  • We investigate the characteristics of the surface mode formed at the single interface between dual singly negative medium layers. It is shown that the interface can support a mode which has polarization degeneracy and a vanishing propagation constant. That is, this surface mode is a polarization-independent one that does not propagate at all through the interface. The corresponding electric and magnetic field distributions become static along the longitudinal (guiding) direction (but not along the transverse direction) resulting in the formation of transverse-electric/longitudinalmagnetic or transverse-magnetic/longitudinal-electric modes.

  • An enhancement of through-bond interaction by bond angle distortion in pyrazine was examined using various MO methods. Results of MINDO/3 geometry optimization with an angle (${\alpha}$) at $C_2$ atom fixed to 120∼90$^{\circ}$ lead to distorted structures in which the distorted bond is brought closer toward lone pair orbital n of N atom. It was also found that the bond angle distortion increased the P character at the atom $C_2$, resulting in an increased vicinal overlap between n and the $C_2-C_3$ bond. The FMO patterns of ${\sigma}$ framework showed three-fold degeneracy, one of which was of different symmetry which mixes in the symmetry adapted pair, $n_+\;and\;n_-;\;both\;n_+\;and\;n_-$ orbitals thus can interact with both FMOs of the ${\sigma}$ framework. The LCBO-MO analysis with partial elimination of bonds, antibonds or both, however, revealed that the main interaction of $n_+$ was with the HO-${\sigma}$ and that of $n_-$ was with the LU-${\sigma}^{\ast}$ orbital of the ${\sigma}$ framework.

  • Drying-step in sol-gel processing was bypassed by exchanging alcoholic solvent in forsterite alcogel directly with MMA. By in-situ polymerization of the MMA, organic-inorganic nano-composite of PMMA-forsterite was prepared. As porous nature of inorganic networks in the gel was preserved and fixated in the composite, spherical morphology of PMMA was resulted. The PMMA-forsterite composite was optically transparent, machinable, mechanically sustainable, and thermally more stable than pristine PMMA. When doped with $Eu^{+3}$, inorganic moiety in the composite provided site environment that is very different from that in pristine PMMA. Prominent $^{5}D_0$$^{7}F_0$ transition at 578 nm, broken degeneracy in $^{5}D_0$$^{7}F_1$ and $^{5}D_0$$^{7}F_2$ transitions suggested that $Eu^{+3}$ was exclusively doped in the inorganic moiety of the composite, which had lower symmetry than the organic counterpart.

  • I investigate the origin of arc degeneracies in satellite microlens parallax ${\pi}_E$ measurements with only late time data, e.g., t > $t_0+t_E$ as seen from the satellite. I show that these are due to partial overlap of a series of osculating, exactly circular, degeneracies in the ${\pi}_E$ plane, each from a single measurement. In events with somewhat earlier data, these long arcs break up into two arclets, or (with even earlier data) two points, because these earlier measurements give rise to intersecting rather than osculating circles. The two arclets (or points) then constitute one pair of degeneracies in the well-known four-fold degeneracy of space-based microlens parallax. Using this framework of intersecting circles, I show that next-generation microlens satellite experiments could yield good ${\pi}_E$ determinations with only about five measurements per event, i.e., about 30 observations per day to monitor 1500 events per year. This could plausibly be done with a small (hence cheap, in the spirit of Gould & Yee 2012) satellite telescope, e.g., 20 cm.

  • Tone Injection (TI) scheme significantly reduces the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of Multicarrier Modulation (MCM). However, the computational complexity of the TI scheme rises exponentially with the extra freedom constellation number. Therefore, a novel immune evolutionary mechanism-based TI scheme is proposed in this paper to reduce the computational complexity. By restraining undesirable degeneracy during the processing, this IEM scheme can dramatically increase the population fitness. Monte Carlo results show that proposed IEM-based TI scheme can achieve a significant PAPR and BER improvement with a low complexity.

  • We introduce a novel method for reconstructing the projected dark matter mass maps of merging galaxy clusters by applying the convolutional neural network (CNN) to their weak lensing maps. We generate synthesized grayscale images from given weak lensing maps that preserve their averaged galaxy ellipticity. We then apply them to multi-layered CNN with architectures of alternating convolution and trans-convolution filters to predict the mass maps. We train our architecture with 1,000 Subaru/Suprime-Cam mock weak lensing maps, and our method have better mass map prediction than the Kaiser-Squires method with the following three aspects: (1) better pixel-to-pixel correlation, (2) more accurate finding of density peak position, and (3) free from mass-sheet degeneracy. We also apply our method to the HST weak lensing map of the El Gordo cluster and compare our result to the previous studies.

  • Enzymatic methylation of arginine and lysine residues of several cytochrome c and lysine residue of calmodulin always resulted in lowering of their respective isoelectric points (pI). Employing cytochromes c derived from various sources, we examined a possible relationship between the degree of amino acid sequence degeneracy and the magnitude of change in the pI values by enzymatic methylation, and found that there was no correlation between these two parameters. By constructing space-filling models of oligopeptide fragments adjacent to the potential methylation sites, we have noted that not all the methylatable residues are able to form hydrogen bonds prior to the methylation. Two preparations of yeast apocytochrome c, one chemically prepared by removing heme from holocytochrome c and the other by translating yeast iso-1-cytochrome c mRNA in vitro, exhibited slightly higher Stokes radii than the homologous holocytochrome c, indicating relatively 'relaxed or open' conformation of the protein. However, when the in vitro synthesized methylated apocytochrome c was compared with the unmethylated counter-part, the Stokes radius of the latter was found to be larger.

  • We have revisited the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS), a Hubble Space Telescope program to obtain ACS/WFC g and z bands imaging for a sample of 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. In this study, we examine 51 nucleated early-type galaxies in the ACSVCS in order to look into the relationship between the photometric and structural properties of stellar nuclei and their host galaxies. We morphologically dissect galaxies into five classes. We note that (1) the stellar nuclei of dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are generally fainter and bluer with g > 18.95 and (g-z) < 1.40 compared to some brighter and redder counterparts of the ellipticals (E) and lenticular galaxies (S0), (2) the g-band half-light radii of stellar nuclei of all dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are smaller than 20 pc and their average is about 4 pc, and (3) the colors of red stellar nuclei with (g - z) > 1.40 in bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies are bluer than their host galaxies colors. We also show that most of the unusually "red" stellar nuclei with (g-z) > 1.54 in the ACSVCS are the central parts of bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies. Furthermore, we present multi photometric band color - color plots that can be used to break the age-metallicity degeneracy particularly by inclusion of the thermally pulsing-asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phases of stellar evolution in the stellar population models.

  • We show that next-generation galaxy surveys such as KAOS (the Kilo-Aperture Optical Spectro-graph)will constrain dark energy even if the baryon oscillations are missing from the monopole power spectrum and the bias is scale- and time-dependent KAOS will accurately measure the quadrupole power spectrum which gives the leading anisotropies in the power spectrum in redshift space due to peculiar velocities, the finger of God effect, as well as the Alcock-Paczynski effect. The combination of monopole and quadrupole power spectra powerfully breaks the degeneracy between the bias parameters and dark energy and, in the complete absence of baryon oscillations ($\Omega$b = 0), leads to a roughly $500\%$ improvement in constraints on dark energy compared with the monopole spectrum alone. As a result, for KAOS the worst case with no oscillations has dark energy errors only mildly degraded relative to the ideal case, providing insurance on the robustness of KAOS constraints on dark energy. We show that nonlinear effects are crucial in correctly evaluating the quadrupole and significantly improving the constraints on dark energy when we allow for multi-parameter scale-dependent bias.
