New Record of Two Xanthid Crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Xanthidae) from Korea

  • Xanthid crabs, decapod crustacean, with the black coloured fingers, are easily found under rocks or stones in the intertidal or subtidal zones. Two xanthids, Etisus laevimanus Randall, 1840 and Paraxanthias elegans (Stimpson, 1858), were newly reported in Korean waters as part of continuous taxonomic studies on crabs. The genus Paraxanthias Odhner, 1925 was also reported for the first time in Korea. Of these, the examined specimen of P. elegans showed eight feathery hairs on the subdistal tip of the first gonopod, which differs from the description of Dai and Yang at 1991. Here, the descriptions and illustrations of these species are provided. Korean Xanthoidea currently consists of 30 species belonging to 25 genera.

  • Two spiny lobsters of the genus Panulirus, P. stimpsoni Holthuis, 1963 from Jeju Island and P. versicolor (Latreille, 1804) from Busan, are briefly described with colorations. These lobsters are new members of the Korean decapod crustacean fauna. Morphological and distributional accounts of these species are discussed.

  • Two new species of Clausidiidae, each belonging to the genera Clausidium Kossmann, 1875 and Hippomolgus G. O. Sars, 1917, are described from Korea. Clausidium maximus n. sp. is an associate of a burrowing decapod of the genus Callianassa living on the Korean coast of the Yellow Sea and has, as diagnostic characters, two inner setae on the second endopodal segment of legs 2-4, nine elements on the third exopodal segment of leg 4, an inner seta on the second exopodal segment of male leg 1, and a relatively large body size, exceeding 2.0 mm in the female. Hippomolgus limiticus n. sp. was found in the bottom sediments in the East China Sea. It is similar to H. furcifer G. O. Sars, but distinghuishable from the latter species by having shorter caudal rami, 4-segmented female maxilliped, and inner coxal spine (instead of seta) on legs 2 and 3. This is the first record on the genera Clausidium and Hippomolgus in the West Pacific.

  • an analysis of stomach contents of skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis and plankton samples collected during troll fishing operations showed that the abundance of some dominant organisms in tuna stomachs was related to their abundance in the plankton. Fish larvae mainly pilchards, Nyctiphanes australis, brachyuran and other decapod larvae and calanoid copepods are important food item for skipjack. The copepods Undinula vulgaris and Nannocalanus minor occurred consistently throughout the survey period in both stomach contents and plankton samples. U. vulgaris appeared to be a preferred food considering its high percentage composition in tuna stomachs compared with its low percentage composition in the plankton. Temora turbinata and N. minor may also serve as important food items for skipjack. The largest catches of the fish were made in January and February when plankton organisms were composed dominantly of N. australis, copepods and brachyuran larvae. The main stomach contents during this period were N. australis and brachyuran larvae.

Feeding Habits of Paralichthys olivaceus in the Uljin Marine Ranching Area (동해 울진바다목장에 서식하는 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of Paralichthys olivaceus in the Uljin marine ranching area, located on the mid-eastern coast of Korea, were studied from January to November 2009. In total, 381 specimens were collected; fish ranged in size from 15.4 to 59.0 cm in total length. P. olivaceus is a carnivore, mainly consuming other fishes and crustaceans. The prey items of P. olivaceus changed ontogenetically. Small individuals fed on decapod crustaceans while large ones fed heavily on other fishes. The diet of P. olivaceus varied seasonally. Fish comprised the main prey items throughout the year. The stomach contents index (SCI) of each size class increased and the dietary breadth index (DBI) of each size class decreased as individuals grew.

Nucleotide Analysis of 185 rRNA and Molecular Phylogeny of the Korean Decapods (하국산 십각류의 18S 리보솜 RNA의 염기분석과 분자계통에 관한 연구)

  • The nucleotide sequences of 185 rRNAs of the five Korean decapods were partially determined by the direct sequencing method using the reverse transcriptase. ne average GC content of five species was 51.1% which is higher than that of yeast(45.0%) and lower than those of frog (53.0%) and rat (55.6%). This result follows the general patterns of the GC content in the nucleotides of the nucleic acid shown among the various phylogenetic groups. The average ratio of transrional/transversional nucleotide substitution of pairwise comparison among six species (including Anemia salina) was 1.200 $\pm$ 0.310 when whole region alas examined. However, the ratio showed some differences when the conservative regions and variable regions frere separatelv examined. The molecular phylogenies of the five species were constructed by using two different tree making methods. In general the results support the previously reported molecular phylogeny of the decapod crustaceans. However, our results indicate thats in the analysis of the sequence dat3, the UPGMA clustering method of the distance matrix method should be carefully employed after considering the rate of nucneotide substitution in the different regions of the molecule.

  • Bopyrid isopods collected from 35 localities in Korea were examined. Twelve species in 12 genera were identified and classified onto 7 subfamilies, of which following 8 species are new to Korea : Metaboyrus ovalis Shiino, Bopyrissa pyriforma (shiino), Ione cornuta Spence Bate, Parapenaeonella distincta Shiino, Bopyriodes Hippolytes (Kroyer), Pseudostegias dulicilacuum Markham, Athelges takanoshimensis Ishii and Eophrixus shojii Shiino. Athelges japonicus Shiino is found out to be a junior synonym of a.takanoshimensis Ishii. Eight unrecorded scpecies in Korea are descried with figures. Other two species , Apocepon pulcher Nierstrasz et Brender Brandis and Argeia pugettensis Dana. Are provided with figures.

Detection of infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus and white spot syndrome virus in whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) imported from Vietnam to South Korea

  • In this study, whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) imported from Vietnam were collected from South Korean markets, and examined for 2 viruses: infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV, recently classified as decapod penstyldensovirus-1), and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Among 58 samples, we detected IHHNV in 23 samples and WSSV in 2 samples, using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing analyses. This is the first report of IHHNV and WSSV detection in imported shrimp, suggesting that greater awareness and stricter quarantine policies regarding viruses infecting shrimp imported to South Korea are required.

Distribution of Zooplankton Communities in the Coastal Area of Wando in Summer (하계 완도 연안역의 동물플랑크톤 군집분포)

  • Distribution of zooplankton communities was sampled vertically with a NORPAC net investigated in costal area of Wando from 30, August at 7 stations. A total of 37 taxa were sampled with a total abundance of zooplankton ranged from $147{\sim}1,696indiv.\;m^{-3}$. Evadne tergestina, Acartia pacifica, Paracalanus parvus s. 1, Decapod larvae, Sagitta crassa were dominant species in coastal area of Wando and they contributed 90% of mean abundance of total zooplankton. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences in community structure among the three regions: the site 1 (A), the middle part of the sampling area (B) and other sites (C). The number and abundance of zooplankton varied significantly among the three regions (p < 0.05). Of these, the distribution of zooplankton communities in the coastal area of Wando was controlled by Tsushima Warn Current and bottom cold water of Yellow Sea.

Structural Similarity and Expression Differences of Two Pj-Vg Genes from the Pandalus Shrimp Pandalopsis japonica

  • Vitellogenin (Vg) is the precursor of vitellin (Vn), which is the major yolk protein in nearly all oviparous species, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, and most invertebrates. It is one of the most important factors during reproduction, and numerous studies have shown that Vg genes are markers of the reproductive cycle and effecter genes induced by endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Previously, we isolated two distinct cDNAs encoding vitellogenin homologs Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 from Pandalus shrimp Pandalopsis japonica. In this study, full-length genomic sequences of Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 were determined using a PCR-based genome walking strategy. Isolated Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 genes were 11,910 and 11,850 bp long, respectively. Both Pj-Vg genes had 15 exons and 14 introns, and the splicing sites were also the same, suggesting that they arose via gene duplication. The similar structural characteristics of decapod Vg genes suggest that they are all orthologs that evolved from the same ancestral gene. Analysis of Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 expression revealed that the relative copy numbers of Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 were similar in the hepatopancreas, whereas Pj-Vg2 transcripts were also detected in the ovary. Expression of both Pj-Vg genes was induced in hepatopancreas of mature individuals, whereas only Pj-Vg2 transcripts were upregulated in the ovaries from mature animals, suggesting that both Pj-Vgs are important for oocyte development. A strong positive correlation was found between Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2 transcripts in the same individual, indicating they are under the same control mechanisms. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between ovarian and hepatopancreatic Pj-Vg2 transcripts, suggesting that its dual expression is regulated by similar physiological conditions. Knowledge of the similarities and differences between the two vitellogenin-like genes, Pj-Vg1 and Pj-Vg2, would help us to understand their roles in reproduction and other physiological effects.
