Purpose: CKD-602, a newly developed water-soluble campthotecin analogue, is a anticancer agent which act as a DNA topoisomerase I inhibitor. CKD-602 is known as more potent and tolerable agent. The main purposes of this study were to measure the cytotoxic effect of CKD-602 on the oral cancer cell lines and to evaluate the apoptotic aspect of dead cells. Materials and Methods: To determine the cytotoxic effect of CKD-602 on the oral cancer cell lines in comparison with various cell lines, such as lung cancer and colon cancer cell lines, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay was performed. And apoptosis was analyzed using fluorescence-activated cell sorting(FACS) system. Results: CKD-602 decreased the viability of malignant cells in a dose dependent manner and in a time dependent manner. CKD-602 showed excellent cytotoxicity to the oral cancer cell lines. Also, apoptotic portion was increased in a dose dependent manner. Conclusion: These findings indicated that CKD-602 induced apoptotic cell death in the various cell lines including oral cancer cell lines. From the results, it was suggested that CKD-602 would be a potential therapeutic agent for the oral cancer. More successive researches on the anticancer effect of CKD-602 should be performed.
This study was conducted to investigate for its effects on reproductive and developmental toxicity of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) in Sprague-Dawley rats. Male rats were administered rhEGF at doses of 1, 10, 100, and 1000$\mu$g/kg/day, respective1y, by subcutaneous injection from 63 days before and throughout to mating period until the day before sacrifice. Female rats were administered rhEGF at the same doses from 14 days before mating to day 20 of gestation or to day 21 of lactation. We examined the male and female fertility indices and maternal toxicity of F0 parental animals. Also, we examined the external, visceral, or skeletal malformation of fetuses, growth and development, behavior, and/or reproductive performance of F1 animals. At the highest dose (1,000 $\mu$g/kg), the mean body weights of F0 animals were significantly increased in males and females at 3 or 2 weeks after treatment, respective1y. No clinical signs and food intakes were observed at any time during the experimental period by rhEGF treatment. In autopsy examination, the relative and absolute liver weights significantly increased in both sexes of 1,000 $\mu$g/kg. At the highest dose (1,000 $\mu$g/kg), there was a statistically significant increase of pregnancy period and the number of dead fetuses. Moreover, significant increase of mean fetal body weight and decrease of number of live fetuses, which related to the difficult dilivery were observed in highest dose group. In Fl examination, no adverse effects on external, visceral, and skeletal malformation, physical and functional development, behavior or reproductive ability of Fl animals were observed in any group. Also, there was no significant difference between control and treated groups in copulation or fertility indices of Fl animals. These results indicate that rhEGF had no adverse effect on fertility and reproductive ability of Sprague-Dawley rats.

To investigate the effects of safflower seed supplementation diet on the hepatic injury of rats administered with carbon tetrachloride (CCI$_4$), histopathological changes were assessed following acute and chronic administration in rats. In acute cases, all rats in group fed with 10% safflower seed supplementation diet survived despite the administration of lethal doses of $CCl_4$. However, most rats in group fed with control diet died. The hepatic injuries of survived rats, in the histopathological findings, were mild compared to those of dead rats. In the chronic cases, livers of group 2 fed with control diet were more progressive in fatty changes and centrilobular necrosis than those of group 3 fed with 20%safflower seed diet. However, after six weeks, livers of group 2 and 3 showed severe necrosis and mild fibrosis at the same time. Group 5 fed with 10% safflower seed supplementation diet and water containing 0.05% phenobarbital sodium showed mild fatty changes and necrosis compared with group 4 fed with control diet and water containing 0.05% phenobarbital sodium at sixth week. At 8 to 10 wee71s after the administration of $CCl_4$, severe fibrosis. fatty changes and marked necrosis were observed in group 4, but hepatic injuries were less severe in group 5. The present results suggested that safflower seed has some protective effect in hepatic lesions and consequently delay the progression of hepatic fibrosis.

Objectives : In the present study, we investigated whether or not an herb mixture including Lycii fructus(HML) has attenuation effects on light stress in rats. Methods : Light stress was induced by exposure to 300 lx of constant lifht for 24 h and 1mg/kg of caffeine was injected into the rat. Rats were orally treated with distilled water of HML for 21 days at 100mg/kg/d. The changes of mortality rate, clinical signs, body, blood chemistry, melatonin and IL-2 expression were analyzed after experiment. Results : Normal weight changes were observed in all treatment groups. In addition, no changes were observed in dead animals and general symptoms. At the time of autopsy, the appearance of all groups and gross examination of major organs were observed, and no gross findings were observed. Blood biochemical tests showed that total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels were statistically significantly decreased in the group treated with HML compared to the stress-induced group. Melatonin was measured in the blood, but there was no significant difference in the group treated with HML compared to the group with stress-induced group, but it tended to increase. IL-2 was measured in the blood, no significant change was observed in the group treated with HML compared to the stress-induced group. Conclusions : According to the above results, HML maybe help with hematological changes expressed by caffeine and light-induced stress.

In order to match the voltages between high voltage battery stacks and low voltage super-capacitors with a high conversion efficiency in hybrid energy sources electric vehicles (HESEVs), a high ratio bidirectional DC-DC converter with a synchronous rectification H-Bridge is proposed in this paper. The principles of high ratio step-down and step-up operations are analyzed. In terms of the bidirectional characteristic of the H-Bridge, the bidirectional synchronous rectification (SR) operation is presented without any extra hardware. Then the SR power switches can achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on and turn-off during dead time, and the power conversion efficiency is improved compared to that of the diode rectification (DR) operation, as well as the utilization of power switches. Experimental results show that the proposed converter can operate bidirectionally in the wide ratio range of 3~10, when the low voltage continuously varies between 15V and 50V. The maximum efficiencies are 94.1% in the Buck mode, and 93.6% in the Boost mode. In addition, the corresponding largest efficiency variations between SR and DR operations are 4.8% and 3.4%. This converter is suitable for use as a power interface between the battery stacks and super-capacitors in HESEVs.
This study was designed to prepare an animal model for partial thickness bum wound which can be employed for testing topical therapy. We first evaluated whether rabbit ear and mouse back skin wound model could differentiate the wound healing process in terms of degree of re epithelialization, required days for complete wound closure, presence of scarring. $2^{nd}$ degree wet bum were prepared on mouse back skin and rabbit ear by applying 5 mL hot water($85{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$) for 7 see followed by 5 mL ice-cold 0.5% acrynol solution for cooling and disinfecting the inflicted area. After removing the dead epidermis layer at 24 hr, tested dressings were applied for specified time and wound progression was investigated. In mouse model, wound contraction was the primary wound closing mechanism, which is quite different from human wound healing process. In rabbit ear model, epidermal regeneration was the major wound healing process rather than wound contraction and the difference in wound healing property among tested dressings could be clearly demonstrated. A rabbit ear model could differentiate the wound progression among open, occluded and epidermal growth factor(EGF) treated wound. Four sites of circular wound(diameter: 1 cm) on the anterior part of rabbit ear could be employed for the comparative wound healing study. For obtaining reproducible bum wound, degree of bum depth and bum sites should be carefully controlled in addition, employing rabbits of same strain and weight. The result suggests that rabbit ear could be employed as a reliable and human-resembled wound model.

Because of the difference between the actual and computed eccentricity of buildings, symmetrical buildings will be affected by torsion. In provisions, accidental eccentricity is intended to cover the effect of several factors, such as unfavorable distributions of dead- and live-load masses and the rotational component of ground motion about a vertical axis. The torsional amplification factor is introduced to reduce the vulnerability of torsionally imbalanced buildings. The effect of the torsional amplification factor is observed for a symmetric rectangular building with various aspect ratios, where the seismic-force-resisting elements are positioned at a variable distance from the geometrical center in each direction. For verifying the torsional amplification factor in provisions, nonlinear reinforced concrete models with various eccentricities and aspect ratios are used in rock. The difference between the maximum displacements of the flexible edge obtained between using nonlinear static and time-history analysis is very small but the difference between the maximum torsional angles is large.

To improve the current waveform of diode rectifiers, we propose a new operating principle for the voltage-doubler diode rectifiers. In the conventional voltage-doubler rectifier circuit, relatively large capacitors are used to boost the output voltage, while the proposed circuit uses smaller ones and a small reactor not to boost the output voltage but improve the input current waveform. A circuit design method is shown by experimentation and confirmed simulation. The experimental results of the proposed diode rectifier satisfies the harmonic guide lines. A high input power factor of 97(%) and an efficiency of 98[%] are also obtained. The new rectifier with no controlled switches meet the harmonic guide lines, resulting in a simple, reliable and low-cost at-to dc converters in comparison with the boost-type current-improving circuits. This paper proposes a nonlinear impedance circuit composed by diodes and inductors or capacitors. This circuit needs no control circuits and switches, and the impedance value is changed by the polarity of current or voltage. And this paper presents one of these applications to improve the input current of capacitor input diode rectifiers. The rectifier using the nonlinear impedance circuit is constructed with four diodes and four capacitors in addition to the conventional rectifiers, that is, it has eight diodes and five capacitors, including a DC link capacitor. It makes harmonic components of the input current reduction and the power factor improvement. Half pulse-width modulated (HPWM) inverter was explained compared with conventional pulse width modulated(PWM) inverter. Proposed HPWM inverter eliminated dead-time by lowering switching loss and holding over-shooting.
Silver-alginate and copper-alginate were prepared with Na-alginate extracted from marine brown algae(Sargassum fluitans). The antibacterial effect of Ag-alginate or Cu-alginate against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was carried out by measuring optical density of liquid culture at 600 nm. The cell growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was very active at pH 7, and was inhibited by adding Ag-alginate with more than 0.006 wt.% of silver content. The antibacterial effect of Ag-alginate against S. aureus and E. coli was better than that of Cu-alginate at the same metal concentration. The cell growth of S. aureus was less inhibitory than E. coli at the same concentration of Ag-alginate. The cell growth of S. aureus and E. coli was also influenced by the characteristics of counter ion of silver.
The study has been carried out to investigate the mechanism of 'Kresek' induction caused by Xanthomonas oryzae (Uyeda & Ishiyama) Dowson. The results are summarized as follows: 1. K-isolate could always induce 'Kresek' symptom on susceptible varieties when the pathogenic bacteria were introduced either way through the leaves or roots, while N-isolate could not induce. 2. Milyang 23 which showed 'Kresek' symptom had significantly smaller diameter of vessel elements than those of other two varieties examined. 3. The bacterial number of It-isolates in the extract of Milyang 23 was higher than N-isolates but there was no difference in bacterial number between K-and N-isolates when they were grown in the extract of Tongil. 4. N and K-isolates reached to death phase after 3 days and 9 days, respectibly, when they were grown in the extract of Milyang 23. Both isolates, however, reached to death phase at the same time after 3 days of incubation in the extract of Tonsil. 5. Heavy precipitation was observed in the extract of Milyang 23 at PH 3.0-4.0 range, while only traceable precipitation could be observed in the extract of Tongil at the same pH range under room temperature.
