Longitudinal recording has been the cornerstone of all two generations of magnetic recording systems, FDD and HDD. In recent, perpendicular recording has received much attention as promising technology for future high-density recording system Research into signal processing techniques is paramount for the issued storage system and is indispensable like longitudinal recording systems. This paper focuses on the performance evaluation of the various detectors under perpendicular recording system. Parameters for improving the their performance are examined for some detectors. Detectors considered in this work are the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML), noise-predictive maximum likelihood (NPML), fixed delay tree search with decision feedback (FDTS/DF), dual decision feedback equalizer (DDFE) and multilevel decision feedback equalizer (MDFE). Their performances are analyzed in terms of mean squared error (MSE) and noise power spectra, and similarity between recording channel and partial response (PR) channel.

In this paper, we present an equalization scheme for 8-VSB signals for the ATSC DTV system. We propose a complex feedback filter and complex feedback sample generator for DFE to equalize 8-VSB signals in order to efficiently remove multipath distortions causing leakages from the qudrature component. We show that the proposed structure outperforms the conventional DFE used for the digital VSB which uses a real-valued feedback filter with real-valued decisions.

In this paper, a quadratic sigmoid neural equalizer(QSNE) is proposed to improve the performance of conventional neural equalizer in terms of bit error probability by using a quadratic sigmoid function as the activation function of neural networks. Conventional neural equalizers which have been used to compensate for nonlinear distortions adopt the sigmoid function. In the case of sigmoid neural equalizer, each neuron has one linear decision boundary. So many neurons are required when the neural equalizer has to separate complicated structure. But in case of the proposed QSNF and quadratic sigmoid neural decision feedback equalizer(QSNDFE), each neuron separates decision region with two parallel lines. Therefore, QSNE and QSNDFE have better performance and simpler structure than the conventional neural equalizers in terms of bit error probability. When the proposed QSNDFE is applied to communication systems and digital magnetic recording systems, it is an improvement of approximately 1.5dB~8.3dB in signal to moise ratio(SNR) over the conventional decision feedback equalizer(DEF) and neural decision feedback equalizer(NDFE). As intersymbol interference(ISI) and nonlinear distortions become severer, QSNDFE shows astounding SNR shows astounding SNR performance gain over the conventional equalizers in the same bit error probability.
This paper describes an equalizer using the DFE (Decision Feedback Equalizer) structure, CMA. (Constant Modulus Algorithm) and LMS (Least Mean Square) algorithms. We employ high speed multipliers, square logics and many CSAs (Carry Save Adder) for high speed operations. We have developed floating-point models and fixed-point models using the COSSAP$\^$TM/ CAD tool and developed VHDL models. We have peformed logic synthesis using the SYNOPSYS$\^$TM/ CAD tool and the SAMSUNG 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ standard cell library (STD80). The total number of gates is about 130,000.

The constant modulus algorithm (CMA) widely used in blind equalization applications minimizes the averaged power of constant modulus error (CME) defined as the difference between an instant output power and a constant modulus. In this paper, a decision feedback version of the linear blind algorithm based on maximization of the zero-error probability for CME is proposed. The Gaussian kernel of the maximum zero-error criterion is analyzed to have the property to cut out excessive CMEs that may be induced from severely distorted channel characteristics. Decision feedback approach to the maximum zero-error criterion for CME is developed based on the characteristic that the Gaussian kernel suppresses the outliers and this prevents error propagation to some extent. Compared to the linear algorithm based on maximum zero-error probability for CME in the simulation of blind equalization environments, the proposed decision feedback version has superior performance enhancement particularly in cases of severe channel distortions.

In this paper, a structure for a nonlinear adaptive equalizer is discussed to reduce nonlinearity in digital high-density recording systems. We propose a nonlinear adaptive decision feedback equalizer which can reduce the nonlinear intersymbol interference increasing with high-density recording systems, and compare its performance with the RAM-DFE which is designed to remove nonlinear intersymbol interference existing in postcursor part. By observing the output SNR of each equalizer applied to recording channels with three different densities. we confirm that the nonlinear adaptive decision feedback equalizer performs the best in the general case where nonlinear intersymbol interference exists in both precursor and postcursor parts.

Underwater Acoustic Channels (UAC) have inherent sparse characteristics. The traditional adaptive equalization techniques do not utilize this feature to improve the performance. In this paper we consider the Variable Adaptive Subgradient Projection (V-ASPM) method to derive a new sparse equalization algorithm based on the Minimum Symbol Error Rate (MSER) criterion. Compared with the original MSER algorithm, our proposed scheme adds sparse matrix to the iterative formula, which can assign independent step-sizes to the equalizer taps. How to obtain such proper sparse matrix is also analyzed. On this basis, the selection scheme of the sparse matrix is obtained by combining the variable step-sizes and equalizer sparsity measure. We call the new algorithm Sparse-Control Proportional-MSER (SC-PMSER) equalizer. Finally, the proposed SC-PMSER equalizer is embedded into a turbo receiver, which perform turbo decoding, Digital Phase-Locked Loop (DPLL), time-reversal receiving and multi-reception diversity. Simulation and real-field experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in convergence speed and Bit Error Rate (BER).
We present a near-optimal blind decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for Advanced Television Systems Committee digital television (DTV) receivers. By adopting a modified trellis decoder (MTD) with trace back depth of 1 for the decision device In the DFE, we obtain a hardware-efficient near-optimal blind DFE approaching to the optimal DFE which has no error propagation. The MTD uses absolute distance instead of Euclidean distance for computation of a path metric, resulting. In reduced computational complexity. Comparing to the conventional slicer, the MTD shows outstanding performance improvement of decision error probability and is comparable to the original trellis decoder using Euclidean distance. Reducing error propagation in the DFE leads to the improvement of convergence performance in terms of convergence speed and residual error. Simulation results show that the proposed blind DFE performs much better than the blind DFE with the slicer.
In this paper, we propose a noise whitening decision feedback equalizer for single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) receivers. SC-FDMA has the same advantage as that of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in which the multipath effect can be removed easily, and also solves the problem of high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) which is the main drawback of OFDMA. Although SC-FDMA is a single carrier transmission scheme, a simple frequency domain linear equalizer (FD-LE) can be implemented as in OFDMA, which can dramatically reduce the equalizer complexity. Moreover, some residual intersymbol interference in the output of the FD-LE can be further removed by an additional nonlinear decision feedback equalizer (DFE) in time domain, because the time domain signal is a digitally modulated symbol. In the conventional DFE, however, the noise is not white at the input of the decision device and correspondingly the decision is not optimum. In this paper, we propose an improved DFE scheme for SC-FDMA systems where a linear noise whitening filter is inserted before the decision device of the conventional DFE scheme. Through computer simulations, we compare the bit error rate performance of the proposed DFE scheme with the conventional equalizers.

In this paper, a multiple transmission communication system employing ranging based transmission timing adjustment capability is proposed. In addition, a decision feedback equalizer with the use of combinations of soft decision and hard decision adequate to the proposed multiple transmission communication system is also proposed. The proposed ranging based transmission timing adjustment capability makes the received signals from the multiple transmission points centered on the different symbol timing boundaries. The decision making method for the inputs to the proposed decision feedback equalizer is adaptively selected between soft decision and hard decision as per channel conditions like SNR. The performance of the proposed method had been analyzed through the simulation under the fading channel environments and compared with the previous methods. The simulation results showed performance improvement of the proposed method over the existing ones without noticeable increments in complexities.
