  • The Vector Random Decrement technique has been developed as an efficient method for transforming ambient responses into free decays of linear structures. It is shown that the VRD functions nay contain as much information about the modes as the really measured free decay responses. In this paper, the theory of the VRD technique is extended by applying the concept of the mode shape ratio into the Ibrahim Time Domain modal parameter identification algorithm. The VRD function is not shifted in the correction procedures for constant time shifts of the proposed VRD technique. Thus, a number of points equal to the largest of the time shifts used in the vector triggering condition are not deleted. In the VRD functions, any influence of the input to the system is averaged out. The proposed technique is compared with the traditional VRD technique by assessment of the modal parameters. The applicability of the VRD technique has been justified through a simulation study and a study of the response of a laboratory beam model subject to ambient loads.

  • This paper presents the wet damping estimation of the segmented hull model using the random decrement technique together with the continuous wavelet transform. The tested 16 sea states are grouped together based on the speed of the ship in order to figure out the possible influence of the ship speed on the damping ratio. The measured time histories of vertical bending moment for each tested sea state were processed with random decrement technique to derive the free decay signal, from which the damping ratios are estimated. Also, the autocorrelation functions of the filtered signal were calculated and comparison was made with the free decay signal obtained from the random decrement technique. Then the wet damping ratios for each sea state group, as well as precise wet natural frequencies, are estimated by using continuous wavelet transform. It turned out that the wet natural frequencies derived from the measured signal did not show any significant discrepancy compared with those obtained by wet hammering test, whereas the damping ratio did. It was considered that the discrepancy of the damping ratio between in calm and moving water may be attributed to the viscous effects caused by dramatically different flow pattern and relative velocity between the vibrating structure and surrounding fluid particles.

  • The identification of damping ratios in buildings is a well-known problem and appears to be of important and crucial interest in the safety and serviceability design. When compared to an estimation of the stiffness, i.e. natural frequency, and mass, the damping ratio is the most difficult quantity to determine. Many previous studies have examined the characteristics of damping ratios from ambient vibration, but the measurement time is roughly within 2 hours. In this paper, characteristics of damping ratios and natural frequencies of 4 story RC building were investigated using long-term ambient vibration. Free vibrations were obtained using random decrement technique, and damping ratios were evaluated by the envelop function, continuous wavelet transform, and logarithmic decrement. It was found that although the natural frequencies show little variations with time, the damping ratios show some variations with time and the largest variations found in the damping ratios obtained from the continuous wavelet transform. The damping ratios from the envelop function showed the smallest mean and standard deviation. And the probability distribution of damping ratios seems to follow the logarithmic normal distribution.

  • Total body oxygen uptake was measured in rats following hemorrhage (16 rats) and blood transfusion (7 rats) under light Nembutal anesthesia. Arterial blood Pressure measured on the tail artery decreased or increased following hemorrhage or transfusion. No direct relationship was observed between arterial blood pressure alteration and oxygen intake variation. Hematocrit ratio which changed after hemorrhage or transfusion showed a direct relationship with oxygen intake. Decrease in hematocrit ratio resulted in a decrease in oxygen intake of rats. The correlation coefficient between decrement of hematocrit ratio and decrement of oxygen intake was r=.56. The correlation coefficient between increment of hematocrit ratio and increment of oxygen intake was r=.86. Thus it was concluded that alteration in oxygen intake was limited by the systemic oxygen transport capacity of blood.

  • The objective in this research is to determine the feasibility of using changes on the dynamic properties of a reinforced concrete (RC) structure to identify different levels of seismic induced damage. Damping ratio and natural frequency changes in a RC bridge column are analyzed using different signal processing techniques like Hilbert Transforms, Random Decrement and Wavelet Transforms. The data used in the analysis was recorded during a full-scale RC bridge column shake table test. The structure was subjected to ten earthquake excitations that induced different levels of inelastic demand on the column. In addition, low-intensity white noises were applied to the column in-between earthquakes. The results obtained show that the use of the damping ratio and natural frequency of vibration as damage indicators is arguable.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Cheunggihwadamhwan (CGHDH) extract on lowering lipid, antioxidation and production of proinflammatory cytokines in rats fed on high fat diet. Methods 40 Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on high fat diet for 8 weeks and 32 rats (above 400 g) were randomly divided into 4 groups (8 mice in each group) : control group, 100 mg/Kg CGHDH group, 200 mg/Kg CGHDH group, 300 mg/Kg CGHDH group. We fed a control group of rats a basal diet and administered normal saline(100 mg/kg, 1 time/1 day) for 4 weeks. And We fed each experimental group of rats basal diet and administered an extract of Cheunggihwadamhwan extracts (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg, 1 time/1 day) for 4 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the rats were sacrificed to determine their chemical composition. We measured lipid in plasma and liver, concentration of proinflammatory cytokines, antioxidative activity and gene expression. The gene expression level was investigated by the way of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results 1. Concentration of plasma FFA, plasma TG, plasma total cholesterol and plasma LDL-cholesterol showed a significant decrement in Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. However, concentration of plasma HDL-cholesterol showed a significant increment in 200, 300 mg/kg Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. 2. Concentration of liver total cholesterol and liver TG showed a significant decrement in Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. 3. Concentration of plasma TBARS showed a significant decrement in all Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. Concentration of liver TBARS showed a significant decrement in 200, 300 mg/kg Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. Concentration of liver GSH-Px, SOD and CAT showed a tendency to decrease in all Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. 4. Concentration of plasma IL-$1{\beta}$, plasma IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ and NO, showed a tendency to decrease in all Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. Concentration of plasma IL-10 showed a tendency to increase in all Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. 5. In the analysis of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), the gene expression of Apo-B and Apo-E in the Cheunggihwadamhwan groups showed a low expression than that of control group. The ratio of Apo-B expression per $\beta$-actin expression in the showed a significant decrement in all Cheunggihwadamhwan groups. • This study focuses on the amplitude dependency of damping of tall structures by the random decrement technique (RDT). Many researchers have adopted RDT to establish the amplitude dependency of damping ratios in super-tall buildings under strong wind loads. In this study, a series of simulated examples were analyzed to examine the reliability of this method. Results show that damping ratios increase as vibration amplitudes increase in several cases; however, the damping ratios in the simulated signals were preset as constants. This finding reveals that this method and the derived amplitude-dependent damping ratio characteristics are unreliable. Moreover, this method would obviously yield misleading results if the simulated signals contain Gaussian white noise. Full-scale measurements on a super-tall building were conducted during four typhoons, and the recorded data were analyzed to observe the amplitude dependency of damping ratio. Relatively wide scatter is observed in the resulting damping ratios, and the damping ratios do not appear to have an obvious nonlinear relationship with vibration amplitude. Numerical simulation and field measurement results indicate that the widely-used method for establishing the amplitude-dependent damping characteristics of super-tall buildings and the conclusions derived from it might be questionable at the least. More field-measured data must be collected under strong wind loads, and the damping characteristics of super-tall buildings should be investigated further.

  • After measuring wind induced response for a high-rise steel building, the damping ratio and natural frequency were analyzed in this paper. In order to examine amplitude dependence, random decrement method was used. Two methods were analyzed by comparing dynamic properties from random decrement method and half powered-band width method. In addition, through serviceability evaluation during strong wind, compatibility of two methods to Japanese guidelines for the evaluation of habitability to building vibration and national building code of Canada was considered. The amplitude dependence of the damping ratio by RD method was shown and the amplitude dependence of the natural frequency was relatively very small in an aspect of engineering sense. Moreover, the measured building was satisfied with serviceability and Japanese guideline is stricter than NBCC code.

  • This paper presents the thermal problems of steel-concrete composite structure and the basic references in placing concrete into the structure. Based on the analytical investigation, application of the composite structure has the effect of highly decreasing the temperature difference between the center section and the surface section of the structure, though its application has little influence on the decrement of the maximum temperature under the same using material and placing temperature. Meanwhile, its application causes the section decrement of a concrete structure, and in the section which the decrement ratio is relatively large, the restraint action by a old concrete structure takes place highly tensile stresses over a tensile strength. And, the stress is concentrated on sharp edges of the steel-concrete boundary. Both restraint action and stress concentration considerably decrease the reduction effect of the temperature difference. Therefore, the prediction of thermal response and the reasonable steps are required through the simulation considering the factors and the sections related to those problems.

  • In this paper, the damping ratios of two methods, namely the half-power bandwidth method and random decrement method from the vibration measurement were examined. Ambient vibration tests were conducted on two steel-framed and one composite tall building ranging from 27 to 36 stories. The performance of the half-power bandwidth method was investigated using four sample sizes, such as 1024, 2048, 4096 and 8192. Damping by the half-power bandwidth method is slightly more overestimated than the random decrement method due to insufficient record length. Damping evaluation by the half-power bandwidth method was found to be enhanced when using the narrower bandwidth with long recorded data.
