  • The hydrogeochemical study on the $CO_2$-rich water in the Chojeong area was carried out. The $CO_2$-rich water of Ca-$HCO_3$type is characterized by low pH (5.0~5.8). high $CO_2$concentration ($Pco_2$$10^{0.31}$atm) and high TDS. The water chemistry indicates that the $CO_2$-rich water was probably evolved by the local suppy of deep seated $CO_2$gas resulting in the enhanced water/rock (granite) interaction under low pH conditions. High $NO_3$concentration indicates that the $CO_2$water was mixed and diluted with low $CO_2$groundwater in the vicinity of the area, in which the extensive groundwater abstraction occurred during the past years. The evoiution of the $CO_2$-rich water in the Chojeong area for the process of $CO_2$injection water/rock interaction and mixing processes was thermodynamically simulated by PHREEQC. Although the simulation was limited to water/plagioclase interaction, the results show the feasible explanation about the observed trend of pH and Ca and Na concentrations of the $CO_2$-rich water.

  • Unstable seedling stand establishment of wet direct seeding culture of rice is one of the major elements preventing the extension of its culture area. In order to develop methods of seedling stand improvement in direct seeded rice on flooded surfaces, three field experiments were conducted on silty loam soil using a cultivar 'Donjinbyeo' for three years, mainly focusing on water management after seeding and seed soaking with plant growth regulators (PGRs). Under the condition of shallow flooding after seeding, seedling stand rate increased and floating seedling rate decreased in both early and normal season seeding compared to deep flooding. With earlier draining time after seeding, there was a tendency towards preferential growth of the seminal root, increase of seedling stand and decrease of the floating seedling rate. Therefore the highest seedling numbers per unit area and the lowest floating seedling numbers were found upon drainage at 1 day after seeding (DAS), while a contrary tendency was shown upon conventional drainage at 7 DAS. Seed soaking with PGRs such as Metalaxyl or mixing of Metalaxyl with gibberellic acid (GA$_3$) significantly increased the seedling stand. In addition the effects of PGR treatment on seedling stand and the early growth of plants were greater under flooded conditions than under drained conditions after seeding, although draining of water after seeding improved the seedling establishment rate more when compared with the PGR treatment. These results suggest that draining management after seeding or maintaining of shallow flooding for a week is the most effective method to improve the seedling stand rate in wet direct seeding.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to describe the granitic regolith and frost creep phenomena in Daegwanryung area in order to demonstrate the relationship of the weathered materials and the surrounding surface, in order to point out that the characteristics of this particular complex of granitic regolith most closely resemble those of soil frost creep phenomena formed elsewhere under periglacial conditions. For this study, the writer has clarified their structure and its associated milieux, with a group of methods and techniques, field survey, micro-morphological analysis, granulometry of weathered materials etc. Such facies of granitic regolith in situ with silty heterometric materials and micas are prone to be deformed by cryo-suction as well as deep freezing. It was probably formed by cryogenic activity, or frost creep in the periglacial climate of a very cold and humid condition.

  • The bar-shaped electrode is very popular for earth construction in Korea. Copper ground rod, Deep-buried ground rod and conductive concrete ground rod are major types of the bar-shaped electrode and generally applied on the distribution system. But in most case, to obtain the targeted ground resistance is difficult, because ground resistance is very different by soil condition. Therefore, a chemicals for reducing ground resistance is applied. In this paper, the initial and the variation of ground resistance according to the applied methods and types of chemicals over one year are compared with copper ground rod applied with water and the experimental results show that the new methods with chemicals reduced not only the initial ground resistance but also the variation of ground resistance over year.

  • The concentrations of Pb, Mn, Al and Na were measured from a total of 26 snow samples collected from a 1.5-m deep snow pit in Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Ore sampling location is great concern, because of its proximity to the southern extremity of south America, a candidate for the source regions of pollutant aerosols entering Antarctica. The mean concentrations of Pb and Mn were found to be 4.97 pg g(sup)-1 and 20.6 pgg(sup)-1, respectively. These concentrations levels are similar to those reported for recent snow at other Antarctic sites with pronounced spring maxima for both metals. Contributions form natural sources are estimated to be minor (∼16%) for Pb. For Mn, on the other hand, contribution from rock and soil dusts is found to be very important. Excess Pb over Pb from natural sources is likely to be anthropogenic, especially from South Americal. Our results show that yearly Pb fallout flux is much greater in Antarctic coastal areas than at other Antarctic locations far from the coast , indicating that the transport and deposition patterns of pollutant aerosols are not simple is Antarctica. It is also suggested that the recycling of anthropogenic Pb in seawater to the atmosphere could significantly contribute to the Pb fallout flux in the Antarctic coastal regions.

  • Because of the continual occurrence of minor and moderate earthquakes in Korean peninsula, it is generally considered that Korean is not located in a safe region against probable earthquake any more, even though being recognized as a safe country in earthquake. It is in particular noted that nowadays there has been much concern about unexpected tragedy due to probable earthquake since the disaster of 1995 kobe earthquake. Thus, the objective of this research is to develop appropriate design spectrum which could be practicably used in seismic design of important structures taking into consideration of local physical characteristics. Particularly, we have to keep in mind the lessons from 1985 Mexico earthquake which had disregarded deep research on local ground conditions, being a possible magnification phenomena of ground motions in weak soil layer. Various spectra has been described based on the analysis of historical earthquakes, and generate the artificial ground acceleration. Also, rational numbers of artificial ground acceleration is investigated by the seismic analysis for skew slab bridges.

  • Prefabricated Board Drains (PBDs) recently become more widely used than conventional sand drains in improving soft ground because the PBD is more time and cost effective. The performance of PBDs is affected by disturbance in the adjacent soil formation during inserting mandrels, the intrusion of fine particles into filter fabric, and necking of the drain by excessive lateral pressure especially occurring in very deep clay formation such as the Busan New Port site. In this study, the PBD with double-core is introduced, which seems to overcome the shortcomings of usual single-core PBDs. An in-situ test program was established in the Busan New Port site, in which a set of the double-core PBDs and the single-core PBDs was installed to compare the efficiency of each of the drains. The discharge capacity of the double-core and the single-core PBDs was compared for various confining pressures in the modified Delft test and the chamber test. A series of CRS consolidation tests was performed in order to obtain profiles of void ratio-effective stress and void ratio-permeability relationships in the Busan New Port site that are used as input date in performing a numerical program ILLICON. The numerically simulated settlements of ground surface in the test site are in good agreement with those of in-situ measurements. In addition, the performance of the double-core and single-core PBDs has been experimentally and numerically compared in this paper.

  • Cocoa is a popular drink for children and contains healthy polyphenols however; a deep brown stain is left when cocoa is spilled over clothes. The main pigments in cocoa are anthocyanins that change in washing solutions with different alkalinity and metals. The removal and color changes in a cocoa stain after washing with various pH solutions and water hardness were studied. Alkalinity and the water hardness of washing solutions were important factors for the removal of cocoa stains. The removal of cocoa things in washing solutions without detergent was low (and even became negative after removal and darker) in solutions with a pH 9 and above. The cocoa stain was not removed and only the fabric color faded, although the cocoa stained cloth was washed with Korea tap water that has a pH of 7. The cocoa stain removal in detergent solutions was conspicuously higher than for only water. Even in detergent solutions, the cocoa stain removal decreased as water hardness increased. Cocoa stain removal was more effective and the color dimmest when the stained cloth was washed in a solution without the metal cations, and the bleach added with the detergent at a temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ and for longer than 20 minutes. Effective and economical equipment for tap water softening for a washing machine should be developed and used to improve cocoa stain removal.

  • A ground penetrating image radar (GPR) using an ultra wideband (UWB)impulse waveform is developed for non destructive detection of metallic pipelines buried under the ground. Dielectric constant of test field is measured and then a GPR system is designed for better detection up to 1 meter deep. By considering total path loss, volume of complete system, and resolution, upper and lower frequencies are chosen. First, a UWB impulse for the frequency bandwidth of the impulse is chosen with rising time less than 1 ns, and then compact planar UWB dipole antenna suitable for frequency bandwidth of a UWB impulse is designed. Also, to receive reflected signals, a digital storage oscilloscope is used. For measurement, a monostatic technique and a migration technique are used. For visualizing underground targets, simple image processing techniques of A-scan removal and B-scan average removal are applied. The prototype of the system is tested on a test field in wet clay soil and it is shown that the developed system has a good ability in detecting underground metal objects, even small targets of several centimeters.

  • In order to study unconsolidated sediments upstream of the Soyang Dam, seismic refraction data were recorded along five profiles of 94 m length. Receiver interval and record length were 2 m and 204 ms, respectively. Recorded data were analyzed using the traveltime tomography and delay-time methods in order to reveal sediment distribution in the investigation site. The acoustic basements are buried at approximately 14 m deep and their thickness shallows to southeast approaching to a hill. On the basement, pre-existing sediments deposited before construction of the Soyang dam lies. This sedimentary layer is composed of paleo-soil and sandy sediments. Above this layer, recent sediments comprise the top layer which is believed to have been deposited since the formation of the dam. Average thickness of this uppermost layer is approximately 1.6 m, which is much thicker than in the downstream.
