In Korea it tends to rely on foreign standards for the stability management of the embankment slope on the soft clay layer. The Matsuo-Kawamura's method, the Kurihara's method, the Tominaga- Hashimoto's method and the Shibata-Sekiguchi's method are generally employed at site. In this study these slope stability methods are investigated and the applicability of the stability management methods is evaluated through numerical analysis. It is evaluated that stability is overestimated to some degree by the Matsuo-Kawamura method. According to the result by the Tominaga-Hashimoto method there is some risk of sudden failure. This implies that the careful attention is necessary for the management of monitoring the field data. Even though the stability tends to be underestimated by the Kurihara's method, however, it is estimated that this method is applicable to the field when the probable uncertainty at site is considered. For the Shibata-Sekiguchi's method, there is some difficulties in determining the failure index for the practical application, it is considered as safe when the existing estimated failure index is greater than ${\Delta}_q/{\Delta}{\delta}$. In this study, however, it is evaluated to be safe as well when ${\Delta}_q/{\Delta}{\delta}$ to load shows the tendency of constant increase.
Hypermaps are cellular embeddings of hypergraphs in compact and connected surfaces, and are a generalisation of maps, that is, 2-cellular decompositions of closed surfaces. There is a well known correspondence between hypermaps and co-compact subgroups of the free product $\Delta=C_2*C_2*C_2$. In this correspondence, hypermaps correspond to conjugacy classes of subgroups of $\Delta$, and hypermap coverings to subgroup inclusions. Towards the end of [9] the authors studied regular hypermaps with extra symmetries, namely, G-symmetric regular hypermaps for any subgroup G of the outer automorphism Out$(\Delta)$ of the triangle group $\Delta$. This can be viewed as an extension of the theory of regularity. In this paper we move in the opposite direction and restrict regularity to normal subgroups $\Theta$ of $\Delta$ of finite index. This generalises the notion of regularity to some non-regular objects.

Diagnostic tests were performed on two high voltage(HV) motor stator windings. These tests included the measurement of insulation resistance, polarization index, AC current, dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$) and partial discharge(PD) magnitude. Surface contamination of HV motor stator windings has an effect on the AC current and $tan{\delta}$. When the stator windings were finished cleaning and insulation reinforcement, the increase rate of AC current(${\Delta}I$) and dissipation factor(${\Delta}tan{\delta}$) were very small compared to those before cleaning. However, the PD magnitude remained the same. These tests show that cleaning and insulation reinforcement of HV motor stator windings can reduce the insulation failure.
In this study, an interpretation method is proposed to evaluate the stress conditions, including individual excess pore pressure components ($\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$), of normally consolidated clay elements adjacent to the cone face. It is assumed that the stress path of triaxial compression is representative f3r that of the soil element and the soil is elastic-perfectly plastic material. The proposed method is applied to the results of miniature piezocone tests conducted at Louisiana State University calibration chamber system. Based on the results of interpretation, it was found that the ratio of $\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ $\Delta{u}$and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$/$\Delta{u}$ estimated by the proposed method is affected only by the pore pressure parameter. The proposed method gives consistent and reliable values of $\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ $\Delta{u}$and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$/$\Delta{u}$ compared with early works, whereas those obtained by other solutions are significantly dependent on the accuracy in estimating soil properties such as undrained shear strength and rigidity index.
In this study, we aimed to identify the factors influencing post-fire mortality in Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) using Cox's proportional hazards model and analyze the impact of these factors. We monitored the mortality rate of fire-damaged pine trees for seven years after a forest fire. Our survival analysis revealed that the risk of mortality increased with higher values of the delta normalized difference vegetation index (dNDVI), delat normalized burn ratio (dNBR), bark scorch index (BSI), bark scorch height (BSH) and slope. Conversely, the risk of mortality decreased with higher elevation, greater diameter at breast height (DBH), and higher value of delta moisture stress index (dMSI) (p < 0.01). Verification of the proportional hazards assumption for each variable showed that all factors, except slope aspect, were suitable for the model and significantly influenced fire occurrence. Among the variables, BSI caused the greatest change in the survival curves (p < 0.0001). The environmental change factors determined through remote sensing also significantly influenced the survival rates (p < 0.0001). These results will be useful in establishing restoration plans considering the potential mortality risk of Korean red pine after a forest fire.

Recently, much attention has been paid to problems which is concerned with voltage instability phenomena and much works on these phenomena have been made. In this paper, by substituting d $P_{k}$ d $e_{k}$ ( $v^{\rarw}$= e +j f) for $P_{k}$ in conventional load flow, direct method for finging the limit of voltage stability is proposed. Here, by using the fact that taylor se- ries expansion in .DELTA. $P_{k}$ and .DELTA. $Q_{k}$ is terminated at the second-order terms, constraint equation (d $P_{k}$ d $e_{k}$ =0) and power flow equations are formulated with new variables .DSLTA. e and .DELTA.f, so partial differentiations for constraint equation are precisely calculated. The fact that iteratively calculated equations are reformulated with new variables .DELTA.e and .DELTA.f means that limit of voltage stability can be traced precisely through recalculation of jacobian matrix at e+.DELTA.e and f+.DELTA.f state. Then, during iterative process divergence may be avoid. Also, as elements of Hessian mat rix are constant, its computations are required only once during iterative process. Results of application of the proposed method to sample systems are presented. (author). 13 refs., 11 figs., 4 tab.
The ${\Delta}\;V_{10}$ or 10-Hz flicker index, as a common method of measurement of voltage flicker severity in power systems, requires a high computational cost and a large amount of memory. In this paper, for measuring the ${\Delta}\;V_{10}$ index, a new method based on the Adaline (adaptive linear neuron) system, the FFT (fast Fourier transform), and the PSO (particle swarm optimization) algorithm is proposed. In this method, for reducing the sampling frequency, calculations are carried out on the envelope of a power system voltage that contains a flicker component. Extracting the envelope of the voltage is implemented by the Adaline system. In addition, in order to increase the accuracy in computing the flicker components, the PSO algorithm is used for reducing the spectral leakage error in the FFT calculations. Therefore, the proposed method has a lower computational cost in FFT computation due to the use of a smaller sampling window. It also requires less memory since it uses the envelope of the power system voltage. Moreover, it shows more accuracy because the PSO algorithm is used in the determination of the flicker frequency and the corresponding amplitude. The sensitivity of the proposed method with respect to the main frequency drift is very low. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by simulations. The validity of the simulations is proven by the implementation of the algorithm with an ARM microcontroller-based digital system. Finally, its function is evaluated with real-time measurements.
The universality of the quasi-linear relation between the order parameter S and the normalized birefringence ${\Delta}n_{rel}$, $S=(1+a){\Delta}n_{rel}-a{\Delta}n^2_{rel}$ is confirmed. It is verified that the refractive index of liquid crystals distributed with regular polyhedral symmetry is isotropic and it is given as $\frac{1}{n^2_{av}}=\frac{1}{3}\(\frac{1}{n^2_e}+\frac{2}{n^2_o}\){\cdot}S$ and ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ of angular weighted liquid crystals that are initially distributed with regular polyhedral symmetry, are numerically calculated. Also ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ and S of liquid crystals that are conically distributed, keeping the rotational symmetry about z-axis are calculated as the apex angle of the cone is varied. Based on these calculated results, it is confirmed that the quasi-linear relation between S and ${\Delta}n_{rel}$ is universal, independent of the details of the distribution function.

This paper proposes an optimal load shedding algorithm by which the system loss can be minimized when the load shedding is unavoidable in case of severe contingency such as the outage of key generators or lines. Shedding load .DELTA.S = .DELTA.P + J.DELTA.Q(MVA) is performed on the weakest bus (on the view of voltage stability), step by step, by the priority of the I.DELTA. = SQRT(.lambda.$\_$P/$\^$2/ + .lambda.$\_$Q/$\^$2/) index given for each load bus, where .lambda.$\_$P/ and .lambda.$\_$Q/ are the sensitivity indices representing the system loss variation versus active and reactive power change of the bus load bus. All loads are assumed to be constant power loads for convenience. A 5 bus sample system proves the effectiveness of the algorithm proposed.

As the number of compound cavity modes within the stopband of DFB sections decreases, the frequency of mode hopping decreases for the variation of $\Delta$λ$_{B}$, which represents the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of two DFB sections, so that the number of abrupt changes of pulsation frequencies decreases. In addition, the pulsation frequency varies continuously for the variation of the phase in a phase tuning section for a fixed $\Delta$λ$_{B}$. The number of compound cavity modes within the stopband decreases as the length of DFB sections increases and the length of a phase tuning section decreases. Thus stable self-pulsation operations for the variation of $\Delta$λ$_{B}$ and the phase in a phase tuning section could be obtained by proper selection of the coupling strength and the length of each section.ction.
