5052 aluminum alloy sheets of 2mm thickness were butt welded using a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser with and without Ar shielding gas. Vickers hardness, transverse-weld tensile and bulge tests were carried out to investigate the effect of Ar shielding gas on the mechanical properties and formability of laser welds. Porosity in the weld metals was investigated using an optical microscope. Mechanical properties and formability of 5052 aluminum alloy laser welds were degraded compared to those of base metal. However, those properties were improved due to the reduced size and number of porosity when Ar shielding gas was used.

To evaluate equipment survivability of the polymer Viton, used in sealing materials, the effects of its thermal degradation were investigated in severe accident (SA) environment in a nuclear power plant. Viton specimens were prepared and thermally degraded at different SA temperature profiles. Changes in mechanical properties at different temperature profiles in different SA states were investigated. The thermal lag analysis was performed at calculated convective heat transfer conditions to predict the exposure temperature of the polymer inside the safety-related equipment. The polymer that was thermally degraded at postaccident states exhibited the highest change in its mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and elongation.

$Si_3N_4$-$TiB_2$ with 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 4 wt% $Y_2O_3$ additives was hot pressed in a flowing $N_2$ environment with varying $TiB_2$ content from 10 to 50 vol%. Variations of mechanical (hardness, fracture toughness, and flexual strength), and tribological properties as a function of $TiB_2$ content were investigated. As the content of $TiB_2$ increased, relative density decreased due to the chemical reaction of $TiB_2$in $N_2$ environment. The reduction of density causes mechanical properties to be degraded with an increase of $TiB_2$ in $Si_3N_4$. Tribological properties were dependent of microstructure as well as mechanical properties, however, they were degraded strongly by the chemical reaction of $Si_3N_4$-$TiB_2$ during hot pressing in $N_2$ environment. SEM and TEM observations, and X-ray diffraction analysis that the chemical reaction products at the interface are TiCN, Si, and $SiO_2$. Also, the comparison of XRD patterns of the $Si_3N_4$-40 vol% $TiB_2$ composites hot pressed at $1,750^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour between in $N_2$ and in Ar gas was made. The XRD peaks of Si and $SiO_2$ were not found in Ar, but still a weak peak of TiCN was presented.
This paper deals with the thermal and mechanical properties of ceramic coating material for bus bars. A ceramic coated samples were prepared for the mechanical properties test. There are two types of samples. One is a square shape and the other is a busbar shape. Each sample was deteriorated for 30 days to compare the thermal and mechanical properties with the non-degraded samples. Two thermal properties tests are TGA and flammability tests, and four mechanical properties tests are drop impact test, cross cut, tensile test, and bend test. The ceramic coating material was never damaged by impact and did not separate from aluminum in the cross cut test. In the tensile test, the breakage of the insulating material did not occur until aluminum fractured, and the breakage of the insulating material did not occur until the maximum load in the bending test. The decomposition temperature (melting point) of the ceramic coating material was higher than that of other epoxy insulators. This ceramic coating material is nonflammable and it has excellent fire stability.
The long-tenn exposure of polymeric composite materials to extreme-use environments, such as pressure, temperature, moisture, and load cycles, results in changes in the original properties of the material. In this study, the effect of combined environmental factors such as ultraviolet ray, high temperature and high moisture on mechanical and thermal analysis properties of glass fabric and phenolic composites are evaluated through a 2.5 KW accelerated environmental aging tester. The environmental factors such as temperature, moisture and ultraviolet ray applied of specimens. A xenon-arc lamp is utilized for ultraviolet light and exposure time of up to 3000 hours are applied. Several types of specimens - tensile, bending, and shear specimens that are warp direction and fill direction are used to investigate the effects of environmental factors on mechanical properties of the composites. Mechanical degradations for tensile, bending and shear properties are evaluated through a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Also, storage shear modulus, loss shear modulus and tan a are measured as a function of exposure time through a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA). From the experimental results, changes in material properties of glass fabric and phenolic composites are shown to be slightly degraded due to combined environmental effects.
The remaining life estimation for the aged components in power plants as well as chemical plants are very important because mechanical properties of the components are degraded with in-service exposure time in high temperatures. Since it is difficult to take specimens from the operating components to evaluate mechanical properties of components, nondestructive techniques are needed to evaluate the degradation. In this study, test materials with several different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. The DC potential drop method and destructive methods such as tensile and fracture toughness were used in order to evaluate the degradation of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels. In this result, we can see that tensile strength and fracture toughness can be calculated from resistivity and it is possible to evaluate material degradation using DC potential drop method, non-destructive method.
This research was undertaken to clarify effects of thermal aging on electrochemical and mechanical properties of superaustenitic stainless steel and to detect the material degradation nondestructively. The steel was artificially aged at $300{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ for $240{\sim}10,000h$ and the mechanical properties were investigated at $-196{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ using small punch(SP) test. Also, the change in electrochemical properties caused by effects of thermal aging on superaustenitic stainless steel was investigated using electrochemical anodic polarization test in a KOH electrolyte. Carbides and ${\eta}-phase(Fe_2Mo)$ precipitated in the grain boundaries seem to deteriorate the mechanical properties by decreasing cohesive strength in the grain boundaries and to promote the current density observed in electrochemical polarization curves, The electrochemical and mechanical properties of superaustenitic stainless steel decreased significantly in the specimen aged at $650^{\circ}C$ corresponding to the sensitization temperature for conventional austenitic stainless steels.
It is very important to evaluate the surface or subsurface microstructure because of their influences on mechanical properties of materials. Surface SH-wave which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface and subsurface layer is an attractive technique for material evaluation. The destructive method is widely used for the estimation of material degradation but it has a great difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. In this study, nondestructive evaluation for degraded structural materials used at high temperature though surface SH-wave method is discussed. 2.25Cr-1Mo steel specimens which were prepared by the isothermal aging heat treatment at $650^{\circ}$ were evaluated though ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation techniques investigating the change of sound velocity, attenuation coefficient and amplitude spectra. In addition, it has verified experimentally the frequency-dependence of attenuation coefficient though wavelet analysis method.
It's required mechanical properties of in-service facilities to maintain safety operation in power plants as well as chemical plants. In this study the four classes of the thermally aged 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V specimens were prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method at $630^{\circ}C$. Ultrasonic tests, tensile tests, $K_{IC}$ tests and hardness tests were performed in order to evaluate the degree of degradation of the material. The mechanical properties were decreased as degraded, but the attenuation coefficient and the harmonic generation level of a ultrasonic signal were increased. Expecially the nonlinear parameter of the signal is sensitive and will be a good parameter to evaluate the material degradation.

Si3N4-TiC composites have been known as electrically conductive ceramics. $Si_3N_4-TiC$ composites with 2 wt% $Al_2O_3$ and 4 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were hot pressed in $N_2$ environment. The mechanical properties including hardness, fracture toughness, and flexural strength and tribological properties were investigated as a function of TiC content. $Si_3N_4-40$ vol% TiC composite was hot pressed at $1,750^{\circ}C$, $1,800^{\circ}C$, and $1,850^{\circ}C$ for 1, 3 and 5 hours in $N_2$ gas. Mechanical and tribolgical properties depended on microstructures, which were controlled by hte TiC content, hot press temperature, and hot press holding time. However, mechanical properties and tribological behaviors were degraded by the chemical reaction between TiC and N. The chemically reacted products such as TiCN, SiC, and $SiO_2$ were detered by the X-ray diffraction analysis.
