Hip Muscle Strength and Ratio Differences in Delivery Workers With and Without Iliotibial Band Syndrome

  • Background: Delivery workers repeatedly get in and out of trucks and walk or run to deliver packages during work. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a well-known non-traumatic overuse injury of the lateral side of the knee caused by frequent knee flexion and extension. Hip muscle strength is among the factors that prevent lower extremity injuries. Although many studies have examined the relationship between ITBS and hip muscle strengths, there was no study comparing hip muscle strength and ratio between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Objects: This study aimed to compare hip muscle strength and hip internal/external rotator and adductor/abductor strength ratios between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Methods: Fourteen delivery workers with ITBS matched inclusion criteria in the present study among 20 participants. Because total sample size was required 28 subjects by G*power program (ver. 3.1.9.4; University of Trier), 14 delivery workers without ITBS were recruited. Hip muscle strengths were measured in a side-lying position using a Smart KEMA pulling sensor (KOREATECH Co. Ltd.). An independent t-test was used to compare hip muscle strengths and hip internal/external rotator and hip adductor/abductor strength ratios between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Results: The adductor/abductor strength ratio was significantly greater in delivery workers without ITBS than in those with ITBS (p < 0.05). The strengths of the hip abductor, hip adductor, hip internal rotator, hip external rotator, and the ratio of internal/external rotator strengths were not significantly different between the delivery workers with and without ITBS (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study's findings showed that delivery workers with ITBS had significantly lesser adductor/abductor strength ratio, while the strengths of the hip abductor and adductor muscles did not differ significantly. These results suggest that adductor/abductor strength ratio should be considered when evaluating and treating ITBS in delivery workers.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify differences in physical working environments, psychosocial working environments, and health outcomes according to the employment type of delivery workers. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of data collected from the Fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS). Participants were 84 Korean delivery workers. Data were analyzed using the SAS 9.4 Version, χ2 test and Fisher's exact test. Results: Statistically significant differences were found according to the employment type of delivery workers (special types, wage) including "noise", "vibrations", "repetitive movements", "supervisor support", "colleague support", "manuals on emotional expression", "existence of trade union, works council or similar body". Conclusion: This study suggests the necessity of improving the working environment and health outcomes of delivery workers belonging to special employment types. In developing these, the laws and systems must be reorganized to enable the recognition of delivery workers as wage workers. In addition, delivery companies should be held responsible for managing delivery workers.

Characteristics of Motorcycle Crashes of Food Delivery Workers

  • Objective: This study aims to understand the motorcycle accident characteristics of food delivery workers and to present basic guidelines on accident prevention through accident. Background: It is known that food delivery workers have a high ratio of self-employed and youth workers, and occupations with frequent disasters. Therefore the occupation is known to really be in need of accident prevention policy. Method: This study analyzed the data of motorcycle crashes of 1,310 food delivery workers that have been approved as on-duty industrial crashes since 2015. The accident characteristics were examined by dividing them into driver related factors and accident related factors. Results: Among the motorcycle crashes of food delivery workers, 99.2% of the victims were males, 82.6% had less than six months of work experience. 76.2% of the victims were employed by the companies with less than five workers. In addition, there was a difference in accident characteristics according to age, type of cuisine, accident time of the day, injured organs and injured body part. Conclusion: The results of this study can be used as baseline data to devise systematic measures to prevent motorcycle crashes of food delivery workers. Application: Preventative measures for novice young part time workers including safety education/training need to be established.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of risk awareness on injury experience in quick delivery service workers. Risk awareness has complicate characteristics such as its level of worker and worker's decision about the level of other's risk perception. Data were collected by interview survey with structured questionnaire about injury experience, risk perception, work characteristics, and socio-demographic characteristics of quick delivery service workers by cross sectional survey design in 2012. The sample size was 120 respondent of quick delivery service workers. Statistical method for this study was hierarchical logistic regression method with 3 different models using socio-demographic characteristics and work characteristics and risk perception, etc. The difference between the level of risk perception of quick delivery service and other's was statistically significant effect on the experience of injury. Especially the higher the level of risk perception of quick delivery service workers is than other's, the lower the injury experience of quick delivery service worker is. The limitation of this study can be found in survey design. The future study for investigation of mechanism of the combined effect of risk perception of quick delivery service workers and others on injury experience.

종사상 지위별 음식 배달 종사자의 이륜차 산업재해 특성 분석 (Characteristic Analysis of Occupational Motorcycle Accidents for Food Delivery Workers by Employment Status)

  • This study analyzes the characteristics of occupational accidents of food delivery via motorcycle in terms of accident probability and work-days. Depending on their employment status, food-delivery workers were divided into "employed" workers (who work for restaurants) and "special-type" workers (who work for delivery platforms). Collected data include occupational accident-information during the last two years (1,468 cases for employed workers and 4,899 cases for special-type workers) and their risk information such as age, work experience, accident location, season of the accident, and weather conditions. The study finds that special-type workers had a significantly higher accident probability for the younger age group (80.8%), while employed workers had more accidents in both 20's or younger (34.9%) and 50's or older (25.4%). The number of work-days-lost was higher for special-type workers with less work experience, and it decreased with increasing work experience. Moreover, the chance for accidents was higher at night time (55%) than for day time (45%) for special-type workers as well as for employed workers. The number of work-days-lost was higher in foreign workers (180.79 days) than in Korean workers (121.44 days). Accident probability (30.7%) and work-days-lost (136.2 days) was higher in winter than in other seasons. In addition, accidents-per-day was higher on snowy days (12.7 cases per day) than rainy (8.1) and windy days (7.1). In addition, it was found that deadly accidents mainly caused injuries to face, head, and chest, while non-deadly accidents affected mainly the legs and feet. This study enables the development of better policies to prevent accidents of food delivery workers.

배달종사자 대상 안전교육이 사고 예방에 미치는 영향 요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Influence Fators of Safety Education for Delivery Workers on Accident Prevention)

  • 배달서비스 시장이 지속해서 증가함에 따라 배달종사자의 수도 증가하였으나, 그에 상응하는 안전교육은 미흡한 상황이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 배달종사자의 안전교육, 안전 인식, 사고 경험 횟수 및 안전 행동 간의 상호 연관성을 파악하여 안전교육의 중요성을 설명하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 배달종사자 커뮤니티 사이트의 도움을 받아 배달종사자 총 114명을 대상으로 배달종사자 안전교육의 실태에 관해 설문 조사를 하였다. 연관성 분석 결과, 일반 대행사 종사자 중 절반 이상이 안전교육을 받지 않았다고 응답했고 안전교육을 이수한 배달 종사자가 안전교육을 이수하지 않은 배달종사자보다 안전 행동의 빈도가 2.36배 높았다. 또한 상관분석과 단순 회귀분석을 통해 안전교육이 배달종사자의 안전 인식에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며 안전 인식과 안전 행동 간에 유의한 상관관계가 있다는 것이 도출되었다. 이를 통해 안전교육과 안전 인식, 안전행동 및 사고 경험 횟수 간의 관계성을 알아내었고 사고 예방을 위해 모든 배달 플랫폼에서 의무적으로 안전교육을 시행하도록 해야 한다는 결론을 도출하였다.

Customized Safety Information Delivery System for Unskilled Construction Worker Training

  • Accidents at construction sites in Korea account for more than half of all industrial accidents. To solve this problem, a policy to strengthen safety education was implemented to ensure the safety of workers. However, it was analyzed that there is a high possibility of accidents because workers did not receive proper safety information for each risk factor due to general lecture-style education. In addition, statistics show that the accident status of workers with fewer years of period is high, indicating that a customized information delivery method needs to be proposed for unskilled workers with fewer years of period. Research on the importance of education has been conducted, but no information delivery method has been identified. For unskilled workers to effectively receive safety information, appropriate delivery formats (text, photos, illustrations, 4D-BIM, 360-based panorama, video, animation) were analyzed, and a new method of education was proposed. If customized safety information is provided according to this proposal, effective information delivery to unskilled workers will be possible, and it is expected to be verified in various ways.

플랫폼 배달종사자의 안전인식이 중대재해에 미치는 영향 연구 (The Impact of Platform Delivery Workers' Safety Awareness on Serious Accidents Impact Studies)

  • In this study, delivery workers were regarded as workers and industrial accident and serious accident prevention were studied. As a result of the study, first, it was confirmed that awareness of safety guidelines has an effect on disaster prevention and is related to reducing serious accidents. Second, among the forms of organizational culture, rational culture was shown to have a positive impact on serious accidents. Third, the moderating effect of organizational culture Rational culture, a sub-concept, was found to have a moderating effect on serious accidents. Fourth, according to the opinions of workers for disaster prevention of delivery workers, it was classified into policy part, environmental part, and worker's duty part, and the necessity of strengthening safety education and strong regulation was suggested in the policy part.

배달 플랫폼 종사자를 위한 안전관리 개선방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Improvement of Safety Management for Delivery Platform Workers)

  • 연구목적: 본 연구에서는 배달 플랫폼 종사자들을 위험으로부터 보호하기 위해 안전관리 개선 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 연구방법: 배달 플랫폼 종사자들을 보호하기 위해 국내와 국외에서 실시하고 있는 안전 관련 법제도 및 사례를 찾아 분석하였고, 배달 플랫폼 종사자들을 대상으로 설문을 진행하여 도출된 통계 결과와 국내·외 법제도 및 사례들을 분석하고 비교하여 안전관리 개선방안을 제시하였다. 연구결과: 국내에서는 배달 플랫폼 종사자의 안전을 위해 실시하고 있는 법의 내용에서 기상악화에 대한 안전대책이 명확하게 제시되지 않았고 설문조사 결과 안전교육 또한 완벽하게 이루어지지 않고 있는 것으로 확인되었으며 배달 도중 앱이나 프로그램을 통해 호출을 받아 대다수가 사고를 경험한 것으로 확인되었다. 결론: 본 연구를 통해 배달 플랫폼 종사자들을 위한 안전관리 개선 방안을 제시할 수 있었지만 이륜차와 관련된 상세한 설문 항목은 조사하지 않았기 때문에 배달 플랫폼 종사자들이 주 운송수단으로 사용하고 있는 이륜차로 인해 발생할 수 있는 다양한 사고 결과를 확인할 수 없어 이륜차를 사용하여 배달할 경우 발생할 수 있는 사고에 대한 안전관리 개선방안은 제시할 수 없었다.

  • To investigate the work-relatedness of carpal tunnel syndrome of some workers at packing department in a rayon manufacturing company, reseracher studied the symptoms and physical sign related to carpal tunnel syndrome of the workers at packing, ysrning, and washing department. The results are as follows: 1. By the results of ergonomic study, the packing work had the considerable probability to develop the carpal tunnel syndrome. 2. The prevalences of symptoms, physical sign and case by definition were higher in woman workers than in man workers. 3. In female workers, the age-agjusted prevalence rates of symptoms were 11.6/1, 000 in workers at washing department, 111.6/1, 000 in workers at packing department, and 70.1/1, 000 in workers at yarning department. In male workers, the age- adjusted rates of symptoms were 92.1/1, 000 in workers at washing department, 210.1/1, 000 in workers at packing and delivery department, and 0.0/1, 000 in workers at yarning department. 4. In female workers, the age-adjusted prevalence rates of physical signs were 119.5/1, 000 in workers at washing department, 104.4/1, 000 in workers at packing department, and 84.5 in workers at yarning department. In male workers, the age-adjusted rates of physical signs were 65.7/1, 000 in workers at washing department, 59.0/1, 000 in workers at packing and delivery department, and 176.9/1, 000 in workers at yarning department. 5. In female workers, the age- adjusted prevelence rates of carpal tunnel cases by case definition were 123.1/1, 000 in workers at washing department, 1117.2/1, 000 in workers at packing department, and 60.2/1, 000 in workers at yarning department. In male workers, the age-adjusted of cases were 355.9/1, 000 in workers at packing and delivery department, and 0.0/1, 000 in workers at other two departments. 6. The most of female workdrs at washing departmentn had the work history at packing department. 7. We concluded the carpal tunnel syndrome of female workers at packing department were work related.
