Characteristics of Students' Problem Solving Using Additive Strategy in Ratio and Proportion Tasks (비와 비례 과제에서 가법적 전략을 사용하는 학생의 문제해결특징 : 중학생 2명의 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of students' mathematical representations using additive strategy in ratio and proportion tasks. The additive strategy is the erroneous one used most often among the strategies reported in solving ratio and proportion tasks. It is a problem solving strategy that preserves the difference from one ratio to another. Students' additive strategies were categorized into four parts: subtracting without considering units of quantities, comparing the numbers that represent the whole subtracted from the part and same part, adding the difference, and subtracting the difference. In order to change from additive strategy to multiplicative strategy, the researcher asked to find out the unit quantity and found the characteristics of students' mathematical notations in the following: Firstly, the students made the number which they wanted by multiplying and adding same numbers. Secondly, they represented the mid-points between natural numbers. Thirdly, they related $a{\div}b$ to decimal number, not $\frac{a}{b}$. Fourthly, they were inclined to divide the larger number with the smaller number without understanding the context of the problem. These results are interpreted as showing that lower level of performance in the dividing operation with the notations of fraction hinders the transformation from additive strategy to multiplicative strategy.

Identification, Characteristics, and Growth Inhibition of the Strain Isolated from Spoiled Wet Noodle

  • To determine the cause of wet noodle spoilage, microorganisms isolated from wet noodles were identified and characterized. In addition, the growth inhibitory effects of organic acid mixture (OA: lactic acid 27.8%, acetic acid 12.0%, succinic acid 1.0%) and sodium dehydroacetate (SD) on the isolated strain were estimated in nutrient broth medium. The isolated strain was Gram-positive, rod shaped, motile, and spore forming. Based on physiological characteristics and the API 50 CHB-kit test results for the assimilation of 49 carbohydrates, the isolated strain was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (92.6%), which is able to degrade starch. Decimal reduction times (D-values) at 100, 105, and $110^{\circ}C$ for spores of B. amyloliquefaciens were 8.5, 5.1, and 2.5 min, respectively, and the z-value was $12.8^{\circ}C$. We estimated that B. amylo-liquefaciens isolated from spoiled wet noodles was a thermophilic species having high heat-resistance. Viable cell numbers in wet noodles and broth medium inoculated with B. amyloliquefaciens were decreased by 2-4 log cycles by combined treatment with 0.03 or 0.05% OA and 0.3% SD. These results revealed that OA combined with SD could be used as a potential agent to inhibit B. amyloliquefaciens in wet noodles.

Comparative Study in Algebra Education with CAS: Korea and US cases (컴퓨터 대수체계(CAS) 대비 중등대수교육 기초 연구)

  • This study was designed to gain insight to adopt CAS into secondary level algebra education in Korea. Most inactive usage of calculators in math and most negative effects of calculators on their achievements of Korean students were shown in International studies such as TIMSS-R. A comparative study was carried out with consideration of mathematical backgrounds and technological environments. 8 Korean students and 26 US students in Grade 11 were participated in this study. Subjects' Problem solving process and their strategies of CAS usage in classical Box-problem with CAS were analyzed. CAS helped modeling by providing symbolic manipulation commands and graphs with students' mathematical knowledge. Results indicates that CAS requires shifts focus in algebraic contents: recognition of decimal & algebraic presentations of numbers; linking various presentations, etc. The extent of instrumentation effects on the selection of problem solving strategies among Korea and US students. Effect of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet on Inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes, Quality, and Genotoxicity of Cooked Egg White and Yolk

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of an atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) jet on L. monocytogenes inactivation, quality characteristics, and genotoxicological safety of cooked egg white and yolk. APP treatment using He gas resulted in a 5 decimal reduction in the number of L. monocytogenes in cooked egg white, whereas that using $He+O_2$, $N_2$, and $N_2+O_2$ decreased the number further, and to undetectable levels. All treatments of cooked egg yolk resulted in undetectable levels of inoculated L. monocytogenes. There were no viable cells of total aerobic bacteria after APP treatment on day 0 while the control showed approximately 3-4 Log CFU/g. On day 7, the numbers of total aerobic bacteria had increased by approximately 3 log cycles in cooked egg white, but there were no viable cells in cooked egg yolk after 2 min of APP jet. APP treatment decreased the $L^*$-values of cooked egg white and yolk significantly on day 0. No significant sensory differences were found among the cooked egg white samples, whereas significant reductions in flavor, taste, and overall acceptability were found in cooked egg yolks treated with APP jets. SOS chromotest did not reveal the presence of genotoxic products following APP treatments of cooked egg white and yolk. Therefore, it can be concluded that APP jets can be used as a non-thermal means to enhance the safety and extend the shelf-life of cooked egg white and yolk.

A Design and Performance Evaluation of Path Search by Simplification of Estimated Values based on Variable Heuristic (가변 휴리스틱 기반 추정치 간소화를 통한 경로탐색 기법의 설계 및 성능 평가)

  • The path search method in the telematics system should consider traffic flow of the roads as well as the shortest time because the optimal path with minimized travel time could be continuously changed by the traffic flow. The existing path search methods are not able to cope efficiently with the change of the traffic flow. The search method to use traffic information also needs more computation time than the existing shortest path search. In this paper, a method for efficiency improvement of path search is implemented and its performance is evaluated. The method employs the fixed grid for adjustable heuristic to traffic flow. Moreover, in order to simplify the computation of estimation values, it only adds graded decimal values instead of multiplication operation of floating point numbers with due regard to the gradient between a departure and a destination. The results obtained from the experiments show that it achieves the high accuracy and short execution time as well.

Discussion on Calculating the Required Shelves for Arranging the School Library Collection (학교도서관 장서 배가를 위한 소요 서가 산출에 대한 논의)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a method of calculating the shelves required for the placement of bookshelves in the school library. The study was conducted by visiting 11 school libraries, and current library status was identified according to school levels and major subjects of the Korean Decimal Classification. According to the results of the survey, ideal numbers of arranged volumes are 46.9, 32.3, and 28.4 volumes of books, for elementary, middle, and, high school respectively, which takes up 67 percent of a 90-centimeter-unit bookshelf. However, the more realistic number turned out to be 75%, with 52.8, 36.4, and 32.0 volumes of books for elementary, middle, and high schools, respectively. Based on the results of the survey, a tool was presented to calculate required bookshelves in school libraries. This study is expected to have a positive impact on library operation by making it easier to calculate the bookshelves required for actual placement.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the various processes and patterns to build or synthesize class numbers in the 800 class of the Dewey Decimal Classification, Edition 20(1989). The results of the analysis are as follows: 1. The 800(Literature and rhetoric) class in the DDC system is the main class added analytico-synthetic principle positively to an enumerative scheme. 2. The facets to be a n.0, pplied in literature are language literary form literary period ; kind, scope, or medium ; notation 08(collection) or 09(criticism) literary feature, subject, author, etc. 3. In the 800 class, there are the five tables of precedence for literary forms aspects ; specific kinds of persons ; literary, period in relation to the aspects for works treating more than one literary form subforms, aspects and literary periods in the works treating a specific literary form. 4. The basic number synthesis of literary works proceeds through the various facets in the following sequence, as far as necessary for the item : base no. + literary form + literary time or period + kind, scope, or medium + notation 08 or 09 + subform + additional notation from T3C and other tables. 5. In view of the multiplicity of facets, their synthesis formulas take the following order : (1) Works about the literature : base no.(schedule) + language(T6) or form(T3B) (2) Works by or about individual author : base no.(schedule) + form (T3A) + period(schedule) + subform(T3A) (3) Works by or about more than one author, not restricted by language facet : base no.(schedule) + period(T1) ; base no.(schedule) + kind, scope, medium(T3B), or feature(T3C), or person(T5). (4) Works by or about more than one author, restricted by language facet : base no.(schedule) + form (T3B) + period(schedule) + subform(T3B) + notation 08 or 09(T3B) ; base no.(schedule) + notation 08 or 09(T3B) + 9(T3C) + area notation(T2) : base no.(schedule) + form (T3B) + notation 008 or 009(T3B) : base no.(schedule) + form (T3B) + kind, scope, medium(T3B) + notation 08 or 09(T3B) + period(schedule). (5) Affiliated literatures for which period numbers are not us base no.(schedule) + form (T3A or T3B), or notation 08 or 09(T3B) : base no.(schedule) + kind, scope, medium(T3B), feature(T3C), or person(T5) 6. The problems in the number building of the 800 class are the complexity and difficulty of number synthesis, the intrinsic weakness of from distinction and the inconvenience of retrieval inherent in the form class. In order to solve these problems, therefore, the citation orders and methods of DDC should be improved and synthesis patterns simplified from the point of view of its applicability and its usefulness in the "literature class".

Analysis on Connection of Curriculum and Textbooks in Elementary School Mathematics : Focused on 3~4 Grades (초등학교 수학과 교육과정과 교과서의 연계 분석 - 2009 개정 교육과정 초등학교 3~4학년군을 중심으로)

  • This research aims to have some implications for revision of curriculum and textbooks by analysing connections between the 2009 revised national curriculum and its textbooks in elementary school mathematics. The results of analyses for 3~4 grades can be summarized in four aspects: Firstly, we noticed that the reconstructed achievement criteria were reflected properly in the textbooks except for use of calculators in 'Numbers and Operations'. Secondly, the analysis of connections between unit objectives of textbooks and the reconstructed achievement criteria suggests that 10 units must receive attention. Especially, the range of decimal numbers for adding and subtracting needs to be corrected. Thirdly, mathematical terms and symbols excluding 'unit fraction' were found in the textbooks. Finally, mathematical processes were also fully reflected in the textbooks. However 'simplifying' as a strategy for problem solving was only missing. This result shows good or poor connections between the curriculum and its textbooks, therefore it is expected to be used effectively to revise the national curriculum for mathematics and its textbooks.

Algorithm for Addition Minimization Shift-and-Add of Binary Multiplication Problem (이진수 곱셈 문제의 덧셈 최소화 자리이동-덧셈 알고리즘)

  • When performing the multiplication m×r=p of two binary numbers m and r on a computer, there is a shift-and-add(SA) method in which no time-consuming multiplication is performed, but only addition and shift-right(SR). SA is a very simple method in which when the value of the multiplier ri is 0, the result p is only SR with m×0=0, and when ri is 1, the result p=p+m is performed with m×1=m, and p is SR. In SA, the number of SRs can no longer be shortened, and the improvement part is whether the number of additions is shortened. This paper proposes an SA method to minimize addition based on the fact that setting a smaller number to r when converted to a binary number to be processed by a computer can significantly reduce the number of additions compared to the case of setting a smaller number to r based on the decimals that humans perform. The number of additions to the proposed algorithm was compared for four cases with signs (-,-), (-,+), (+,-), and (+,+) for some numbers in the range [-127,128]. The conclusion obtained from the experiment showed that when determining m and r, it should be determined as a binary number rather than a decimal number.

Effect of Ozone Treatment for Sanitation of Egg (계란의 위생화를 위한 오존살균기술의 이용)

  • To improve hygienic quality of egg, the ozone treatment was applied. Eggs were inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium, and the inoculated eggs were treated by ozone (38.8 ppm) for 10-30 min. Furthermore, microbiological and chemical quality changes of eggs were investigated during storage. Initial number of S. Typhimurium of egg shell was 6.18 log CFU/g and the number was increased during storage (p<0.05). However, those of ozonated samples for 10-30 min were 4.22-5.25 log CFU/g, which was lower than that of the control. Especially, ozone treatment for 30 min achieved about 2 decimal reductions and the numbers were maintained during storage. Other physical and chemical characteristics of eggs by ozone treatment, including Haugh unit, yolk color, pHs of egg white and yolk, foaming ability, foam stability and lipid oxidation development were not different when compared with that of the control. Therefore, ozone treatment is one of the available methods to improve hygienic quality of eggs.
