An Analysis on the Competitiveness of the Oil Refinery Market in South Korea

  • This study analyzes the degree of competition in the oil refinery market in Korea, which is considered an oligopoly market. The price of gasoline and diesel and the quantity of supply are used to identify the market competition. We also analyze whether the oil tax reduction policy has affected market competition. The competitiveness of the market was examined using monthly data from 2008 to 2019. Bresnahan-Lau method was employed to estimate the degree of competition in the oil refinery market, which is frequently used in the industrial studies. The analysis shows that the gasoline and diesel markets seem close to a perfect competitive market. Also, the tax cut has weakened market competition. In other words, the monopolistic power has increased in the market, so consumers have not benefit from the price cuts as much as tax cuts. Although the oil refinery market where four major companies are competing, the government's monitoring and price disclosure system help the market to be highly competitive as much as a perfect competition market. The tax cut, in the high oil price era, has a negative effect on the competition because of an information asymmetry about the price-setting process between suppliers and consumers.

임목(林木)의 개체간(個體間) 경쟁효과(競爭効果) 추정(推定)에 대한 고찰(考察) (Studies on Competition between Individual Trees of Larix leptolepis Gordon)

  • 본(本) 조사(調査)는 낙엽송(落葉松) 인공성림지(人工成林地)에서, 간벌(間伐)이 가(加)해진 임분(林分)과 가(加)해지지 않은 고정표본구(固定標本區)에서 임목(林木) 개체간(個體間)의 생장상관(生長相關)을 가지고 개체간(個體間)의 경쟁효과(競爭効果)를 알아 보기 위하여 실시(實施)하였다. 1) 조사(調査)는 흉고부위(胸高部位)에서 increment borer에 의하여 채취(採取)된 core에서 연년생장(連年生長)과 총생장(總生長)을 조사(調査)하고 이에 의하여 인접임목개체간(隣接林木個體間)의 상관관계(相關關係)를 계산(計算)해서 확인(確認)하였다. 2) 경쟁효과(競爭効果)의 추정방법(推定方法)은 (1)$^rA_iA_j$, (2)$^rA_i\sum\limits_{k=1}^{n}A_k$, (3)$^rA_i\sum\limits_{k=1}^{n}A_k/R{_k}^2$을 사용(使用)했으며 이 방법(方法) 중(中)에서 $^rA-A_j$가 실용적(實用的)이었다. 3) 상관관계(相關關係)에 사용(使用)된 생장량(生長量)은 반경(半徑)과 단면적(斷面績)의 총생장량(總生長量)을 이용하였으며, 이들 생장량(生長量)의 상관(相關)에서 경쟁(競爭)이 일어나는 정도(程度)를 추정(推定)했다. 4) 식재후(植栽後) 10년까지는 상호경쟁(相互競爭)이 일어나지 않고 인접개체간(隣接個體間)의 상관(相關)은 높은 정(正)의 상관(相關)을 나타냈다. 5) 10년(年) 이후는 매년(每年) 상호(相互) 경쟁(競爭)이 일어나기 시작하다가 13~14년경(年頃)에는 심한 경쟁(競爭)이 일어나고 있는데, 이는 상관계수(相關係數)가 급격히 낮은 수치(數値)로 떨어짐으로써 알 수 있다. 6) 간벌림(間伐林)의 간벌후(間伐後)의 생장(生長)은 인접임목간(隣接林木間)에 제약(制約)없이 정상적(正常的)인 생장(生長)을 나타냈다.

기업환경과 제휴성공요인에 대한 섬유업체들의 인식 (Perceptions of Textile Companies on Business Environments and Alliance Success Factors)

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the alliance success factors (ASF) and the business environments (BE) from the textile companies' viewpoint, to examine the differences in ASF and BE by firm characteristics, and to examine the relationships between BE and ASF. BE included the degree of market competition and the firm's competitive advantage, and firm characteristics included type of business, the number of employees, and length of business operation. Data were obtained from 155 textile companies in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions in Korea via a questionnaire survey. Four factors including relationship capital, organizational support, alliance management, and alliance performance were extracted from ASF, and resources, product development, and marketing were extracted from the firm's competitive advantage. There were differences in product development by the number of employees and in the degree of market competition by type of business. The degree of market competition had significant relationships with all of ASF while the firm's competitive advantage differed in the relationships.

  • Other-regarding preferences (such as trust, reciprocity and altruism) between companies, between consumers and retailers, and between employers and employees are integral elements in determining economic performance. Social trust which is a core element of social capital, especially, is known to reduce transaction costs, help solve collective action problems, and contribute to economic, social, and political development. Therefore, social trust has been given a great deal of attention across an array of academic disciplines for its role in promoting cooperation among individuals and groups, and for its positive influence on economic performance. Most studies describe Korea as a low-trust society than Japan or China. To identify the causes of social trust, this paper focuses on differences of social values (perception on competition and wealth accumulation) in 4 countries (Japan, China, Korea, and United States). Based on World Values Survey data, this paper analyzes effects of the social values on social trust. Social trust was measured by degree to which a respondent thinks that most people can be trusted. Perception on competition was measured by the degree to which a respondent thinks that competition is harmful, and perception on wealth accumulation was done by the degree to which a respondent thinks that wealth can grow so there is enough for everyone. The results showed that social trust was affected by perception on competition and wealth accumulation. A respondent showed higher level of social trust when he (or she) perceived positively competition and wealth accumulation. For enhancing social trust in a country, it is not easy to reduce income inequality and corruption which were reported as causes of social trust by previous studies. Compared to them, social values can be changed more easily by various concrete measures like education and mass-media. Differently from previous studies this paper stresses the concrete measures to enhance social trust in a country.

How Competitive and Stable is the Commercial Banking Industry in China after Bank Reforms?

  • This paper examines market concentration and its effect on competition in the Chinese commercial banking market. This study also investigates how changes in competition have affected the financial stability of Chinese commercial banks. To test the competitive conditions, we obtained the H statistic of the Panzar-Rosse model from a revenue function equation. The degree of financial stability is estimated by the Z-score formula. The Chinese banking industry has become an increasingly less concentrated market with an increased number of banks. Along with a decreased market concentration, competition in the Chinese banking industry has improved moderately. However, its market structure is still far from a competitive market. An individual bank's ability to earn higher markup or charge a higher net interest margin contributes to its financial soundness, although a higher degree of market concentration may have negative effect on the financial stability of the entire banking system.

  • State highway agencies (SHAs) typically apply a competitive procurement procedure to select contractors for their design-bid-build projects. Since the level of competition affects construction bid prices and project outcomes, the Federal Highway Agency (FHWA) suggests SHAs seek ways to improve competition among contractors continuously. However, they rarely conduct an empirical assessment of the current competition level necessary to identify room for improvement. Besides the number of bidders on a project, other factors such as winning or losing rates among the contractors in previous projects can also indicate the degree of competition; only a few contractors may have won the majority of the projects in a specific region. However, few studies have investigated such factors. This paper proposes a network analysis-based approach to evaluating contractor competition levels of highway projects using historical bid tabulation data. The proposed method provides insights into overall competition levels, the determination of competitive contractors, and winning rate distribution among contractors.

의료기관의 지역 내 경쟁정도와 경영성과간의 융복합적인 관계(지방의료원을 중심으로) (Complex relationship between Hospital management performance and the degree of the regional competition (Focusing on the Regional Public Hospital))

  • 본 연구는 지방의료원의 경쟁 수준의 정도를 측정하여 재무성과와의 관련성 분석 후 효과적인 경영전략을 수립할 수 있는 기초자료를 제공하는데 있다. 조사기간은 지방의료원의 HHI(허핀달-허쉬만)지수와 경영성과를 알 수 있는 2010년부터 2012년까지 3년간을 평가기준으로 하였으며, 총 31개의 의료원을 조사대상으로 선정하였다. 결론을 보면, 집중시장일수록 재무성과가 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 지역 내 경쟁정도와 재무지표 간의 유의한 상관관계가 나타났다. 지방의료원은 지역 내 경쟁력과 공공성을 확보하기 위한 정책수립과 실행을 위해서는 지역 의료시장의 경쟁정도와 그에 따른 추이를 파악이 요구된다. 지방의료원이 타 의료기관관의 경쟁력의 우위를 선점하기 위해서는 의료서비스 제공의 향상과 자본 투자 등의 선별적인 전략이 고려되어야 할 것이다.

Global and Local Competition between Exogenously Introduced microRNAs and Endogenously Expressed microRNAs

  • It has been reported that exogenously introduced micro-RNA (exo-miRNA) competes with endogenously expressed miRNAs (endo-miRNAs) in human cells, resulting in a detectable upregulation of mRNAs with endo-miRNA target sites (TSs). However, the detailed mechanisms of the competition between exo- and endo-miRNAs remain uninvestigated. In this study, using 74 microarrays that monitored the whole-transcriptome response after introducing miRNAs or siRNAs into HeLa cells, we systematically examined the derepression of mRNAs with exo- and/or endo-miRNA TSs. We quantitatively assessed the effect of the number of endo-miRNA TSs on the degree of mRNA derepression. As a result, we observed that the number of endo-miRNA TSs was significantly associated with the degree of derepression, supporting that the derepression resulted from the competition between exo- and endo-miRNAs. However, when we examined whether the site proficiency of exo-miRNA TSs could also influence mRNA derepression, to our surprise, we discovered a strong positive correlation. Our analysis indicates that site proficiencies of both exo- and endo-miRNA TSs are important determinants for the degree of mRNA derepression, implying that the derepression of mRNAs in response to exo-miRNA is more complex than that currently perceived. Our observations may lead to a more complete understanding of the detailed mechanisms of the competition between exo- and endo-miRNAs and to a more accurate prediction of miRNA targets. Our analysis also suggests an interesting hypothesis that long 3'-UTRs may function as molecular buffer against gene expression regulation by individual miRNAs.

병원시장지역 내 경쟁 정도가 의원급 의료기관의 항생제 처방률에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of the Degree of Competition of the Hospital Market Regions on Clinic's Rate of Antibiotics Prescription)

  • 급성상기도감염증에 대한 항생제 처방률은 의료기관의 유형, 표시과목, 의료기관이 위치한 지역 등 여러 요인에 따라 차이를 보인다. 본 연구는 1차 의료기관인 의원들 중 내과, 소아과, 이비인후과 의원의 급성상기도감염증에 대한 항생제 처방률에 환자의 특성과 같은 의학적 요인이 아닌 의원의 수입과 밀접한 관계가 있는 의원 수의 변화(경쟁 정도의 변화)와 같은 경제적 요인이 미치는 영향을 실증 분석하였다. 2006년 건강보험심사평가원에서 발표한 전국 각 의료기관의 급성상기도감염증에 대한 항생제 처방률을 주 자료원으로 하여, 경쟁지수를 두 가지 형태로 정의하고 수요 측면을 나타내는 변수와 공급 측면을 나타내는 변수를 통제변수로 선정하여 회귀분석을 실시한 결과 경쟁지수를 어떤 형태로 정의하든, 의원이 위치한 지역의 경쟁정도는 의사들의 항생제 처방률에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 미친 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 결과는 시장지역 내 경쟁 정도의 변화와 같은 경제적 요인이 의사들의 처방행태에 영향을 미치는 요인 중 하나라고 해석할 수 있다. 아울러 인과관계의 방향과 관련하여, 의사가 진료하는 지역의 경쟁 정도가 높아질수록 항생제 처방률이 통계적으로 유의하게 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 의사의 진료수입 감소를 초래할 것으로 예상되는 시장환경의 변화에 대해 자신의 진료수입을 예전상태로 보전하기 위해 불필요한 의료서비스 소비를 유도해서 얻는 편익(소득효과)이 이를 위해 자신이 지불해야 할 비용(대체효과)보다 크기 때문에 항생제 처방률을 증가시킨 것으로 해석할 수 있으며, 또한 경제적 유인체계의 변화에 대하여 의사의 진료행태가 영향을 받을 수 있음을 실증적으로 뒷받침하는 것으로 이해할 수 있을 것이다.

Web 인지도를 반영한 전자상거래 마케팅 채널 경쟁에 관한 연구 (Analysis of marketing Channel competition in Electronic Commerce Incorporating Web Awareness)

  • The proliferation of electronic commerce(EC) has led manufactureres to consider Internet based marketing as a salient candidate for strategic diversification of marketing channel. In this case, each manufacturer can build its own Web store or rent an existing special EC store. Such decision making of ‘build’ or ‘rent’ can be analyzed by a game model which derives the Nash solutions for price and profit considering degree of competition with other competitive manufacturers. In this paper, to overcome the drawbacks of the traditional linear demand function, we first propose a new linear demand function which incorporates not only the price difference between competitive products but the awareness of Web stores perceived by the consumers, then design the game models to analyze the characteristics of three typical types of marketing channel in duopoly market. Based on the Nash solutions of the game models, we analyzed the effect of the degree of competition and Web awareness in selecting the optimal marketing channel.
