive function, Quality of life-Alzheimer's Disease (QOL-AD) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) in 31 dementia patients who received home-based cognitive physico-occupational therapy for one hour once a week for 12 weeks by a trained occupational therapist at the Dementia Prevention and Management Center of Y-city during 20111-2013. Results: Among these 31 patients, 18(58.1%) were female, and 25(80.6%) had Alzheimer's Disease. After HBCPOT, the mean scores of MMSE-KC and QOL-AD were significantly improved, but GDS score was not significantly decreased. Conclusions: It was suggested that HBCPOT was effective in improving cognitive function and quality of life.

  • In this study, a dementia patient care monitoring system is suggested that uses a wearable type bluetooth beacon to prevent them from going missing. This system shows whether the patients stay within the manageable area and sends a warning message to their monitoring managers' or guardians' smart devices when they leave it. The feature of the system is that it provides the service based on indoor location that makes the beacon worn by dementia patients continuously transmit their location information to the managing server through the smart terminal installed indoors or in hospitals and that enables the monitoring managers or the guardians to receive messages sent from the server that tell the patients' whereabouts through their smart devices. The system suggested in this paper is believed to be a system that effectively contributes to the prevention of the dementia patients' going astray from the hospitals and facilities where they are taking care.

  • This study conducted a systematic review of evidence-based interventions to confirm the importance of gait in dementia patients and to inform the necessity of various interventions necessary for gait. Based on PRISMA's guidelines and evidence-based intervention, a systematic review were conducted, and papers published in domestic journals for the past 10years were collected, and the dependent variables measured along with the intervention type and gait were analyzed. For data search, research papers from January 2011 to June 2020 were collected through RISS, KISS, the National Library of Korea, and the Library of Congress. The main search terms were 'dementia patient', 'walking', and 'walking ability'. Searched 57 papers on dementia patients and gait that meet the literature selection criteria. Among them, papers overlapping with papers before 2010, papers whose dependent variable is not related to gait ability were excluded, and finally, other than dementia diseases. As for the type of gait intervention, there were many programs related to exercise such as fall prevention and physical activity, and the dependent variables measured along with gait were physically and psychologically diverse. Although domestic studies for dementia patients are conducted in a variety of directions and methods, there are few studies on the improvement of function and gait of the lower extremity part of the body. Therefore, it is necessary to study the multifaceted and various intervention methods for walking in dementia patients.

  • With the increasing elderly population in Korea, dementia has become a mojor health problem in Korea. Several studies have been conducted on the association between dementia and dietary intake, especially vitamin E and vitamin C. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of vitamin E and vitamin C supplementation on the decrease in cognitive function induced by scopolamine(300mg/kg) in rats. Rats were divided into three groups : control, vitamin C, and vitamin E supplementation(2.4g Vit C or Vit E /100g diet) and fed the diets for 6 weeks. There were significant decreases in active avoidance response and brain acetylcholinesterase activity in the control group, but no significant differences were observed in the vitamin E and C groups after scopolamine treatment. Brain dopamine concentration of vitamin E and C groups was significantly higher than those of control group after scopolamine injection. The concentrations of brain norepinephrine also showed similar tendence, even though it was not statistically significant. These results indicate that vitamin E and vitamin C may protect against the cognitive function decrease induced by scopolamine. However, it is still unclear how vitamin E and C influence brain neurotransmitters and improve cognitive function. Further study is need to elucidate the role of vitamin E and C supplementation in the prevention of dementia.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the beneficial effects of a new cognitive intervention program designed for the care and prevention of dementia, namely Learning Therapy. The training program used systematized basic problems in arithmetic and Japanese language as training tasks. In study 1, 16 individuals in the experimental group and 16 in the control group were recruited from a nursing home. In both groups, all individuals were clinically diagnosed with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type. In study 2, we performed a single-blind, randomized controlled trial in our cognitive intervention program of 124 community-dwelling seniors. In both studies, the daily training program using reading and arithmetic tasks was carried out approximately 5 days a week, for 15 to 20 minutes a day in the intervention groups. Neuropsychological measures were determined simultaneously in the groups both prior to and after six months of the intervention. The results of our investigations indicate that our cognitive intervention using reading and arithmetic problems demonstrated a transfer effect and they provide convincing evidence that cognitive training maintains and improves the cognitive functions of dementia patients and healthy seniors.
