  • The shear strength is an important factor in the design of prestressed concrete beams. Therefore, researchers have utilized various methods to determine the shear strength of these elements for the design purposes. To evaluate some of the proposed theoretical methods, numerous models of post-tensioned beams with or without vertical prestressing are selected and analyzed using the finite element method and assuming nonlinear behavior for the materials. In this regard the validity of modeling is evaluated based on some tests results. In the second part of the study two beam specimens are built and tested and their load-deformation curve and cracking pattern are studied. The analytical results consist of compressive strut slope and mid span load deflection are compared with some experimental results, and the results of some codes' formulas. Finally comparing the results of nonlinear analysis with the experimental values, a new formula is proposed for determining strut slopes in prestressed concrete beams.

  • This study is based on the use and performance of bamboo reinforcements in construction of low-cost structures. This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo reinforcements. Bamboo reinforced concrete beam specimens were tested with different reinforcement ratios and observed the load capacity, deflection and failure patterns. It was observed that, flexural strength of bamboo reinforced column is sufficient higher than plain cement concrete and comparable to steel reinforced concrete beams. Bamboo reinforced concrete columns with different reinforcement ratio also tested and observed the ultimate compressive strength and failure pattern. It found, all columns failed in a similar pattern due to crushing of concrete. According to cost analysis, bamboo reinforced beams and columns with moderate reinforcement ratio showed the best strength-cost ratio among plain cement concrete and steel reinforced concrete.

  • Coating is one of the methods used to solve the problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures. There are few research reported in the literature regarding the effect of zinc-coating on flexural behavior compared to epoxy coating. The objective of this study was to determine whether zinc-coated rebar adversely affects flexural behavior. Concrete beams reinforced with black or zinc-coated steel were tested in flexure. The test variables included the presence of rebar surface coating with zinc, steel ratio used and cover depth. The study concentrated on comparing crack pattern, crack width, deflection and strain. The ultimate flexural capacity of beams reinforced with zinc-coated bars was not different from that of black steel reinforced beams. The results from deflection and crack width measurements were indicative of no significant variation for the different rebar surface conditions. In addition, it was found that load-strain curve of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel was similar to that of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel. Therefore, the test results indicated that the use of zinc-coated rebar had no adverse effect on flexural behavior compared to the use of black rebar.

  • There are several types of compressors which are appropriate for hydrogen gas station. Diaphragm type of compressor is the one of them and it satisfies the requirements for that purpose in terms of maintaining gas purity and making high pressure over 700 bar. The objective of this study is to find an optimal design of oil distribution hole configuration. The number of holes is changed maintaining total cross-sectional area of holes. Five cases(1 hole, 4, 8,16 and 24 holes) were studied through Fluid Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis method. Gas and oil pressure, the deflection and stress of the diaphragm were analysed during compression and suction process respectively. There is no specific difference among the cases during compression. An additional deflection due to the existence of hole was found during suction for all case. But the highest deflection and stress were found in the 1 hole case. It was seen that 60% decrease of stress in magnitude in 24 hole case compare to the 1 hole case.

  • Composite action is generally achieved by providing shear connections between steel top flange and concrete topping. Composite sections have greater stiffness than the summation of the individual stiffness of slab and beam. Therefore, they can carry larger loads or similar loads with appreciably smaller deflection and are less prone to transient vibration. T-type Steel Composite beam (TSC-beam) was developed to increase these advantages. Ten specimens were tested for this study. During the experiment, crack pattern and deflection of beam were investigated. The examined results of TSC beam system were compared with results from the typical composite beam and RC beam.

  • The prestressed concrete continuous members with unbonded tendons were investigated while comparing the experimental data with the analytical results. The comparison was carried out with the program TAPS which can take into account the unbonded tendon effects. The subjects that were interested included the load-deflection response, the design equations for the tendon stress at failure, the effects of bonded reinforcements, the effects of span-depth ratio, the effects of loading type. In this paper, contiriuous prestressed concrete members with unbonded ten dons were investigated. Of twelve tests with continuous members, six were two-span beams and six were three span one-way slats. Analytical results were compared favorably with experimental data and disclosed that the tendon stress at flexural failure is the function of the amount of bonded reinforcements, the loading types and patterns, and the tendon profile.

  • As concrete structures are getting larger, higher, longer and more specialized, it is more required to develop steel fiber concrete and apply to the real world. In this research, it is aimed to have fatigue strength examined, varying the steel fiber content of 0%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.25% by experimental study of fatigue behavior of the steel fiber reinforced concrete continuous beams under cyclic loading. The ultimate load and initial load of flexural cracking were measured by static test. In addition, the load versus strain relation, load versus deflection relation, crack pattern and fracture mode by increasing weight were observed. On the other hand, the crack propagation and the modes of fracture according to cycle number and the relation of cyclic loading to deflection relation and strain relation were investigated by fatigue test. As the result of fatigue test, continuous beam without steel fiber was failed at 60 ~ 70% of The static ultimate strength and it could be concluded that fatigue strength to two million cyclic loading was arround 67.2% by S-N curve. On the other hand, that with steel fiber was failed at 65 ~ 85% of the static ultimate strength and it could be concluded fatigue strength to two million cyclic loading around 71.7%.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the nonlinear analysis method which combines the nonlinear incremental method with the layered method to solve the problems due to the geometric and the material nonlinearities. As numerical analysis models, the reinforced concrete simple beam and the steel arch frame are used to verify the algorithm of the proposed nonlinear method. The results are gotten from the computation procedures. According to the results of this study, the fracture pattern of the beam according to the ratio of tensile steel and the strength of the concrete and the steel can be estimated by the proposed method. Therefore, the load-deflection curve of structure can be, exactly, depicted by the proposed method. Also, the rupture load, the site and the depth of crack of the beam can analytically be checked by the proposed method. In this respect, the proposed method contributes for the solving the stability problem of the actual structure.

  • In this study, we peformed optimal design of a composite skid landing gear, one of the solid spring shock absorbers, for light vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Although a solid spring type has poor energy dissipation capability, it is commonly used for light aircraft where sink speeds are low and shock absorption is non-critical in terms of simplicity, low cost and weight reduction. In this paper, design parameters of solid spring such as sink speed, gear leg length, deflection and landing load factor were reviewed. In order to meet structural requirements such as deflection and strength, finally, we conducted optimal design of the composite skid landing gear for VTOL UAV using genetic algorithm and pattern search algorithm.

  • Cracking is considered to be one of the important factors in determining the durability of reinforced concrete structures. When the bending stress exceeds the modulus of rupture of the concrete, cracking form along the length of members. The total load is transferred across these cracks by the reinforcement, but the concrete between cracks is still capable of carrying stresses due to the bond between steel and concrete. This phenomenon is called the tension stiffening effect. The tension stiffening effect is affected by many variables, such as the bond stress, strength of concrete, interrocking of aggregate, type of steel, and dowel action of steel. Also, this tension stiffening effect is usually quite significant in beams under service loading, and must be taken into account in the calculation of deflection and crack widths. In this study, the experiment was carried out on types of specimen, strength of concrete, and steel ratio and finite element analysis were compared in terms of load-deflection relationship, crack pattern.
