  • Kiho Academic in the late Joseon Korea, the negative effect of the Horak debate is amplified and the division within the academic is accelerated. However, the scholars of the Kiho Academic field put forth efforts to unify the academics with the same sense of responsibility to end the schism. Nevertheless, the scholars of the Kiho Academic have shown various differences in the process of accepting Neo-Confucianism, which creates new schools. Therefore, Kiho Academic in the late Joseon Korea coexisted with various schools with different academy positions. Some of the representative groups are Hwaseo, Nosa, Ganjae, Yeonjae, and Uuidang Schools. In addition, through the scholarly differentiation and the school division of the Kiho Academic, the debate on the mind that characterizes Neo-Confucianism of the late Joseon Korea has developed. However, there was a common value that everyone pursued in the middle of the debate: the construction of a moral ideal society, the ultimate goal of Neo-Confucianism. In conclusion, though the purpose they pursued was not fulfilled, it can be seen from the debate on the mind that they fiercely demanded that these requests were urgent in the late Joseon Korea This paper, therefore, the situation of the Kiho academic in the late of Joseon Korea, the problem consciousness of the scholars of the Kiho academic, and the issue and development of debate on the mind.

  • In late Chosen(朝鮮), the concept of illustrious virtue(明德) became an important issue of debate. However, previous studies did not focus on how the concept emerged as an issue. This paper aimed to explore the problem, and for this purpose, paid attention to Horak(湖洛) debate. Oiam(巍巖) Yi Gan(李柬), in the course of discussion with Namdang(南塘), finally argued that mind(心) clearly distinguishes from temperament(氣質). The goals of the claim were to clearly divide mind and temperament, and to emphasize mind's control of temperament. Through this, he wanted to reject the possibility of being affected by temperament in aroused state(未發). And he presented the concept of illustrious virtue as a critical evidence supporting his argument. He argued that because mind is same with illustrious virtue, it has a special status that essentially distinguished from the temperament, even if both mind and temperament are all material force(氣). This argument led to new discussion trend in the debate. it was to form a definition of the mind, based on defining the relationship between spiritual perception(虛靈知覺), temperament and illustrious virtue. The trend was reflected in the debate on 'Whether illustrious virtue is the same for everyone or varies from person to person(明德分殊)'. Through the process of analysis in this paper, we could detect a tendency that definition of mind has become an independent subject.

  • This paper deals with mind and human nature dispute between Si-Ma guang and Han-Yu in the Northern Sung Dynasty, focused upon the "zhong-hua". The letter exchange between Si-Ma guang and Han-yu, which were the mind and human nature debate between a representative intellectually of the Confucianism and a scholar who absorbed in the Buddhism, can provide the discussion on various ideological origins that affected the development of the mind and human nature theory. Moreover, the contents of a letter from both of them can be used as an important cue to observe the discussion under what ideological foundations the mind and human nature theory could be embodied in the future and what advance it has made and what is its philosophical meaning.

  • This thesis is a paper comparing Adolf Loos and Antoni Gaudí's 'theory of ornament', based on their text. Adolf Loos and Antoni Gaudí are architects who had worked from late 19c, just before advent of Modernism architecture, to early 20c. When 'ornament' had started to be excluded from architecture according to development of industrialization and capitalism, Loos and Gaudí have both written about 'ornament.' Generally, Loos is known to have possessed rational mind and designed modern building with no ornament, and Gaudí is known to have possessed romantic mind and used splendid ornaments. For those reasons, it was assumed that two architects would have contrast opinions regarding ornaments. However, analysis of two architects' major text reveals that their theories of ornament are fundamentally analogous. Loos and Gaudí both argue dissolution of past normative 'ornament' and claims that rational 'ornament' that fits modern time is possible. Interestingly, intentionally adopted ornaments exist considerably in architecture of Loos. On the other hand, in Gaudí's architecture, there are many points where Gaudí had restrained ornaments. This thesis organizes similarity and differences of two architects' 'theory of ornament' through their texts and works. Moreover, this thesis suggests that then today's architecture aims to restart a debate on 'ornament', it is worth reviewing texts of Loos and Gaudí.

  • After Four-Seven debate in late 16C, Korean Neo-Confucian scholars had developed their theories on human nature and morality such as Insimdosimsoel (theories on the moral emotion and desire), Inmulsoengron(theories on human nature and animal nature), Mibalsimcheron(theories on the calm mind as the embodiment of morality). Confucian scholars had been active member of society since acceptance of Neo-Confucianism. They had the plans of social reforms on the basis of moral self cultivation from the elite Confucians to commoners. So the Confucian scholar took part in the foundation of new Confucian kingdom, the Joseon Dynasty(1392). Kwon gun(1352~1409), the famous Neo-Confucian scholar wrote Iphakdosoel(pictogram for beginer of Neo-Confucianism) which emphasized the importance of moral self cultivation and that the mandate of heaven in human nature is identical with Li, the moral principle which the origin of the human intrinsic moral ability as the basis of unity with man and heaven. He thought that ethical life is identical with mandate of heaven, so he insisted all the member of society should follow Li, the moral principle which the origin of human morality and social goodness. Also he emphasized the morality was the intrinsic and most important value of human being. Therefore ethical life became essential part of self cultivation. Joeng Ji-un(1509~1561) wrote the Chunmyongdosoel (pictogram of mandate of Heaven), the start point of Four-Seven debate in mid 16C. Joeng followed Kwon's theoretical line. He emphasized the importance of moral self cultivation and the human intrinsic moral ability. He wrote that the Four moral emotions arise from Li, the moral principle of mind, while Seven emotions arise from Ki, vital force of body. He insisted that human being should control Ki, the vital force to follow the Li, the moral principle of mind. This Korean Confucian scholars developed theories of morality and self cultivation. This theories not only show the philosophical speculation of Korean Confucian scholars but also show the social idealism and moral utopianism which grounded on the human morality. So they had trust in human morality which can guide human being into the right track to the good and peaceful society. These tendencies are main characteristics of Korean Neo-Confucianism which has seen from the begining of acceptance of Neo-Confucianism. Some modern philosophical criticism which insist the Korean Neo-Confucian theories such as Four-Senven theories was indulged in academic discussion are not only neglect the historical realty but also ignore the potential of Korean Neo-Confucian heritage.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is the Basic research for mind and body cure protocol construction through the Sim(心) study at Buddhism Medicine, Constitutional Medicine, and Oriental Medicine. Methods : 1. The Sim(心) in Buddhism is a target of spiritual culture and subjective awareness of An ascetic person in interior psychology. In this research, the Sim(心) has been modified within a concept of Early Buddhism and You-sic in order to have medical logicality. 2. Since the study deep into Sim(心) within Confucianism has various aspects, each Confucian's theory argument or era. We limited the significance of the Sim(心) to be associated with the category of the Sim(心) in Sasang Constitutional Medicine which is a product of practical Confucianism. 3. The criteria of debate for the Sim(心) is based on the "Hwang-je-nae-gyoung", because "Hwang-je-nae-gyoung" is founded to definite the term regarding spirit or mind in Oriental medicine Results : 1. "Hwang-je-nae-gyoung" which came from thought of You-Sic, thought of Taoism, and Early Buddhism becomes the theoretical basis for the Sim(心) in Buddhism Medicine, Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and Oriental Medicine. 2. The Sim(心) in the mind psychology of Buddhism Medicine, Sasang Constitutional Medicine, and Oriental Medicine has active aspects. but the visual thing // There are visual aspects being contrasted with 'Sim(心)' of mind psychology and aspects of activity in Buddhism medicine, Sasang constitutional Medicine and Oriental Medicine; which are 'Hrd', 'Hrdaya', 'four-large' 'five base', 'chin, chest, navel and abdomen', 'head, shoulder, waist and buttocks' consisting 'the body', and the heart and 'four interorgans' from the study of symbolical interorgans). In Buddhism Medicine, Sim(心)'s Epistemology is the most extensively understood fact about 'Sim(心)', and for Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Oriental Medicine. 'Sim(心)' is limited as an 'Element' that comprises the body. 3. The Functional area of the Sim(心) in the Buddhism Medicine, Sasang Constitutional Medicine, Oriental Medicine is composed with 'consciousness(意識)' 'manas-vij_na(末那識)', '_aya-vij_na(阿賴耶識)', 'mind greed(心欲)', 'Li(理)' and 'Sin(神)', about the interpretive area of 'Sim(心)', 'Sin(神)' of Oriental medicine is the most comprehensive concept, and on the side of the depth of 'thinking' and 'consciousness', '_aya-vij_na(阿賴耶識)' from Buddhism Medicine in the key point. 4. The Sim(心) in the Buddhism Medicine, Sasang Constitutional Medicine, has the positive and negative aspects, such as the 'Dukkha(煩惱)' and A merciful heart or Human Sim(心) and Taoism Sim(心).

  • Constructionists believe that mathematical knowledge is obtained by a series of purely mental constructions, with all mathematical objects existing only in the mind of the mathematician. But constructivism runs the risk of rejecting the classical laws of logic, especially the principle of bivalence and L. E. M.(Law of the Excluded Middle). This philosophy of mathematics also does not take into account the external world, and when it is taken to extremes it can mean that there is no possibility of communication from one mind to another. Two constructionists, Brouwer and Dummett, are common in rejecting the L. E. M. as a basic law of logic. As indicated by Dummett, those who first realized that rejecting realism entailed rejecting classical logic were the intuitionists of the school of Brouwer. However for Dummett, the debate between realists and antirealists is in fact a debate about semantics - about how language gets its meaning. This difference of initial viewpoints between the two constructionists makes Brouwer the intuitionist and Dummettthe the semantic anti-realist. This paper is confined to show that Dummett's proposal in favor of intuitionism differs from that of Brouwer. Brouwer's intuitionism maintained that the meaning of a mathematical sentence is essentially private and incommunicable. In contrast, Dummett's semantic anti-realism argument stresses the public and communicable character of the meaning of mathematical sentences.

  • A great amount of research and reform has teen done in education, but not much about education has been improved. Much of the research and debate has stemmed from the attempt at making education a science. But, in most of this research, a very important factor has been left out - the individual, Techniques and procedures that are used by scientists on animals in controlled situations in laboratory setting can not be used effectively on humans. Therefore, we must team from our past, decide what we want from education - from the student and the teacher, match our methods with our goals, and look towards the future, while always keeping in mind-the human factor.

  • The Chinese classic 'The Great Learning' presents a guideline in which direction we should go for the character education and the realization of a just society. It conveys the message, 'Everyone must remain at the level of goodness for our community based on training our own mind and body.' Goodness is a generic concept that means universal truth in the right direction. This study aims to present the direction of communication education for how everyone should stay in goodness. Communication education about goodness could be conducted as follows. Based on the theory of interpersonal communication and persuasive communication, first the abstract concept of goodness is understood, brainstorming and schema activity for the good are performed for true communication, and then the teaching and learning method combining debate, flipped learning, and writing could be utilized. It is difficult to provide communication education with the message of goodness with students who have grown up on the basis of comparatively cramming education. However, through communication using discussion, a paradigm shift in education will take place, and it will not only help form human relationships, but also recognize the importance of the meaning of the community in the society in which we live, and ultimately it will help foster character.

  • Last review papers on Korean geomorphology and physical geography had been published in 1997 and 2000 respectively. A proposal to publish a book on Korean geomorphologists' achievement resulted in series of review papers in Journal of the Korean Geomorphological Association. This article aims to summarize these papers and introduce their findings to foreign scholars. On remarkable achievement is a fierce debate on the effectiveness of traditional mountain concept to explain the shape of Korean peninsula, which made the public's understanding of geomorphology widen to the general public. Reflecting public demands, concerns for the effects of coastal facilities on coastal erosion and conservation mind and scientific researches for the coastal sand dunes have increased so much. Geomorphological hazards such as debris flow attracted many concerned scientists, and geotourism-related papers in scientific journals increased thanks to the designation of first geopark in Korea. Research papers submitted to the famous foreign academic journals are increasing in numbers these days.
