• We describe recent observations and measurements realized with microdot (MDOT) detectors having 50 mm, 100 mm, and 200 mm pitches for 3.7 keV X-rays. A gas gain of $3.1{\times}10^3$ has been measured with 50 mm pitch MDOT at potential difference much lower than those usually obtained with MSGCs. The defocusing effect caused by the existence of the readout lines passing below the insulator layer has been investigated from the drift voltage dependence of the count rate variation and the electric field simulation for all the detectors. Results concerning the spatial resolutions are presented with collimated X-ray beams.

  • The performance of finger-vein recognition methods is limited by camera optical defocusing, the light-scattering effect of skin, and individual variations in the skin depth, density, and thickness of vascular patterns. Consequently, all of these factors may affect the image quality, but few studies have conducted quality assessments of finger-vein images. Therefore, we developed a new finger-vein recognition method based on image quality assessment. This research is novel compared with previous methods in four respects. First, the vertical cross-sectional profiles are extracted to detect the approximate positions of vein regions in a given finger-vein image. Second, the accurate positions of the vein regions are detected by checking the depth of the vein's profile using various depth thresholds. Third, the quality of the finger-vein image is measured by using the number of detected vein points in relation to the depth thresholds, which allows individual variations of vein density to be considered for quality assessment. Fourth, by assessing the quality of input finger-vein images, inferior-quality images are not used for recognition, thereby enhancing the accuracy of finger-vein recognition. Experiments confirmed that the performance of finger-vein recognition systems that incorporated the proposed quality assessment method was superior to that of previous methods.

  • One of the ways to measure the distance in the computer vision is to use the focus and defocus. There are two methods in this way. The first method is caculating the distance from the focused images in a point (MMDFP: the method measuring the distance to the focal plane). The second method is to measure the distance from the difference of the camera parameters, in other words, the apertures of the focal planes, of two images with having the different parameters (MMDCI: the method to measure the distance by comparing two images). The problem of the existing methods in MMDFP is to decide the thresholding vaue on detecting the most optimally focused object in the defocused image. In this case, it could be solved by comparing only the error energy in 3x3 window between two images. In MMDCI, the difficulty is the influence of the deflection effect. Therefor, to minimize its influence, we utilize two differently focused images instead of different aperture images in this paper. At the first, the amount of defocusing between two images is measured through the introduction of regularization and then the distance from the camera to the objects is caculated by the new equation measuring the distance. In the results of simulation, we see the fact to be able to measure the distance from two differently defocused images, and for our approach to be robuster than the method using the different aperture in the noisy image.

  • Defocused CO$_2$ laser beam irradiation strengthening of 60kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ grade steel sheet was investigated to obtain the tensile strength similar to that of fully penetrated one by the focused beam. The melted line width by the defocused beam was 3∼4 times larger compared to that of the focused beam. However, the increase of tensile strength with 1 line irradiation by the defocused beam was similar to that of 2~3 lines by the focused beam. The increase(37.6%) of bending strength with 1 line by the defocused beam was higher than the increase(12.9%) of tensile strength. Also, the effect of cooling gas to strengthening was observed.

  • We investigate the generation of the dark spatial soliton and its role of wave guiding in Fe doped$LiNbO_3$ A cw Ar+ laser of 488 nm is used for the generation of the dark spatial soliton. The generation of the dark spatial soliton is observed even at the laser intensity as low as 10 mW/cm2. The self-defocusing effect is observed when the direction of the intensity variation is parallel to the optic axis, while it can't be seen when perpendicular to the axis. So, it is verified that the refractive index change is generated parallel to the optic axis. When 633 nm He-Ne laser beam is injected into the dark spatial soliton, the beam propagates just as in the diffraction free medium. So, it is verified that the dark spatial soliton can act as a waveguide.eguide.

  • Dental laser provides many advantages to the clinicians. Those are excellent hemostatic effect, good operating sight, minimal adjacent tissue injury, reduction of postoperative swelling & pain, reduction of postoperative infection, reduction of scar tissue & contraction, etc. The purpose of this study is to observe how these advantages work after surgical extraction of impacted third molar. From march 2000 to july 2000, we have randomly divided the patients who had been surgically extracted unilateral impacted third molar into two groups. The first group comprised $CO_2$ laser illumination with 3 watts, defocusing & continuous mode, rotating motion for about 3 minutes after finishing of surgical extraction & suture. The other group patients were not irradiated. The medications in two groups were same. We measured pain, swelling and trismus three times(pre-operation, first day after operation, and 7th day after operation). The number of the patients who had measured three times all are 64, laser irradiated groups are 36 and non-irradiated groups are 28. The age ranged from 19 to 50, with a mean of 27.9 years. The operative time ranged from 3 minutes to 50 minutes, with a mean of 12.1 minutes. In the $CO_2$ laser group, the pain intensity of the 7th day after operation was still increased significantly comparing with that of the pre-operation and the distance which were measured for the swelling was different significantly. In the other group, the mouth opening limitation was still decreased significantly.
