  • Recently, most of the underground excavation works are adopting heavy duty mobile diesel equipments which have outstanding merits in view of efficiency. However, these equipments are causing hygienic problems to the workers due to the various hazardous exhaust contaminants. Considering that there are always dead end workings in underground excavation sites, it is very important how to supply enough airflow to the workings to dilute diesel exhaust contaminants. This paper introduced the theoritical mechanism and actual trends of exhaust contaminants of diesel equipments under operation at local mines and suggested the design method of intake air volume in underground excavation workings using diesel equipments.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope the computer program to compute the unsteady, transient flow conditions in a hydraulic system. The unstready flow condition may be brought about due to power failure to pump motors, pump start-up or modulation of control valve. The program was written specially for analyzing the water-hammer in the pumping system. The pumping system which can be simulated by the program can contain pipelines, tunnel, surge tanks, branched lines, reservoirs, dead end pipes and valve controls. The use of a computer program to analyze haydranlic transients is of great benifit to the designers of transmission main and distribution systems. Advantages include time savings, the ability to analyze complex piping systems, and increased accuracy. The author outlines a pogram developed for the above system.

  • This paper is presented an experimental studies on bond stress between steel and concrete in concrete filled Rectangular steel tubes. In the actual building frames, vertical dead and live loads on beams are usually transferred to columns by beam-to-column connections. In case when concrete filled steel tubes are used as columns of an actual building frame which has a simple connection, shear forces in the beam ends are not directly transferred to the concrete core but directly to the steel tube. Provided that the bond effect between steel tube and concrete core should not be expected, none of the end shear in the beams would be transferred to the concrete core but only to the steel tube. Therefore, it is important to investigate the bond strength between steel tube and concrete core in the absence of shear connectors.

  • The ageing cause in many porcelain suspension insulators which occur on transmission and distribution line with dead-end stings is mechanical stress in interface between porcelain and cement materials. It is known that the principal mechanical stress which give electrical failure is the results of the displacement is due to cement growth. We studied the effect of cement displacement resulting environmental ageing parameters on porcelain insulator mechanical properties for transmission line by simulation (ANSYS/NASTRAN program) and test methods. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that cement volume growth affects severely to be mechanical failure ageing.

  • Thermal stratification enhancement for the higher extraction efficiency of hot water storage tank was experimentally studied with transparent fiber glass cylindical tank($350{\ell}$, D=516mm, H=1680mm). Height to diameter ratio (H/D =1,2,3), flow rate(Q= 8,10,12LPM), inlet-outlet temperature differences(${\Delta}T=20,25,30^{\circ}C$), and geometry of inlet-outlet port were the parameters. In particular, three kind of distributors were used for geometry of inlet-outlet port. As a result, it was possible to get extraction efficiency of 95% by using the distributor having variable diameter but keeping a constant diameter of perforation. So it is recommendable to design the distributor so that the main pipe decrease in diameter toward the dead end.

  • 1. Introduction : In microfiltration the transport, deposition and removal of particles control cake formation on a filter. In this connection a new model on cake formation, based on the wall shear stress, was tested here in comparison with experiments of fine particle slurry under Taylor-vortex flow. The model expresses the deposition process for particles as two first-order steps in series of mass transfer and adhesion, and their removal process as a linear relation to the wall shear stress. This embraces characteristics of both dead-end and crossflow filtration. The correlation resulting from fitting to experimental data represented the experimental data reasonably well. This study will be helpful in analyzing fouling in heat exchangers.

  • An inevitable problem feature of membrane processing is concentration polarization (CF) which is a result of the accumulation of retained solutes at the membrane surface. In ultrafiltration (UF), this accumulation can lead to fouling due to the irreversible deposition of macromolecules both at the membrane surface and in the membrane pores. To reduce or control CP and folding, many possible methods have been considered [1]. One of the most effective approaches is to induce fluid instability near the membrane surface by using pusation flow [2, 3], Taylor [4] and Dean [5, 6] vortex flows. Winzeler and Belfort [6] have comprehensively reviewed several possible attempts to use fluid instabihties for improved membrane performance.

  • In Kimchi (a salt-pickled and fermented food) manufacturing industry, the process of brining and rinsing the raw vegetable produces a vast amount of wastewater of high salinity. Instead of expensive and low-efficient conventional treatment system, brining wastewater reuse system was developed using hybrid chemical precipitation / microfiltration. In the microfiltration of chemically treated brining wastewater, comparison of flux, backwashing frequency and energy consumption was made between dead-end and crossflow filtration mode. The optimum location of neutralization step in this system was also discussed in connection with the micro filtration performance. The quality test of Kimchi prepared by the reuse system conformed the new approach was successful in terms of water/raw material (salt) savings and wastewater reduction.

  • A simple empirical model with good quantitative prediction of inter-particle and intra-particle distance in a cake layer with respect to ionic strength was developed. The model is an inverse length scale with functions of interaction energy and hydrodynamic factor and it explains that the inter-particle and intra-particle distance in a cake is directly related to the effective size of particles. Particle compressibility with respect to ionic strength was also predicted by the model. The model corroborated very well with experimental results of polystyrene microsphere latex particles microfiltation in a dead end operation. From the results of the model, specific cake resistance could be controlled by the same variables affecting the height of particle energy barrier described by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory.

  • In this paper, we propose the topological map building method about unknown environment using the ultrasonic sensors. An ultrasonic sensor inherently has the range error due to the specular reflection. To decrease this error, we estimate the obstacle states(position and velocity) using the local minimum sensor values and Jacobian. Estimated states are used to avoid the obstacles and build the topological map similar to the type that human being memorizes an environment. When a mobile robot is faced with three problems(comer way, cross way and dead end), it senses the movable directions using FIS(Fuzzy Inference System). Among these directions, it can select the target direction using binary decision tree(Turn Side Selector). Proposed algorithm has been verified with three simulations and three implementations.
