Objectives: The purposes of this study were to examine the contribution of each of the Transtheoretical Model components in explaining stages of smoking cessation and to identify factors associated with the smoking cessation behavior among Korean college students. Methods: The participants for this study were 334 undergraduate students who enrolled in general education courses. Self-report surveys were distributed and returned. The survey variables comprised the stages of change for smoking cessation, self-efficacy, decisional balances and processes of change in smoking cessation. Results: Significant differences were noted in the five stages of change for self-efficacy, decisional balance, and the processes of change. The strongest factor associated with the smoking cessation behavior was self-efficacy. Conclusion: Study findings indicate application of the Transtheoretical Model may be useful to enhance future smoking cessation efforts in college students. The strategies to enhance smoking cessation self-eficacy in college students will be an important intervention component in future studies.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of public health center smoking cessation counseling program using the transtheoretical model on the process of change, smoking temptation, decisional balance and stage change transition. Methods: A nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used for this study. The study population was 115 adult smokers. The counseling program was administered to the experimental group and a smoking cessation program from the Korean Ministry of Health & Welfare was administered to the control group. Descriptive analysis, $\chi^2-test$, t-test, and ANCOVA were used with the SPSS 12.0 program to analyze the data. Results: After treatment with this program, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores for process of change (t=4.148, p<.001), smoking temptation (t=-2.988, p=.003), and stage change transition ($\chi^2=5.871$, p=.031) compared to the control group. Experimental group members also showed significantly lower score for Pros of smoking (t=-3.151, p=.002). Conclusion: The findings indicate that this program could have positive effect on process of change, smoking temptation, decisional balance and stage transition for adult smokers. Based on these findings, the authors suggest additional counseling program focusing on smokers in specific stages.
Background: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of perceived parental attitudes on children's discernment of cigarettes. Materials and Methods: The study sample consisted of 250 children attending grades 6, 7 and 8. Data were collected via a socio-demographic survey questionnaire, the Parental Attitude Scale (PAS) and the Decisional Balance Scale (DBS). Data analysis covered percentages, medians, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc tests using a statistical package. Results: There were 250 participants; 117 were male, 133 were female. The mean age was $13.1{\pm}0.98$ for the females and $13.3{\pm}0.88$ for the males. A statistically significant difference was found in the children's mean scores for 'pros' subscale on the Decisional Balance Scale (DBS) according to perceived parental attitudes (F=3.172, p=0.025). There were no statistically significant differences in the DBS 'cons' subscale scores by perceived parental attitudes. Conclusions: It was determined that while perceived parental attitudes affect children's views on advantages of smoking, they have no effect on children's views on its disadvantages.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare variables related to weight control between normal weight and overweight/obese female adolescents. Methods: This study is a supplementary analysis using a total of 293 female adolescents in Seoul. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires on the topics of stages of change, processes of change, and the decisional balance pertaining to weight control. Body weight and height were also measured. Results: There was a significant difference in the stages of change between the normal weight and overweight/obese groups. Of 12 processes of change, 9 processes were significantly higher in the overweight/obese group than in the normal weight groups. Also, female adolescents who were overweight or obese had significantly higher pros and eating efficacy scores comparing to those in the normal weight group. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that overweight/obese female adolescents, especially those in the action stage need supports to continue their weight control behaviors. In addition, a weight control program for female adolescents should emphasize their participation in physical activities in addition to their dietary control efforts.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a smoking cessation program on processes of change, situational temptation, and decisional balance in male university student smokers. Method: Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, 78 male university students consisted of an experimental group (n=48) and a control group (n=30). A smoking cessation program was applied to the experimental group for a period of 6 months while no program was given to the control group. Study questionnaires were used to measure outcome variables before and after the program. Descriptive analysis, $\chi^2$-test, t-test, and ANCOVA were used with SPSS 18.0 program for data analysis. Results: After treatment with this program, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores for processes of change (experiential and behavioral processes of change) than the control group. The experimental group also showed significantly lower scores for situational temptation (positive social, negative affect, and habit strength). Conclusion: The smoking cessation program may have positive effects on process of change and smoking temptation for male university student smokers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe stage distribution of current and former smokers and to analyze significant variables that used by adolescents at each stage using the Transtheoretical Model. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed with 145 students attended to five high schools in one rural area. The survey instruments included stages and processes of change. decisional balance, self-efficacy, and knowledge related to smoking. Results: Among the participants, 47.6% were in the precontemplation and contemplation stages, 20.7% were in the preparation stage, and the other 31.7% were in the action and maintenance stages. Analysis of variance tests revealed that behavioral processes, pros and cons of smoking, and self-efficacy were significantly associated with the stages of smoking cessation, while among 10 processes of change, self-reevaluation, self-liberation, and reinforcement management were significantly different by the stages. Conclusions: The study results suggest that smoking cessation programs should emphasize behavioral strategies, self-efficacy, and decisional balance to help students adopt and maintain smoking cessation.
Purpose: This study aimed to develop an app-based self-management program based on the transtheoretical model (TTM) for breast cancer survivors' exercise practice, as well as to investigate the program's effects on the stage of change for exercise, exercise self-efficacy, exercise decisional balance, exercise amount, and body composition. Methods: This non-randomized controlled study included 52 participants (26 in each of the experimental and control groups, respectively). An app-based self-management program based on the TTM was conducted with the experimental group for a 12-week period. The program comprised three components: individual coaching for each stage of change for exercise based on TTM, amount of exercise and body composition monitoring, and online self-help meetings. Results: Compared with the control group, the experimental group had significantly higher stages of change for exercise (p < .001), exercise self-efficacy (p < .001), exercise decisional balance (p = .002), exercise amount (p < .001), and body composition (body weight [p = .006], body mass index [p = .005], and body fat percentage [p = .010]) immediately and four weeks after the intervention. Conclusion: An app-based self-management program based on the TTM improves exercise behaviors in breast cancer survivors and provides physical benefits.
Objectives: Recent studies have shown that tailoring to women's individual beliefs and stage of cancer screening adoption increase the probability that cancer screening will ensue. To identify variables associated with cancer screening behavior, many studies for cancer screening have used the Transtheoretical Model(TTM). This study was carried out to identity the cognitive and behavioral factors associated with breast cancer screening by stages of change among women, forties aged. Methods: Building on the TTM constructs, we collected the data to test the association with cognitive and behavioral factors for breast cancer screening by stage of change among women, forties aged (N=232), using the self-reported questionnaire. The stages of change were grouped according to screening participation and intention for breast cancer as precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. We found out the association between breast cancer screening and cognitive and behavioral factors, and testified the difference between stages of change by chi-square test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple comparison analysis(Duncan test). Results: Analyses of 232 women showed that participation on mammography was 68.1% within lifetime and 46.1% within last 2 years, and we found out the association with breast cancer screening participation, intention and cognitive-behavioral factors. The stages of change based on participation and intention were different from the decisional balance, the screening attitude, and the self-efficacy(p<0.01). The decisional balance was differ from stages of change because the difference on opinions about pros(positives) and cons(negative) were likely to significant by stages of change(p<0.05, p<0.01). Conclusion: To increase the screening rate for breast cancer, it should be developed the tailored message and recommend guideline. And the tailored message should be designed to increase the pros of breast cancer screening(mammography) and to decrease the cons, and considered the woman's stage of adoption.

Purpose: This study examined the influencing factors from the Transtheoretical Model on the stage of change in the self-management behaviors, i.e. regular physical activity and diet, among community-residing adults with hypertension in a rural area. Methods: With a cross-sectional descriptive design, 134 adults who had registered and received a prescription for hypertension medication from a public health center in W city were recruited using convenient sampling. The instrument was an interviewer-administered questionnaire on the stage of change, process of change, self-efficacy, and decisional balance of physical activity and diet. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, 2-sample t-test, ${\chi}^2$ test, and logistic regression. Results: The results revealed significant differences in the process of change, self-efficacy, and decisional balance of physical activity and diet between those who were in the pre-execution stage (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation) and those who were in the execution stage (action and maintenance). Logistic regression showed that consciousness raising and self-efficacy were significant predictors of the execution stage in physical activity, and self-reevaluation, social liberation and self-efficacy were significant predictors in the diet. Conclusion: The relevant processes of change, differentiated according to the stage of change, along with self-efficacy, should be addressed to enhance the execution of self-management behaviors among hypertensive adults residing in the community.
Purpose: The study was performed to identify the process of change, decisional balance and self-efficacy corresponding to the stage of exercise behavior change based on a Transtheoretical Model in middle aged women. Method: The subjects consisted of 317 women by convenience sampling residing in city B. The collected data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Discriminant analysis by SPSS/WIN program. Result: The subjects were distributed in each stage of change of exercise behaviors: 53 subjects (16.7%) in the precontemplation stage, 86 subjects (27.1%) in the contemplation stage, 88 subjects (27.8%) in the preparation stage, 51 subjects (16.1%) in the action stage and 39 subjects(12.3%) in the maintenance stage. Analysis of variance showed that consciousness raising (F=24.96, p=.00), environmental reevaluation (F=7.l3, p=.00), self reevaluation (F=19.47, p=.00), dramatic relief (F=15.22, p=.00), social liberation (F=4.26, p=.00), counter conditioning (F=26.44, p=.00), a helping relationship (F=13.l7, p=.00), reinforcement management (F=21.25, p=.00), self liberation (F=27.70, p=.00), stimulus control (F=13.49, p=.00), pros (F=14.40, p=.00) and self-efficacy (F=39.9l, p=.00) were significantly associated with the stages of change of exercise behaviors. Through discriminant analysis, it was found that ‘stimulus control’ was the most influential variable in discriminating the five stages of change. Conclusion: This study can provide the basis of a staged matching exercise program using TTM for more effective and useful intervention.
