  • In multi-path wireless channels with time-variant delay profile, a mobile station measures the received signal strength and report it to network which performs network control function such as handover. In order to improve the maximum ratio combining (MRC) gain, it also should search the strongest signal paths and measure their time offsets fast and exactly. This paper proposes some methods of fast and exactly measuring the multi-path signal strength and time offset. Since the W-CDMA system adopts antenna diversity technique for the next generation high speed packet access (HSDPA) service, we derive the optimum design parameter values for the proposed methods through computer simulations under the HSDPA conditions o( low speed of mobile, of no power control, and of multi-path wireless environment with transmit and receive antenna diversity. Finally, we prove the validity of the proposed methods by showing the improvement of the bit error rate (BER) performance.

  • It is very important to analyze and predict the propagation characteristics of LEO communication satellite at the service area using computer simulation. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of a satellite communication system are analyzed using ray tracing technique. We predicted the receiving environment and obtain the delay profile and total received power at each position using ray tracing method by changing both the azimuth and elevation angles after establishing the imaginary receiving space. The final goal of this paper is to analyze and understand the wave propagation characteristics of the satellite communication network about 2 GHz frequency band. The prediction method presented in this paper may help us to design satellite transceiver system and to construct a satellite communication network.

  • Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder that is considered, especially on child, to cause poor feeding, hypotonia, failure to thrive, developmental delay and hypogonadism which is known to affect between 1 in 10,000 and 30,000 people. The children with PWS are viewed as affected by growth hormone (GH) insufficiency, although the exact mechanisms of GH deficiency are not fully understood. However, the benefits of GH treatment in children with PWS are well established. Myers, et al. (2006), Grugni, et al. (2016) indicated its positive effects on linear growth, body composition, motor function, respiratory function and psychomotor development. Despite of its effectiveness and advantages had been well known and proven in many other studies, there is only one recombinant GH product that is approved for PWS in Korea, $Genotropin^{(R)}$, till now. A phase III clinical study of GH treatment with $Eutropin^{TM}$, in 34 Korean PWS children is in progress, which is expected to have comparable effects and safety profile with the active control by assessing auxological changes such as height standard deviation score, body composition changes such as lean body mass and percent body fat, motor and cognitive development using Bayley scale, and safety profiles.

  • Currently, CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) plate bonding is used quite extensively as a strengthening method. In this technique, a composite CFRP plate or sheet of relatively small thickness is bonded with an adhesion material to steel or concrete structure in order to improve its structural behavior and strength. The sheets or plates do not require much space and give a composite action between the adherents. In this study, the rotation capacity of CFRP-strengthened cold-formed steel (CFS) beams has been evaluated through numerical investigation. Studies on different structural levels have been performed. At the beam level, C-section has been adopted with different values of profile thickness, web height, and flange width. At the connection level, a web bolted moment resistant type of connection using through plate has been adopted. In web-bolted connections without CFRP strengthening, premature web buckling results in early loss of strength. Hence, CFRP sheets and plates with different mechanical properties and geometric configurations have been examined to delay web and flange buckling and to produce relatively high moment strength and rotation capacity. The numerical results reveal that CFRP strengthening may increase strength, initial stiffness, and rotation capacity when compared with the case without strengthening.

  • The most numerical investigations of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena following the loss of the residual heat removal capability during the mid-loop operation of the pressurized water reactor were performed according to simplifications and are not sufficiently accurate. To perform more accurate and more reliable predictions of thermal-hydraulic accidents in a nuclear power plant using computational fluid dynamics codes, a more detailed methodology is needed. Modelling results identified that thermal stratification and natural convection are observed. Temperatures of lower monitoring points remain low, while temperatures of upper monitoring points increase over time. The water in the heated region, in the upper unheated region and the pipe region was well mixed due to natural convection, meanwhile, there is no natural convection in the lower unheated region. Water temperature in the pipe region increased after a certain time delay due to circulation of flow induced by natural convection in the heated and upper unheated regions. The modelling results correspond to the experimental data. The developed computational fluid dynamics methodology could be applied for modelling of two-component single/two-phase natural convection and thermal stratification phenomena during the mid-loop operation of the pressurized water reactor or other nuclear and non-nuclear installations at similar conditions.

  • We present a quantitative analysis of the relationship between the gas dynamics and star formation history of DDO 210 which is an irregular dwarf galaxy in the local Universe. We perform profile analysis of an high-resolution neutral hydrogen (HI) data cube of the galaxy taken with the large Very Large Array (VLA) survey, LITTLE THINGS using newly developed algorithm based on a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique. The complex HI structure and kinematics of the galaxy are decomposed into multiple kinematic components in a quantitative way like 1) bulk motions which are most likely to follow the underlying circular rotation of the disk, 2) non-circular motions deviating from the bulk motions, and 3) kinematically cold and warm components with narrower and wider velocity dispersion. The decomposed kinematic components are then spatially correlated with the distribution of stellar populations obtained from the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting method. The cold and warm gas components show negative and positive correlations between their velocity dispersions and the surface star formation rates of the populations with ages of < 40 Myr and 100~400 Myr, respectively. The cold gas is most likely to be associated with the young stellar populations. Then the stellar feedback of the young populations could influence the warm gas. The age difference between the populations which show the correlations indicates the time delay of the stellar feedback.

  • The congenital missing of mandibular second premolars is among the common dental anomaly in children. When a second premolar is diagnosed as congenitally missed, we should consider many factors influencing the treatment plan such as patient's age, states of roots of 2nd primary molar, degree of crowding, skeletal growth pattern, facial profile, procumbency of the incisor and lower facial height, etc. The mineralization of the second premolars begins in the majority of cases at the age of $2\sim2\frac{1}{2}$ years, but this period varies more widely than those for other permanent teeth. Also, mandibular second premolars show the greatest variations in differentiation and calcification. For this reason, aplasia of this group of teeth cannot be diagnosed at early age and with the same degree of certainty. From the clinical studies with 2 cases and some literature review on late development of second premolars, it could be summarized as follows : 1. The 2 cases showed marked delay in the development of mandibular second premolars. 2. After the crypt formation, the speed of calcification seemed nearly normal, suggesting that the delay was due to differentiation rather than calcification. 3. When one is encountered with similar conditions, it would be desirable to consider the possibility of delayed tooth development.

  • In this paper we analyze the performance of an adaptive sector cell system, which is adopted to maintain the traffic balance between sectors and to utilize the cell resources effectively, using the data collected from real channel environments. In the data measurements, we transmitted the QPSK modulated signal with carrier frequency of 1.95GHz and received the signals using the 8x4 array antenna equipped on the top of buildings in the urban area. We analyzed the angular distribution and the delay spread of a user signal and analyzed angular distribution of mobile users in a cell using the collected data. Also, we propose the vector channel modeling using the estimated pdf(probability distribution function) of the analyzing results. Through the proposed channel modeling the improvement of the call blocking rate was analyzed when using the adaptive sector cell system, and computer simulations show that the call blocking rate of the adaptive sector cell system was much lower than that of the fixed sector cell system. Additionally, it shows that the call blocking rate increases severely in the fixed sector cell system while the difference of the call blocking rate was smaller in the adaptive sector cell system, as the user density of the spatial distribution increases.

  • In this paper, we have carried out the DS/CDMA with a suppressed pilot channel, which is used in receiving coherently with Rake diversity and in synchronizing the chip timing, in the mobile satellite communication. Also, we have investigated the envelope variation of a shadowed Rician fading simulator, and analyzed the error performences of DS/CDMA in the mobile satellite communication. The results showed that the error performance in the Heavy shadowing environment might be degraded more than in the Rayleigh fading environment since the fading envelopes in the former environment are varied randomly compared with those in the latter environment. And the performence of DS/CDMA system could be improved about 10 dB compared with that of narrowband QPSK system. In conclusion, DS/CDMA with a suppressed pilot channel had the best performance in the case of the suppressed pilot channel to transmission power ratio $\beta$=-8 dB, the number of complex delay profiles $N_{profile}$=32, and using these values, the error performance of DS/CDMA in Light shadowing environment was identical to the ideal QPSK error performance.
