The present work aimed to study the decolorization kinetics and characteristics of a selected azo dye under the influence of two key operational parameters including hydraulic retention time (HRT) and solid retention time (SRT). The decolorization efficiency and the two important criteria of k and normalized k (k/MLSS) were evaluated in lab-scale membrane sequencing batch reactors (MSBRs) at various HRTs of 48, 24 and 16 h (with constant SRT) and in addition, at various SRTs of infinity, 40 and 10 d (with constant HRT). According to the obtained results, both zero and first-order kinetics were properly fitted the decolorization profiles of the selected azo dye in all of the applied HRTs and SRTs. Increase of both HRT and SRT positively affected the decolorization efficiency. More MLSS concentrations corresponded to the lower HRTs and the higher SRTs resulted in higher decolorization rate constants (k). However, the effect of reducing the HRT was not compensated by increase of the MLSS concentration in order to reach higher decolorization efficiency. In addition, increase of the decolorization efficiency, as a consequence of the higher MLSS concentrations at longer SRTs, was restrained by decrease of the time-limited decolorization capability of biomass (represented by normalized k). Evaluation of both k and normalized k is suggested in order to have a more precise study on the decolorization kinetics and characteristics.
More attention has been paid to the research on decolorization of dyeing wastewater nowadays. In this study, an investigation into the decolorization of dyeing wastewater was conducted using a combination of coagulant, carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC) and coagulant aid, polyscrylamide (PAM). The factors influencing the decolorization efficiency, such as pH value, coagulant and the dosages of coagulant, were discussed. The results showed that using PAM as coagulant aid could reach a high decolorization efficiency compared with using NOCC alone. The optimal conditions were pH 2.3, 480 mg/L for NOCC, and 4-8 mg/L for PAM. Under the optimum conditions, the rate of decolorization could achieve 99%, and the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) could achieve 90%. In addition, the membrane processes with chitosan/rare-earth-metals could enhance the decolorization rate of Direct Black FF to 94.7%, and Indanthren Red F3B to 98.2%, respectively.
Strains degrading and decolorizing acid dyes, Nylosan red E-BL 150%. were isolated from natural system, was named as ARK3. The optimal culture conditions of temperature and pH were $35^\circ{C}$, 7.0, respectively. Growth rate of cells in conditions of aerobic shaking more than standing culture conspicuously increased, and optical density of those to strain ARK3 were found as 1.38 and 0.25 after 42 hrs. Decolorization efficiency in batch culture which used as immobilization media to natural zeolite was 15% after 6 hrs, while suspension culture was 5%, also its of immobilization and suspension culture were 90% and 85% after 48 hrs, respectively. Decolorization efficiency of air-lift bioreactor was more than 90% to a dilution rate of $0.038hr^{-1}$, but that was decreased as 70%, when the dilution rate was $0.05hr^{-1}$. Even though at maximum dilution rate of this study, there was not appeared "wash out" phenomienon of biomass. Decolorization efficiency was 97.7% at a dilution rate of $0.025hr^{-1}$, when influent dye concentration was $100mg/\ell$. But if influent dye concentration increased as $150mg/\ell$, even though MLVSS increased, that of treatment water decreased as 93%. Also, when influent dye concentration increased as $200mg/\ell$ and $300mg/\ell$, decolorization efficiencies of treatment water abruptly decreased as 85% and 63%, respectively. Decolorization efficiency was more than 92% to the limit volumetric loading rate of $3.75mg/\ell\cdot{hr}$hr, without regard to variation of influent dye concentration or hydraulic retention time. if volumetric loading rate was more than $3.80mg/\ell\cdot{hr}$, at same condition, decolorization efficiency was lower decrease of retention time than increase of influent dye concentration.entration.
In order to decolorize disperse dyes by using biological treatment process, a strain which has potential ability to degrade disperse dyes was isolated from natural system. To increase the removal efficiency of decolorization in the aqueous solutions, the optimal condition of decolorization by this strain was investigated, and continuous plant test was also developed. The optimal culture conditions of temperature and pH were found to be 4$0^{\circ}C$ and 8.5~9, respectively. When yeast extract was mixed with polypeptone at the mixing ratio of 1:1 as a nitrogen source, decolorization efficiency was highest(93%) among the nitrogen sources. The strain to be screened was excellent to adjust to pH, and it seems to be have ability to control pH needed to growth. The optimal culture conditions in concentration of $MgSO_4\cdot{7H}_2O$ and $KH_2PO_4$ were 0.1%(w/v) and 0.2%(w/v). The result of continuous plant process using wastewater was as following : $COD_{Mn}$ removal efficiency was over than 50%, and this strain was very excellent in decolorization-efficiency for the wastewater of Taegu dyeing complex.
Caprolactam is the most important raw material for making Nylon 6 fibers and its quality directly determines the quality of Nylon. So it is necessary to study the techniques and methods to remove the colorful impurities from caprolactam. In this paper, the decolorization of caprolactam aqueous solution by anion exchange resins was studied and the decoloring abilities of five commercial resins were investigated. The regeneration of the resins was also studied, too. This study shows that the resin AMTX202 have excellent decoloring ability in the column experiment and that the decoloring efficiency is correlated with the volume of resins packed and is slightly affected by the flow rate and regenerating times. The fact that the resins can be regenerated and reused without affecting the efficiency of decolorization will decrease the cost of the treatment and operation in the industry. The adsorption of colored compounds with anion exchange resins in the packed columns seems to be technically feasible.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performances of zero-valent iron (ZVI) combined SBR (Z-SBR) process in decolorization and organic removal of synthetic dye wastewater. The batch test for optimizing the operation parameters of ZVI column showed that the appropriate EBCT was around 11 min and the pH of the dye wastewater was below 7.0. During the step increase of influent color unit from 300 to 1,000cu, about 53 to 79% decolorization efficiency could be achieved in control SBR (C-SBR, without ZVI column), which resulted from destroying azo bond of synthetic dye in anaerobic condition. For the same influent color loading, Z-SBR showed always higher decolorization efficiency than C-SBR with an aid of ZVI reducing power. The TCOD concentration in Z-SBR effluent was 20-30mg/L lower than C-SBR effluent although the TCOD before and after ZVI column was nearly same. It means that breakdown of azo bond by ZVI reducing power could increase biodegradability of synthetic dye wastewater.
The concept for the decolorization in biological dye wastewater treatment systems is based on anaerobic treatment, for the reductive cleavage of the dyes' azo linkages, in combination with aerobic treatment, for the degradation of the products from azo dye cleavage, aromatic amines. Batch tests were conducted to examine the conditions and the factors affecting biological treatment of dye wastewater. From the tests, the removal efficiencies of organics and colors of dyeing wastewater were improved to $COD_{Cr}$ 27% and color 9% by injecting 10% of the domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate, and $COD_{Cr}$ 30%, color 22% with 30% injection of domestic wastewater. Therefore it was proved that decolorization efficiency is demonstrated with domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate. The analysis of aromatic amines in wastewater showed that decolorization was achieved by cometabolism while aromatic amines were produced by cleavage of azo bonds under anaerobic conditions and these products were removed in an aerobic tank subsequently.
Two culture modes, continuous and semi-continuous, of the decolorization fungus, Geotrichum candidum Dec 1, were compared to obtain a high treatment efficiency of molasses decolorization and a large productivity of peroxidase (DyP) to simultaneously decolorize dyes and molasses. The continuous culture of G. candidum Dec 1 using a 5-I jar-fermentor showed high DyP activity at a low dilution ratio of $0.005h^{-1}$, and decolorization ratio of molasses of 80% was obtained concomitantly. Therefore, a semi-continuous culture was performed by repeated refill and draw. In this mode, approximately 1.5 liters of the culture broth was replaced per cycle when the decolorization ratio of molasses was near 80%. The molasses medium (1.0 liter per day) was treated and the peroxidase productiveity in the drawn culture broth was 26.6U/day, whereas the peroxidase productiveity was 17.9U/day in the continuous culture with a dilution rate of $0.005h^{-1}$. The semi-continuous treatment system was an efficient decolorization method for the strain, G. candidum Dec 1.
The degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water was investigated in laboratory-scale experiments, using five advanced oxidation Processes (AOPs) $UV/H_2O_2$, lenten, photo-lenten, $UV/TiO_2,\;UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$. The photodegradation experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed photoreactor equipped with an immersed 32 W UV-C lamp as light source. initial decolorization rate and COD removal efficiency were evaluated and compared. The results obtained showed that the initial decolorization rate constant was quite different for each oxidation process. The relative order of decolorization was: photo-fenton > $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ > fenton > $UV/H_2O_2$ > $UV/TiO_2$ > UV > $H_2O_2$. The relative order of COD removal was different from decolorization: photo-fenten ${\fallingdotseq}$$UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2\;>\;UV/TiO_2\;>\;fenton\;>\;UV/H_2O_2$. The Photo-lenten and $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ processes seem to be appropriate for decolorization and COD removal of dye wastewater.
