  • The photovoltaic industry is one of the main research areas for regenerable energy usage and green growth policy of the Korean government. R&D programs of MEST(Ministry of Education, Science and Technology) and MKE(Ministry of Knowledge Economy) are concentrating on the development of fundamental and applicable technology which can be carried out by a so-called "Big company" consortium. So it is essential to discover and support R&D projects for small and medium enterprises(SMEs) in the photovoltaic industry. R&D projects should be funded effectively to enhance the competitiveness of the SMEs. It is a complicated process as to decide what R&D projects or key element technologies should be selected and how to support them. In this paper, the supply chain analysis is adopted as a critical tool for selecting the research areas and topics for the SMEs, which can be done by analyzing the number of the SMEs, the level of imports and the localization possibility for each supply chain element. We define the strategic products for the SMEs to deduct core technologies for each strategic product. R&D projects definition sheets are proposed for each core technology. All the decision making processes are authorized by a committee which consists of experts for academia, industries and the research field. The efficacy of the proposed framework is described throughout the photovoltaic industry.

  • The level of service (LOS) of the Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) has been used as a basic criterion at decision making processes for signalized intersections in Korea. The KHCM provides five steps for the signalized intersection analysis. Among them, lane grouping, which is the third step, significantly influence the final LOS. The current method presented in the KHCM, however, classifies a shared lane as a de facto turning lane group, even though the turning traffic of the shared lane is few. Thus, this research was initiated to provide an alternative. To this end, three alternatives were suggested, including the method based on the lane grouping presented in the U.S. Highway Capacity Manual, the method using turning ratio of shared turning lane, and the method using a threshold traffic volume in lane grouping. The feasibilities of the three methods were evaluated using a calibrated CORSIM model. Conclusively, the method using a threshold traffic volume in lane grouping outperformed.

  • The needs for reusable 3D visualization tool has been being raised in various industries. Especially in the defense modeling and simulation (M&S) domain, there are abundant researches about reusable and interoperable visualization system, since it has a critical role to the efficient decision making by offering diverse validation and analyzing processes. To facilitate the effectiveness, states-of-the-arts M&S systems are applying VR (Virtual Reality) or AR (Augmented Reality) technologies. To reduce the work burden authors design a collaborative visualization environment based on a commercial game engine Unity3D. We define the requirements of the warfare simulation by analyzing pros and cons of existing tools and engines such as SIMDIS or Vega, and apply functionalities of the commercial game engine to satisfy the requirements. A prototype has been implemented as the collaborative visualization environment of iCAVE at KAIST, which is a facility for immersive virtual environment. The facility is intraoperative with smart devices.

  • We are dealing with the Bayes' rule education tool with Excel Macro and its usage example. When an event occurs, we are interested in whether it does under certain conditions or not. In this case, we use the Bayes' rule to calculate the probability. Bayes' rule is very useful in making decision based on newly obtained statistical information. We introduce an efficient self-teaching educational tool developed to help the learners understand the Bayes' rule through intermediate steps and descriptions. The concept and examples of intermediate steps such as conditional probability, multiplication rule, law of total probability, prior probability and posterior probability could be acquired through step-by-step learning. All the processes leading to result are given with diagrams and detailed descriptions. By just clicking the execution button, users could get the results in one screen.

  • Given the rapid growth of social network services (SNS) such as Facebook and Cyworld, it is important to understand SNS users' decision-making processes such as purchasing and continuance intention. Especially, as a number of SNS providers such as Cyworld and Habbo Hotel recognize the sales of digital items as the main source of their profits, it is critical to in-depth understand SNS users' purchasing behaviors. In this regard, this study explores continued usage behaviors and purchase behaviors of digital items in an SNS environment using a longitudinal research method. This paper develops a theoretical model to deeply understand the key drivers of purchase behavior of digital items through constructs prescribed by two established research streams on information systems, namely continuance usage and habitual usage. Moreover, this study examines the effects of actual and ideal self-image congruity on SNS continuance intention and habit. The research model was tested by using survey data collected from 307 users who have experience with Cyworld. The analysis results show that SNS actual usage directly influence purchase behavior of digital items. SNS users' continuance intention and habit are key drivers to enhance the level of actual usage of the SNS. Both actual and ideal self-image congruity play a key role in enhancing continuance usage and habitual usage. The implication of research and discussions provides reference for SNS providers in marketing and IT strategy.

  • Sinkholes happen in increasingly higher frequency in downtown areas with a concentration of social infrastructure these days. Most sinkholes occur around the living areas of citizens, which calls for a systematic countermeasure plan for urban development and underground water management, which are parts of the main causes of sinkholes. This study thus set out to analyze the risk factors of sinkholes in the subject area by using geospatial information deeply connected to sinkholes both directly and indirectly. The geospatial information used in analysis was obtained by examining the causes of sinkholes from a topographical perspective. Collected data were treated and analyzed with a range of spatial analysis tools based on GIS. The findings show that topographical factors had significant relations with sinkhole causes and raise a need to manage all kinds of pipe networks underground, the movement characteristics of underground water levels, and other topographical features. The findings may serve as data to support decision-making processes in the field of urban disaster prevention and call for extensive research to incorporate hydro-geomorphology and spatial modeling.

  • This paper deals with a possible contribution to international relations and affairs by the discipline of geography and raises the necessity of a new field in geography that would study relations between nations. The proposed change of the name 'East Sea' is used as a case study in promoting international standardization. Two major international organizations oversee the international standardization of geographical names. One is the UN Conferences of the Standardization of the Geographical Names which work in association with the UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names, and the other is the International Hydrographic Organization. These two organizations have in the past passed all the relevant resolutions pertaining to geographical names. From recent developments on the Korean Peninsula, however, it has become evident that international disputes on place names sometimes require a long process of consultation with the relevant parties. Efforts being made to restore the historically appropriate name of 'East Sea' as opposed to the 'Sea of Japan' have only now begun to diffuse in many areas. It would be appropriate if geographers could develop a new area of 'Geography of International Relations' that deals with WTO, oceans, environment and climatic issues, FAT, as well as territories and boundaries. Furthermore, it would improve the quality of discourse if geographers participated more in the decision-making processes in international affairs.

  • Recently, the importance of visual analytics has been recognized in the field of business intelligence. From the view of business intelligence, visual analytics aims for acquiring valuable insights for decision making by interactively visualizing a variety of business information. In this paper, we propose a treemap-based method for visualizing work-sharing relationships among business process performers. A work-sharing relationship is established between two performers who jointly participate in a specific activity of a business process and is an important factor for understanding organizational structures and behaviors in a process-centric organization. To this end, we design and implement a treemap-based visualization tool for representing work-sharing relationships as well as basic hierarchical information in business processes. Finally, we evaluate usefulness of the proposed visualization tool through an operational example using XPDL (XML Process Definition Language) process models.

  • Previous research on learning and memory has focused on how they are constructed through past experiences. Recent studies, however, have shed light on that such cognitive processes are in service of higher goals of maximizing future rewards. This review paper aims to introduce and discuss a related line of research. First, this paper introduces researches that show goal-directed model-based reinforcement learning, in which agents choose a behavior that does not necessarily bring immediate rewards but will allow future rewards, based on generalization and analogical extrapolation. It also reviews studies on neural substrates of goal-directed learning, and discusses that cognitive process implicated in striatal dopaminergic signals can also influence memory. Especially, memory is not a merely passive process of storing and retrieving past experiences homogeneously, but rather results of a decision-making process to serve higher goals. The body of research suggests that information on future rewards can have influence on current cognitive processing in a retrospective manner.

  • The present study developed a program which can assess the reliability of tunnel support systems based on a probability-based method. The developed program uses FLAC2D as a solver, and can automatically execute all the processes, associated with numerical and probabilistic analysis. Since a numerical analysis, which models the ground, requires a significant calculation time, it is actually impossible to apply simulation-based methods to probabilistic assessment on the reliability of tunnel support systems. Therefore, the present study used a point estimate method, which is efficient for probabilistic analysis since the method can significantly reduce the number of samples when compared with the simulation-based method. The developed program was applied to a tunnel project, and the results were compared with those through a deterministic approach. From the comparison, it was identified that a probabilistic approach can quantitatively assess the reliability of tunnel support systems based on probability of failure and can be used as a tool for decision making in tunnel support designs.
