  • The finite difference software Flac3D is used to study the influence of tunnel burial depth, tunnel diameter and lateral pressure coefficient of original rock stress on the stress and deformation of tunnel surrounding rock under sandstone condition. The results show that the maximum shear stress, the radius of the plastic zone and the maximum displacement in the surrounding rock increase with the increase of the diameter of the tunnel. When the lateral pressure coefficient is 1, it is most favorable for surrounding rock and lining structure, with the increase or decrease of lateral pressure coefficient, the maximum principal stress, surrounding displacement and plastic zone range of surrounding rock and lining show a sharp increase trend, the plastic zone on the lining increases with the increase of buried depth.

  • In analyzing the axisymmetric backward extrusion process a new method of analysis using upper-bound theorem is proposed in which the plastic zone and dead metal zone cam be predicted. Experiments are carried out with commercial aluminum. The metal flow on the meridional plane has been visualized experimentally by using the gridded specimens. It is shown that the theoretical results both in extrusion load and deformation pattern are in good agreement with the experimental results and they can be used for effective punch and die design to consider various process parameters in axisymmetric backward extrusion.

  • The deformation behavior of the excavated behind ground due to the displacement shape of retention walls is predicted by numerical analysis, which can be performed using the artificial displacement method with elasto-plastic constitutive model. The displacement shape of the behind ground around the retention wall is similar to the displacement shape of the retention wall. However, far from the retention wall, it changes to the displacement shape of cantilever. The deformation (the settlement, the lateral movement) of the excavated behind ground can be decreased by restraining the upper displacement of the retention wall. The displacement shape of the retention wall due to excavation affects on the plastic failure zone and decreasing zone of stability of the excavated behind ground.

  • Generally, fracture of a material is influenced by plastic zone size developed near the crack tip. Hence, according to the relative size of plastic zone in the material, the mechanics as a tool for analyzing the fracture process are classified into three kinds, that is, Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, Elastic Plastic Fracture Mechanics, Large Deformation Fracture Mechanics. Even though the plastic zone size is such an important parameter, the practical measurement techniques are very limited and the one for in-situ measurement is not virtually available. Therefore, elastic-plastic FEA has been performed to estimate the plastic zone size. In this study, it is noticed that side necking at the surface is a consequence of plastic deformation and lateral contraction and the relation between the plastic zone and side necking is investigated. FEA for modified boundary layer models with finite thickness, various mode mixities $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and strain hardening exponent n=3, 10 are performed. The results are presented and the implication regarding to application to experiment is discussed.

  • Oscillartory thermocapillary flow of high Prandtl number fluids in the half-zone configuration is investigated. Based on experimental observations, one oscillation cycle consists of an active period where the surface flow is strong and the hot corner region is extended and a slow period where the opposite occurs. It is found that during oscillations the deformation of free surface plays an important role and a surface deformation parameter S correlates the experimental data well on the onset of oscillations. A scaling analysis is performed to analyze the basic steady flow in the parametric ranges of previous ground-based experiments and shows that the flow is viscous dominant and is mainly driven in the hot corner. The predicted scaling laws agree well with the numerical results. It is postulated that the oscillations are caused by a time lag between the surface and return flows. A deformation parameter S represents the response time of the return flow to the surface flow.

  • Strain localization is important phenomenon since it governs the total behavior or ultimate loads in various kinds of engineering problems. Establishment of an analysis method for strain localization phenomena is also of great concern for expansion of fracture mechanics of concrete. Inside zone of localization, a decrese in stress is accompanied by an increse in strain; outside the strain decreses. All deformation localization phenomenon cannot be predicted by both the classical stress-strain formulation and the linear elastic fracture mechanics. In this paper, a simple one dimensional model including localized deformation zone is studied under compressive and tensile loading. When the model is loaded. localization is assumed to occur uniformly in a finite region and material outside the localization zone is modelled as elastic unloading occurs. Size effects of effective elastic moduli under compression and tension in localization zone are examined.

  • This paper describes the internal structures and K-Ar ages of fault gouges collected from the Dongnae fault zone. This fault zone is internally zoned and occurs in the multiple fault cores. A fault core consists of thin gouge and narrow cataclastic zones that are bounded by a much thicker damage zone. Intensity of deformation and alteration increases from damage zone through cataclastic zone to gouge zone. It is thought that cataclasis of brittle deformation was the dominant strain-accomodation mechanism in the early stage of deformation to form the gouge zone and that crushed materials in the regions of maximum localization of fault slip subsequently moved by cataclastic flow. Deformation mechanism drastically changed from brittle processes to fluid-assisted flow along the gouge zone as the high porosity and permeability of pulverzied materials during faulting facilitated the influx of the hydrothermal fluids. Subsequently, the fluids reacted with gouge materials to form clay minerals. Fracturing and alteration could have repeatedly taken place in the gouge zone by elevated fluid pressures generated from the reduction of pore volume due to the formation of clay minerals and precipitation of other materials. XRD analysis revealed that the most common clay minerals of the gouge zones are illite and smectite with minor zeolite and kaolinite. Most of illites are composed of 1Md polytype, indicating the products of hydrothermal alteration. The major activities of the Dongnae fault can be divided into two periods based upon K-Ar age data of the fault gouges : 51.4∼57.5Ma and 40.3∼43.6Ma. Judging from the enviromental condition of clay mineral formation, it is inferred that the hydrothermal alteration of older period occured at higher temperature than that of younger period.

  • For construction of I-beam steel structures, a fillet welding is one of the main manufacturing process. However, this welding process cause some problems associated with welding residual stress and welding deformation that are harmful to the safety of structures. Accordingly, this study clarified the creation mechanism of the welding deformation on I-beam steel structure from the experimental results given by the FEM method. To prevent or minimize the longitudinal bending deformation, first of all, a field supervision is necessary to observe the optimal groove design. Secondly, the welding order for cooling weld zone is needed.
