  • Cavitation is a phenomenon caused by vapour cavities that is produced in rapid pressure changes. When the cavitation happened, the sound pressure level of a underwater radiated noise is increased rapidly. As a result, it can increase the probability of the identification or classification of a our warship's acoustic signature by an enemy ship. However, there is a problem that it is hard to precisely detect the occurrence of a cavitation noise. Therefore, this paper presents recent improvements in terms of the cavitation noise measurement by using continuous wavelet transform and DEMON(Detection of Envelope Modulation on Noise) signal processing. Then, we present that the suggested scheme is more suitable for detecting the cavitation than existing algorithms.

  • In this paper, a study result to decide the accuracy specifications of inertial sensors satisfying the performance requirements of SINS(ship's inertial navigation system) is proposed. To do this, the performance specifications of overseas SINS is surveyed and the detailed error analysis of SINS at stationary condition is performed. Also, a new performance index to indicate the performance of SINS is derived. Modelling and simulation results show that the accuracy specifications of inertial sensors to meet the performance requirements of SIGMA40XP, a typical overseas SINS, can be determined through the newly derived performance index in this paper.

  • Short-range detection of chemical agents deposited on ground surface using a standoff Raman system employing a pulsed laser at 248 nm is described. Mounted in a vehicle such as an NBC reconnaissance vehicle, the system is protected against toxic chemicals. As most chemicals including chemical warfare agents have unique Raman spectra, the spectra can be used for detecting toxic chemicals contaminated on the ground. This article describes the design of the Raman spectroscopic system and its performance on several chemicals contaminated on asphalt, concrete, sand, etc.

  • For successful automatic target recognition(ATR) with synthetic aperture radar(SAR) imagery, SAR target images of the database should have the identical or highly similar resolution with those collected from SAR sensors. However, it is time-consuming or infeasible to construct the multiple databases with different resolutions depending on the operating SAR system. In this paper, an approach for resolution conversion of SAR target images is proposed based on conditional generative adversarial network(cGAN). First, a number of pairs consisting of SAR target images with two different resolutions are obtained via SAR simulation and then used to train the cGAN model. Finally, the model generates the SAR target image whose resolution is converted from the original one. The similarity analysis is performed to validate reliability of the generated images. The cGAN model is further applied to measured MSTAR SAR target images in order to estimate its potential for real application.

  • The inertial sensor errors in SDINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System) can be compensated by rotating the inertial measurement unit and it is called RINS(Rotational Inertial Navigation System). It is assumed that the error of the inertial sensor in RINS is a static bias. However, the error of the inertial sensor actually developed and produced is not a static bias due to the change of the temperature applied to the sensor and the influence of the earth's gravity acceleration. In this paper, we propose a six-position gyro bias calibration method to evaluate the gyro bias required for RINS and present the test results of applying it to a ring laser gyro inertial navigation system under development.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to suggest weapon system specifications for requirements of Condition-Based Maintenance(CBM/CBM+). Methods: The military documents and case studies with regard to condition-based maintenance were reviewed. Representative Korea defense specifications of weapon system such as an aircraft, a C4ISR etc. were analyzed and investigated the level of requirement for maintainability was. Results: Condition-based maintenance was defined in both U.S. instruction and Korean directive. While deparment of defense(U.S.) provide a guidebook for CBM+, detailed instruction was not sufficient for Korean. Ministry of national defense(ROK) define the CBM+ by means of IPS element which should be developed along with the system development. The maintainability was barely included in Korean defense specifications, except for BIT(Built-in test) function. As a first step for defining the condition-based maintenance requirement in defense specification, this study suggests a standard form for data needed to acquire according to types of system, fault, failure, and so on. Conclusion: The empirical researches on CMB/CBM+ with domestic weapon systems are not enough, and a logic which leads the maintenance strategy to CMB/CBM+ is not solved. Through technical researches and institutional improvements including this study, we hope that condition-based maintenance would be fully established in the Korean defense field.

  • Air data systems measure airspeed, pressure altitude, angle of attack and angle of sideslip. These measurements are essential for operating flight control laws to ensure safe flights. Since the loss or corruption of air data measurements is considered as catastrophic, a high level of operational reliability needs to be achieved for air data systems. In the case of unmanned air vehicles, failure of any of air data sensors is more critical due to the absence of onboard pilot decision aid. This paper presents design of a dual redundancy air data system and the integration process for an unmanned air vehicle. The proposed dual-redundant architecture is based on two independent air data probes and redundancy management by central processing in two independent flight control computers. Starting from unit testing of single air data sensor, details are provided of system level tests used to meet overall requirements. Test results from system integration demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed process.

  • This paper introduces a Korean rescue robot and presents a whole body kinematic control strategy. The mission of the rescue robot is to move and lift patients or soldiers with impaired mobility in the battlefields, hospitals and hazardous environments. In order for a robot to rescue and assist humans, reliable mobility in various environments, large load carrying capacity, and dextrous manipulability are required. For these objects the robot has variable configuration mobile platform with tracks, dual arm manipulator, and two types of grippers. The electric actuators provide the strength to lift a wounded soldier up to 120 kg using whole body joints. To control the robot with multi degree of freedom, we need to synthesize complex whole-body behaviors, and to manage multiple task primitives systematically. We are to present a whole body kinematic control methodology, and demonstrate its effectiveness through numerical simulations.

  • The present study investigates the effect of PMMA and BN content on microstructure, mechanical and dielectric properties of silicon nitride($Si_3N_4$) ceramics in $Y_2O_3-Al_2O_3$ additive system. The total additive content was fixed at 8 wt.% and the amount of PMMA varies from 0 to 40 wt.% and BN varies from 0 to 36 wt.%, respectively. The crystalline phases of the samples were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. All the sintered sample shows complete transformation of ${\alpha}$ to ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ during the sintering process indicated that the phase transformation was unaffected by the PMMA or BN content. However, the microstructure shows that the residual porosity increased with increasing PMMA and BN content. In addition, the flexural strength and the dielectric constant decrease with addition of PMMA and BN due to the residual porosity. This article provides empirical study of design parameters for $Si_3N_4$-based radome materials.

  • Multi-object tracking (MOT) is a vital component in understanding the surrounding environments. Previous research has demonstrated that MOT can successfully detect and track surrounding objects. Nonetheless, inaccurate classification of the tracking objects remains a challenge that needs to be solved. When an object approaching from a distance is recognized, not only detection and tracking but also classification to determine the level of risk must be performed. However, considering the erroneous classification results obtained from the detection as the track class can lead to performance degradation problems. In this paper, we discuss the limitations of classification in tracking under the classification uncertainty of the detector. To address this problem, a class update module is proposed, which leverages the class uncertainty estimation of the detector to mitigate the classification error of the tracker. We evaluated our approach on the VisDrone-MOT2021 dataset, which includes multi-class and uncertain far-distance object tracking. We show that our method has low certainty at a distant object, and quickly classifies the class as the object approaches and the level of certainty increases. In this manner, our method outperforms previous approaches across different detectors. In particular, the You Only Look Once (YOLO)v8 detector shows a notable enhancement of 4.33 multi-object tracking accuracy (MOTA) in comparison to the previous state-of-the-art method. This intuitive insight improves MOT to track approaching objects from a distance and quickly classify them.
