  • In this paper, a VlSI architecture for Reed-Solomon (RS) decoder based on the Berlekamp algorithm is proposed. The proposed decoder provided both erasure and error correcting capability. In order to reduc the chip area, we reformulate the Berlekamp algorithm. The proposed algorithm possesses a recursive structure so that the number of cells for computing the errata locator polynomial can be reduced. Moreover, in our approach, only one finite field multiplication per clock cycle is required for implementation, provided an improvement in the decoding speed, and the overall architecture features parallel and pipelined structure, making a real time decoding possible. From the performance evaluation, it is concluded that the proposed VLSI architecture is more efficient in terms of VLSI implementation than the rcursive architecture based on the Euclid algorithm.

  • This paper presents a Dijkstra's-search-based sphere decoding (SD) algorithm with limited complexity for the symbol detection in MIMO communication systems. The Dijkstra search-based SD is efficient to achieve a near-optimal error rate in the MIMO symbol detection, but has a critical problem in that its complexity is variable and can correspond to that of the exhaustive search in the worst case. The proposed algorithm limits the computations while achieving a near-optimal error rate. Simulation results show that the error rate is near optimal even with the limited complexity.

  • The conventional decoding procedure for the images encoded using fractal contractive transformation algorithms is performed by applying the transformations iteratively for an arbirary initial image. In this paper, we showed that the atractor image can be obtained analytically when the image is encoded using the fractal algorithm proposed by Monro and Dudbridge, in which the corresponding domain block for a range block is fixed. Using the analytical formula, we can obtain the attractor image without iteration procedure. Computer simulation results for various test images show that we can increase the image decoding speed by more than five times when we use the analytical formula compared to the previous iteration methods. Also we confirmed that the real time decoding by software on PD is possible for the moving picture with QCIF formats.

  • In this paper, we first review LDPC codes in general and a belief propagation algorithm that works in logarithm domain. LDPC codes, which is chosen for second generation digital video broadcasting standard, are required a large number of computation due to large size of coded block and iteration. Therefore, we presented two kinds of low computational algorithm for LDPC codes. First, sequential decoding with partial group is proposed. It has same H/W complexity, and fewer number of iteration's are required at same performance in comparison with conventional decoder algerian. Secondly, early detection method for reducing the computational complexity is proposed. Using a confidence criterion, some bit nodes and check node edges are detected early on during decoding. Through the simulation, we knew that the iteration number are reduced by half using subset algorithm and computational complexity of early detected method is about $50\%$ offs in case of check node update, $99\%$ offs in case of check node update compared to conventional scheme.

  • We propose a new adaptive K-best Sphere Decoding (SD) algorithm for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems where the number of survivor paths, K is changed based on the characteristics of path metrics which contain the instantaneous channel condition. In order to overcome a major drawback of Maximum Likelihood Detection (MLD) which exponentially increases the computational complexity with the number of transmit antennas, the conventional adaptive K-best SD algorithms which achieve near to MLD performance have been proposed. However, they still have redundant computation complexity since they only employ the channel fading gain as a channel condition indicator without instantaneous Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) information. hi order to complement this drawback, the proposed algorithm use the characteristics of path metrics as a simple channel indicator. It is found that the ratio of the minimum path metric to the other path metrics reflects SNR information as well as channel fading gain. By adaptively changing K based on this ratio, the proposed algorithm more effectively reduce the computation complexity compared to the conventional K-best algorithms which achieve same performance.

  • An iterative soft-decision decoding algorithm of block codes is proposed. With careful examinations of the first hard-decision decoding result, the candidate codewords are efficiently searched for. An approach to reducing decoding complexity and lowering error probability is to select a small number of candidate codewords. With high probability, we include the codewords which are at the short distance from the received signal. The decoder then computes the distance to each of the candidate codewords and selects the codeword which is the closest. We can search for the candidate codewords which make the error patterns contain the bits with small reliability values. Also, we can reduce the cases that we select the same candidate codeword already searched for. Computer simulation results are presented for (23,12) Golay code. They show that decoding complexity is considerably reduced and the block error probability is lowered.

  • In this paper, a modified sum-product algorithm to correct bit errors captured within the trapping sets, which are produced in decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, is proposed. Unlike the original sum-product algorithm, the proposed decoding method consists of two stages. Whether the main cause of decoding failure is the trapping sets or not is determined at the first stage. And the bit errors within the trapping sets are corrected at the second stage. In the modified algorithm, the set of failed check nodes and the transition patterns of hard-decision bits are exploited to search variable nodes in the trapping sets. After inverting information of the variable nodes, the sum-product algorithm is carried out to correct the bit errors. As a result of simulation, the proposed algorithm shows continuously improved error performance with increase in the signal-to-noise ratio. It is, therefore, considered that the modified sum-product algorithm significantly reduces or possibly eliminates the error floor in LDPC codes.

  • Instead of using sphere decoding, list sphere decoding (LSD) has been introduced to increase the reliability of log-likelihood ratio (LLR) in recent soft decoding schemes employing iterative detection and decoding (IDD). Although LSD provides improved performance, it does not obtain complexity gain due to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increment as it detects large number of lattice points. Especially, its inefficient scenario arises when it has to search for lattice points which have small affect for obtaining LLR with high reliability. In this paper, we study an efficient algorithm to remove such lattice points, which results in complexity reduction based on radius optimization.

  • The decoding method using covering polynomials is an extended form of error-trapping decoding, and is a simple and effective means to implement decoders for cyclic codes. Covering polynomials can be used for soft-decision decoding as well as for decoding beyond the bounded distance of the code. The implementation complexity is proportional to the number of covering polynomials employed. In this paper, the soft-decision decoding procedure using covering polynomials is described, and the procedure is applied to the [23,12] Golay code. A new set of covering polynomials is derived for the procedure, which is presented as a generalized closed-form solution. The set can be efficiently utilized for decoding a class of cyclic codes including the Golay code. Computer simulation of the described procedure is performed to show the trade-offs between the decoder performance and complexity. It is demonstrated that soft-decision decoding of the Golay code using the derived set of covering polynomials has less than 0.2dB deviation from the optimal performance of maximum-likelihood decoding, with a reduced complexity when compared to the Chase Algorithm 2 combined with hard-decision decoding that has nearly identical performance.

  • Compressed sensing is a signal processing technique for efficiently acquiring and reconstructing in an under-sampled (i.e., under Nyquist rate) representation. A block compressed sensing with projected Landweber (BCS-SPL) framework is most widely known, but, it has high computational complexity at decoder side. In this paper, by introducing adaptive exit criteria instead of fixed exit criteria to SPL framework, an effective fast algorithm is designed in such a way that it can utilize efficiently the sparsity property in DCT coefficients during the iterative thresholding process. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm results in the significant reduction of the decoding time, while providing better visual qualities than conventional algorithm.
