  • The importance of "decoupling" to maintain economic growth and reduce greenhouse gases is emerging as the world has been mandated to reduce greenhouse gases since the 2015 Paris Agreement. This study covered 63 countries from 1980 to 2014 and analyzed the main characteristics and causes of decoupling phenomenon between economic growth and carbon emissions. In this study, the degree of decoupling was measured every five years. The analysis found that the decoupling rate of OECD countries and countries with large incomes was high, and that the decoupling phenomenon has accelerated worldwide since the 2000s. However, the degree of decoupling was different depending on the national characteristics. According to the results of dynamic panel model, the growth rate of manufacturing and the proportion of exports hampered decoupling, while the proportion of human capital and renewable energy had a positive effect on decoupling. Also income had a inverse U-shape non-linear effect on decoupling.

  • The world's sustainable growth is being severely hampered by the inefficient use of water resources. Despite the widely acknowledged importance of trade in global and regional water and food security, societal reliance on local production as well as international trade remains inadequately assessed. Therefore, using South Korea as a case study, this study fills in this research gap by applying the virtual water concept, the logarithmic mean divisia index (LMDI) method, and the Tapio decoupling model. The virtual water concept was used to estimate South Korea's net virtual water trade for major grain crops from 1992 to 2017. Then, the LMDI method was utilized to assess the driving factors causing changes in net virtual water trade. Lastly, the Tapio decoupling model was used to investigate the decoupling relationships between economic growth and the driving factors of net virtual water trade. Results showed that South Korea remains a net importer of virtual water flows with respect to grain crops, with an average import of 16,559.24 million m3 over the study period. In addition, the change in net virtual water trade could be attributed to water intensity effect, product structure effect, economic effect, and population effect. However, water intensity and economic effects were the major decisive factors for decrease and increase in net virtual water trade respectively, while the population and product structure effects had minor positive influences on the net virtual water trade. Furthermore, water intensity and economic growth showed a strong decoupling in most periods, while the decoupling state between product structure and economic growth was observed as expansive negative decoupling. Likewise, population size and economic growth showed a weak decoupling in most periods. The results reveal South Korea's status as it concerns the virtual water trade of grain crops, thus providing valuable insights into the sustainability of trade activities for the management of local water resources.

  • Some OECD countries are showing signs of decoupling in the transportation sector. In terms of sustainable development, the decoupling of economic activities and greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector is very important. This study calculated a decoupling index of greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector for 25 OECD countries. Also this study analyzed the impact of energy transition on decoupling regimes. According to the analysis, a considerable number of countries have reached the decoupling phase, and some countries have shown strong decoupling regime in which greenhouse gas emissions are reduced despite economic growth. From ordered panel logit analysis, energy transition had significant impact on achieving decoupling phase. Electrification of transport had a positive effect on the decoupling, while the gasification was not significant. In addition, small traffic, high urbanization rates, strong environmental policies, and high trade opening have had significant effects on achieving decoupling.

  • Purpose - This study analyzed the decoupling phenomenon between energy consumption and economic growth in Korea from 1990 to 2021. The main purpose of this study is to suggest policy implications for achieving a low-carbon society and decoupling that Korea must move forward in the face of the climate change crisis. Design/methodology/approach - This study investigated the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth by energy source and sector using the energy-EKC (EEKC) hypothesis which included the energy consumption on the traditional Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), and the impulse response function (IRF) model based on Bayesian vector auto-regression (BVAR). Findings - During the analysis period, the trend of decoupling of energy consumption and economic growth in Korea is confirmed starting from 1996. However, the decoupling tendency appeared differently depending on the differences in energy consumption by sources and fields. The results of the IRF model using data on energy consumption by source showed that the impact of GDP and renewable energy consumption resulted in an increase in energy consumption of bio and waste, but a decrease in energy consumption by sources, and the impact of trade dependence was found to increase the consumption of petroleum products. Research implications or Originality - According to the main results, efficient distribution by existing energy source is required through expansion of development of not only renewable energy but also alternative energy. Additionally, in order to increase the effectiveness of existing energy policies to achieve carbon neutrality, more detailed strategies by source and sector of energy consumption are needed.

  • This paper aims at identifying the factors that have influenced changes in the level of industrial $CO_2$ emissions. By means of complete decomposition method the observed changes are analyzed into five different factors: output level, energy intensity, energy mix and structural change and utility use. The application study refers to the manufacturing sectors in Korea. Moreover, this paper discusses the relationship between Korea's manufacturing $CO_2$ emission and economic growth (as measured by GDP), investigating whether economic growth is decoupling from $CO_2$ emission.

  • This paper investigates the level of decoupling between greenhouse gas emissions and economic growth in Korea. Despite previous studies mainly stressed the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, the lack of investigations in the level of decoupling constraints further policy suggestions. This study analyzes the level of decoupling in the short- and long-term, focusing on short-term volatility of GHG emissions income elasticity. In the long run, there is no decoupling in Korea because a robust causal relationship exists between GHGs, GDP, and fossil fuels. However, the short-term volatility is clearly identified under the long-term equilibrium(coupling), indicating there is the relative decoupling in the short run. The results show that fossil fuel dependence is a significant factor that increases short-term volatility(decoupling) and breaks the causal link(coupling) between GHGs and GDP.

  • Sustainable resource management(SRM) is regarded as the core strategy to achieve Dematerialisation and Decoupling of economic growth from the use of natural resources and environmental degradation. This paper presents status SRM policy and research in worldwide, and analyzes decoupling of economic activity from energy consumption of domestic manufacturing, using decoupling factor. Also This paper suggests methodologies and strategies of SRM in Korea. SRM is established through various analysis and survey as following; forecasting of resource demand, material flow analysis and value chain analysis, resource market structure analysis. Through these analysis, we can obtain hot-spot and solution of environmental burden, recycling market management, recycling technology and best-optimal supply rate of primary and secondary resource. In Korea, resource management system must be linked with national and regional material flow analysis, and it is necessary to make SRM-law of national dimension for effective run of sustainable resource management system.

  • This study examines the 'Asia Decoupling' hypothesis, focusing on changes in trade patterns between regions and countries, based on the latest value added trade statistics. As an analytical tool, indicators that can directly measure the degree of distribution of actual value added were used. Main findings are: Firstly, creating potential at regional level which used to be the growth engine of East Asia until the mid-2000s declined sharply after the global financial crisis. Secondly, in the development pattern of the value added distribution network, no positive change has been detected in the give-out or gain capacity of emerging countries that can generate future growth in East Asia through GVC development. Lastly, China's value added contributing capacity, as different from the hub countries in other regions such as US and Germany, has declined significantly since the mid 2000s, while its capability to benefit greatly increased, and the gain potential of advanced group countries in competition with China is decreasing. We suggest the establishment of intra-regional economic cooperation mechanism including all countries in East Asia for expanding the value creating capacity in the region.

  • Crack-controlled blasting method which utilizes notched charge hole has been proposed in order to achieve smooth fracture plane and minimize the excavation damage zone. In this study, the blast models, which have a notched charge hole, were analyzed using dynamic fracture process analysis software to investigate the effect of the geometry of a notched charge hole and decoupling indexes of the charge hole on crack growth control in blasting. As a result, crack extension increased and damage crack decreased with the notch length. Ultimately, stress increment factors and resultant fracture patterns with different notch length and width were analyzed in order to examine the effect factors on the crack growth controlling in rock blasts using a notched charge hole.

  • Metal oxide varistors (MOVs) protect circuits and devices from transient overvoltages in electric power systems. However, a MOV continuously deteriorates owing to manufacturing defects or repetitive protective operations from transient overvoltages. A deteriorated MOV may result in a short circuit or a line-ground accident. Previous studies focused on the analysis of deterioration mechanisms and condition diagnosis techniques for MOVs owing to their recent growth of use. An accelerated deterioration experiment under the same conditions in which a MOV operates is essential. In this study, we designed and fabricated a surge generator that can apply a surge current to a MOV connected to AC mains. The coupling network operates at a low impedance against the surge current from the surge generator and transfers the surge current to the MOV under test. It also acts as a high impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage not to be applied to the surge generator. The decoupling network operates at a high impedance against the surge current and blocks the surge current from AC mains. It also acts as a low impedance against AC mains for the AC voltage to be applied to the MOV under test. The prototype surge generator can apply the 8/20 us up to 15 kA on AC voltages in the approximate range of 110~450 V, and it fully operates on a LabVIEW-based program.
