This study investigated the antimutagenic and anticancer effects of soybean sauce (kanjang) supplemented with deep sea water and Sea Tangle. The Ames test indicated that kanjang had no mutagenicity but it significantly inhibited mutations induced by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) and 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO). Kanjang (200 ug/plate) with supplementary deep sea water and Sea Tangle had approximately 90.9% and 62.0% inhibitory effect, respectively, against mutagenesis of TA100 induced by MNNG and 4NQO. There was 61.7% inhibition of mutagenesis induced by 4NQO against the TA98 strain. Kanjang inhibited growth of cell lines of human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep3B), human gastric carcinoma (AGS), human lung carcinoma (A549), and human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) in a concentration-dependent manner. Treatment with kanjang supplemented with 1.0 mg/mL deep sea water had cytotoxicities of 69.4% 70.5% 55.6% 82.1 % and 73.2% against HeLa, Hep3B, AGS, A549 and MCF-7 cells respectively. In contrast kanjang supplemented with 1 mg/mL deep sea water had only $10{\sim}40%$ cytotoxicity on normal human embryonal kidney cells (293). Kanjang supplemented with deep sea water significantly inhibited tumor growth in mice injected sarcoma-180 cells. In particular, kanjang supplemented with deep sea water (25 mg/kg) inhibited tumor cell activity by 40.9%.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of deep sea water on fruit quality and yield of tomato. In the deep sea water treatments, fruit growth and weight were decreased as the concentration of deep sea water increased. Especially, the fresh weight of second truss was decreased significantly than first truss. Soluble solid content was increased significantly in higher concentration treatment especially at 30mM and 40mM treatment. That was increased more in the first than in the second truss fruits. Most of hexose in fruits were glucose and fructose. The reason of increased glucose and fructose contents was the decline of growth because of salinity stress by deep sea water treatment. however deep sea water treatment increased the lycopene content, especially in 20mM treatment. It is assumed that deep sea water treatment cause induction and promotion of ethylene. The higher concentration of deep sea water to the solution, the eater fruit quality improvement was noticed. However, proportional yield reduction accompanied concentration, 20mM deep sea water improved fruit quality without a significant yield reduction. The Re content was the highest among ginsenosides in all treatments. The contents total of ginsenosides in all treatments, except EC 8 treatment, was higher than those in the controlled treatment. The PT/PD value was 1.31 of the lowest in the EC 8 treatment and was 2.52 of the highest in the EC6 treatment. Rf contents in high increase was detected at all treated ginseng roots.

The major studies of an ocean circulation of the East/Japan Sea related to evaluate the feasibility and utilization of deep ocean water are reviewed. The major feature of surface current system of the East/Japan Sea is an inflow of the Tsushima Warm Current through the Korea/Tsushima Strait and the outflow through the Tsugaru and Soya Straits. The Tsushima Warm Current has been known to split into two or three branches in the southern region of the East/Japan Sea. In the cold water region of the East/Japan Sea, the North Korean Cold Current turns to the east near 39$^{\circ}$N after meeting the East Korean Warm Current, then flows eastward. The degree of penetration depends on the strength of the positive wind stress curl, according to the ventilation theory. Various current meter moorings indicate strong and oscillatory deep currents in various parts of the basin. According to some numerical experiments, these currents may be induced by pressure-topography or eddy-topography interaction. However, more investigations are needed to explain clearly the presence of these strong bottom currents. This study concludes the importance of topographical coupling, isopycnal outcropping, different wind forcing and the branching of the Tsushima Warm Current on the circulation of the East/Japan Sea.

HEMIRE is a 6,000-meter-class remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that has been developed for observation and sampling of objects of interest on the deep seabed. We first carried out deep-seabed exploration around the slopes of the Hupo Bank and the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea in June 2015. Over two weeks, a total of 10 dives were made from a support ship, the R/V Onnuri, at eight stations with water depth ranging between 194 and 2,080 m. The dive times ranged from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the operating conditions. We obtained the following results: 1) video images of the deep seafloor; 2) red snow crab density data (a major fishery resource) and inventories of deep-sea fauna, including an unrecorded organism; 3) specific topographies such as canyons slopes; 4) an undisturbed sediment core obtained using a push corer; and 5) observations of the seabed surface covered with discarded anthropogenic waste material.

A paleomagnetic investigation was carried out to analyze magnetostratigraphic information and to evaluate the relationship between paleoenvironment and magnetic properties in sedimentary sequences of piston cores recovered from the abyssal basin of the southwestern Pacific. Pateomagnetic results revealed that the sediments had a stable remanent magnetization and recorded both normal and reversal polarities. The age of sediments was from late Pliocene and Pleistocene determined by matching the polarities with the geomagnetic time scale. The sedimentation rates were in the range of 0.63-1.85 mm/$10^3$ year which were extremely low rates. The results of the paleomagnetic analyses indicated that intervals of the magnetically stable layers as well as high value of susceptibility were significantly affected by the input changes which resulted input of large-quantity materials of relatively stable magnetic carriers.
Deep sea water from the East sea was tested for breast cancer chemoprevention and metastasis by measuring the activities of cytochrome P450 1A1 and aromatase, invasiveness, and activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 in breast MDA-MB-231 cancer cell. The in vitro incubation of rat liver microsome with deep sea water (a hardness range of $100{\sim}1,000$) showed a hardness-dependent inhibition of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced cytochrome P450 1A1 activity. Deep sea water showed 27.1, 45.4 and 51.9% inhibition of microsomal aromatase activity at the hardness of 600, 800 and 1,000, respectively. In addition deep sea water inhibited not only the invasiveness of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-treated MDA-MB-231 cells through matrigel-coated membrane in a hardness-dependent manner but also the activity and expression of MMP-9 in MDA-MB-231 cell.
This study tries to give an insight for fisheries policy makers to prepare policy proposals for Early Voluntary Sectoral Liberalization(EVSL) in the fisheries sector of APEC. To do so, the paper assesses the impact of EVSL on the fisheries sector, especially, Korean Deep-See Fisheries in quantitative way using the partial equilibrium analysis of Feenstra(1995). For the use of simple analysis, the paper focuses on the impact on trade flows and welfare of the elimination of tariffs on Korean Deep-See Fisheries among several measures of EVSL. The results from the quantitative analysis of the impact of EVSL on the Korean Deep-Sea Fisheries indicate that the increase of export is moderately higher than that of import and the total welfare effect is positive, even though a certain Deep-Sea Fisheries confronts a reduction of domestic supply basis.
This paper aims to analyze the competitiveness of the Korean Deep-sea Fisheries firms in the firm level. The extant researches on this topic have been done mainly in the macro-or industry-level perspectives and depended on the quantitative analyses using the aggregated data. The results of these researches are useful to figure out the main features of the industy, however, hardly give any implications on the strategic or competitiveness-related problems in the firm level. To accomplish the research purposes this study analyzes the competitiveness of the Korean Fisheries firms on the value chain scheme using qualitative tools. Specifically this paper focuses on the industry competition characteristics, key success factors, the competitiveness, and the supporting systems and policies of the Korean Government. Data are gathered by questionaire and analyzed by factor analysis and Kruska-Wallis one-way ANOVA. The results shows that the competitiveness of the Korean Deep-sea Fisheries firms is not behind the foreign competitors. However the resource securing, the market development, R&D investment are the main obstacles to the firms. The governmental supports are kedined to improve the competitiveness of the Korean Deep-sea Fisheries firms.

The preliminary design of a deep-sea injection system for carbon dioxide ocean sequestration is performed. Common functional requirements for a deep-sea injection system of mid-depth type and lake type are determined, Liquid transport system, liquid storage system and liquid injection system are conceptually determined for the functional requirements. For liquid injection system, the control of flow rate and temperature of liquid $CO_2$ in the injection pipe is needed in the view of internal flow. The function of depressing VIV(Vortex Induced Vibration) is also required in the view of dynamic stability of the injection pipe. A case study is performed for $CO_2$ sequestration capacity of 10 million tons per year. In this study, the total number of injection ships, the flow rate of liquid $CO_2$ and the configuration of a injection pipe are designed. The static structural analysis of the injection pipe is also performed. Finally the preliminary design of a deep-sea injection system is proposed.
This experiment was conducted to study the effects of the natural deep sea water, which contained approximately 2.3% salt, and various minerals of K, Mg, Ca, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu etc, on the immune response and antioxidant activity in rats. 24 Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allotted to a control group and 3 treatment groups. Control rats were supplied with filtered tap water, and each treatment group rats were supplied with 0.5% deep sea water, 1% deep sea water and Jijangsoo, respectively, which is upper clear water separated from sediment by the clay. Feed and water were provided ad libitum throughout the experiment that lasted for 4 weeks. The results showed that 1% deep sea water group showed the highest values in weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency than those of other groups. The levels of water intake of 1%- and 0.5%-deep sea water, and Jijangsoo group were 49.1%, 22.8%, and 40.5% higher than that of control group, respectively. The Jijangsoo group rats showed that perirenal and epididymal adipose tissue weights were decreased by 32% and 25%(p<0.05), respectively, when compared to control group rats. There were no remarkable differences of serum glucose concentration among all experimental groups. However, insulin concentration of experimental groups were remarkably increased in order of Jijangsoo (4.54), 1% deep sea water (3.70), 0.5% deep sea water (3.25)(p<0.05). B cell and T cell stimulation were increased about 44.7% and 207%, respectively, by 0.5% deep sea water in comparison with control (p<0.05). TBARS values of 0.5 % deep sea water group were significantly lower than that of control(p<0.05). Catalase and SOD activities of 0.5 % deep sea water group were 200% and 47% higher than that of control, respectively. From the results, it can be concluded that the supply of natural deep sea water can slightly improve the physiological activity which modulates immune response and antioxidant activity in rats.
